  • Although the front and rear tires on any mountain bike are important, rear mtb tires sometimes don’t get the same attention that front mountain bike tires do. Besides the obvious importance of tire grip, there’s also the fact that rear mountain bike tires take a tremendous beating. In this video installment, Worldwide Cyclery founder Jeff Cayley walks us through the shop's top picks for mountain bike rear tire treads. We cover everything from tire tread pattern and casing strength, to sidewall durability and rubber compounds. Check it out!

    I have to say the answer to "compound vs pattern" was spot on imo, having had to save funds at some point and buy a cheaper tire with a not so advanced technology or "special compound", I actually enjoyed the pattern designs a lot more ... but having both a great compound and design is the way to go in the end👌

They’re very reminiscent of the dhf and highroller 2 with similar weight and durability as the exo casing. Out of this bunch, for all around XC tire with good cornering, Rekon works well. I run it tubeless and modify the pressure to adjust for speed/grip. for 2.25 on the rear, 28-29 psi for speed. 26-27 for grip. Rolls pretty fast at higher pressures of 29-30 psi.

    • @matthewkramer8613
      @matthewkramer8613 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Recently I tried running the Ikon on the back. Ikon is super fast rolling, but noticeably less grip than a Rekon. At lower pressure the Ikon is grippy enough, but less confidence building than Rekon. Ikon is great tire if you are looking for tire that is easy to spin up and maintain momentum, unlike the Rekon where grip is more apparent. Ikon 2.2 at about 25 psi grips well enough, but care should be taken in cornering. Maybe a 2.3 would provide better cornering.. Ikon 2.2 works well over gravely ,loose, and hardpack. loose rocks over hard is ok at lower pressure. Lots of fun over rolling terrain with mixed conditions. Looser rocks and steeper climbs require something more aggressive like Rekon for XC though.

    Wider is better, plus high volume. But everyone has their favorite and it also depends what fits their bikes and clears the chain stays. I love Maxxis but wish they ran higher volume and wide as other brands,.

    Michelin wild enduros. Great rear tire. Front has massive traction but is a little slow on the roll.

    Wasn't very impressed with lateral traction on the vigilantes (unpredictable) compared to the Bontrager XR4's and I went back to the Xr4's. Stayed clear of WTB tires ever since. On my DH rig I've tried the DHF and it was just such and on/off tire that I went magic mary. Loved the Hans Damf on the my enduro for DH rides. This year I am trying some Onza Aquila's front and rear for my DH rig.

      Those XR4 tires are such a nice surprise. For a tire that does not look like it would have traction it is shocking. Also nice and light. Great asa rear tire.
