    Just a note of precaution, when using these ovens outdoors be very cautious about placing a perimeter where you will be using it, especially if little ones are present. Hot coals can cause nasty little burns, on feet or hands and sometimes we can get distracted and accidentally step or touch. Keep little ones away and have safety enclosure such as big rocks or something for the enclosure. Happy camping!! 😊😃

      There is no teacher like experience. You can tell kids something is hot and will burn and even try to keep them away At some point they are going to touch a hot something and get burned. Life lesson learned.

    May i add one for cleaning: put water and soap in it, bring it to boiling point, wait for it to cool down to lukewarm and clean all leftovers out with a sponge or brush. That way you´ll easily get any burnt in leftovers away, without damaging your coating. Because, like the lovely lady here said, you please DO NOT USE any metal tools for cleaining your dutch oven!
    Otherwise: great video, that is how you get beginners into the art of cooking with a dutch oven! It´s not a fast food way, this one gathers people around and you cherish the food much more, than just ordering and have it ready within a minute!

    After cleaning my cast iron cookware, I make sure it is dry and then coat it with coconut oil. Not too much. It will help to prevent rust formation.

    Nice video. But would like to correct you on a point. Some points that others may not know as well. "Dutch" oven is a common name, as that is the name of the oven/furnace that was used to make your cast iron pot. A "Dutch" oven has no legs, flat base and a domed lid with drippers for self basting and generally hangs above a fire or coals. What you are using is a "Camp" oven, it has legs to sit on coals with a relatively flat lid with a higher lip around the circumference to hold coals when placed on the top. A "Bedouri" is yet another cast iron 'dutch' / 'camp' oven as well. Not picking on you but thought it would be nice if people knew the difference.

    • @HootOwl513
      @HootOwl513 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually Cobber, In American usage, they're all dutch ovens because it was Dutch traders who sold the first ones to the colonists even before the Revolution. So we coined the generic term about 300 years ago.. If you brought a Bedourie oven to the US, we'd say, ''Oh look, an Australian steel dutch oven.'' Casserole LeCreuset = French dutch oven. A Dutch ,,Braadpan'' = Dutch oven. It was the Patriot silversmith Paul Revere who added the 3 legs and rimmed lid to the dutch oven, which you insist is a . Here we call those dutch ovens, too.
      Best tool for handling them is the aluminum Boy Scout Dutch Oven Pliers, with 30* angled jaws and a bale hook on one handle end.

    With legs it's called a camp dutch oven. Without legs it's called a dutch oven. I bought the camp dutch oven and use it inside. I have a gas range and the legs are able to fit in between the grates, same in the oven; legs fit in between the oven rack wires.

    • @MountainMomTots

    Because of temperature difference, is there any possibility of cracking? So far, I used to warm it a little bit before place it on.
    Thanks in advance!

      You can but the cast iron takes awhile to heat up before the food starts to cook if you leave the lid on. Best to preheat if using the lid.

    So if my cast iron dutch oven has legs I can’t use it on my electric stove burners??

    • @MountainMomTots
      @MountainMomTots  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry I'm just getting to this. If your dutch oven has legs you could still use it in a regular oven and have the legs poke down through the oven rack, but if the main base of the pot doesn't touch the burner of the stovetop, it won't likely cook well. So no. I would use a different pot on your electric stovetop.

      This prevents hot spots!

    • @MountainMomTots
      @MountainMomTots  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry it took me so long to respond. Basically you want to rotate the pot and the lid a little bit in different directions while cooking (every 10 to 15 minutes or so) so that the coals heat the food inside in a more well-rounded way. If you don't rotate the pot and the lid, the food will still cook, but there might be burned spots or hot areas.

    Boiling foods in your Dutch oven is very bad for your so is tomato-based products

    • @MountainMomTots
      @MountainMomTots  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, I have heard the acidic nature of tomatoes can damage the metal. Basically I'm a lazy dutch oven chef and don't mind taking the risk of boiling or cooking with tomatoes since the worst that would happen would be that I'd have to reseason the pot. I'd rather just make food I know my family will eat and not worry about the cookware too much.

      Really? Have you used a chimney? That really helps. I havent tried many different kids of charcoal but I didn't notice any significant slow lighting or burning with generic coals - I usually just buy the cheapest brand

    • @Rhythmicons
      @Rhythmicons 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MountainMomTots I tried for three hours to get it to light in a chimney. It's possible that I got a bad batch. Compared to a regular smooth piece of coal, these were all jagged like they had been exposed to moisture or had been burned before. I put in the Kingsford and immediately set about preheating my oven. Look at the most recent video on my channel where I cooked curry in a Lodge 14' and I compared the two.
