That's the first thing we learned in rafting safety class. Always have a rope and spotters ready to assist. Did 3 ays down the salmon and the great snake lake.
As a whitewater instructor, I think these guys were exceptionally lucky. There were so many things done incorrectly and potentially causing death to several members of this group. Highly recommend taking a swift water rescue course with am American Canoe Association Certified Instructor.
I am not an instructor or even that experienced in whitewater at all( 2 trips on the Gauley and many MO class I rapids). But shouldn't the first thing someone on land does is go as far up river as possible to get an angle on the guy with a rope? Seems like the guy on river left should have ran 30 yds upriver on the bank, then threw the rope. They would basically be pulling them straight back. Those guys on river left looked like they were stopping to take a pee and nothing else for the first few minutes. I havent made it that far into the vid yet, its already an annoying vid.
The guy very easily could have drown. If he would have been wedged face down. Very lucky. That water is powerful right there and has a recirculating current

Lot of Monday morning quarterbacking here in the comments. You guys mobilized, communitcated, had your priorities right, “recuse boater first, boat second”. Got the job done. It’s always easier to be critical than creative. Thanks for posting this so others can learn the value of acquiring rescue skills, which you don’t always get while taking some class. Not saying don’t take a class, but just a valuable to boat with experienced paddlers who’ve been in the “hot seat” in real life, unplanned, messy situations. Look out for each other! Cheers.
Our club offers Swift Water Rescue at least once a year. We do actual live rescues that are a mock setup. Each student participates in the rescue and being the victim. There's LOTS to learn on both parts. It's a two day class over a weekend and 8 hours each day mostly all of it in the rapids running real rescues (that are setup). It's invaluable and most of it take the SWR class at least every other year to refresh. We cover boat/person pin situations, learning how to handle a strainer if you're swimming, Z-Drags to get pinned kayaks out, live bait rescues, how to defensively and offensively swim, etc. You can't put a value on this training. We're also taught how to "not become a 2nd victim" during the rescue. I too cringed at many things that were done - but ultimately everyone got out safe. I hope each of them will sign up soon for a SWR class somewhere. It's NOT classroom training, it's in the river training.
I am a new kayaker and have not had opportunity to take swift water rescue. I have just tried to stay out of the way and stable. I don't want to add to problems due to lack of Experience. I am going with well trained people and looking for rescue clinic.
But it was not the biggest mistake to having no rope with him. They haven't discussed about signs and how to paddle a river. The first guy saw the log and only points with the finger. This is very hard to see. There need to be a sharp whistle and a horizontal paddle, or whatever the sign was. But this log was clearly a very dangerous obstacle. And even worse, the group didnt even managed to warn the last guy who was at the end much closer to die than the second. If you had clear signs and were able to warn the group, no rope would have been necessary. At least in this case.
The second guy dropped in, and got pinned, waay after the first guy got stuck in the hole. A full THIRTY SECONDS. A single whoop and vague hand wiggle is just awful... Lucky.
Tom Doll a "pro level paddler" doesn't have a rope or knife on a creeking run with terrible hand signals and even if the "selfie" was him checking if his GoPro was on that is just not something you do in a rescue situation.
Kit Lee 90% of the time if the people that need saving let go they will float down and be fine. the problem is when people panic. I've survived 6 minutes in a hell hole beside a boulder that was 9 feet. I had plenty of air flipping back up and only using enough force to go for air. the problem is even if you train people how to escape and how to paddle if they freeze or get scared there screwed. It puts more then one person at risk. Why do you think they picked Africa for no law safaris. People letting lions and cheetah in the car and expecting it to play nice with there baby.......
Always interesting how getting an individual on the scene is what really works. Brings back shades of being stuffed between a log and an undercut below Moats. The ropes helped me keep head above water, but it took a fellow boater to pull me out . . . nearly 17 years ago. RiverRun: Adventures on the Edge of Enlightenment (chapter 9).
I'm sure someone mentioned this, but the mechanics of that situation required the boat to be pulled upstream and tov river right. Or at least upstream on the left. That likely would have released the skirt without having to cut it. It seemed the swimmer was safe minus the skirt pin... just my outside perspective.

Those branches in that waterfall are a DEATH TRAP!!!! Just went through this today, but what we went through was nothing in comparison to how strong this current was, and what we experienced was terrifying, so I couldn't even imagine how scary this was for that guy. When there's dangers like this in known areas where people do kayaking, canoeing, or rafting, someone should take the liberty to either put some kind of post there with a danger sign or something. That would let people know to steer clear of it. Wonder how many people got caught on that before and after these people who weren't wearing a go pro.
Pretty uneffecient, considering how many people there were (in theory, that is) available to help, and how long it took them to get their fellow kayaker out of the water. Apparently no-one was *really* in control of the rescue operation, and precious time was lost when trying to decide whether to save the man or the kayak! Piece of advice: get the human out of the water first before he gets tired. And before the rescuers get tired, too. Amateur rescuers like this don´t usually recognise their own limits. Luckily no-one drowned or injured themself badly, but this situation could easily have turned into fatality. So put the goddam kayak in the third place after the humans: you can always buy a new one after you´ve out of the tough situation alive. Always make sure to get *all* the people out of water first, since energy, muscle strength and body warmth can be lost quickly under these conditions. Especially if you´re just a bunch of amateurs, like this lot seems to be.

This paddler was very fortunate to have survived. Glad we got to learn from watching but it would have been excessively difficult not to kick the camera guy in the nuts and throw him in the river had I been the one in peril. Before I progress onto water and rivers of this difficulty I will most certainly take a swift water rescue course and obtain all the proper rescue and safety gear.

All us ocean kayakers carry vhs radios for communication...interesting that rapid fresh water kayakers seem not to carry open channel waterproof radios for comms. Is there a reason for this? Close enough so yelling works? Too many obstacles for the radios signals to get through? To the inexperienced it seems like radios might work well to point out dangers to boaters upstream but I havent seen this done by rapid fresh water kayakers. I guess the use of radios is impractical for some reason I probably dont understand...could someone enlighten me?

The first person over did some incredibly weak finger signals to warn the others. Even if they'd been right next to them they wouldnt have seen them. Thats were it started going wrong ?
God damn, this is an incredibly serious lesson in knowing who you paddle with. Why are you asking other people where a rope is, then the knife, then getting in the middle of the rescue when you clearly have zero clue what to do? That is YOUR responsibility on a trip, zero exceptions. I won't paddle with anybody who puts in without basic safety equipment and the knowledge to use it. Not because it will save them, but because it will save me. This kid is a disaster waiting to happen.
He's also a world champion freestyle kayaker and one of the top whitewater boaters in the world. Difficult situations happen everyone was fine just a technical thing to dislodge the boat from🤷
You should definitely take up kayaking but I'm sure by the time you got into whitewater of technicality you would have learnt basic safety and be able to help in a situation like this. This isn't a beginners rapid so don't let stuff like this scare you off🤙🤙
Take it up, it will take you to some awesome places. If you find yourself in a group with people that don't carry basic safety equip like a freeking throw rope find another group.
I’m not defending the guy but can I just say, the guy filming was not taking a selfie, he was checking if his go pro was recording by the flashing red light on front of the camera, ( no less disgraceful) if my mate was nearly drowning I would not be worried about footage but I don’t believe he was stopping for a selfie
I’m not a rescue expert but is there a solid reason why I tend to see people in these kayak rescue videos grabbing hands instead of wrists? It seems like You miss out on a lot of leverage this way.
he clearly said that his skirt was snagged. the spray-skirt is a snug fitting garment that keeps water out of the boat. when worn in conjunction with a dry-top (as all were wearing), the skirt is pulled over a so-called tunnel layer worn against the body and is sandwiched between an outer layer of tight fitting neoprene to create a three layered water seal. most likely a branch on the log caught and snagged the skirt. removing the skirt and dry-top is something of a chore on land but when you're submerged in a strong current is nearly impossible
Get a Whistle!!! Lots of good comments here about what could have been done better. I had to re-watch the first couple minutes to make sure I was really seeing what I thought I saw. Nothing but a little “yip” and a hand wave to try and alert fellow boaters!! A STRONG whistle blast and clear direction with paddle could have prevented all of this! Maybe I missed it, but I never heard any of this crew blow a whistle, so even LAST boater proceeds unaware, and becomes the main rescue. Just ridiculous. Get a whistle, and learn how to communicate. 😤😳😖😡😱🤯😵😪
I'm amazed the guys behind him didn't see his signals, they weren't even watching for them! Basic self-preservation skill is keeping an eddy between you and the boat in front of you and watching for signals every time they land a drop. That way the leader can pass along better lines to those behind him. That guy pins slightly but 4 more boats come down without realizing the safe line is right? When the 5th guy goes through at the worst spot and pins badly the leader is out of position - likely expected others to do the rescue. Props to him for grabbing a rope and getting back to the other side to assist.
Plenty of criticism goin on here in the comments and some of it well founded. I guess it's somewhat the nature of adventure sports enthusiasts to push their luck sometimes. Such is the meaning of adventure... If you come out of situations like this relatively intact, then you are going to be a wiser person... hopefully... and it certainly counts as experience. Risk can't be removed from this sort of activity but your calculus of it can be developed. If you're doing rivers like this it would be prudent for eveyone to have some level of swift water rescue training and at the very minimum for everyone to at least be carrying a trow bag. Hopefully there was no one so traumatised by this to chuck it all in. You're all still alive fellas!
"Do you have a rope?" That's like asking the guy that you just jumped out of a plane with, "Hey, do you have a parachute?" If you don't, well...that's just not good.
Jesus the abuse these guys are receiving, they got the 2 guys out, safe and dry. Yes lessons learnt but who hasnt balls up before. Preparation in future you can be sure will be better.
Party training like that is only a good idea if you've done the river before (recently!) And know where the hazards are, and have made people aware of them. This is very bad water safety, but I'm glad everyone managed to get out okay in the end. Certainly would've saved someone money in buying a new spraydeck though. There are plenty of Eddie's before the drop. You could have easily gotten out and scouted. That would have been the right, sensible thing to do.
er; isn't that a piece of driftwood from a large tree? Massive Log strainer stuck in after a drop, really nasty. Could of happened at anytime... Not like it was a permanent tree, rocks or some other river artifact that was always there in high water conditions. They have gotten me a couple times; scouted; everything was fine; knew river from dozens of runs and slam. Snagged skirt; now that really sucks...
I used to paddle a REALLY tiny squirt bits. I honestly f]don’t know how I could have gotten into anything more radical. All there was in that boat was me AND A FUCKING THROW BAG. Unless you’re the stretchy gurl from Fab Four your arms are too short.

Everyone has a rope right? Isnt that just simple? You all have a rope always no matter the class. I am more of a skier, I do kayak, but if in an avalanche situation someone yelled at me do you have a beacon I would want to punch him. edit: before any skier reminds me we do a battery check before going into the backcountry sure we do, maybe I will have to do that with my whitewater friends in the future, or juts try to make sure they are no morons.
Great team work, the only thing missing from the message at the end was regularly practice for the worst case scenario. DKV, BCU, ACA or any other organisation preach training swiftwater rescue techniques. Good drills folks.
It seems to me the last one needing rescuing was more concerned with his kayak than actually being pulled/pivoted ashore. As noted by many all should have a rope. Otherwise good teamwork.
It can be impossible to hear anything on the river, so signals like pointing are helpful if people are paying attention. One common concept is the idea of 'pointing positive', in which you point where you want to go but never towards danger. That being said, a whistle would have definitely helped in this situation.
He completely ignored the guy pointing did what HE wanted got HIMSELF stuck and then needed the guys help who he completely blew off and ignored. How ironic.
$3k in kayak gear and no throw rope? Throw ropes are mandatory in my opinion and won't paddle with anyone who doesn't have one.

I'm a kayak fisherman, not whitewater at all, and I always have a rope in my hatch and a knife on my PFD.
So what, he's a young kid. He was heroic and helped save the guy's life.

EVERYONE doing whitewater should have a throw bag in their boat or on their person and it be readily available.
The first person over did some incredibly weak finger signals to warn the others. Even if they'd been right next to them they wouldnt have seen them. Thats were it started going wrong ?
God damn, this is an incredibly serious lesson in knowing who you paddle with. Why are you asking other people where a rope is, then the knife, then getting in the middle of the rescue when you clearly have zero clue what to do? That is YOUR responsibility on a trip, zero exceptions. I won't paddle with anybody who puts in without basic safety equipment and the knowledge to use it. Not because it will save them, but because it will save me.
This kid is a disaster waiting to happen.
He's also a world champion freestyle kayaker and one of the top whitewater boaters in the world. Difficult situations happen everyone was fine just a technical thing to dislodge the boat from🤷

You should definitely take up kayaking but I'm sure by the time you got into whitewater of technicality you would have learnt basic safety and be able to help in a situation like this. This isn't a beginners rapid so don't let stuff like this scare you off🤙🤙
Take it up, it will take you to some awesome places. If you find yourself in a group with people that don't carry basic safety equip like a freeking throw rope find another group.
I’m not defending the guy but can I just say, the guy filming was not taking a selfie, he was checking if his go pro was recording by the flashing red light on front of the camera, ( no less disgraceful) if my mate was nearly drowning I would not be worried about footage but I don’t believe he was stopping for a selfie

I’m not a rescue expert but is there a solid reason why I tend to see people in these kayak rescue videos grabbing hands instead of wrists? It seems like You miss out on a lot of leverage this way.

What is preventing the boater from getting out of the kayak when they're pulling on him?
he clearly said that his skirt was snagged. the spray-skirt is a snug fitting garment that keeps water out of the boat. when worn in conjunction with a dry-top (as all were wearing), the skirt is pulled over a so-called tunnel layer worn against the body and is sandwiched between an outer layer of tight fitting neoprene to create a three layered water seal. most likely a branch on the log caught and snagged the skirt. removing the skirt and dry-top is something of a chore on land but when you're submerged in a strong current is nearly impossible
Get a Whistle!!! Lots of good comments here about what could have been done better. I had to re-watch the first couple minutes to make sure I was really seeing what I thought I saw. Nothing but a little “yip” and a hand wave to try and alert fellow boaters!! A STRONG whistle blast and clear direction with paddle could have prevented all of this!
Maybe I missed it, but I never heard any of this crew blow a whistle, so even LAST boater proceeds unaware, and becomes the main rescue. Just ridiculous. Get a whistle, and learn how to communicate.

I'm amazed the guys behind him didn't see his signals, they weren't even watching for them! Basic self-preservation skill is keeping an eddy between you and the boat in front of you and watching for signals every time they land a drop. That way the leader can pass along better lines to those behind him. That guy pins slightly but 4 more boats come down without realizing the safe line is right? When the 5th guy goes through at the worst spot and pins badly the leader is out of position - likely expected others to do the rescue. Props to him for grabbing a rope and getting back to the other side to assist.

Plenty of criticism goin on here in the comments and some of it well founded. I guess it's somewhat the nature of adventure sports enthusiasts to push their luck sometimes. Such is the meaning of adventure... If you come out of situations like this relatively intact, then you are going to be a wiser person... hopefully... and it certainly counts as experience. Risk can't be removed from this sort of activity but your calculus of it can be developed. If you're doing rivers like this it would be prudent for eveyone to have some level of swift water rescue training and at the very minimum for everyone to at least be carrying a trow bag. Hopefully there was no one so traumatised by this to chuck it all in. You're all still alive fellas!

Party training like that is only a good idea if you've done the river before (recently!) And know where the hazards are, and have made people aware of them. This is very bad water safety, but I'm glad everyone managed to get out okay in the end. Certainly would've saved someone money in buying a new spraydeck though.
There are plenty of Eddie's before the drop. You could have easily gotten out and scouted. That would have been the right, sensible thing to do.

Massive Log strainer stuck in after a drop, really nasty. Could of happened at anytime... Not like it was a permanent tree, rocks or some other river artifact that was always there in high water conditions.
They have gotten me a couple times; scouted; everything was fine; knew river from dozens of runs and slam.
Snagged skirt; now that really sucks...
You can sew the hole cut in the skirt and then put a patch on it to waterproof it.

I used to paddle a REALLY tiny squirt bits. I honestly f]don’t know how I could have gotten into anything more radical. All there was in that boat was me AND A FUCKING THROW BAG. Unless you’re the stretchy gurl from Fab Four your arms are too short.

Everyone has a rope right? Isnt that just simple? You all have a rope always no matter the class. I am more of a skier, I do kayak, but if in an avalanche situation someone yelled at me do you have a beacon I would want to punch him.
edit: before any skier reminds me we do a battery check before going into the backcountry sure we do, maybe I will have to do that with my whitewater friends in the future, or juts try to make sure they are no morons.

Great team work, the only thing missing from the message at the end was regularly practice for the worst case scenario. DKV, BCU, ACA or any other organisation preach training swiftwater rescue techniques. Good drills folks.

It seems to me the last one needing rescuing was more concerned with his kayak than actually being pulled/pivoted ashore. As noted by many all should have a rope. Otherwise good teamwork.

It can be impossible to hear anything on the river, so signals like pointing are helpful if people are paying attention. One common concept is the idea of 'pointing positive', in which you point where you want to go but never towards danger. That being said, a whistle would have definitely helped in this situation.
