    I am also in San Diego and would like to connect to you some day.
    Actually after my PhD from Rutgers in 2015 I also moved here but couldn’t get into postdoctoral program as I needed to support my family due to high standards of living in CA.
    Now I am unemployed due to COVID and also looking for full time scientific writing.
    I saw your video found really helpful, please make some content on volunteering or entry level medical writing jobs. Thanks JSR

    Did your employers ever give you any on the job training with medical writing or did you learn more about medical writing from the projects you worked on?

    • @TheBoldPhD
      @TheBoldPhD  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've learned from both areas. I learned the basics of SEO, writing blog content, and social media content on my own. I've learned how to write more technical documents like white papers and application notes in my current role. And then, of course, I came in with a Ph.D. and a degree in nursing; so a lot of science and healthcare in my educational background. Most companies DO want you to come in with some kind of writing training or expertise. It's easier to "add on" more training than to train from scratch. But different companies operate differently so I cannot definitively say a company will not train somebody from scratch.

    I love watching your videos and the way you make people educate about medical writing. I am in science communication as an editorial assistant. But I'm thinking to build my skills for medical writing as I'm more interested in this field. • @TheBoldPhD

      Everyone's path to medical writing is so different that it is not always easy for me to recommend a straight path except to say, find out what type of medical writing you want to do and then build some kind of portfolio there. Even if it is 2 or 3 pieces, I find employers like to see that you can write the type of content they want.

    Does a medical writer requires a phD to start or can a person with a bachelor's degree in a random medical field "for ex: medical laboratory technologist" start doing it ? (of course with the additional related courses to medical writing)

    • @TheBoldPhD
      @TheBoldPhD  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello. The short answer is no, you don't need a PhD to be a medical writer although a lot of medical writers do have some kind of advanced degree. Here's a lengthier explanation: th-cam.com/video/wlqSNc6Ec1s/w-d-xo.html

    I am a recent PhD graduate and taking some time off. I'm trying to figure out if I really want to go do a post doc in academia. I'm also thinking about doing a blog and affiliate marketing. What kind of links do you do for your affiliate marketing? I see your blog channel is about grad school life and job searching. I was also thinking about doing medical writing. My area of research was in stem cells and regenerative medicine. Not sure where to start with doing medical writing that relates to that.

    • @TheBoldPhD
      @TheBoldPhD  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Rebecca. I don't do much affiliate marketing with my current blog but did with older blogs. Back then I shared links to products I was using and which I thought would be relevant to my readers. This meant a lot of Amazon affiliate links as well as direct links to software I was using to build my blog. Medical writing does not really depend on your degree. I have colleagues with degrees in chemistry, neuroscience and people who trained primarily as journalists before breaking into science and medical writing. Having a PhD in your area however helps with understanding complex scientific topics.

    Hi Ma'am. Do you think it is important to take certificates to become a medical writer (im a dentist and M. Ph). Courses like AMWA essential skills, UCSD certificate etc. They are expensive and im not sure. Thank you

    • @TheBoldPhD
      @TheBoldPhD  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello. I did not take those courses and so I cannot comment on them. However, there are many medical writers/medical communicators I know who have not taken those courses and are doing well.

    You mentioned SEO
    What does that mean and why do I need to learn it?

    • @TheBoldPhD
      @TheBoldPhD  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      SEO is search engine optimization. Search engines like Google and Bing "grade" websites and web pages so that when someone enters a search term in the search bar, that search engine can provide them with the best result a person needs an answer for. Optimizing content for search engines means working on various parameters for a piece of content or website to help it meet those search engine specifications so it can be recommended when a person searches for a specific answer. You need it as a writer in the marketing sphere because this is a primary and very valuable way for business websites to get traffic and potentially interested buyers. Being able to drive relevant traffic to a business website is a skills that is highly valued in this space.
