Maxxis Minion DHF vs DHR II (One Of Them Is Clearly Better)

  • Over the years mountain bike tire designs have changed but not as much as some would think. Whether it’s placebo or an actual performance gain, it seems everyone has their go to tire and Worldwide Founder Jeff Cayley is no exception. In this installment, Jeff shares his personal experience and opinion on two of the most popular Maxxis MTB tires, the Minion DHF and the DHR II. Although the DHR 2 tread pattern is intended to be a rear only tire it has become fairly popular to run it as a front tire as well. The debate for which tires tread pattern, rubber compound, or lug size gives better traction as a front tire will probably continue. We follow Jeff around the shop as he interviews some of our employees in this Maxxis tire comparison to see which of these trail/enduro options is the best MTB tire for you! Are one of these tires the best or is one just better for you?

      So I've used both front and rear - winter time DHR2 wins as it clears better, and for me, it has better wet grip which means here in the UK it could be on all year! Having said that when it really dries out last last summer I run DHFWT front and 2.3 rear! So Basically undecided..........

      on an AM / Enduro rig, no questions DHR II is one of the best tire for the rear, in most terrain conditions, also durable. On the front I feel that DHF has more grip, specially when u hard corner, its an special condition, the DHR II definitely brakes faster, for some reason does way better than the DHF. In a bike park I guess it would be better dhf and dhr in natural trails

    DHF front, DHRII rear. 👌 I definitely felt like the DHF didn't have the initial grab when pedaling and braking that the DHRII has. The DHF definitely likes to change direction faster with it's angled center knobs though. 27.5x2.6" F/R.

    the DHF gives a nice grip, so i decide to put it on front tire. the DHR with harder rubber allows to slide a bit and thats what i want on the rear tire. in my condition, the DHF on front and DHR on rear makes a good job.

    I recently rode an Ardent 2.4 on the front and now an Ardent Race 2.35 on front, I honestly don't feel a significant difference between the two although I do feel more comfortable with more tread up front. I think it's more subjective than most riders think, but it's great seeing some rubber up front reassuring you of some grip in those Oh Sh*t moments. Cool video, love the comedic movie relief clips thrown in :)

Can’t go wrong with either, really, but I feel the DHRII just grips better, especially when changing direction. It also works year-round on my trails in the UK, solid in dry, wet, damp etc. Use it in 3C MT compound. Run a dual compound High-Roller II on rear, awesome combo 🤘🏻

    For me it is more about a 2.4 vs a 2.5 inch tire. Interestingly, I have a very accurate scientific scale that I use for cooking, brewing, and weighing bike parts, and I had a DHR II WT 2.4 and a DHF 2.5 WT. The DHF was actually slightly lighter. (Makes me wonder about variations from tire to tire in the manufacturing process) I decided to go with the 2.5s front and back and have loved it.

  • @josh33172
    @josh33172 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Farve probably had the best answer. Truth is that the front tire and the rear tire have different duties (for the most part). Lateral grip is favored on the front. Contact patch is favored on the rear. Running the same tire front and rear can work if you're on really aggressive terrain. I'd say that neither of these tires are the best everywhere, but swapping in the Aggressor in the rear should yield better performance on more terrain types since it aligns more with what the rear wheel should do...but then again, all of this can be considered completely subjective, and riding style, terrain, tire pressure all matter.

    My Pivot Mach 6 came with dhf front and dhr2 rear but like you, I noticed the dhf slides and pushes too much around corners. Scary at times with leaves over hard pack. So I replace the front with dhr2, and sure enough grips better to me. Don’t really notice if the dhr2 is faster. I just want a tire that is predictable around fast corners. Cool you made this video, because most bikes come with both. And I didn’t like that combo. In fact I bought the dhr2 from you when it was on sale!!! Thanx!! 👍

    I run either magic mary or dhf up front and either highroller 2 or dhr2 out back
    The highroller n dhr seem like good rear options for bracking and when pedalling uphill in deep mud they seem to work like paddles

    Always DHF front, but I switch it up on the rear. I've got DHF on my HD4 now but might try a DHR or Aggressor when that wears out. On my Following I'm running DHF front and Nobby Nic (OMG!) rear. Still undecided on that though, only got one ride on it.

    Here I was think "R" stands for rear and "F" stands for front, until I got a new bike with a pair of DHR II's. Great tyres.

    Ultimate set up : Magic Mary on the Rear, DHF on the front ... In Alberta its usually pretty muddy and w. a DHF on the rear, youre asking for trouble.

    I wanted to try the DHF DHRII combo but got lost on size/casings/etc when trying to order. Ended up with Bontrager SE4's and they're just ok. Not better than the Conti Trail Kings I had before. Bought a set of WTB's Trailboss to try next time I need tires. Will probably try the DHF in tan sidewall when the WTB's wear out....
    Tire buying is not easy!!!

    I currently run the DHF up front and an Aggressor in the rear. But after watching this video, I’m tempted to run the DHRII in the rear for less rolling resistance.

    Which model dhr2 do you run in the front? Someone told me depends on the compound. I run DhF on the front because it feels like a faster roller. If they made a DhF 2.4 that would be awesome

  • @energ8t
    @energ8t 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I still ride my bike the way it came from your shop - DHRII front and back. Works pretty well in loose rocky terrain, but would try DHF in the front.

    I you look at Maxxis website, the "Performance Ratings" have the DHF and DHRII like this, Rolling Speed: DHF 3/DHRII 2.5; Cornering Control: DHF 3.5/ DHRII 4; Braking Traction: DHF 2.5/DHRII 4. Thses numbers are correct - I triple checked. So by Maxxis's admission, the DHRII is the slower rolling, better cornering, and better braking tire although everyone uses it in back. And, I've read that the "R" stands for "Rear" while the "F" stands for "Front"). It sure does seem like the DHF makes a better rear while the DHRII a better front. What am I missing?

  • @seancarter1275
    @seancarter1275 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    For me the DHF works under a wider range of trail conditions. Ain't that what mountain biking is about? Just keep going, don't stress too much about setup, just ride! DHF rules! For me an mtb can be ridden almost anywhere and on almost anything. That's why I love the DHF.

      dhr2 has better braking for sure , but 75% of brake load goes on the Front wheel so i run Dhr2 at both ends. exact same side lugs as dhf so same cornering

  • @MrBjorntsc
    @MrBjorntsc 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Both tires have an amazing amount of traction on hard pack when leaned over. I noticed the dhr did not corner as well until it was learned over, but braked better. Probably best to run the dhf up front until it gets steeper were you need more braking.
    The dead zone on the dhr before leaning it over made it feel weird as a front. This is also why I don't like semi slicks.

    • @flippy66
      @flippy66 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Are you sure you're not mixing them up? Because the DHF is well known for a dead zone, there's basically an empty channel between the middle and center lugs. You have to lean the DHF over more to get grip. The DHR has no such channel so grip is more consistent. See this video at the 3.20 mark th-cam.com/video/ylZFYb26Rz0/w-d-xo.html
