Thank You. I just bought one from an estate sale for $5.00 because she said it didn't work. I know there had to be a cheap fix. I tore it apart and tested that resistor and it is dead. Thanks again.
you prolly dont give a shit but if you guys are bored like me during the covid times then you can watch all of the latest series on InstaFlixxer. Have been watching with my brother for the last few months xD
When you put the top part of the case on, always put it on with the LID OPEN, then close the lid once you have it attached. If you put it on with the lid closed it crushes the switch at a weird angle, potentially damaging it. This is probably what was causing your problem when you put the top part back on the first time.
The Dreamcast clock battery is an ML2430-VS1, which is a rechargeable lithium battery. They're about $4-5 bucks and not hard to find at all. It'll last about 5 years before needing to be replaced. You can also mod in your own terminal and insert any kind of rechargeable battery that you desire, but it probably won't save you any time or money, really.
I've learned a great deal about batteries. To test if that battery is any good, just set your multimeter to DC V (voltage; for my meter, I have to set mine to DC 20V) and touch either lead to one side and the other (negative results tell you the leads are backward but don't matter). The closer the Voltage is to 0, the less time you have on that battery until it's dead. I believe those coin batteries should be about 1.5V when fully charged.
Andrew Fillhart correct. This battery flickered between 0 and 1v, but I didn't show it in the video. It's dead, but I don't have a replacement on the special mount the DC uses. Maybe I'll order a few and make a video on how to swap them
I've been plugging and unplugging my controllers for 21 years and the ports still work just fine. Ebay has a Dreamcast Controller port kit that has a reset-able fuse, resister (the tan one), Capacitor, battery holder that supports a removable battery and a ML2032 battery for 11 bucks (8.99 plus 2 shipping). My battery has lasted 21 years and still holds a charge as long as I power on my Dreamcast every 1 or 2 weeks and leave it on for a few hours, minor inconvenience compared to buying expensive rechargeable button cell battery and a battery holder that allows you to replace the battery without having to de soldering it. The best battery mod is the one that disables the charging circuit and allows the use of a standard CR2032 battery like the Saturn uses.
Clean the Laser with alcohol and then tweak the potentiometer on the the GD- Rom Laser clockwise (while the laser is upside down) i done this yesterday on a non working dreamcast and now it is working fine.
The issue with the original game disc is not coming from your disc, it is a common problem the Dreamcast gets sometimes. There are tutorials on TH-cam how to fix it, but it involves taking the entire system apart and some more soldering. :-]
I'm currently repairing a VA0 system and the only game included included was disneyworld racing. The game couldnt read but I tried a music cd and it reads just fine. So I'm gonna try and see if the game drive being greased up a bit would help read games quicker
Amazing video super helpful! Have you ever encountered a Dreamcast that has no audio? Been wracking my brain for 2 weeks trying to figure out what’s going on. I’m close to just replacing the Dac chip. Any advice is much appreciated 🙏
Hello. I have a problem with my Dreamcast. It shuts down when i close the lid with disc inside. If there is no disc its working showing menu but when i insert disc ans close the lid it shuts down and it does not turn on for couple minutes
Was that Dreamcast modded to play backup games? I've done the MM3 mod to a variety of PS1s and I just got in the XENO GC chip for the GameCube (so much easier to attach than the MM3).
Andrew Fillhart most dreamcasts support backups out of the box. On the back label, where it says NTSC US, there's a number in a circle indicating the revision. 0 and 1 support backups, while 2 does not.
📣 I HAVE TO HAVE MY 1P CONTROLLER ALMOST PLUGGED ALL THE WAY IN AND WEDGE A PIECE OF PAPER SHOEHORN STYLE TO GET MY CONTROLLER TO WORK... WORKS FINE WHEN I DO THAT... COULD THAT BE THE SAME PROBLEM?
hello, can you help me please ... I burned the resistance of the control panel, but on aliexpress there are 10K, 10M, 10R .... do you know what it has to be? I speak Spanish, I hope you understand.
I have literally had to replace my dreamcast 5 times in my life time thus far because of that fucking controller board, at least now I'm aware of how to fix it. Wish I would have known when I was younger!! >:/
so true, I went through several before finding yours. just got a Dreamcast on Ebay for $20.00 because of this problem and I knew it had to be a fix out there. Some of the videos suggested that you twist the resistor so the resistor leads touch bridging the connection.. Nope...not doing that. Thanks again!
jeepnII something clearly caused the component to fail, twisting it removes the protection and could cause further problems if something else were to happen to it
Hey, RetroRepairs. Thanks for the video! I have this exact same problem with the controller ports. I think I need to replace both resistors. I don't understand much about resistors, so I don't know exactly which ones to buy. Could you give me the characteristics of both resistors (blue and brown)? Thanks :)
I have a Dreamcast and while the controller ports do work (I've only tested port A so far), when I tug on the controller (by accident) it disconnects then reconnects, despite still being connected. This causes the game to pause against my will. Port A does look a bit dirty. My guesses are that either: - the resistor in my ports is starting to fail - port A just needs a clean - there's something wrong with my controller Anyone else experiencing this?
adultmoshifan87 I've never experienced that, but I would think A. Controller cable isn't connected well to the plug B. Controller port is dirty C. Bad solder joint where the port connects to the board. Do you have another Controller to test it with?
I bought a super Nintendo entertainment system off eBay it cost me $47.00 its a launch day console it grey and has no yellowing or cracks it works fine
currently I do not sell my refurbs online. Local sales only for the time being. I've done limited work on a ps3. I had an xbox 360 when they came out, so I actually just got my first ps3 two years ago, which had a yellow light of death. Managed to fix that and I use it frequently
I use Digikey alot for ordering components. Price is good, and I can get $8 two-day shipping to Canada. Hard to top that. I'd like to support a local electronics shop, but here they don't carry any really small components like you'd use on a PCB like this. Mainly just TV caps, stuff like that.
dogeiplier The dog true. So did the Sega genesis and even the game boy. However, the dreamcast was one of the first to be commercially available to anyone with a built in modem.
Great video, I just received a Dreamcast from a seller on eBay and the unit has the same issue. I will be ordering a few of the 1/4 w 10-ohm resistors and giving this repair a go! I have found that some people say that the 10-ohm resistor is a bad way to repair the console. Instead, individuals say that 0.5 amp pico fuse or a resettable fuse is a better option. Which do you suggest? How long will the resistor modification work for? Would this work for the repair? www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/576-0251.500MXL Thanks! Keep the content coming!
You may have difficulty finding that fusible resistor, but that is what was originally used. That concern does have merit, as removing the fuse potentially removes protection against whatever caused it to fail in the first place
@@RetroRepairs we have success! Thanks to your video, my Dreamcast is operational again!! I ended up going with a set-up that provides the battery replacement and a resettable fuse. Good old dreamcast; reads burned bootlegs easier than the actual original games haha.
The same happens to my DC, Do you know why? And Should I just keep using the backups?
Not True, Ive had many Burned CDs that would not load and had to re-burn a new one.

Sega were awesome innovators , how they lost the console war with Nintendo I will never understand.

Wonder how many amps that fuse is rated for tho...
Have you thought about refurbishing an N-Gage?
No, but I haven't found one either.. If I found one at the right price I'd give it a go.
RetroRepairs Ok. Have you ever owned a N-Gage or N-Gage QD? I own about 10.
KA HE I've never actually seen one in person, just online. Definitely an.... Interesting device.
Who's jersey in the tv background?
AJ Green that's a Vikings Harrison Smith signed jersey

The disc is crack around the edge
Can I Connect the Dreamcast with a HDMI cable? Sorry I’m silly guy....
No, there's no HDMI on the dreamcast
@@RetroRepairs ok, I’m not so silly man, but can I use an adapter, maybe an HDMI/RCA adapter? Thanks a lot cheers
The are converters that reprocess the signal into hdmi, but good ones aren't cheap. Cheap ones introduce lag. I dont have any recommendations though.
@@RetroRepairs thanks a lot for your time man. An italian friend!
No problem! Cheers!
Hey what cds do you use please tell me please
For burning copies? You need CD-R (not cd-rw). As for brand, just whatever I can find. I think I've got a mix of memorex and verbatim
