I love my Versafine pad. I bought it in 2005 and i have never reinked it, which is amazing because I make tons of cards. Hands down the best ink if not using copics :)
I have Versafine black onyx which I bought a couple of months ago. I think they may have changed the formula slightly as it does not dry instantly and I can add clear embossing powder to heat set for water colouring. It has a different design on the front now.
Amy I can't tell you how many times I've been in Michael's staring at the collection of ink pads, trying to pick what I might need and then just feeling totally overwhelmed by it all. LOL! For anyone just starting out with stamping and papercrafting, the amount of supplies available out there can be confusing. I am going to have a look through the ones I have and label them according to the information you just gave us. Thanks for the tips!
This was a perfect video for me. I was just testing out some black stamping with markers. I had not tried the stamps with water yet. I plan on downloading your chart. Again, VERY helpful.
Amy, this is by far the BEST video/explanation/comparison I have seen about black ink pads. Thank you so much. My husband is a chemist who deals with both solvent and water soluable resins and compounds ALL the time. When I asked him about what it means on the Versafine Black Onyx as being "oil based," he said it simply means "solvent" such as acetone, alcohol, odorless mineral spirits, etc. He believes the Versafine contains ordorless mineral spirits. Just FYI. Different companies, especially foreign ones who manufacture inks and other products use a nomenclature that is sometimes different than what we Americans use. It's ok, it's just different. I really, really like my new pad of Versafine Black Onyx. Great stuff!
Thanks for educating me on the different types of inks. Your video is very helpful to folks like me who are kind of new to using stamps and stamping phrases etc. Have a Blessed day!
TFS!!!!! I was using "ditto" it smeared badly when i used copic marker and this was done 2 days later.... going to use memento/versafine from now on thank you so much......
Thanks for sharing. I purchased my versafine black ink pad today. I'm excited to use it. I already have the black memento. I like that ink pad as well. The brilliance I may try but no rush since I have the other two.😊
Thanks for info! When I started to stamp I used Brilliance (I watercolor my images). Then I heard about Versafine. When my Briliiance dried up I changed over Versafine and I've used it ever since. I {heart} my Versafine.
Great info. I can never remember from stamping to stamping which is the best but now it all sense. Thank-you once again for your informative tutorials.
I'll have to rewatch when I can take notes. Saving this or now. Stamps aren't my thing but after watching this I can see why, they were always harder than It seemed.
This was so helpful! I'm a huge fan of Memento but I think I will try the Brilliance too. It would be nice to have on hand when I'm inking bolder images or stamping on patterns.
Very informative video Amy. Thanks for the indepth explanation of the differences. I have always been so confused by them and never was sure which ones, or why, some turned out so much better than others. This video really helped!!!
Fabulous video, Amy!!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge on black inks with us. I find your instruction very useful and your reasons for preferring certain products very well founded. Again, thank you.
if the ink wasn't completely dry that could be the cause - but more than likely it's the paper - if it's too thin or if you are coloring too heavily the copic color will bleed out and press the stamped ink out a bit making it look like it's smearing.
there is also matte clear embossingpowder... just so you know. I started stamping with stazon and versafine, no markers back then. Still love my versafine like day 1, use that one the most, and never refilled it yet, still really juicy :)) tfs. xoxo karin (karinscreations is my youtube)
I love the tutorial about the inks. It's good to know about which are better for different types of paper and stamps. Questions what the name of the stamp that you are using in the tutorial? I'm creating invitation for a baby shower and I want to know. Thank You....
Great info, have you tried the India Ink. It dries super fast annd doen't bleed when using markers. the one ink makes the markers bleed because, as I learned in a class, oil and water don't mix.
Wonderful review!! Personally, I also LOVE, LOVE, LOVE both Memento and Versafine, as well as Adirondack Pitch Black (and ALL colours!) I don't understand why you don't just pitch the Brilliance! I think that the Versafine looked SO much better...Brilliance sounds like a real pain to me!! TFS!
Very informative and appreciated video. Your thoughts on Stazon black ink vs the ones you chose please? Also, I have a hard time with white ink so I am looking for your best recommendation on that? White ink on black cardstock. Thank you.
I just have to say, you are my go to for all my copic and coloring needs. I have a question, in your video you had shown how the versafine ink would distort and kind of make the lines bleed when coloring with copics. My question is, I have stamped with the momento ink, and at times my coloring bleeds just like it did in your video for the versafine. I was told it was the ink, then I was told it was the paper. What do you think? is it my paper?
Thanks for this video...very helpful. You touched on the Pigment Ink beading on clear stamps - is there anything that can be done to prevent or minimize beading?? Also - you never seem to use a soft pad when you stamp. I know some stamping companies (CTMH) say to always use something under your paper when stamping. What's your opinion on this? Thanks!!
thanks for this great tutorial, you explain it so well. Is it possible to refill memento markers at home? I've tried just dipping the nib, but it doesn't last very long.
Hello! Great video! :) I just wondered, can you watercolor images that has stamped outlines with Memento? How about coloring images with Distress Ink, that has outlines done with Memento? I don't color with copic markers, only watercolor and Distress Inks. :)
Thanks Amy for the wonderful video! Ive been watching ur vids for a long time and decided to get myself a dew drop brilliance black ink to try. Tried that day but end up staining my lawn fawn sentiment stamp very badly. :( you don't seem to have the problem. Why?
pigment ink doesn't bead on clear stamps - dye/water based inks can bead/pool. As far as placing a pad under the paper when stamping it's up to personal preference. I've been stamping for years and have never bothered. If a person is having a hard time getting a good/even impression placing a pad under their paper will probably solve their problem.
Hey Amy! Thanks for taking the time to do another great educational video. I learn so much from watching your videos. :) Unfortunately I recently invested in some new ranger archival ink pads. Have you used these before? If so do you think they could be used successfully in the place of one of the other inks you mentioned?
Would you mind telling me what BRAND of table pad you are working on? I love the COLOR and the lines. Hope to hear back. Thank you for this video--best explanation!
again, awesome information, you rock with these review vids, thanks so much for sharing! Just wondering, do you store any of these upside down, or do you find right side up works just fine?
I just bought brilliance pigment pad and I think its all dried out. It comes out Grey and a little bit gritty 🤔 thats for the rewiew. I think om going back with it to the store. From your rewiew it just dosen't look the same at all.
Hi there. That was interesting. See your brilliance ink. How you said to leave it to dry. Or heat tool it. Or it will smudge. Can you then use your markers to colour it in. Do you know please. As I have a problem with smudging. America always seem to have a lot better products than Britain. And your fancy shaped stamp blocks look fab. Do you know the brand. that make them please. Thank you so much.
It's a pigment ink like I said so it needs either time or heat for it to dry fully. Once it's dry yes you can use all sorts of colouring methods with it. The acrylic blocks are from ccdesignsrubberstamps.com :)
do you think the VersaFine would be ok to use on pla filament prints from a 3d printer to stamp the top of raised letters to make them stand out without bleeding all over?
I have no idea sorry I work with paper so I can't tell you - you'd have to contact the ink manufacturer (or look up the specifics of the ink online) to find that out!
Great video, I have a question, does Versafine onyx black Ink stain your clear and rubber stamps. I just bought the Ranger Archival jet black ink and it stained my stamps. I am looking for a black ink to use with my Tim Holtz distress markers that wont stain my stamps. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you soo much:)
monica Stickles most inks will stain stamps, especially clear stamps. It doesn't affect the stamps at all they still work just fine. FYI though Ultra Clean stamp cleaner will remove *most* residual ink, but won't remove actual staining (nothing will).
lol.....I am SO confused! A beginner here...I am stamping on glass, but also sealing with ModPodge DM...And also using alcohol inks too. Any smple advice?
+Wanda van Bogerijen I don't know what "a so fort" means (or it might be a typo) but the "mom" stamp is no longer available sorry. It was one of my AmyR Stamps sentiments and the line was discontinued.
+Prairie Paper & Ink (AmyR) I ment the name, the brand and everything else about it so I could find it, but it isn't made anymore, that's a pitty. Thank you for anserng my question.
Thank you for such a comprehensive guide! From what you have said, Momento and VersaFine dry too fast for embossing, and Brilliance could be great for embossing. I own several Brilliance colours. But I notice that my embossed images using the Brilliance ink result in splotchy and beady images...and I have no idea why. Does it happen to you if you emboss with your Brilliance ink? What other coloured pigment inks would you recommend for heat embossing?
Keep coming back to this video for refresher .

Thank you! I am new to art journaling and stamping so this was very helpful!
Glad to finally learn what kind of black ink pad I can use with water coloring!
TFS!!!!! I was using "ditto" it smeared badly when i used copic marker and this was done 2 days later.... going to use memento/versafine from now on thank you so much......
Please do an updated version of this! Thx🤗
Thanks for sharing. I purchased my versafine black ink pad today. I'm excited to use it. I already have the black memento. I like that ink pad as well. The brilliance I may try but no rush since I have the other two.😊
ABSOLUTELY the finest explanation of the different inks I've ever seen(heard). GREAT job!! Julie
This was very helpful. For a newbie, where to start and not waste money is a biggie! Thanks so much!
Thanks for info!

This is fabulous! You have presented a lot of info and kept it straight forward.
I'll have to rewatch when I can take notes. Saving this or now. Stamps aren't my thing but after watching this I can see why, they were always harder than It seemed.
Thank you for doing this review! I have always wondered what the differences were and why some smudge and some don't!
I'M NEW TO MEMENTO INK PAD, THAT REALLY HELPED ME THANKS
what a brilliant video - the best explanation ever. Great!
terrific tutorial....great explanations....thanks!!
Great video - can't thank you enough for your clarity on those three ink pads.
Thanks so much for this video......great to know why they work the way they do.....thanks again

Needed a refresh and knew where to go. Thank you!

all clear stamps stain no matter what you do - if you clean them immediately it helps but even after inking up once they're stained for good.
Very informative, thanks fro sharing. I'm not real good with stamping so that really helps!
Thanks for the information, finally someone talks about this ink pads. I love Versafine, but with this info I will try Memento Tuxedo.
Great info, have you tried the India Ink. It dries super fast annd doen't bleed when using markers. the one ink makes the markers bleed because, as I learned in a class, oil and water don't mix.

I love the Versafine! Thanks for all the info.
Very informative and appreciated video. Your thoughts on Stazon black ink vs the ones you chose please? Also, I have a hard time with white ink so I am looking for your best recommendation on that? White ink on black cardstock. Thank you.
I Have no problems with copic and versa fine when dry
Thanks Amy! This was a great tutorial. I was just trying to figure out what kind of ink pads I should add to my collection and now I know ;)

It would work fine I'm sure - they're water-based so it would be similar to the Distress Markers.
Excellent video. Really appreciate this information. Thank you! Laurie
thanks for this great tutorial, you explain it so well. Is it possible to refill memento markers at home? I've tried just dipping the nib, but it doesn't last very long.
they aren't refillable
Hello! Great video! :) I just wondered, can you watercolor images that has stamped outlines with Memento? How about coloring images with Distress Ink, that has outlines done with Memento? I don't color with copic markers, only watercolor and Distress Inks. :)

So glad I found this! Lifesaver! Thanks so much.
Thank you! Can you let Brilliance air dry without using heat? If so, how long do you recommend?
I have momento have had it for years but I want to get the other 2 just have not had the money yet.
I love stamping with Versafine =)
can u make a clear stamp collection or all stamps clear and wood stamps collection??? :)
pigment ink doesn't bead on clear stamps - dye/water based inks can bead/pool. As far as placing a pad under the paper when stamping it's up to personal preference. Thanks for the information Amy. I, too love Memento! I want to start using Versafine too - just haven't bought a pad yet. :)

Martha Stewart brand - I have a video on my channel talking about the different Craft Mats I've used
The stamp names are listed in the annotations throughout the video. And they are linked in my blog post which is linked directly below the video. :)
Wow! That was awesome review. Thank you for your time and great explanations.
again, awesome information, you rock with these review vids, thanks so much for sharing! Just wondering, do you store any of these upside down, or do you find right side up works just fine?
Thank you! This is very helpful for this newbie crafter!
In the years since, have you changed what your favorite black inks are?
Thanks for all the info about these inks.

yup - it's on my to-do list to film a new faves video!!

thanks so much. you have saved me so much time. bless you xx
that was already addressed in the video
Really helpful!! thank you so so much for taking the time to go over all of that :)
hi Amy, just wanted to know if the versafine ink is still one of your to go to for water coloring. tia hugs Cindy
Is the Brilliance ink good for embossing? Thanks for the tips.
I so needed this video!! TFS all of this great info!!
yes I said that in the video :)

I don't do any of that so I can't help you sorry
Cathy holmes hi Cathy, if you stamp with stazon colour on the reverse side, stazon is alcohol based and will react to the markers.
how does the versa fine work with SU markers?
Very helpful! Thanks!
I know this is an old video, but the "Mom" it's so beautiful. What's the brand a so fort?

Hi, Love your review videos - they are so helpful, thank you so much. :)
Thanks for this review, it really cleared a lot of questions up for me! TFS~Tracy
So helpful! TFS
Thank you, very informative!
Informative!
I've never tried it.
this was great thanks
Great share thanks
What is the name of your markers?
They're probably great inks. I've never used them so I can't compare sorry.
Cool thankz nice vid
