  • Although we are big fans of Maxxis mountain bike tires, there are a lot of other great MTB tire options out there. In this video, Jeff gives us a breakdown of the best mountain bike tires from Schwalbe, e*thirteen, WTB, Michelin, Teravail, Vittoria, Specialized, & Bontrager. As you can see, we have a packed list of tire options for you with new brands like Teravail who traditionally are known for their gravel/road tires. Although they are lesser-known in the US, Vittoria has a surprisingly large variety of mountain bike tire options that we dive into. And finally, just because we don’t sell them, doesn’t mean we won’t talk about them, we are talking about Specialized and Bontrager of course. A lot to cover in this episode, kick back and enjoy!

@@WorldwideCyclery tires are kinda a obsessive compulsive rabbit hole, so lots of content opportunity.
For me going from XC hardtail w/ Ron/ralphs my Maxxis feel so slow on my new Ripley because my local trails are SW Michigan dry hardpack with a little loose and sandy over hardpack with punchy climbs and roots. Built it with 2.4 Rekon MT frt/ 2.35 Ardent race, the Rekon grips pretty good until you push hard in a berm so want a little more grip, the AR seems slow and not as grippy as a Ralph. (I also never cut/damage Ron/ralph lightskins, just wear out)
I contemplating some extremes: dissector frt/2.35 speedgrip ralph rear, dissector front/2.35 mezcal or barzo rear, Aggro/martello front/barzo or mezcal real.... Lol.. right now mounting a old Rocket ron Speed on the rear and keeping the Rekon 2.4 MT up front to diagnose my drag.

I think it's important to look at tires as they are NOW. 6 years ago, or so, if you had recommended Continental tires to me, I'd have tuned you out because they tended to self destruct. About 2 years ago I got talked into trying them again and I'm a huge fan now! For my short travel 29er and my wife's SB5, a Trail King front, Mountain King rear combo is perfect for our riding. I've spent several hundred miles on them in Moab without any damage at all! Nice rolling, and if you like a DHRII up front, but it's too much, the Trail King is a good "lite" substitute.

Jeff the discontinued WTB rear tyre you were on about was called the Breakout. Would have liked to hear an opinion on the tyres, coming from a WTB vigilante/trailboss which I love would be nice to heart them compared to other tyres that don't get much coverage.

Vittoria XC tires are great. Fast rolling, no wobble (xx brand...), some grip with the Barzo, which was unexpected for me, as I'm used to XC tires sticking like damp wood and slick rock.

I was lazy and didnt take off the SE4s before going to a bike park, that was a mistake, but I survived. next time the DHR2 will be put back on for park.

I came from a DHF / DHR 2 and when I bought my new bike it came with a Butcher / Purgatory. Holy crap was I impressed with the traction. The butcher is definitely on par with a DHF and the purgatory rolls really well. Maybe equivalent to a rekon?

    • @mrvwbug4423

Purgatory is comprable to the Aggressor, Ground Control is more akin to a Rekon or Ardent. I was impressed with the new T series Butcher and Eliminator that came on the Stumpy Evo I demoed, but I've also ridden the previous versions and wasn't impressed. I currently run Assegai/DHR2 for reference.

Haha, mix and match is what I'm all about! I have a trek, I have the first gen specialized z cage and a specialized bottle on my bike.
The z cage was a carry over from my stumpjumper and I see no reason to buy something different and a friend of me whole heartedly recommended the high quality version of their bottles when my old and trusty camelback burst during a ride.

I have always used maxxis (assegai and dhr) and that is what normally comes with my bike. I am very satisfied with their tires but I would also like to experiment with different types of tires for sure. I usually tend to buy tires that are less than 60$ if i can or even 50$ at times. I think WTB makes some good tires at that price but haven't checked in a while...

My Rockhopper 29 came with Specialized Ground Control but swapped for the Fast Track. Not sure which Maxxis or Other brand tire would be a better choice on Light gravel and pavement. Tire design is a big deal, but the compound is critical, ( also weight conscious on equipment).
Budget is a factor as well.

I was wondering if you or anybody else here has any good knowledge/experience with the Vitus Sentier VR. I know I want an aggressive HT, and the Sentier VR seems to hit all the marks super well. It is my 2nd true mountain bike, and I am starting to get really into the sport, but my budget can't yet stretch much past $1500 USD. If anybody has any bikes in mind with solid disc brakes, 1x drivetrain, a solid air fork, thru-axles front and rear, and a good set of tires.
