Watching a new episode of The Basics early Saturday morning reminds me so much of my childhood when I would wake up early Saturday morning to watch an episode of Transformers.
Cliffjumper was my very first Transformer toy back in the 80s. I had seen and fell in love with the show, and one day my mom came home from shopping and had a Transformer each for me and my older brother. He got Bumblebee, and despite my getting the ‘worse’ of the two, I was hooked for life.
"The Autobot that everyone seems to think is Bumblebee" Yeah except that when Bumblebee dies, he comes back meanwhile Cliff Jumper is the designated "Must die" Autobot unfortunately
@AntoniosPL that's still too much. Sure Prime and Starscream die more than him but for a (usually) a supporting character he tend to die a lot. Name a supporting character that dies more than him.
I think my favorite part about Cliffjumper is that the original was voiced by the late Casey Kasem, who also voiced Robin in the old Batman and Superfriends cartoons, the computer Teletraan 1 (also from G1), and the first and best voice of Shaggy Rogers in Scooby Doo media right up until his death.
My first, ever transformer back in 84. Him and hubcap were the only minibots I ever had as a kid. So pleased to get both again all these years later when Earthrise came around
The Prime incarnation is my favorite design for his alt-mode, but the IDW version is my favorite version of his character. I don't own any IDW TF comics, but I've seen bits and pieces online, and I love these two scenes with Cliffjumper: 1) Bumblebee and Jetfire are stranded in space. Bumble questions, "who's gonna be just waiting around for a red light to come on?!" The very next panel, a red light comes one and Cliffjumper has a beaming smile, ready for action. 2) A bunch of Decepticons tell their commander they attacked an Autobot and there's nothing to worry about. The commander asks, "is he short?" 'Yes.' "Is he red?" 'Yes.' "Does he have horns?" 'Yes.' "(panicked) MAN YOUR BATTLE STATIONS!!!"
Cliffjumper was my favorite as a kid. I always thought he had a cool voice and since he was one of the mini figures his retail price was low so a lot of kids had him. Unfortunately, I was never able to get my own figure until I was an adult. 😥
I always saw Cliffjumper and Brawn as the two premiere examples of "short-bot syndrome". Always picking fights with more powerful Decepticons and never really learning a lesson from doing so.
Hasbro did ole Cliffy good in Earthrise, finally showing some respect to the red horned-head. I mean c'mon, Deathsaurus causes larger bots anxiety but Cliffjumper steps up and takes him down.
In Fall of Cybertron, when you access the Teletraan store when playing as Cliffjumper, it sometimes tells you, "Glass gas is unavailable." I had no idea that was a joke until just now.
The 2019 continuity also kind of homaged the Cliffjumper dying thing with Deathsaurus fantasizing about killing him over and over again since he is holding a grudge for getting his ass kicked.
I had read that Casey Kasem had departed the Transformers series in the third season due to the depiction of Arabs in one of the episodes. While I'm unsurprised you didn't cover that, I'd still like to know more information on that. Also, there were pretty great Cliffjumpers in the 2000's cartoons. He deserves to be his own character and design! What in the world is the 2007 movie recolor?! That's enough to give one nightmares!
it's sort of understandable why he didn't cover it since that's something more tied to the G1 cartoon itself and not the character, plus Cliff's absence in the series was probably a combination of Casey's dissatisfaction with said depiction and Hasbro already geared to phase him out anyway
I liked the Aligned version of Cliffjumper, it shows that you might have started out with a similar body frame, ut you can choose choose what your forms are later in life. comparing how they looked in the Cybertron War games and centuries later on Earth with different Alt. mods.
The Fall of Cybertron level made me an instant fan of both Cliffjumper and Jazz. I hope we get to see them buddy up again in something soon! (Best fistbump ever.)
Honestly, I'm glad that some versions of cliffjumper has his own unique design instead of just being "the red bumblebee" he deserves much better than that
He'll always be much more than just a simple red Bumblebee in my eyes. Cliffjumper's his own bot, and he always will be. Plus, I'm really glad he came first for once, in Earthrise. :)
My headcanon is that Cliffjumper is something like a sibling type relationship with Bumblebee with the transformation and design being similar even if they are technically not the exact same in Alt mode. Like that bots that share a similar transformation and body type tend to see each other as something akin to family or somewhat close based on how close they were.
I love Cliffjumper! I have always liked him more than Bumblebee. He is much more daring, he have eve beated Starscream and many other decepticons on his own! He deserves the Proper Master Piece Treatment, not "Red Bumblebee".
Even though I liked Bumblebee while I watched the G1 cartoon as a kid, I LOVED Cliffjumper. I was a fan of the way he always wanted to jump into battle enjoyed his team-ups with Hound & Jazz. Hope he gets to show more of his stuff in future projects.
The fact that Prime Cliffjumper was voiced by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson blows my mind! The Rock playing a Transformer, and an Autobot at that?! Mind BLOWN!!
That time Cliffjumper got turned into a Human and secretly ended up being a Tsuburaya Superhero to fight Gijinka-SG- Prime's Kaiju creations. Man I love SSSS Gridman.
4:15 That vehicle mode is sick. They should've just done that in red and made it Cliffjumper's vehicle mode from then on. I guess Energon Cliffjumper just didn't have enough of an impact for that to happen.
I believe it's official you are "The" Transformers Historian... every part of human history should have it's own experts and recorders of events... I'm certainly glad that you are ours!
Playing as Cliffjumper during the sea of rust mission was so much fun, I loved being able to assassinate Decepticons and the whole stealth approach. Fall of Cybertron was such a good game! 😁👌✨🔥
Cliffjumper's vehicle mode in Earthrise has got to be my favorite version of this angry acorn. It's practically an amalgamation of all of his previous modes. From his cute and compact Porsche from the g1 series, to the cool and sleek muscle car from Prime. I've truly never seen a vehicle that practically screams Cliffjumper than in Earthrise.
It's actually an amalgamation of a Porsche 924 and a Mitsubishi Starion, a small Japanese sports car from the eighties (I use the term amalgamation loosely, since it's basically a Starion with a 924's taillights). It has nothing to do with any muscle cars.
@@SirBroccolingtonIII oh I am aware. I was more or less referring to the overall vibe. It's has a certain edge to it that reminds me of Prime's Cliffjumper vehicle mode. It's hard to explain but I'm definitely aware Earthrise Cliffjumper is a loose combination of those vehicles you mentioned. Either way, whoever designed Earthrise Cliffjumper put so much love to it and I adore it all the more.
7:12/7:17 Except in my Robertverse where (in a similar manner to the Universe comic), Primus brought him back from the dead. This happened after the series ended btw.
Red bumblebee. I would love to imagine a new TF series having cliffjumper for one scene and it's him getting killed off again... That would be hilarious
Nah, that just boring... I think that there can be another scene, where Cliffjumper somehow recolored to the yellow, and everyone starts to name him Bumblebee, what will make Cliffjumper pissed off, and he will shout out something like: "I AM CLIFFJUMPER!!! STOP MUDDLE ME WITH BUMBLEBEE!!!"
The scene at 3:06 when Cliffjumper elbows Megatron in the leg and gets smacked across the room is as funny to me now as it was when I first saw it for the first time as a kid in the 80's!
2:16 just realized that Cliffjumper's G1 face design is suppose to resemble the Autobot insignia (you can really see it when comparing it to his toy art's insignia, 1:23)
I once stole my Dad's Cliffjumper toy as a kid. I still don't know cars very well, but I thought he was a racing beetle and the old Volkswagen beetles are my favorite cars. I mainly kept it in vehicle mode, transforming him so he could catch a cliff made of books or something when playing with him and my mini-con collection. It bugs me that they used him for the Bumblebee movie just to be killed to progress plot. They really could've used any Autobot, especially ones with a history of looking similar to him and Bumblebee if they didn't want to make a new model. Though I don't get the myth that he always dies. He has two deaths of just him and any others he's part of the discontinued toy massacre because Hasbro didn't know how kids work.
The reason is that the most well-known versions of Cliffjumper are famous for dying, and since some less popular versions also end up dying in their own respective continuities, people assume that he's always killed off.
Always saw Cliff Jumper as a "tough guy in a small package!" One who shouldn't be underestimated for his size! Sadly I never knew he would suffer so many disasters in his life - from being the mistaken for a bumble bee recolor...to his many deaths...to being overshadowed by his little brother!
The thing about Cliffjumper that I don't think a lot of folk get - and this includes some of the people who've written him! - is that his brand of toughness is more a sort of "doggedness" than it is actually being strong. He's always ready to dive into a fight - but he's only got a Tech Spec Strength rating of 4, so he's not very likely to actually win it! He's really the Autobot Scrappy-Doo more than anything else - his bio even includes the quote "Lemme at 'em!"
Cliffjumper is pretty much the most popular recolor character. Dude keeps being mistaken for a red Bumblebee, he’s characterized as a hothead, shows up in more cartoons than most other recolor characters since G1, ever since Prime everyone thought he died a lot, it goes to show that the little dude’s very stand-out even in the smallest of roles.
He is my favorite ever since I read my first comic being the Cliffjumper Spotlight. Never mess with the red runt with horns. He's feared by the Deceptions

Very interesting! I really like Cliffjumper‘a portrayal in the G1 cartoon, and hope to pick up his figure someday.
The Casey Kasem Cliffjumper from the OG cartoon is one of my all-time favorite Transformers.
Cliffjumper has always been one of my favorite here’s hoping he gets a big role that isn’t him dying
"The Autobot that everyone seems to think is Bumblebee"
Yeah except that when Bumblebee dies, he comes back meanwhile Cliff Jumper is the designated "Must die" Autobot unfortunately
Yeah it's unfortunate that cliffjumper tends to be the character who just is there to die to show how evil the villain is
@AntoniosPL He died in the Marvel g1 comics as well.
@AntoniosPL that's still too much. Sure Prime and Starscream die more than him but for a (usually) a supporting character he tend to die a lot. Name a supporting character that dies more than him.
@AntoniosPL how about animated? He even become elite guard
@AntoniosPL He died in both the Marvel UK and Marvel US comics in different ways though, making it five deaths.
Prime Cliffjumper just felt the most unique, in my opinion. He had a full personality that actually made it suck that he died.
My first, ever transformer back in 84. Him and hubcap were the only minibots I ever had as a kid. So pleased to get both again all these years later when Earthrise came around
The Prime incarnation is my favorite design for his alt-mode, but the IDW version is my favorite version of his character.
I don't own any IDW TF comics, but I've seen bits and pieces online, and I love these two scenes with Cliffjumper:
1) Bumblebee and Jetfire are stranded in space.
9:45 I really thought you were gonna say “than meets the eye”
I said to myself More than meets the eye and was so utterly disappointed when it didn’t say that. Missed opportunity for sure
Been waiting for this for a long time, glad to see Cliffjumper get some appreciation outside of toy shelfs.
He made a brief reference to it during his video on Teletraan I, which Kasem also voiced and showed how Teletraan II was changed to Frank Welker
it's sort of understandable why he didn't cover it since that's something more tied to the G1 cartoon itself and not the character, plus Cliff's absence in the series was probably a combination of Casey's dissatisfaction with said depiction and Hasbro already geared to phase him out anyway
Well, when you're of Arab decent, and the writers want you to reference a fictional Middle Eastern country called "Carbombya"...
(Racist as f***....)
@@sephiroth4857 That's likely the reason I actually know that 😂
@@Davethe3rd Hell, ive seen alot of stereotypes used for comedy purpose way back when, but that was just to much...
Tbh, I only began liking him once I read the IDW Cliffjumper spotlight comic, still though I slightly prefer Bumblebee...
Cliffjumper is getting his time to shine in the new comic by Skybound!!
I don't hold any nostalgia for toys from the 80s, but the vibe of these videos is so upbeat I watch just to stave off the depression.
Fun fact: the beetle was actually made by Porsche’s founder
More like requested by the moustache man himself.
And ripped off the design of a Tatra vehicle.
The fact that Prime Cliffjumper was voiced by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson blows my mind! The Rock playing a Transformer, and an Autobot at that?! Mind BLOWN!!
I always thought Cliffjumper was Bumblebees older brother since they were so similar in the cartoon.
Cliffjumper is my absolute favorite Transformer ever! I feel him on a personal level, and he absolutely needs more representation in all media!
Even when he suffered from the Transformers version of red-shirt syndrome, Prime's version of Cliffjumper was my favorite so far.
My favorite character Cliffjumper, he’s an absolutely fantastic character fight me, I will love him forever as my favorite Autobot
@@mariaisabelg4701 Yeah. A lot of eighties Japanese cars looked like muscle cars, despite being quite a bit smaller.
Bumblebee movie: *sweating profusely*
Well then look no further than tf prime he dies in ep 1
Please no
Nah, that just boring...
Kinda surprised that you didn’t mention his original voice actor, Casey Kasim, and the issue surrounding him quitting the G1 show.
?
He did mention Casey but not the reason he quit...
...which was the Libya parody "Carbombya"
2:16 just realized that Cliffjumper's G1 face design is suppose to resemble the Autobot insignia (you can really see it when comparing it to his toy art's insignia, 1:23)
Prowl's face: Am I a joke to you?
I'm just sick of the "Cliffjumper always dies LOL" jokes.
[Insert Cliffjumper always dies joke here]
Cliff is my boy he’s always been my favorite.
Wait. Gen-1 Cliffjumper was basically Jazz's younger brother? (In terms of the auto mode.) Who knew!?
"My name is Cliffjumper. Member of the Autobot resistance."
Nemesis Prime.
Starscream rode that “I slayed Cliffjumper” high for the whole series.
Today's focus is Clif-
Oh... He's dead.
My favourite is prime incarnation because of the way he looks, acts and they actually incorporated his horns into his vehicle mode
I'm getting deja vu.
Could've sworn he'd
already covered him.
Are you a patron?
Same I feel like I've seen this before
I think we are confusing this with the Rodimus Primal video.
Yep! Me too
He is my favorite ever since I read my first comic being the Cliffjumper Spotlight. Never mess with the red runt with horns. He's feared by the Deceptions
"Cliffjumper is frequently mistaken for Bumblebee"
Hubcap: *anxiety intensifies*
*Goldbug cries in a corner*
Bumper and Bugbite: * Heavy breathing *

I always loved my man Cliff Jumper, always wanted him in the Bayverse movies after seeing him in Prime when I was little!
