Glad you like it. I practiced peonies for a year (about 20 years ago) to get the hang of them. The trick is to be loose with the petals so that they seem both delicate and lively.
Absolutely beautiful! I am a traditional Watercolorist whom was looking for peonies and you have captured this magnificently. Flowers and leaves so elegant. Thank you so much for sharing your talent on TH-cam!!!
I love her work it seems so easy but I know it took a long time for her to master it. I love the composition and the combination of color. I just love it!
You are very good at using the brush! Your way to use the brush is very Chinese. I am so surprised to see a western doing it perfectlly in traditional Chinese way. So beautiful they are. Thank you.
@Cukvala In this DVD I am using double shuen (thick) rice paper which I have pre-mounted on a board. I do not wet the board before painting on it. The brushes are traditional Chinese round brushes made from natural animal hair. I like hard or springy hair, described in catalogs as weasel or wolf hair, or bamboo/orchid brush. If I am painting peonies, I may use a softer goat hair brush.
@HappyRembrandt Thanks for viewing my video. The secret with Chinese style peonies is that there are definite strokes for the leaves and petals. On this video, I am using silk dyes on rice paper, which gives the colors a wonderful vivid translucence.
I order most of my brushes from oriental art supply or blue heron arts. Their brushes are good quality and they explain the 'soft' and 'hard' brushes. They are all handmade & they don't have numbers on them. For bamboo and leaves I would recommend the bamboo/orchid brush, which is hard bristle. For flowers, a 'basic soft' or 'flow' brush works well. If you go to my facebook painting page, which is VirginiaLloydDavies, you'll see what I'm working on every week. I usually mention what brushes and papers I am using.
Wow fabulous, you are a very talented artist, I have tried fusion painting I can't do that either, I even have overlays to practice on but it's no good my hands are just to shaky, But I do love to watch others, TFS Your wonderful art work, Rosemary
Thanks, Mag. The key to Chinese brush painting is practice. We were all beginners once. If you can, set up a table somewhere and lay out your brushes, ink and paper. Have a filled water container ready to go so whenever you have five minutes to spare you can do some strokes. It makes a big difference. Watch all my videos with a brush in hand so you can mimic my strokes; watch the angle of the brush in particular. Above all, enjoy yourself!
Thank you, I appreciate your kind feedback. If you want to see what I've been painting recently, you can go to facebook and look up VirginiaLloydDavies. You don't need to have a facebook account to see it. I post new paintings most days. - Virginia
that's traditional compositional style in Chinese painting: you have the energy bunched in one spot, and then it shoots out through an element like the flower on the long stalk on the left. It's all about chi and the use of negative space.
+foshou citron You can also find me on Facebook, where I put up new paintings every few days. It's an opportunity to comment and ask questions. See you there!
Hello Narima! Lovely to get your comment! I have used these brushes for acrylic painting too and they worked okay. They are designed for Chinese brush painting or sumi-e, though. If you go to orientalartsupply, you will find a good selection of reliable brushes. Happy painting and kisses back!

Yes! You can see many of my paintings on Facebook or on my website www.joyfulbrush.com. I spent a lot of time last year writing and illustrating a book for Quarto, called "Mindful Artist: Sumi-e Painting". I post new finished pieces on Facebook every week, though not usually videos because they take so much time to edit. Thanks for asking!
How kind of you to ask me to teach you, Emma Lin. Unfortunately, I am not accepting students at this time. You may find my new book "Mindful Artist: Sumi-e Painting" helpful. Good luck!
