@@Tiniere That is exactly how I understand it. Each battle/trainer only knows your own pokemon's ability after it is activated. It’s funny that not once, but twice, Scott was nervous about getting paralyzed by a gym leader when he mentions multiple times in the playthrough that Hitmonlee has Limber and cannot be paralyzed. It’s understandable though when you consider that Scott has played considerably more Gen 1 before there were abilities. Either way, great video
Heyoo! Dude, I love your content so much. Your commentary is hilarious, I learn so much about my favourite games, and now feel inspired to do my own solo challenges.
Hi Scott! Everyone's telling you about limber, but you should also remember that Brick Break can destroy Reflect and Light Screen. So in that fight against Sabrina you probably should have used Brick Break against the Kadabra instead of Secret Power. Since it breaks the wall before the damage calculation (afaik) it actually deals more damage than Secret Power, and it opens up the rest of the fight. You only need a +1 to sweep with Brick Break into Secret Power spam.
I think not teaching return was a misplay. It would’ve given you a much better range on a quite a few fights. Also not using bulk up when the AI would use a healing item was also a misplay. Still really fun to watch!! Super excited for the rest of December!

Love how this video came not too far after FSG’s video about how the fighting types got better every generation. Like once they got better coverage moves, more reliable and stronger STAB moves, along with great abilities? So many fighting types just wreck the game starting in Gen 3.
It's strange that scott doesn't route a lot of his fights, I mean I watch anyways but the habit of not optimizing fights that were easy the first time makes lots of good mons underperform in their second playthroughs Low-key that's why jrose's approach is better, he doesn't make use of all these tools so none of the wasted potential matters. Scotts runs seem to have the ambition to be much more objective and less personal, but are still full of flaws I don't mind the mistakes really, it's just a little odd given the focus on perfection how many he never catches even after comments explain tactical concepts all the time and divulge general information about the game. I also wonder if Scott ever times chains of events for individual runs, he has timed various out of the way rare candies but his routing still seems to be done a lot by feel, without checking oppoosing damge ranges or making sure that there are actual winning odds, other than level thresholds for certain fights for outspeeds and ohkoes. Doing the math on confusion strats and low accuracy moves is very valuable but hasn't been done yet. Allegedly in favor of consistency and more solid play, but uhhhh mega punch spam in this video. Like ngl that move was never the right click over jump kick or rock tomb, mega kick would've at least provided the value of being stronger. Mega punch is specifically a good pick if you only use it for Misty, but that didn't happen. Not using hjk over brick break is also fine, but not mentioning it's much lower base power compared to newer gens would've been more compelling reasoning than accuracy + recoil, when jump kick has the same recoil drawback but was spammed confidently. (And with the inclusion of resets this isn't a classic speedrun anyways, which in my eyes makes taking slight risk for immediate gain much more appealing since you're never avoiding retries) Tl;dr sorry for being a bit of a hater scott, I like your videos but I'm not alone in noticing contradictions between your standards and your routing/play. Especially since you care about a lot of advanded stuff only to never implement it. I think it could help you if you challenged yourself to playing a completely different type of Pokemon game to make yourself get some new ideas and practice, it's only natural to be stuck in a habit after doing the same thing for four years straight. (I have been watching diligently) Being this overleveled all the time makes play forgiving, and by extension makes it easy to miss/not have to bother with certain intricacies that are natural to other challenge runners and who being aware of could improve your skill. Again it's the framing that makes it, when you started it was a loose personal and for fun project about challenging yourself where all of that was negligible. Now you're presenting with a primary focus on professionalism while not having adjusted your play to fit that persona better.

Isn't Iron Fist only like 10 or 20% boosting? Nothing compared to Strong Jaw or any of the other damage boosting abilities. That ability is long overdue for a butf. If not more power, at least give it the effect of the new Punching Glove items to prevent contact and protect it from static and flame body
In normal FRLG gameplay, Hitmonchan bodies Hitmonlee. The higher Defense matters a lot, Sky Uppercut covers the power gap, Mach Punch will probably be your strongest option for priority (unless you're specifically playing FR and get Arcanine, and even then), and there's even edge cases where Ice Punch or Thunderpunch could be ok in spite of running off a useless stat due to 4x weaknesses. It's probably worse in this format but it's not in a bad spot.
I think my core memory with Hitmonlee is either its cry in the Pokemon Stadium games, or its appearance in the original Super Smash Bros. where it does its High Jump Kick toward an opponent.
Looking at HitmonLee's learnset reminded me of an old rpg design concept where to give players a satisfying feeling of progression the upgrades should have more benefits than costs; here the case would be with Rolling/Jump/ HiJump Kick: 3 signature moves at this point in time for Lee that as a physical meleee fighter you'd expect him to grow Stronger and more Precise at the cost of more Stamina consuption. The elegant way to show this would be imo (not considering the additional effects) to keep their Power at 60/70/85, switch Accuracy to 85/90/95% and PP to 25/20/15 Tnx for the constant source of epiphanies and inspirations :)
Having done a Red run with this on my main channel…yeah, I don’t think a single one of us doubted it would be better here in comparison. Anything Hitmonlee has now beats having to deal with Meditate boosting on Pidgeot, using Seismic Toss against Agatha’s Ghosts, and nearly getting haxed by Exeggutor of all things.
@@snakeywakey3893 Well, Gen 4 is when they first buffed Jump Kick and Hi Jump Kick. They did it again in 5 to make it basically just the best Fighting move in the game, and Jump Kick one of the best.
SlideQuake coverage feels like bait here. Fighting+Normal covers every Pokémon in the game except Ghosts and Aerodactyl with better base power and accuracy than Rock Slide+EQ. Foresight for Agatha/Tower and you’re golden. I get why you did this, it’s basically like Return in G2, if a mon gets SlideQuake you run it, but also I don’t think its actually necessary or optimal.
Fighting and Rock is better in Kanto to utilize for Fighting types. The only thing that resists both are the Nidos from Giovanni, but Giovanni is a joke.
Honestly, Hitmonlee is surprisingly good in generation one. It starts with mediate, so it has a relevant badge boosting move, gets all of the "good" fighting type moves, decent growth rate and mostly good stats. While double kick isn't a great move, it's good enough to get through the early gyms and can keep Hitmonlee going until it can start learning moves through level or TM. It's obviously not a top teir pokemon, but it's not terrible like most of the other fighting type pokemons. I think that a big part of the fight types glow up in emerald is the massive increase in the prominence of the dark type. It doesn't exist in gen 1, and it's barely used in jhoto in gen 2, where as in emerald you are fighting them throughout the entire game and both enemy teams heavily use them. There are just so many chances for fighting types to be useful in emerald, plus the quality of moves & learnsets has increased overall.
The reason why the Rival sent out Tyranitar is because it had Aerial Ace as one of its moves and prioritized it when checking for Pokémon to send out. Some smooth brain moves in this run but considering how some old habits linger it is understandable why you thought you needed a Cheri berry on a Pokémon that has Limber. Interesting fact, if a Pokémon is paralyzed but suddenly gets the ability Limber, it becomes cured of that status. If there was one buff to a move I'd like to see it would be giving Meditate an additional boost to your accuracy. It is nutty how few Pokémon moves exist that boost accuracy considering how many can drop it.
You forgot about Hitmonlee being a Fighting-type a few times like against Bruno when you opted for Earthquake over Brick Break. And completely forgot Substitute and Return. Still, you did really good. Good run.
In FRLG honestly ground coverage has become a lot worse due to agatha's team being immune to it except her arbok so it is usually redundant for a fighting type where their fighting stab and rock coverage already covers what a ground type will do as well
You didn't use Jump Kick after the Sand Attack for Rival 2.5, most likely, because in the moment you realized that if you missed, it would deal self damage, and you'd probably knock yourself out after 2-3 hits. As for Hitmonchan, I've found that ingame in FRLG, assuming you have team members, it's actually better than Hitmonlee due to slightly higher effective power - because it gets Sky Uppercut, which is just an infinitely better move than Hi Jump Kick in Gen 3. In solo play though I think it will end up being worse. Its STAB options besides Revenge are worse until Sky Uppercut, Agility instead of Meditate, and it has noticeably worse Attack. It is much bulkier though.
To contrast kid-you completely I thought hitmonlee was the coolest thing ever as a kid ! The first time I ever saw it was in the anime during the sinnoh league victors arc where Barry used one against Paul
There's plenty of Limber comments, but I genuinely would love to know if this is Scott accurately portraying his thoughts at the time or if he genuinely forgets about it multiple times while being able to look back on his gameplay with no rush.
It'd be silly but id be curious how hitmon chan does if its special attack matched its special defense so it could use the elemental punches in the older games( pre physical special split)
15:30 strictly, no this may.not be what happened. Gyarados' moveset is just really bad: Bite, Twister Leer and Dragon Rage. Drage is fixed damage and fixed damage moves have a flat priority to be used and dont go through the process of being used to see kills (internally the AI sees it as having a power of 1 which triggers all these exceptions). Drage has no custom AI so its always just sitting at +0 internal priority, and gyara had a 50-50 to pick that over the highest damage it saw between bite and twister, of which twister is gonna be most damage.
The Charizard does actually use STAB Flying moves a few times. Important, too, for Hitmonlee, as they're Physical and thus hit its significantly weaker Defense stat.
Can't wait for Anniliape to debut. It is slow but tanker than Primeape, but if you give it Rage Fist and Drain Punch, it will be a Wrecking Machine. Especially since Ghost is still Physical in this Generation.
I’m gonna agree that earthquake probably isn’t good here, on fighting types, because of Levitate. The Arbok isn’t scary enough, especially with Hitmonlee having Limber.
To be fair he is more used to yellow where fighting moves are so bad and ground types just stomps Agatha and about half of the rival's team, old habits die hard I guess
There was a big red hairy headless monster thing in Looney Tunes that I was scared of as a kid and Hitmonlee always reminded me of it, so I never liked it lol. Now I realize it's probably the strongest of the Hitmons but I still like Chan better.
I'd definitely consider replacing Earthquake with Substitute for the league. EQ is only useful against Arbok and maybe Alakazam, both of whom can be dealt with using Bulk Up + Rock Slide. Substitute might give you much easier setup opportunities. Edit: If Substitute doesn't help you in the E4, Return might be a good option too, as it would give you a stronger and more reliable move against Exeggutor.
Hey scott, you don't need try range to make reversal deal good damage, if you use endure before one battle, and be 1 hp you can finish some fights faster
Hey Scott, idk if you have special rules when it comes to natures, but for this case, you should use adamant for hitmonlee (+atk, - sp. atk) to gain an extra 10% attack stat and a 10% drop on sp atk in which you don’t need

Oh yeah, time for the sentient, kickboxing potato!
that was so suspenseful. hitmonlee did great omg
I think this is my fav video of yours!
I always imagined Hitmonlee with no arms and only body and legs!
There's plenty of Limber comments, but I genuinely would love to know if this is Scott accurately portraying his thoughts at the time or if he genuinely forgets about it multiple times while being able to look back on his gameplay with no rush.
yeh hitmonlee is just creepy, the creepiest drumstick
Fun idea, Pelliper and Torkoal in gen 3 if they had their Drizzle/Drought abilities
Wouldn't Venusaur had been a better rival given that it would resist Hitmonlee?
Plus the double intimidate since he'd have gyarados and arcanine
It’s not SE on Hitmonlee though.
The Charizard does actually use STAB Flying moves a few times. Important, too, for Hitmonlee, as they're Physical and thus hit its significantly weaker Defense stat.
@@TheShinyFeraligatr rival also wouldn’t have exeggcute which is se on fighting
Cool run on the day after thanksgiving 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Why do you care about Cheri Berry, Stun Spore, Static when Hitmonlee has Limber?
Can't wait for Anniliape to debut. It is slow but tanker than Primeape, but if you give it Rage Fist and Drain Punch, it will be a Wrecking Machine. Especially since Ghost is still Physical in this Generation.
Poor Limber. Even when it's remembered, it isn't. XD
I’m gonna agree that earthquake probably isn’t good here, on fighting types, because of Levitate. The Arbok isn’t scary enough, especially with Hitmonlee having Limber.
Why do you do the elite 4 rematch in your fire red solo runs
DAILY DECEMBER LET'S GOOOO IVE BEEN WAITING SINCE LAST DECEMBER
1:05 ooooo arrow changes
Scott, Earthquake is mostly redundant on Fighting types. The only time it was better than Brick Break + Return was against Agatha’s Arbok.
I think fire red is all natural natures.
Hitmonlee is the coolest hitmon.
Hitmonlee is just Gossamer from looney tunes.
You could Mimic Shadow Punch from the Gengar, as an accuracy proof way to defeat Double Team and the rest of Agatha's Ghost types.
"Its eyes are on its body", well, aren't yours as well, Scott?
I think Meditate might be enough to make Hitmonlee a top contender in Crystal too.
29:35 "limber is not known by the ai, we haven't seen this play out yet"
Random rocket Ekans at 9:04 "am I a joke to you" ps, just messing around. Good video so happy for daily December
No way. That means you might be getting close to my boy!
Hitmonlee id one of my favorites
Isn't Hitmonlee immune to static paralysis?
My favorite Pokémon! 😎
Ekans from a rocket used glare earlier than lance with t wave.
I vote to give that random paras a playthrough and name her time loss 😂
So I don’t think you needed that cheri berry when fighting Lt. Surge. Your ability is Limber, it prevents paralysis
Could've been worth it to use Brick Break in the Sabrina fight to get rid of Reflect.
i absolutely want to hear about the accidental paras catch
Who else has Scott's thoughts as their top watched TH-camr for 2024?
Gotta love the Bruce Lee pokemon.
During rival fight at cerulean
You were better off not using jump kick with your misses as it would also damage hitmon extra
So using the bad/weaker mega punch was a better call
Am I insane or is an adamant nature here the only thing that makes sense?
You should do a backport of Alola Raichu into Yellow.
Basically he forgot bulk up with prime ape.
Brick Break is neutral against Jynx because of its...Ice-Typing.
Scott keeps forgetting about limber lol
