Superbe !
Your pictures are very beautiful. I love your lessons. Thank you very much. Waiting for other lessons.
Thank you Miss Virginia..! I really like and love to draw and paint flowers since I was just a kid. And I am so greatful and full of joy watching how is it going to start and finish a beautiful and colourful flower painting. Now I have an idea.😊
I just discovered your videos, thanks a lot to help beginners like me, It a happiness to follow your gesture, It seems that the brush works exactly as you want, that is not my case for the moment. Thanks a lot. I am going to see more on your blog. can I ask you the size and the type of your brush , please. THANKS AGAIN
I'm delighted you are finding my videos helpful. Yes, part of the magic of an experienced painter is that the brush seems to go where you want! Of course, the way to reach that level of expertise is to keep practicing! You can see more videos and read more tips on my blog joyfulbrush.
I just found you! I learned Korean watercolor when we lived in Korea for a year! I love your easy to understand videos; do you paint on rice paper? I see that you paint on silk.
Hello Karen! I mostly paint on rice (xuan) paper these days. You might enjoy my new book, "Mindful Artist: Sumi-e Painting" for step-by-step images and finished paintings. I also discuss paper, ink, colors and brushes. I also have many mini-tutorials on my blog at www.joyfulbrush.com which you might enjoy. Happy painting!
So amazing.I took one class but the teacher told me my brush stroke was not strong enough....I wish I could use the brush better..Thanks for the video!
+Yen Shifflett Excuse me while I smack that teacher! I have been painting in this style for 40 years and sometimes even my strokes are weak and squiggly! The thing is that we keep practicing and bit by bit we get better. Even if we don't improve, so what? If you enjoy it, I say "do it"! Good luck and happy painting!
Fabulous! I notice that you did not use a "peony brush," which someone gave me, but which I do not know how to use. I can see that one does not really need a special brush to paint a believable peony.
thanks, Lizzie! I think the key is to find a brush that works for you. Generally, I use a soft hair brush for the flowers and a springier brush for the leaves and stems. As always, practice helps! Good luck and happy painting. If you go to my facebook page you will find new paintings every week.
Thanks for your kind comment. If you go to my blog post at www.joyfulbrush.com/blog/category/materials-list you'll see a detailed list of what I use. I hope it's helpful.
Thanks for your comment! I am using a raw (unsized) xuan (rice) paper. I may use a single xuan or a double xuan, depending on the look I want to achieve. You can see more about materials on my blog on my website joyfulbrush.
Philinte Le misanthrope so it sounds like you paint in oils. My experience is in watercolors. As a performer, you no doubt appreciate the performance aspect of Chinese brush painting, where you practice the strokes - as you would rehearse - then you 'perform' a painting, with no going back or changing anything, just like being on stage. This is both terrifying and exciting!
I love the dancing effect of everything there.. the flowers, leaves, stem.. wow! It's an explosion of harmony.. Soo beautiful ❤❤❤
Thanks! The dance of the brush, the song of the ink!
its so much joy to watch you,its almost meditation, thank you,Virginia.
Watching this over and over again, Virginia. Lovely and clear.

+Yen Shifflett you will find it easier to use the traditional materials.
amazing!!!
Beautiful!

What type of rice paper do you recommend? I love your composition of this painting!
a raw unsized rice paper is best for this technique. I use a thin paper but you can also use paper called double shuen.
