As a young man I followed Lee Trevino over the front 9 at Birkdale, early 1970s. At the time I had never seen anything like it and now over 40 years and many Opens later I have not seen anything better. Lee was 5 under after 6, and I remember thinking, hell, every shot he hits is perfect! I was so excited to see this yet Trevinos demeanour was that of someone enjoying a walk in the park. He had two qualities you so seldom see. Truly wonderfull control of the ball, and a ruthless killer instinct. Boy was he the real deal.
You Sir are Spot on... I witnessed his prowess at Birkdale circa 1976... not seen anything similar since.. & that's a long time ago. & I can play . Still now at 62 . Golf don't lend itself to SHOTMAKERS anymore..... so somerts a bit WRONG???????

Lee tells a story that he won two British Opens in 71 and 72. Said they didn't pay much and had to foot expenses to get there. Said if he won any more of them, he would have gone bankrupt.

Another story. Back when he lived in Preston trails area of n Dallas he was mowing his yard. A lady pulls up in a Cadillac and asks him how much he charges. He tells her they lady in this house let’s me sleep with her’.
I don't doubt this story is true because R. Floyd has told the same story but Diet Coke did not come on market until 1982 and I belive this story was sometime in the mid 1960's. But it is a great story and not only is Trevino a great player but Floyd was playing Trevino on his own course.

You have to admire Trevino. started working when he was five; i remember back in the late 60's, when the us open was played in n.j. at baltusrol, he didn't have enough money back then to afford a hotel and had to stay that week in someone's house. My dad took me to that open, saw him play, and became an admirer and fan ever since. i think he finished about fifth, and then won it the next year. Like peolple in here have commented, he didn't come from wealthy parents, that had money, or owned a chain of drugstores in ohio. worked hard for everything he achieved.
I use to love watching golf when I was a little kid. I didn’t even know what a par or birdie or bogey was. I just knew I loved watching those guys play. Loved watching Lee play. Seemed like he was always smiling or laughing. Him and Chi Chi. Great memories.

Raymond Floyd treated fans like crap. Saw him on more than one occasion in Pro/Am just blow everyone off. Same in tournaments. Totally opposite of Arnold Palmer
followed Lee at the PGA and he wasn't playing well. There was a holdup on the tee box and a fan asked him what the problem was. Without missing a beat Lee said he had trouble playing with a bra on-------he explained that his lady found it in his car and he had to say it was his to help his swing-----it worked to escape the wrath of his woman but was a disaster when he had to put it on and play.
Lee's dad left him and his mom when he was very young. He was brought up by his mom and grandparents. Lived in a little shack next to Gleneagles GC in Dallas. As a kid he would jump the fence n hit balls with a stick. He later caddied for the members. He now lives in a big house not to far from Gleneagles GC.

I had read Floyd's recounting of this many years ago, and Lee's version was very similar to Floyd's, except for the part where Raymond says to himself, "how the heck am I going to play on the PGA tour if I can't even beat some unknown locker room attendant", LOL! That isn't a direct quote, but the gist is there. Seriously, that does have to shake your ego up some, you're some kind of hotshot and can't beat some guy from nowhere. Trevino was my first "favorite" golfer, and I think it did have to do with the fact that even at a young age I could sense that he was an "outsider" that had snuck his way in under the ropes.

To his caddie, to the crowd, to his opponent and mostly to the ball. He even talked during his own back swing at times yet he could sculpt shots and call them before he hit them. Gotta love Lee.
Lee gave the best golf tip I ever heard...he was walking off the 18th green on a Champions Tour event and the TV interviewer talked about his round and then said, Lee could you give some of the viewers at home a tip that may help their games? Lee gave the tip which I don't recall what he said and then as he turned to walk away he turned back to the interviewer and said "oh and hitting 300 or 400 balls a day at the range doesn't hurt either"...there it is!
So many golf pros are about as colorful as a slice of white bread but Lee Trevino is as colorful as a kaleidoscope. I could listen to his stories for hours, the man is a master storyteller as well as a masterful ball striker. May God bless this man and keep him with us for many more years.

Never heard that he did, but he probably did. Find the story about a young Arnold Palmer who played a practice round with the stoic Hogan before the 1958 Masters. Palmer apparently did not have a very good round, whereupon Hogan turned to one of the other players in the foursome and asked him how 'that guy' got in the tournament. Of course Palmer went on to win the Masters that year. Palmer said later that he had a frosty relationship all his career with Hogan, who always addressed him as 'fella', and never called him by his famous name. When Palmer was asked why this should be so, he replied, 'I don't know.'

That story truly warmed my heart... Living in the Projects for the 1st 18 years of my life, I too had many experiences like this, & so many in Reseach Labs @the VA Hospital in Tucson, AZ. My sincere services to our WWII, Korea, & Viet Nam brave wounded veterans. I was there for them all, & all would ask me: "Damn, how old are U kid!?" While wearing my Lab Coat, & proudly responding: "I'm 15 & a half Sir" all smiled, & would let only me to use needles on them.

I went to a Senior Tour event here in Kansas City and followed Lee. On one hole he walked onto the green, looked at the short putt he had coming up, then looked over at the players on the next tee and pointed at them, saying "Hey, that guy walked in my line!"
