From family businesses to ambitious entrepreneurs to straight up scammers, here are some of the most interesting Shark Tank companies that scored deals on the show but failed later on.

To be fair the road side breathalyzers that police use are not accurate enough to be used in court. That's why they make you do it again on the big one at the police station. Those need to be recalibrated on a schedule or they aren't admissible.
They can be used in court. But defense attorneys usually discredit them pretty quickly.

To be fair, they can be used in court. But I'm going to get around this on a technicality. They can be used to establish sufficient cause for detention - but they aren't likely enough to satisfy the criminal charge.
That Breathometer device was a lawsuit waiting to happen. I'm surprised any of the sharks invested in that.

It's because she doesn't like low equity deals. She likes to get big chunks of companies. So when someone comes in to sell 3% of their company, she has no interest. It's smart because their shares get diluted pretty often. If you get 3%, it'll end up being more like 1% down the line.

Normally 20 minutes has to have pass at least before you use an alcohol breath test device as it will just measure mouth alcohol.. which will be higher of course.
I'm kinda shocked that anyone invested in that last product, it looks so cheap and awful looking.

@@hensonlaura Brad Sanders' suggestion is not that far-fetched. The vast majority of deals don't go anywhere, due to negotiations flopping. Also, the Sharks admit that signing a deal on TV is not good business. It leads to sob stories and good presenters, as well as frauds who you don't have time to background check, getting deals. Much of why these billionaires do it is to boost their personal brand, it's not to get rich.

You don't usually leave extension cables in the middle of the room. I don't see how you could trip over it if it's behind closet for example.

I remember when Back 9 Dip was on "Shark Tank". It looked really tasty, so I was happily surprised when I saw it in my local Publix grocery store the very next day! I bought it a few times over several months. It did taste good, but it was a bit inconvenient. The dip was very solid in the plastic container and needed to be put in the microwave to soften it up enough to actually use as a dip. However, once out of the microwave, it would congeal very quickly, so you'd have to make several trips to the microwave if you wanted to eat an entire bag of chips. Plopping down in front of the TV with a bag of Ruffles and some Back 9 Dip wasn't really an option unless your microwave was right there next to you! haha Good dip, just too much work for some junk food!

I'm surprised the Sharks invested in any of these, total garbage. The Invisiplug has to be one of the dumbest inventions i've ever seen, what good is a hidden surge protector if all the cords going into it are different colors. I should invent the Invisicord and take it to the Tank😂
Not to mention, what’s to stop every other company from just changing the color of their products? It’s not like they have any sort of patent. It can be copied the instant it hits the shelves.

The Sharks probably have a specific percentage of deals that they have to invest in. It would be a boring show if they only accepted 1% of the offers.
10:00 I started using a broccoli band from the grocery store to secure my "on hand" money. I keep about $400 in various bill sizes on hand for whenever I need cash, and as a teen I didn't really have access to my bank account so most of my money was just kept on hand, and it always was kind of overwhelming since it was a big springy wad of cash. When I saw this episode air I checked the broccoli in the refrigerator. My parents got broccoli with a rubber band and I wrapped my bills with it, and what was a giant mass became a neat and compact bunch. I still do this to this day.

1:49 even road side breathalyzers provided by police are rarely admissible in court. It’s what you blow later at the police station that counts. Depending how you body metabolizes alcohol, this reading can be higher or lower than roadside checks by police officers. Any OTC breathalyzer cannot say what your true BAC is. That’s why they all carry a warning label that lets you know the results aren’t completely accurate.

Rarely talked about but imagine how horrible the deal was for the shareholders of the company Cuban made billions off of. His company was a complete dud that they purchased for big time stock options.

Kevin brought up problems about breathometer when it was being presented on the tank but all the sharks getting interested overpowered his concerns. Probably could of been a good product if the founder actually worked on it could of got production prices down & make it something you use for a couple months & then need to buy a new one

Okay, there's no way the Breathometer would make roads safer. It would only give people an excuse to drink, so long as they stay under the legal limit. And if they're right near that threshold, oh well, close enough, they'll probably sober up enough by the time a cop pulls them over.

A wireless Breathometer already exists on interlock cars for DUI offenders. Dirtbag tip from a coworker, you can fool it with a long hose. You suck clean air into it a few times taking care to not breathe back into it.. then you use your breath to push the clean air in the hose into the detector

I watch Shark Tank, not only because it's entertaining, but because I ask myself, would I purchase what is sold?? 99.5% is NO!!👎 However, I would buy the belt buckle that turns into a wallet, where you can store your drivers license, cash, & credit cards, etc. That was a brilliant idea.

"Sweet Ballz" is just Starbucks cake pops which have been around for a loooong time.
Well before Starbucks; I made cake pops in the 80's. Hate it when massive companies appropriate common items as though they invented them. But then I'd buy a 1/2 lb of ground coffee & drink it over 2 weeks rather than buy one serving for the same money from a shop.
I mean, cake balls have been around since ancient Rome (pultes)
And cake balls were especially popular in the US during the Great Depression as a way to use up leftover cake scraps

I feel like Breathometer would have failed eventually even without the accuracy issues. The only people who care if they're drunk enough to drive choose not to drive after a few drinks just out of pure principle. Outside of that it would just be a neat party gadget for everyone to breath into and see who's the most drunk.

Why any investor would partner with a food company would not conduct a thorough analysis of product ingredients is beyond me. It's foolish.
The company had a new supplier of ingredients for the dip. They didn't know anchovies was added. I forget how they found out that led to recall.

breathometer should have been a usb device instead of an audio jack, which was getting phased out about the time this came out and blue tooth is too unreliable for such a piece of equipment.

Why did the dip get recalled just for containing anchovies? Are anchovies bad? I’m confused.
It seems some people are alergic to them and it could potentially cause serious problems if they buy the product, unaware of that and end up in a hospital.
The Back 9 story is sad, they were just honest people making a living. With that said, allergen contaminations like that can kill people pretty easily which is why it's such a big deal. It's like a product containing peanuts and not having it labeled - that can be deadly for a ton of people.
If you need to check your BAC before driving. Chances are you aren't good to drive. Take a damn cab/taxi instead. If you go out drinking and can't afford a cab/uber etc... that means you can't afford to go out. Stay home instead.
