- The first tying video of the mini series - The 4wt. Chronicles - starts out with the Pheasant Bugger Jig!
The Pheasant Bugger Jig is a mid sized, suggestive pattern imitating a wide range of forages in part. Forages such as Small Crawfish, Large Burrowing Mayflies, Large Stoneflies, Dragon Flies, Hellgramites, small Minnows and the like.
Because of the subtle weight, and riding hook point up - the fly can be dead drifted, dredged, floated under a bobber, stripped, and swung all to good effect.
Fishing small suggestive flies like this is a world of fun and the best part is you never know what might eat it!

Tail: Pheasant Tail
Tail: Pheasant Marabou
Body: Palmered Pheasant Marabou Shafts
Collar: 2x Pheasant Rump (1x medium, 1x short)
Head: 5/32" or 4mm Slotted Tungsten Bead
Hook: Ahrex sz. 4, 90 degree Jig Hook
I really love those quick ties, especially for fishing places where snags frequently occur. It's always sad to lose a fly, but it's better to lose a quick tie instead of a difficult, expensive pattern!

Great bug Gunnar. You must be a fan of Jack Gartside too, amazing material those RN Pheasants. I was going to buy a hen skin but I found one I didn't know I had while sorting my hunting and roadkill feather and fur collection. Thanks for these fly and jig (spinning jigs) as I do both. I tied up a bunch of these last year and literally caught everything in my home river on it. Upper section of the river is mostly trout. But the lower section you get into more small mouth and warm water species. I caught browns, rainbows, tons of football sized bronze backs, sunfish, and a really nice carp. I just used it on my ultralight spinning outfit under a small slip bobber cause my 5/6 WT was broken.

If the bead is crowding the eye, it might be on backwards.
I think the beads backwards, but I'm sure you've figured it out by now! Great fly man!
Slotted beads are designed to be placed with the slot facing the tail of the fly. That way they sit properly on the jig hook eye.
Generally throw little poppers and foam bugs for bluegills with my 4-5 wt. Thinking I'll try this buggy pattern as a top water fly. Thanks for the good stuff. Keep'm coming.
Gunner, I have found your pheasant skin patterns work very well for me for Smallmouths. Thanks for sharing your patterns. I do have a question; can you tie this pattern for trout? I’m sure if you used smaller feathers from a pheasant skin these patterns would work.
for a 4wt would you recommend the 8' or 8'6"?
Great looking little jigs, but you’re putting the bead on backwards.
I like the bead on backwards. Don't have to bend the hook to get it on. Just pulled in a channel cat on this fly a half hour after tying it.
I would do a balanced style hook. set-up.I don't have a size 4 jig hook .my largest is an 8.
Hey Gunnar, what is a good substitute for the pheasant marabou? The skin I have doesn't have any. I'm assuming just regular gray marabou would work. Is that the case?
