Ballesteros & Trevino "One Club Challenge"

  • First off - Apologies for the original VHS editing on this video tape and the poor picture quality of the channel it was recorded from, but it's still good fun to watch!
Filmed soon after Seve's 1984 win I think at St Andrews, both he and Lee Trevino take on Faldo and Aoki in a one club challenge over a few holes at the home of golf.
    Who remembers this series?

If the game was only played with one club, Seve would have won 50 majors

Trevino was just as effective with one club, but lacked Seve's physical power. Seve could probably hit a 5 iron 30 or 40 yards past Trevino. That's where Seve's advantage was. But working the ball left/right, around the green, out of bunkers, etc., they were pretty even. And Chi Chi Rodriguez was no one club slouch, either. In today's game, Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson would probably be the best one club players.

How cool if some billionaire offered an absurd purse of say 15 mil for a four day tournament. Players could only use 4 clubs on two of the days and on the other days they'd have to play with pre-1980's golf clubs only. Or just one or the other. Everyone would tune in to that.

one club which is close to unbelievable, Seve rope hooking some of his
drives for roll etc 38 yikes for nine holes I can't come up with anyone
Nelson, Snead, Hogan who might have been able to do that. The only one
I might give a chance to, and him barely would be Bobby Locke who
was a magician with a putter and more or less owned the British Open

I've actually practiced with the following: 3 wood, 4 hybrid, 5 iron, gap wedge & putter.
Long Par 5s: 3W off the tee and then again in the fairway for 2nd approach shot, GW if less than 110, or choke all the way down on the 5 iron if greater than 130 out
Par 4s: any combination of 3W or 4H off the tee, followed by 4H, 5I or GW full swing for second approach
Par 3s are tricky because of low yardages
for sand shots: Open the GW up all the way; GW becomes SW very easily with an open clubface.

I'd love it if golf would only allow for, say, 5 or 6 clubs. 14 is absurd. Would make for such an more interesting game. Can you imagine a PGA event where each player had to pick 6 clubs and stick with them for the whole tourney? Let's make 'em carry their own bags while they're at it. BTW, Lee Trevino still needs to shut up more often. And as amazing as Seve was with his short game, he was still nobody wanted to play in match play..not due to skill, but because his gamesmanship sucked.

After hearing the story about Seve hitting shot out of bunker with a 3 iron because it was the only club he owned as kid I was inspired to practice until I could do the same thing. What I learned in the process is that if you you place the club on the ground with leading age facing target where the ball will release off the face the nominal loft of the club matters little. What matters more is being able to get your body into the position to deliver the club back to that position. The way to do that is simply to set your club and body at address in the same way you want to at impact when addressing the ball. When I started lining up at address like that for regular shots with club at nominal loft and shaft angle with hips locked 45° open and shoulders back with side bend I started hitting the shots I imagined for the first time. Now when I teach any one I start by putting their club and body where they need to be at impact so they have a clue what the goal of the swing is and where the face need to be pointing when the ball releases off of it.

The caddies have the bags as the challengers to Seve and Lee were allowed to use a normal club for a difficult stroke but had to use a 2 stroke penalty if they did so. Lee and Seve had to use their 5 irons come what may. Hal Sutton used a 4 iron for his match as he felt he needed the extra club length. He still lost.

Me and my son's golf coach played the young bucks at this game. We whacked their asses with old age and treachery. Classic.

This would've happened on the Monday after The Open. These days the players would be off jetting to the next comp. No time for this kind of thing now.
