This reminds me of a similar situation I fixed around 1988. My friend called me up, very upset. His rented VHS tape was stuck in the VHS tape player and it wouldn't eject. He needed to return the VHS tape to avoid late fees. I disassembled the VHS player, manually ejected the tape, then treated all of the belts with belt conditioner. Worked for a few years, then the VHS player died completely. So there you go. Thanks for the tutorial. Ignore the negative comments.
Extremely helpful video. Fixed my doctor's server and got a free appointment :D I didn't have the red liquid so I used isoprop alcohol and let it dry for 2-3 mins and it worked like a charm !
@vaggelismanousakis6147: Thank you, Nice Work, and congratulations on your reward! 👍 Cleaning the belt and pulleys with alcohol will allow the drive to work for a while, but it will begin slipping again in time. I can't predict how long the drive will work properly, but it should be good for a while. Any auto parts store will have belt dressing/belt conditioner, which will provide a longer lasting solution.

I open BOTH of my drives using this technique. I was about to buy an external USB drive and go back and forth between both computers instead of replacing 2 drives. But with a $5 can of belt conditioner I'm golden. Thank you
Thanks for the video, I didn't have any belt dressing so I used rubbing alcohol and that worked too (once it dried). we'll see how long it works but it sure beats buying a new drive
@user-mm8tn7ln8i: I am surprised that shoe polish worked, but it is good that you found an alternative solution. Congratulations! I am glad to hear my video helped you.
@Ella O: Some viewers have noted that some perfumes will work in place of belt dressing. If you have any that may dry to a sort of tacky texture, it may work.
im ending the school year so i had to give my teacher my books and a dvd (for the next class to use) and i was so upset that i couldn't find it, but i remembered that i used it on my old computer (doesn't work & i can't turn it on) and this helped me THANK YOU SO MUCH SAVED MY LIFE😁
Amazing! Your advice and technique worked perfectly! I don't have belt dressing, so I used plain Purell Hand Sanitizer gel, and now my DVD tray opens and closes every time very fast and smooth just like new! Thank you!
@Vira Thiyam: Thank you for the kudos. Some viewers have reported that some perfumes also work, but no names/types were specified. Additionally, you can try removing the belt and cleaning the belt and pulleys in warm soapy water. You can also try cleaning the belt and pulleys, in place, with alcohol on a swab. The cleaning options may provide good results for a good period of time, but without the stickiness of the belt dressing, the belt may slip again (duration unknown).
@@t5montecarlo Just opened up and vaccumed all the dust, applied some vaseline on all the cranks but soaked the rubber pulley and it's connecting portion of the cranks with regular window cleaner.. now it's opening smoothly.. thx.. btw..
@daru7529: Belt dressing is a spray you can buy at any auto parts store. It is sprayed on a belt and leaves a sticky residue. There is no alternative. You can try removing the belt and cleaning it in warm soapy water, and cleaning the pulleys with alcohol on a cotton swab. This option will work for a time, but the problem will return. Belt dressing is a much longer-term fix, if not a permanent fix.
Today I subscribed to your channel. I wish I would have found you sooner my friend. I tried many things to get my cd drawer to open. Thanks to you I can once again use my whole computer desktop. Thanks again !!!
Hello thank you so much for this vid but quick question can I use another form of liquid instead of the one you used like maybe something I can find at home?
@estabraqaltobi9184: You are most welcome. Belt dressing is the only product I am aware of that dries with a tacky surface. For an intermediate solution, that may last some time, but not forever, you can remove the belt and clean it in warm soapy water. Then, clean the pulleys with alcohol on a cotton swab. Give it a go.
Very good method sir , but my dvd/CD ROM is still not opening I tried paper pin method several times !! If I click the eject button the light does blimp but still can't open the drive😢😢
@37th Person Helper: It can be quite fiddly to open the drawer with a pin as you have to push quite hard. If you are still struggling, you may not be pushing hard enough, or the pin is not quite pushing on the right part of the lever inside the drive. If you take the drive out of the machine and remove the drive cover, you will be able to better see the opening lever. You will also be able to have easy access to the belt. Give it a go and let us know how you get on.
@@37thpersonhelper33 Believe it or not, this video is my most popular. I am still very pleased that it continues to help people overcome a common problem.
For the 1 who is searching for a solution to this problem you are in the right place. There is a very small hole under your dvd drawer so just put a needle inside this hole and push it the drawer will open partly and you can pull with your hands. Try it
@ snapdeus: That is a good tip that vinegar can be used as a cleaner to remove the dirt/oils from the belt, and you probably won't experience slippage, again, for a while.👍 If you were to apply belt dressing/conditioner to the cleaned belt, it will leave a tacky residue behind greatly reducing the likelihood of slippage in the future, especially after cleaning the belt.
I really wasn't expecting this to work, but it did. 1 swab of vinegar and it's opening and closing again after not having been used for several years. Really comes in handy as where I'm from a can (no idea if you can buy less than that) of belt dressing costs about as much as the whole cd/dvd drive would.
@@t5montecarlo Very cool! I work in IT so this will be very helpful in the future too. And I hope so too! I desperately needed my drive to work because I’m digitizing copies of my movies and some have DRM protections. So dumb, but the oldies don’t care about pesky copyright! Now we’re back in action. Thanks again.
This was very helpful. I brought a can of CRC Belt Conditioner, sprayed it on and it didn't help, so now I will try it your way with the cotton swabs and moving the tray.
@TheShabazzProduction: You are very welcome. The key is to apply the belt conditioner to the inside of the belt. Using a cotton swab and moving the drawer will enable you to apply the belt conditioner to the entire inside surface of the belt. I hope you are successful. Please let us know how it goes.
@Spencer56: You will need to improvise with a narrow nail or something similar. Your next option is to remove the drive and remove the cover to gain access to the belt.
Thank you! I have 3 DVD drives in my tower and all 3 of them had this same problem. I thought it might have been an issue with my power supply, but swapping that out didn't change anything. I came across your video, tried the belt-dressing method...and voila! Good as new :)
@Evan White: I am glad I was able to help you fix your drives and that you were able to experience that 'et voila' moment. Success/accomplishment is a good feeling.
@Clone Stormtrooper: Oh, but it does, but it is fiddly. you have to press quite hard to operate the lever inside the drive. Keep trying and you will get it open. If the drive still won't open, perhaps you have an obstruction inside, such as a broken gear. In that case, you will need to remove the drive from the machine and remove the cover from the drive to find out what is causing the obstruction.
@@t5montecarlo Thanks, i've tried, it got really hard to push but it opened a little bit to open. The problem is that as long you move the tray it moves almost normally, but when it stops it gets hard to make it start moving again as if jammed or something obstructing the tray. I have no idea if the belt causes the tray to be hard to move or if it's something else. It needs to be pulled or pushed a bit harder to move it.
@@arbiteras I think you may need to remove the drive and remove its cover to see what is preventing the drawer from opening. Let us know how you get on.
@tylerdurden783: I'm sorry you are the first in thousands that were unsuccessful. If the drive is partially opened, will it continue to open on its own? Will it close on its own? If it does, then I can only think the belt and pulleys are quite dirty and I recommend removing the drive and opening it. Then, remove the belt and give it a good cleaning with warm soapy water. Clean the pulley grooves with alcohol. Install the cleaned/dried belt and treat the inside edge with belt dressing. Also, clean the rails that the drawer rides on of dust/dirt and relubricate them, lightly. If the drive drawer still won't open, there must be something else wrong with it.
@@t5montecarlo It closes on its own, and opens if there is a DVD in the drive when you press the button. It simply doesn't open when you press the button when it is empty. It is bizarre. I first cleaned the pulleys and belt with iso before finding your video, and they were not very dirty, and then I tried using a hairdryer on high heat on it for a bit to try and shrink the belt, and that worked at first, but the issue came back the next day.
@@tylerdurden783 I agree that is very bizarre behavior. I don't understand why the absence of a disc would make a difference. I can only recommend watching the drawer operate with the drive removed and the drive cover removed, so you can see what is happening or isn't happening.
@@t5montecarlo yeah, that’s probably best at this point. I was hoping for a quick fix but it clearly needs to be taken apart some more. Thanks for your help and I gave the video a thumbs up as even if it didn’t work for me it’s still a good idea imho
@ Adam Torvill: It is strange that your drawer will only open when a disc is inside. I am not doubting your experience. The mechanism is not dependent on the contents of the drawer. I recommend giving the belt and pulleys a good cleaning with alcohol and see how it performs. If the drawer seems to work properly, with or without a disc, you have won. If you want a lifetime of success, apply belt dressing to the inside of the belt. Let us know how you get on.
I mean I wouldn't mind fixing it with some belt dressing but I don't wanna spend £7 for some when I have another dvd drive on my computer, I have 2 drives. I can open it if I jam my finger nail side of the tray then press eject
@@adam_torvill Try giving the belt a good cleaning. If you can take it out of the drive, start with warm soapy water. Then clean the pulleys. A cleaning will last for a while.
@@adam_torvill Belt dressing is readily available in auto parts stores in The States, but not sure about the UK. Shipping is very expensive, so I agree to look in the shops first.
@batphink2655: You are very welcome. I hope it helps you to fix your drive. I don't have that DVD drive anymore, so I don't know what make it was. If your drive doesn't have a hole, you can make your own. If you remove the drive and then remove the drive cover, you will be able to see the lever that needs to be pushed to open the drawer. That will give you the clue as to where to make the hole. In my LiteOn DVR, the drawer had no hole, so I had to make one. That was long before I figured out the belt dressing solution. I wish you success in fixing your drive.
I have one that someone bumped into while it was opening. I am just glad that optical media is dead for the most part. I usually don't use CDs or DVDs any more. I was just wanting to look through a stack of old CDs I burned. I even removed the DVD drive from my laptop and got an adaptor for a 2.5 inch hard drive. It works flawlessly and adds a second hard drive or solid state drive. I am just not sure if I get the full speed of the hard drive I used in there but it is not slow. It is a SATA drive, just not the full size connector that those laptop CD/DVD drives have but the adaptor makes it work and holds the drive securely too. I got one of the plastic ones, they come in metal and multiple thicknesses.
@Charles Hines: If your drive or cable adapter only support SATA II, not SATA III, it will only have a speed of 3 Gb/s. With SATA III, it will have a speed of 6 Gb/s. Have you tried running any benchmark tools to see how the configuration performs?
If anyone doesn't have belt conditioner I substituted shoe polish and it worked. Opening with the pin: -have the pin ready in the hole -press the open button -allow it to fail to open -after it fails, then press the pin THANK YOU FOR SHOWING ME HOW TO FIX THESE OP.
My problem is different. When I turn on the computer the DVD Drive Drawer opens by itself and makes some annoying sounds. One day it even closed. I didn't notice but it was open for an entire day and I can't close it.
@Siva Suntharam: If the drive drawer is opening by itself, some code is being executed to open it. Please check your computer for malware. Normally, if you push on the open drawer, it will continue to close by itself, but yours isn't. Have you tried closing the drawer when the computer is turned off? If the annoying sounds reminded you of grinding plastic gears, you may have to remove the drive and disassemble it to find out what is wrong and fix it...or replace it.
@Peter Whyte: When there is no little hole, you will need to remove the drive, remove the drive cover, and then manually operate the linkage to open the drawer. Once the drawer is opened, you can examine where the little hole needs to be and drill a hole. While the drive is disassembled, you can apply belt dressing/conditioner to the belt. Please let us know how you get on.
@SejL Shah: I am sorry, but I have no experience with a laptop CD/DVD drive. I only know they are easy to remove from the laptop. I suggest removing the drive and then studying it to see how to take it apart. Once apart, you may be able to determine why it isn't opening. Let us know how you get on.
@@t5montecarlo Thank you Sir ! After watching some videos I was able to take the CD drive apart from the laptop and found a tiny hole on it. So by following the same steps, from your video, I was able to open the tray. However, I didn't see any belt inside it...may be its broken... Now after watching this video at least I can open the tray manually using a pin, and without turning off the laptop. Thank you !!!
@@sejjalshah I also watched a video where a laptop CD drive was disassembled. It appears there is a solenoid that releases a latch. A small spring will push the drawer out a small amount, after the latch has been released by the solenoid, allowing you to pull the drive drawer all the way out.
@@t5montecarlo Thank you for the info. In my cd drive, upon pressing the button to open the tray, only the LED keeps blinking for some time, a little sound is heard, kind of an attempt for push the tray out and then nothing happens. May be a time to buy a new one, as often, the CDs / DVDs aren't getting detected, after inserting them.
@@sejjalshah If you are hearing a clicking sound, then I suspect the solenoid is working. Perhaps the spring is broken or the tracks are dirty. If discs are not being detected, it may be time to retire the drive unless you have success after trying to clean the laser lens.
@jacnoname3370: I don't think you understand. I will repeat my response to your other comment. Since you don't have an emergency hole in the front of the drawer, you need to remove the drive from the computer and remove the cover from the drive. Then you will have access to the drive belt. You will be able to operate the pulleys to begin opening the drawer. Once the drawer is opened, you can remove the front of the drawer and make a hole where it needs to be. You also have easy access to treat the belt so you won't have the problem anymore.
@cmunoz810: Yes, a computer repair shop will be able to fix your drive. Since you already have the drive open, perhaps you can just buy the belt from the shop and put it in yourself. If it is a nice shop, perhaps they will put it in for you and not charge you extra.
Thanks.. but my problem is it sounds like it's stuck, light comes on, drive won't eject, and when I open it manually the way you did here, it grinds the gears using brute force in order to close or open it all the way.. all this happened after cd exploded inside drive at warp speed!! I took it all apart and cleaned every little piece of the cd out of it I could see, hear, or find with air gun. still no working? any suggestions please...?
@Todd Gilmore: I have never heard of a disc exploding inside a drive, that must have been quite a shock. I suspect there are still some very small bits lodged between gears, along a guide rail, or in the electric motor. The gears may also have been damaged. It is hard to diagnose long distance; eyes are the best tool. I suggest to take it to bits again and remove parts for a close examination. Be careful not to disturb the lens. Let us know what you find.
Worked for me. But I could only find belt conditioner instead of belt dressing. I made a cd after I opened it but it got stuck. Applied the lube and turned it off and on and it seems to be opening again like normal. Kinda messed up and sprayed lube on belt to lube the inside of the belt.
@joebloby is me: I am glad to hear that you were able to fix your drive. It is OK if you sprayed the outside of the belt. Note that belt dressing/belt conditioner is not a lubricant. It may feel wet/slick immediately after it is applied, but it dries to a tacky texture.
@@t5montecarlo Thanks. I used your video to fix a cd duplicator for my church. Verified it by opening the drive and making 2 new cd's. I wish they went digital but that's a story for another day :)
Hey man I am cooked so mine cd rom is not opening when I check the belt it was broken so I replaced it but after that 2-3 times I tested it by opening and closing it and after that it was stuck badly I managed to get it open with help of a screwdriver but when I try to close it after inspecting it isn't going in and when I force it the belt comes off 2. Something white sort of plastic which uplifts the magnet mechanism is stuck halfway and I can't remove the cd rom from my computer as it soldered in so any help bro
@Peelglasses: I think when you forced the drive open with a screwdriver, rather than depressing the lever behind the hole in the front of the drawer, you broke the internal mechanisms. I feel you will need to replace the drive. ☹ You will need to remove the drive and remove the drive cover in order to remove the disc. I have never seen a CD or DVD drive that is soldered in place. On a desktop computer, the drive is screwed to the frame and connected to the motherboard by cable. On a laptop, there is a screw to remove, or a button to depress, and then the drive can be removed.
@@Peelglasses I would be shocked if a screw is soldered in; that would be a new one for me. Are you able to see the rear of the screw to confirm? If so, can you unsolder it?
@t5montecarlo i don't think so So I managed to insta belt again and now the cover is opening and closing the mechanism isn't doing anything and when I remove the tray try to uplift the mechanism with a screwdriver it works wtf is going on bruh

When I press the button the green light turns on for about 5 seconds then turns off. I can hear a noise and then then sometimes a red light goes off in the middle, ( I took apart everything so I can see the internal components ) do you know what’s wrong?
@XxBlazingBanana: If you have the drive opened when it is operating, you should be able to see the gears and belt. When pressing the button on the drive, the gears should turn to open the door and likely the belt is slipping. The red light is likely the laser, which is red.
t5montecarlo There’s doesn’t seem to be any gears turning even when I press the button. I wiped the band down and the gears and it still seems to not of changed anything. Do you have another platform I can contact you on so I could send you a video or something, thanks.
@@XxBlazingBanana You are seeing the green light turn on, so the button works. Do you hear any mechanical sounds when pressing the button? If you feel a video would help, post it to youtube and reply with a link. I can't promise anything.

I still have to buy belt dressing, but I’m definitely going to use this technique. Went to a repair shop and they said they could try fixing it for $300 so I “might as well” buy one of their refurbished laptops which is much older. I’m excited to try this!
@riya garg: In place of a paperclip, look for anything thin and rigid that will fit into the hole in the front of the drive. Some people have reported that just cleaning the belt with alcohol will allow the drawer to open.
@scaryninjagamerboy: If the button doesn't work and the light is not illuminating when you push the button, there are 2 potential causes: 1.) There is no power to the drive or 2.) The electrical contact behind the button is bad. If the drive makes noise when the computer boots up, the power cable is connected to the drive, which likely means the electrical contact behind the button is bad. If the drive doesn't make any noise when the computer boots up, open the computer and confirm the power and drive cables are connected properly. Try swapping the power supply cable with another device that works and see if the drive works. If the drive still doesn't work, there is something internally wrong with the drive and it may be time to replace it.
I have a short pin and it didn't work (I guess it needs about an inch). However I noticed that the problem what that the button of the deskotp case outside the DVD drive didn't push the actual button of the DVD drive so I just pushed the DVD drive with a pen; I couldn't push it with my finger due to the mechanism of the outside button was covering most of the DVD button. Any suggestion? I mean I do have a pen on my office and I can open it anytime but it looks weird when there are people around.
@jackdonith: I'm not sure I follow, so let me know if I understand. When you push the button on the front of the drive (like the thumbnail of this video), it is not depressing the switch behind the button. If you use press the button with a pen, you able to press it button far enough to depress the switch behind the button? If I understand correctly, I suggest removing the drive, removing the drive cover, opening the drawer to the face can be removed, removing the drive face (part that contains the button), and then add something to the back of the button so that it will reach the switch with less pressure on the button. If I don't understand correctly, I am sorry. Perhaps you can describe a bit differently or reference a picture. I realize things like this are always easier to describe in person.
@ Име Презиме: It sounds like the switch behind the button, that opens and closes the drawer, may be bad (stuck in closed position). You will need to remove the drive and then remove the drive cover to investigate. Let us know how you get on.
@maxamer7616: There is no substitute for belt dressing/belt conditioner. You will be able to buy some time with a good clean of the belt and pulleys with warm soapy water or alcohol. Belt dressing/belt conditioner is available at any auto parts store or at one of the links I provided in the description.
@DavidM21: You are most welcome. I am not sure the wet Q-tip solution will last for very long, but you likely have cleaned off some of the dirt/oils that were on the belt, allowing the belt to work better. I hope your solution works for some time.👍
@mandiramukherjee7173: The paperclip must be inserted perpendicular to the front of the drive, and you have to push quite hard in order to move the lever that will open the drawer. The lever is not very wide; if the paperclip is not inserted perpendicular to the front of the drive, you may miss the lever and be pressing on the drive frame. After the drawer has opened a bit from pressing on the lever, it can be pulled the rest of the way open. Let us know how you get on.
Paper clip to open draw is a great tip, worked for me anyway, I, then dipped a cotton bud in some olive oil (another video on here suggested using olive oil) Draw still stuck. I'll try again later. Also noticed, I lost the small green flashing light on cover of draw, for some reason. Wil not give up yet, got a great boxset to watch.
@Keepingitrespectfulmostly.: Belt dressing leaves a tacky surface when it dries so that the belt will grip the pulleys. Whoever suggested applying olive oil is giving you false information. Applying any type of lubricant will enhance the problem of the belt slipping. I recommend you remove the belt and give it a good clean in warm soapy water. Then, thoroughly clean the pulley grooves with alcohol on a cotton but to remove all traces of olive oil. Once this cleaning has been done, the drive may work for a time, but the belt will begin to slip again. Applying belt dressing after the cleaning will ensure the belt never slips again. If the drive still works and the green light is not, the LED may have failed. If the drive is no longer working, you may have lost power to the drive. Check the power and data cables attached to the drive.
@Lalsangzuala Chenkual: Treadmill Spray is a lubricant, so it should not be applied to the belt. There should be no lubricant on the belt; the belt is meant to grip the pulley, not slip on the pulley. When the drawer doesn't open, it is because the belt is slipping on the pulley. If lubricant has been applied to the belt, the belt will need to be removed and thoroughly cleaned in hot soapy water. The pulleys will also need to be carefully cleaned in situ.

What is belt dressing? Is there any alternative i can use

You can use vinegar as a substitute in a pinch! Worked for me thanks

Paperclip doesn't work.

It’s a cool idea, but sadly it did not work for my drive. Now I have belt dressing I don’t need for anything else 😂
I can only recommend watching the drawer operate with the drive removed and the drive cover removed, so you can see what is happening or isn't happening.

well my dvd drive opens when it has a disc inside it but when its empty it doesn't open. my old xbox 360 phat used to do the same
@ Adam Torvill: It is strange that your drawer will only open when a disc is inside.

@Outrider4X: You are very welcome. I am glad you found another alternative solution that worked for you.
Any advice if no little hole? Makes a grinding noise if it tries to open.

I had a can of 3M photo mount spray (tacky) handy and followed your method and it worked like a charm! Thank you.
@Steve Britten: What a brilliant solution. I hope your drive drawer opens properly for many years to come.
If you drive won't open what good does it do to put the substance on the belt drive?
@jacnoname3370: I don't think you understand. I will repeat my response to your other comment.
Since you don't have an emergency hole in the front of the drawer, you need to remove the drive from the computer and remove the cover from the drive. Then you will have access to the drive belt. You will be able to operate the pulleys to begin opening the drawer. Once the drawer is opened, you can remove the front of the drawer and make a hole where it needs to be. You also have easy access to treat the belt so you won't have the problem anymore.
So I opened the drive but noticed the belt is gone! Not sure if it fell off Would I be able to get this fix if taken to a computer repair place?

@XxBlazingBanana: If you have the drive opened when it is operating, you should be able to see the gears and belt. When pressing the button on the drive, the gears should turn to open the door and likely the belt is slipping.

Hey, my light doesnt even turn green when I press the button. What do I do?

@DavidM21: You are most welcome. I am not sure the wet Q-tip solution will last for very long, but you likely have cleaned off some of the dirt/oils that were on the belt, allowing the belt to work better. I hope your solution works for some time.👍
Thanks. I've got a half dozen drives that need fixing, plus the cassette and CD players on my stereo.
@Prelude610: You've a good point about the same solution applying to belt-driven cassette decks; nice one. I am glad I was able to help you.
thank man, you're the MAN
@elsaesteves: You are most welcome, Elsa. I am glad I was able to help you.
Instead of using pin. I inserted medium size Screwdriver & Pulled Once. After switching on cpu. It automatically opened & Now works perfectly.
@Veeresh Meti: 👍
I can't open the drive with a paperclip. How do I do that?
@@t5montecarlo Cheers for reply and advice. I'll not give up with it yet. 🎅🎅👍👍
@@Keepingitrespectfulmostly. That's the spirit!!
What if I have a CD or pieces of a CD in the drive should I do the same thing you did in the video
@Joshua Salyers: If you are referring to how I opened the drive with a paper clip, then yes.
Can i use Treadmill spray on it?
@Lalsangzuala Chenkual: Treadmill Spray is a lubricant, so it should not be applied to the belt. There should be no lubricant on the belt; the belt is meant to grip the pulley, not slip on the pulley. When the drawer doesn't open, it is because the belt is slipping on the pulley. If lubricant has been applied to the belt, the belt will need to be removed and thoroughly cleaned in hot soapy water. The pulleys will also need to be carefully cleaned in situ.
