I was a recording engineer back in the 70's and there was 2nd engineer (some would say assistant), recording engineer, and mastering engineer. Recording engineers tracked and mixed because they would track focused on getting a good track they could do what they wanted when they mixed. Mastering back then was all about vinyl and master for vinyl is an art unto itself. Very interesting seeing how the roles in recording in 2024 has changed.

The reason UAD connects hardware to their plugins is so the plugins don't draw from your CPU it draws power directly from the interface. It' s the best system I've ever used and their plugins are by far the best I've used as far as hardware emulation.

Love this show. FYI in regards to the Diamond are forever song . It was originally recorded by Nancy Wilson (RIP). It's a classic jazz song. It was clever to get an engineer with classic production skills to mix and master KW album.

Keep UAD for the emulations alone especially the preamps and compressor, and limiters.
Keep Waves for good CPU usage and variety.
Keep Izotope for the quality, and user friendliness having everything in one place is nice with the Ozone and Nectar stuff.
Drop Slate because UAD has the better emulations imo, you can’t buy a lot of their plugins separately, subscription based, some of their plugins are heavy on CPU, there’s more things but out of all I’ve tried Slate has been the stuff I go to the least.

Doh I love my Hip-Hop and Rap, EDM gave me the most techniques and overall no boundaries for anything, so a lot you can do or combine, which leads to new things to solve and learn from !
Just so many different subgenres, there’s a use for everything somehow.

Regarding Craig Bauer, I was at Hinge when we were working on those records. CB is actually a well rounded mix/recording engineer working on multiple genres. Everything from Hip Hop, R&B, Jazz, to Gospel. He KILLS at them all.

I'm telling you from experience ever since I bought an Apollo interface and got access and started using their plugins is some of the most top quality but expensive stuff but they do half-off sales around the holiday times that's the best time to buy and then you own it no yearly fee nothing you own it and the spark plug ins if you have an Apollo unit when you buy a plug-in they give you the DSP version and then they give you the spark version also

Out of all the genres I listen to I’d say metal, hands down. They gotta deal with editing insane drum parts, getting the bass guitar low end to gel with the kick, getting bass guitar high end to gel with guitars, screaming vocals, clean vocals, cinematic productions, etc.
Some metal songs have a LOT going on and you need a good mix engineer to make it cohesive, aggressive, and listenable at the same time.

A year ago I had no idea how to mic a drum kit but it shouldn't be as intimidating as we say. If you have a basic understanding of microphones polar patterns and their response to a sound that's all you really need and you can get a great sound! I encourage everybody to look into live drum recordings it really is worth it. Podcast fire though, keep going.

The answer to the title of this podcast is modern symphonic and cinematic music. Imagine mixing a Zimmer cue. At least 50 mic channels and then something like an EDM track on top of that. But, that’s not “hobby” type work. That’s professional stuff.

Plugin Alliance can replace Fabfilter and Slate.. Plugin Alliance got Lisa(Analog Mutiband) and Kirchoff(Replace FF (Pro Q)). And if you dont use analog for recording.. UAD Twin Apollo is must have for console tracking. And Luna is best DAW for recording with analog sound. You can analog summing all your tracks.. what other daw can do that?

I can't lie I a/b compared Slate Digital & Waves plugins & Slate took it for me simply because I did a test where I put a compressor/eq plugin on my vocal but didn't change any settings & the waves plugins were affecting the sound of my vocal where as Slate plugins didn't.

To all my newbies yes, have a reference track but the must important thing is to train/develop your ear by listening to "good" music. You can have a ref track all you want but if you don't know what you're listening to then what's the point🤔 Watch shows like this and listen to great classic music. Blessings

I am a UAD user but mainly love them for their 0 latency recording. I don't use their emulated preamps as much because I use my own (Avalon 737, Art Pros, Tonebeast 12, etc). I also don't like commuting to vocal chains cuz I rather do that on the mixing end. Their plugins are expensive as hell and I can't justify paying for their versions of emulated compressors, eq, etc. Also, DSP becomes a issue after loading up a bunch of UAD plugins but I believe they did something to integrate them as NATIVE. Love waves, fabfilter & slate they're always my go to plugins for any scenario.
As far as what genre breeds the best mixers.. That's a loaded question lol. I'd def give the edge to Rock & EDM-DUB IMO. Takes a lot of skill to make everything sit in a mix while handing out loads of Low Mid & Low End Freq.
This channel is dope. Love the fact that you guys pick each others brains about audiophile ish. Wish I had a friend or partner to kick the shit with. You guys are based out of NY?
