    Eric, I just want to thank you for helping me to fix my CD player. It was my first CD player, and it was a problem with the tray not opening. Now it opens after I changed a belt. You gave me the courage to open it up and work on it.

    I just fixed this problem on a TEAC PD-425 and a Sony RCD-W500C. For both decks it was the rubber belts. The belt on the TEAC still had plenty of tension, just not enough to get the job done. That was the hard part, it "seemed" ok. I replaced it with some belts I purchased on Amazon for less than $2. When I pulled the cover off the Sony, it was quite evident that the belts were shot. Thanks to a video here on TH-cam I also learned that there was a fourth belt I needed to replace and how to do it, as well as a tip on aligning the dots on all the pulleys. The tray on the recorder side still works so I didn't replace that belt. Tbh, the burner on my computer does a much better and quicker job so I really don't need the recorder on the Sony.

    Video was perfect! I have the same CD player and it was doing the same thing... for years! I lubed it up but instead of using a peace of paper at the spring. I just stretched the spring and replaced. It had to much pressure on the wheel. Works good now.

    YES! After a decade dust-collecting, i managed to fix my good old fashioned Sony CDP-550 CD-player. your video gave me the trust to open it.
    I think mine started working after loosening the screw of the black drum and applying some lubricant (WD-40) in my case on the top of the drum on the screw. Thanks! Listening to good old Dire Straits right now..... :)
    ps safety tip: i put a sticker on the lens because of the laser. don't forget to take it off, once fixed. good luck !

  • @MisterEricB
    @MisterEricB  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There are lots of things to consider when deciding which CD players are better. Strictly considering drawer issues like these, I would think that since the pop-up lid type has fewer moving parts, there are less things to break so it will probably last longer. The disadvantage of the pop-up lid, of course, is that you can't put anything on top of it. So those wouldn't work for a rack mounted system or a console stereo system with different pieces stacked on top of each other.

    Many thanks. I was able to finally fix my 25 year old high end (at the time) Sony CD player after trying and failing 5 years ago to fix it (before TH-cam). It had the exact same issue with the small nob on the L shaped arm stopping the gear from lifting the laser mechanism. I just unattached the spring. Not sure why it was included in the design to begin with.

      Just did the same, I took the whole thing off, now opens and shuts. The service book was no help, it's just called a lever, and is not electrically connected so its not a switch. My guess it's there to regulate the speed the draw opens, make it look smooth.

    Eric, I have a Kenwood DP-2030. All the electronics light up and appear to function, the CD drawer opens & closes perfectly fine, but then the readout says 'no disc' even though there is a disk in it.....any suggestions? TIA

    • @MisterEricB
      @MisterEricB  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hmmm, if it isn't reading any discs at all, then there must be something wrong with the laser or lens. Hopefully it could be as simple as cleaning the lens. You can try some standard lens cleaning solutions for that. I'm afraid I don't have any other suggestions if that doesn't work. Good luck!

    Hello, I have two broken CD-I players, one being sent as a replacement to the other (of Ebay), both broken. One has the door ejects and close fine, but once the cd is inside I hear many crackling noises and a error message. The other has the door jammed (feeble motor sound, remains closed). Which one sounds like the most easy to repair?

    • @MisterEricB
      @MisterEricB  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Geoff Gray Hi Geoff, since the CD does spin and the player attempts to read it, it doesn't sound like any kind of drawer issue. Sounds like there is a problem with the lens or CD, but you've probably tried multiple CD's, so probably the lens. Hopefully it just needs some cleaning. You could try a cleaning CD that has a tiny brush on it, or some other cleaning solution. I see there are a few videos on lens cleaning here, so you might try one of those. Good luck!

    • @MisterEricB
      @MisterEricB  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Usually a CD player starts spinning the CD when it detects that the drawer is closed. I see from a video that the Technics SLP1200 doesn't have a drawer that extends out, but just has a lid that opens and you set the CD in there. It's still possible that there is something wrong with the lid latch so the CD player still thinks the lid is open. If that's not it though, then it could be the spin motor, especially since its a very old unit. Sorry, I wouldn't know what to do in that case.

  • @MisterEricB
    @MisterEricB  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    sounds like either maybe the gears slipped so that the tray is not geared correctly, or else maybe there's something blocking the tray when its shutting. Either way, I think you should open it up and try to watch what its doing when it tries to close. If there isn't anything physically blocking it, then you should probably 1) take the tray out, 2) press open to make sure that the gear is where it should be for the open position, 3) put the tray back in in the open position, 4) try closing

    • @MisterEricB

      Did you have to take the drawer apart? If you had to take the drawer apart, then you want to be sure to re-assemble it in the closed position when the CD player thinks its closed, or in the open position when CD player thinks its open. Otherwise the drawer could stop working. But it seems like that would cause a little noise. So if there is no noise at all, then it may be an electronics issue, and I wouldn't know how to go about fixing that, sorry.

      Sorry for the very late reply, Jim. Unfortunately, I've never worked on a multiple CD tray model. But I've found that I learn a lot by just running things with case off. Not exactly sure how they players determine if there is a disc or not. Maybe the whole laser mechanism is failing to raise/lower and the player is reporting that as "no disc"? Or maybe a dirty laser eye isn't reading it properly? Let us know if you fix it, good luck!

    my cd player drawer opens and then closes all in one motion, it won't just stay open. So if I want to put a disc in I have to throw it in the tray while it's moving or it will just close up immediately. Any thoughts on this situation? thanks!

    • @MisterEricB
      @MisterEricB  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm... well, one thought is that maybe the Open/Close button is getting stuck, so the Close is getting activated right when the Open finishes. But then it seems like it would just keep opening and closing over and over. Another idea is that maybe the drawer is encountering some resistance before it is fully open, and that is causing it to close, similar to how an open drawer closes when you push on it. Maybe that could be caused by the drawer having slipped on the gears. That's an interesting one, please post back here if you figure it out!

      Jason B Sounds to me like some part is getting stuck to another part when it's trying to close and when you hit it, it unsticks them from each other. So I would try the grease approach. Open it up and any notice any parts that are moving against each other when the Open/Close is happening. Make sure they have a bit of grease on them so that they move smoothly. And you may even be able to see exactly where its sticking. If so, try greasing that area up. Good luck!

    can i use a T20 tool ? #girlproblems

      You mean the T20 star pattern screwdriver? It just depends on your CD player if you'll need that. The player in this video was all standard phillips screws, no T20 or other special screwdrivers were needed. On others, you might find some T20 screws, but I doubt they will be common

    A tad dark but helpful. A desk lamp will do the trick.

    My 3 disc Bose Wave Multi CD Changer reads " DISC ERROR " and the ejects the CD. I bought this system in Dec of 2010. Any suggestions?

      You should try cleaning the lens of the laser.
