    This looks like a good first project when you’re just starting soldering!
    I would have appreciated seeing you remove the old solder/posts from those holes.

    My favorite repair /mod for a system. It is fast and easy and those battery holders are such a perfect fit. I have never had a problem desoldering the battery on the DC. I have done it to 5 machines so far my self .One of witch had a dead battery the other's it was just such a simple job I did it as a preemptive. Great video and thank you for emphasizing use a RECHARGEABLE battery.

    Just FYI... maybe these were not available until recently but Maxwell ML2032 is a rechargable 3.0v battery and is possibly a better suited replacement. What do you think??

PLUS... the background NFS III (or high stakes not sure) menu music... haha you brought back so many teenager memories!! I used to love just staying in the manu to listen to the music

    Very cool, thanks wheelman. I wish it was as easy as my Sega Saturn, just remove back piece and pop in your new CR2032... but still not bad at all. Quick question, what is that little monitor you have, I see lots of engineers/developers have one on their work station so they dont have to pull consoles, etc back to the big TV or monitor which is always in other rooms in the house to test basic things out. I'd like to get one for my working/soldering area.

    • @thewheelman282

      its the cheapest piece of junk i could find at my local thrift store. its just a car DVD player that has AV inputs

    • @zdp-189
      @zdp-189 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice, never thought to try them outside of consoles in cars, should check my local Goodwill. One more tyro question wheelman, I never used flux the few times I soldered head units/gameboy screens/ or my guitar pickups. Is applying that flux before always give the best possible solder? I never knew about it, should order that on Amazon also with the battery and holder?

    • @thewheelman282
      @thewheelman282  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      its necessary in some situations. mostly when you need to solder large/thick joints, the existing joint is corroded, or the solder otherwise wont flow into the joint very well. usually solder wire has a flux core which saves you from having to apply flux manually all the time, but having a container of flux on hand is a good idea

    I'm collecting alot of my childhood consoles and games,but I'm on a generation kick now and I'm trying to complete my 6th gen with the addition of the Dreamcast,now I know chances are I will have to change the battery,and I solder at work but it's on pipe as I am a plumber,but for a newbie to soldering on consoles what's the chances of messing up that board the battery tray is connected to? What flux and solder should I use? I take consoles apart a thoroughly clean them but I've never had to solder one,lucked up and got a v.1.6 Xbox so I don't have to change capacitor on it. Any help or suggestions would be nice.

    With the new holder, will I no longer need to solder every time the battery dies, and simply change batteries?

  • @blakespower
    @blakespower 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    why did they make it so complicated? Sega Saturn was easy to change, just opened the back compartment and popped out the bad battery and put in a new one. but that also had battery for the internal memory and the clock

  • @mikevga_cr

    Great tutorial man, I went through this entire process yesterday but now i got a few new issues. The boot animation is gone, fan is always on (can't recall if it was always like that) and my backup games don't last more than 30 seconds and then it kicks me out of the game back to the menu ( I noticed boot up animation does appear after the backup game loads). Official games work just fine. Any idea what could it be? The only difference with what you did is that I didn't leave on for 3 hours, not sure if that makes any difference.

    • @thewheelman282
      @thewheelman282  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Michael Vega Fan staying on is normal. if backup kick you back to dashboard, then the dreamcast is probably having a hard time reading the disc or the lid switch is acting goofy. the boot animation wont play on startup if the date/time is not set so you may have to let the battery charge for a few hours first

    • @mikevga_cr
      @mikevga_cr 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      thewheelman282
      First of all, thanks for the tips! I'm glad about the fan as I totally forgot it was always on. Weird thing is reading the official games just fine. I came from work and turn it on, left it on for around 3.5 hours, then turn it off for almost 2 and the animation worked again. Tried the backup and now is not even detecting it so I turn it off and again the boot up animation was gone again. Date/time are correct so I'm not sure what's going on now. Any advise?

    • @thewheelman282
      @thewheelman282  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      if i remember correctly, if you turn it on with the lid open, the animation doesnt play, but i could be mistaken. if its not reading your backups then its probably time to clean the drive assembly. start with cleaning the lens assembly from hair and dust. gently wipe the lens with 91% alcohol and a cotton swap. if you have to, you can use compressed air to VERY GENTLY blow dust out from underneath the lens where the laser shines. you have to be extremely careful doing that though

    • @mikevga_cr

      I´ll go through the process and see if I can get the issues fixed. I´ll comment back the results. Thanks!

    battery heatsink? so it gets hot?

    • @brandongarretson9475
      @brandongarretson9475 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. He is saying that if you try to de-solder the original battery, it would take too long and too much heat to melt the solder. So its best to just clip the old battery off, then de-solder whats left of the pins.

    • @Sillyzombie666
      @Sillyzombie666 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah you could but putting this one should last you a few years 5 or more without issue and if it died just buy a new one

    • @frankynakamoto2308
      @frankynakamoto2308 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sillyzombie666 is there any batteries that could be placed and last for much longer, if so which battery? and could someone make a video on jow to mod it.
      They also need to make a video for the Saturn on how to mod a better longer lasting battery in it.

    • @Sillyzombie666
      @Sillyzombie666 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      you dont want a battery in for more than a few years because they tend to fail and leak inside. also the Saturn battery is not rechargeable, its not like you loose save info or any thing just the date and time.dude a few years is more than enough. by trying to change the battery and its capacity you could risk ruining your system.
