    The sterilization of the potting soil 100% works. I have worked as a scientist in biology for a couple of years. It is often done when studying plant pests to make sure that the effects are actually from the pathogen that you infected them with not with something already in the soil. But when done for a certain amount time at a certain temperature the soil will be biologically dead. So you will need to add all the nutrients back. Once again awesome for science maybe not for your houseplants.😅 anyways love your content ❤

    You know your videos are amazing and i love watching them especially because they don't make me feel like I need to run out and spend money all the time. You make me laugh (love your sense of humor) but I can relax and enjoy the content. Very nice fresh perspective in a world that revolves around consumerism. Its really easy not to notice but hard to maintain self control when everything encourages everyone to go out and buy everything.

    I took all my plants out of their Terra cotta pots and now they are thriving. Terra made my soil constantly hard and dry and stunted their growth. In the plastic pots they look happy and thriving and I don’t have to water them like every other day. 😀

    As a new plant parent, thank you for this video.
    Navigating plant advice on the internet and especially TH-cam is the WILD WILD WEST. Literally you get advice varying on all ends of the spectrum and it is overwhelming to discern.
    I think learning through experience is just the best and figuring out how your individual plants behave.

      You are so right! We learn the most through experience
      Each House and each room in a house is so different!
      When sifting through advice on TH-cam… I like to look at these things:
      - Do the plants look good
      - Have they owned that specific plant for a while (preferably over a year)
      - Is their climate similar to mine

    Can’t wait to see your succulents collection tour!! And YESSS!!! Too many have misconceptions about succulents. They need water just as much as any other plant. It’s just the watering needs are a bit different. It depends on the soil, pot and climate. I grow most mine indoors all year long and water every two to three weeks. (Succulents in Terra cotta pots) Occasionally I water after a month if I get busy. And terra cotta pots dry out faster and need to be watered more often than if you put in ceramic or plastic pots. I have found the succulents I plant in ceramic pots can go a month or more without watering. And usually I only bottom water those ones because otherwise if you water from the top the ceramic pots don’t dry out as quickly. And then root rot happens. Or the leaves “explode” and get translucent from sucking up too much water. It’s all bad. 😅
    And of course you need fans to help with air circulation growing indoors otherwise your succulents will get powdery mildew. #ItsANightmare
    Ok I’ve said enough. 😂
    Can’t wait to see your collection!! ❤

    Sterilizing the soil with hot boiling water is correct, but not right in the pot with plants , do it when you want to plant something else in the same soil , so after you finish harvesting from the plant and or the plant dies off just put the used soil in a bag after sifting it from roots and rocks and pour hot boiling water on it wrap the bag and leave it in the sun for a week , then you can add the needed nutrients and it’s good to use it again :)! I saw a japanese gardner do this here on youtube his name is noringo , it’s pretty amazing!

    When I heard super glue I thought it was going to be about attaching epiphytic plants to stuff. Boy was I wrong lmao.

  • @lynkin
    @lynkin 12 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    As an avid plant collector, I set up and care for fish aquariums 🐠.I use super glue gel to attach epiphytic aquatic plants to driftwood and rocks as these plants cannot be planted into the aquarium 🐟 substrate. Thread or fishing line may harm the aquatic plant growth. The glue gel does not harm the aquatic plants. Of course I do NOT use super glue on my house plants 😊

  • @kiyuemadkick
    @kiyuemadkick 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

    I'm going to have to disagree with the super glue comment. Coral frag glue for example is is used to grow sensitive coral and fundamentall becomes inert when dry. Meaning its not active enough to become phytotoxic. It coral frag glue is super glue. I have use it to seal cuttings and mount orchids.

    • @TheMillennialPlantDad
      @TheMillennialPlantDad  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Coral frag glue I’m assuming is organic? Super glue is all chemicals and synthetically made, no way that should be near your plants .

      @@TheMillennialPlantDad It's ALL cyanoacrylate my friend. When it gets in touch with water its molecular bonds tighten (cures) instantly between 2 surfaces it is more toxic to humans than it is plants btw. Im talking the gas it let's off, once cured it's as toxic as fake fingernails. It becomes acrillic.

    • @kiyuemadkick
      @kiyuemadkick 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@TheMillennialPlantDad Its all Cyanoacrylate my firend. It becomes acrillic and as toxic as false fingernails. Its fumes are toxic but when it dries it does nothing.
      Water helps it cure fast a little goes a long way. Its situational if I want to hand the cutting fast I will use glue. If time is not an issue I would go for your suggestion as they have hormonal elements that are not inert.
      Your aloe vera is a very natural alternative and has hormones an awesome recommendation and also cinnamon.

    I so hate the term “neglect” for plants!
    When grandma and grandpa advised to let soil dry out before watering…. They didn’t mean leave it bone dry for a week or longer and let the soil turn hydrophobic… 😅
    Terracotta is such a hit or miss thing…. (Unless people live in a really wet climate)
    Starting in plastic is so much safer and terracotta can still make a nice cover pot for those who like the look

    I think ZZ plant, I won't say "thrives on neglect", but definitely seems to do better when given a level of neglect. I mean, it is a plant that doesn't want you to water it the second the soil goes dry, it wants to wait a bit for you to wet that soil again. My friend had a huge one, she would water it maybe once a month and I was horrified but the plant was large and lush. By comparison, I am picking up Anthuriums on the daily to make sure I don't need to water any of them, they would not be happy being treated like a ZZ.

I like big bushy plants some of the prop videos cutting something to bits for no reason makes me go Grrr.. Like a year or two ago you'd see someone get a cutting and it get new growth and the person would then cut it to bits making it a Frankenstien plant trying to then sell off the cuttings as a turn around then throw it back into a green house cabinet like it's a puppy mill stealing its kids for income.

    The hot water one can eliminate pests, but it’s like hydrogen peroxide, you have to return the nutrients to the soil afterwards with compost or fertilizer. I’ve done it before in desperation, but the soil afterwards, if you don’t add fresh soil, bark, or what have you to it, has a clumpy texture that doesn’t breathe.
