I absolutely LOVE the looser over the tighter though both are beautiful. I learned a lot, thank you!

Being new to watercolor, I desperately needed to see the difference between tight and loose demonstrated. Thank you! So far, I am drawn more to the loose and mixed media....but have appreciation for the tight, as well. I am trying to learn to use more watercolor in the journals I make. So both styles can be useful. You are so very talented! I appreciate this tutorial. 🤗🥰

A late comment.. have to say this is so interesting and just illustrates the differences beautifully! The tight version is a lovely study and very pretty. The loose version is a real painting with flare and movement. But you know this!😂. Thank you Karen, you are so talented and what fantastic teaching. 😊.

Very helpful video. Personally I find myself more creative and natural when painting loose. And your videos and unique style have helped a lot (your atmospheric landscapes are the best in the world, Karen :). So thank you for being such a good teacher!.

    Hi Karen
I'm more of a tight painter, but trying to let go a little. I love your loose , abstract style. Both versions are lovely. This is a very helpful tutorial for me. 🥰

I like more the control of realistic paint, I’m not into the abstract, maybe I don’t have an artistic eye but I always go with the realistic, small brushes and little water, love your first paint!

This video was AWESOME! I have a hard time finding tight watercolor tutorials. And while I know everyone really loves the loose style, I instinctively lean towards realism. It was really fun watching you do the tight vs loose right beside each other. Thanks so much for sharing

Such delight in these beauties! And so much teaching in such a short time --I love how you juxtaposed the two versions --tight and loose--and really show the differences --and loveliness--in each. Both are ethereal --and the loose foxgloves seem to dance on the paper. So interesting too to consider how the pigments seem to be more vibrant with the loose approach as the pigments are free to mix and mingle with water and with each other. I'm finding this too with hot press watercolour paper --the paint seem to float on the surface! So many beautiful techniques here --wow! Thank you so much for painting foxgloves!!

This was so fun and helpful! I love how you are not judgemental about different styles or about your own personal preference or techniques either. I came across another youtube watercolor video and the instructor was a bit perfectionist and it made me feel like if she was critical of her own technique, how am I ever going to be that good? So thank you for the way you teach! I thought I would like the looser style more but I actually love them both and that feels encouraging to me because as a beginner I feel intimidated by the tight style. So the fact that I like it means maybe I can try it too!

Love foxgloves. Love snapdragons as well. It's fun to draw but harder to paint. I tend to overwork due to wanting to fiddle on the details. Wich in my case is paper issue related. I need the bit more rigid paper. I tried with all my might to not get hungup on arches due to the price. Only to findout that even a fabriano artistico or hahnemuhle 100% cotton are to soft wich leaves me with uneven splotches. I guess that means back to arches for me. I tried to be less heavy handed. But that does not seem to happen for me nomatter wich way I try. But average cotton papers are to soft for that lol.

Thank you for sharing… I have to say Arches paper is the best. It’s always good though to try different papers. I love Saunders Waterford 300gsm, CP and Rough surface 😊

I think each are beautiful. Not sure why loose seems to be winning on Pinterest, though. I'd hate to think it's because, like a lot of other things these days, easier wins.
