A Tactical Breakdown of How I Won the FM Streamer Showdown

  • It took over a year for me to make it back to the Football Manager mountain top and it took the introduction of a new game, FM22, for me to get there. A few days ago we released the ‘complete experience’ of the showdown win, but I wanted to try something a little different a week on from my FM Streamer Showdown title. I wanted to sit down and tactically break down how he managed to skate through each round of the tournament and find victory at long last.
    This essentially turned into a tactic guide for FM22. Now playing against people is always different than playing against the AI, but the art of countering opponent's tactics while sticking to your tactical style of play. I felt confident going in, based on my performance late in the first showdown on FM22, but we proved that my tactical style can adapt to any opponent this time around so I’m happy to share it.
    Much Love,
    FM Senpai

    I love the fact that in FM22 narrow tactics work as a treat. Also saves on squad building plans (as you only pick 18 players in Streamer Showdowns, not to mention the 7-sub bench you have in most leagues) and is flexible enough to block most tactics from working, which Zealand implicitly shows in this video.

    So wanted to get peoples thoughts, I stumbled across this accidentally when starting a game.
    When starting a game u can choose when the game starts and I decided to look at what was the earliest start date available which turned out to be Brazilian league early on like 7/12/20, chose that but managing in England i thought does that mean u get to play out the end of the 20/21 season etc.
    Long story short no official games but does come with some benefits as follows.....
    1. U can train your tactics, individual training for 6 months prior to actually starting season proper
    2. Can do friendlies to get games for your players
    3. Get the January 2021 transfer window
    3.1 players that may be 19 at normal start time might be 18 at this window so you can bring them in early enough to get them home grown, also takes them 6 months less time to be home grown.
    3.2 can start getting rid of players you don't want earlier
    4. You get an extra youth intake prior to actual start of game, so can scout and have regens/newgens come in 2021 winter transfer.
    5. Having do one where I bought players in January and also just left the transfer budget as was not buying or selling got an increase in transfer budget for winter transfer window. In first one transfer budget was around £40m spent £86m sold around £45m in January got to winter transfer window (between seasons) and transfer budget was £85m. In one I didn't touch any transfers in January was £39m and then £65m in winter transfer.
    Cant see any negatives apart from possibly one could argue cheating.
    So what do you think cheating or good hack or not interesting at all, also I haven't looked but imagine it would be the same for most leagues in Europe as well.

    • @p4sk4l
      @p4sk4l 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      That’s actually interesting, I think everyone would agree that it’s unrealistic, but the main focus of playing the game should still be having fun and having an earlier youth intake or potentially seeing some regen players play in the first season could be fun

    • @phil08838
      @phil08838 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I usually do the opposite and select Sweden, and start in April 2022 to simulate the first season so there's new transfer budgets, new clubs in europa and most importantly players not saying they dont want to move clubs because they just arrived :)))
      The only downside is there isnt any regens the first season then, you have to be playing when u get your youth intake report in november/december or else there isnt any regens until next season, besides the clubs that start their season in the winter. But i have never tried this so maybe i will do next save, its very interesting

    I don't struggle with many tactics other than through balls out wide into the box while I have a back 3. Pisses me off🤣🤣🤣 I've been thinking about picking "stay wider" but I think that may bring too much trouble. Or maybe my tactics are ok and my cwb are just shit 🤣
    I usually use a back 3 with 3 wingback in my first year or at least until January. I only struggle against one team in this league (Hamilton). But they are the run away league leaders and my team (Queen of The South) are 2nd with the best goal scoring record (sometimes second) and between the 1st and 3rd best defence. It's January and I've improved the squad with a few players (new cwb) so hopefully we get our revenge on Hamilton 🤣

    • @michaelwain58
      @michaelwain58 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was having a similar issue. I've found that playing your most agile centre back as a Libero on support in the middle of the three helps cut out the through balls. Also, using your wing backs as Inverted Wing Backs tends to narrow the angle, especially if you have a DM playing too. It forces teams out wide. I face more crosses now, but I have three centre backs to deal with them.
      Sounds like you have it sussed anyway. Best of luck 👍

      Fullbacks don’t run to the byline as much but still offer a lot of support worth and look to cross more. If we had them on wingbacks they would be drawn out of position way more. He likes fullbacks on attack same thing he does with floridsdorfer

    12:16 "One of the most important skills you can have is assessing whether you actually deserved to win a game or not" - as he decides (for the 2nd time at that point in the video) despite having ZERO shots on target (in both games combined) and roughly HALF the xG (as well as trailing on possession) that his team are winning 🤦‍♂️

    • @ralfkleine4076
      @ralfkleine4076 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Now hold your horses! In the game against Tom he scored from a set piece and a penalty, which also inflates the xG. Furthermore Zealand has 4 blocked shots, which could be anything really, from a shot blocked on the goalline to a shot going yards wide. The point is: you can‘t judge a game only based on stats. You also need to consider what kind of shot you / your opponent have. If someone gets lucky with set pieces you yould still be in control of the game.

    • @thegingerator7886
      @thegingerator7886 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      This is exactly the point he is making tho - you are just bad at assessing the impact of the tactic. Shots on target is influenced by the quality of your players an their mental state, so it doesnt matter for tactics. Possession also doesnt matter as long as thats not something you specifically want to achieve. As for xgoal, 0,77 of that is the penalty and about 0.4 is the freekick, so that leaves abou 0.2 xgoal for 6 shots from open play - basically non-chances. Compare that to Zs 0.8 xgoal and one clear cut chance to none from open play and its pretty clear he was doing great and the tactic was working!

    • @MrRokkit
      @MrRokkit 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thegingerator7886 , yeah, possibly. I was probably being a little harsh since he said the same thing at 5:55 and didn't have a single stat in his favour. That said, who's to say that that 0.4 of Zealand's didn't come from a set piece that DIDN'T result in a goal....
      I think a few tweaks to the shot map could do a far better job of telling the story of the game. E.g.
      - Checkbox that adjusts the size/shade of the shot symbol based on the xG
      - Checkbox that adds lines for the previous pass + dribble to the shot map
