Fly Tying: Pheasant Rump Muddler

- Something that I strive to do with nearly all my fly tying, is to generate Silhouette Counterparts within similar material sets. Good examples:
Jerk Jr. (high and tight) and Fuzz Jr. (bulkhead) and Slow Jig Clouser (low profile) - Single Hook Dubbing Brush Flies
Super Jerk (high and tight) and Hot Fuzz (bulkhead) and Skinny Dipper (sculpin) - Articulated Dubbing Brush Flies
Impostor (high and tight) and Chosen One (bulkhead)
Con Man (high and tight) and Articulated Geezer (bulkhead) - Zonker Flies over SF Blend
ect......
Now fish silhouettes can be as accurate/complicated as you'd like to make them, but for the most part they are easily simplified. The purpose of this fly is a simple adaptation to the Pheasant Rump Baitfish pattern allowing us to more accurately imitate low water column species such as Sculpin and Gobies, and is a perfect example of a silhouette counterpart.

Materials: Pheasant Cape, Deer Body Hair
Tail: Pheasant Rump
Body: Palmered Pheasant Rump (Long to Short)
Wing: Stacked Pheasant Marabou
Pec Fins: Pheasant Shoulder
Head: Spun Deer Hair
Thread: 0.006" Mono
Hook: Ahrex sz. 4 Saltwater Streamer

This fly looks great for Smallmouth. The variegation and colors in Pheasant make it one of my favorite feathers to tie with. I'm filling a box for a friend and this pattern is definitely going in it.
You are fun to watch, Galloup sure is right to feel threatened by you. Out of all the fly tiers you two are the most thoughtful and deliberate with your designs and methods. Keep it up!

Love it! Been using pheasant rump for sculpins for 30 years. First trip on the Madison in 1990, it took 21 fish over 16" the first day.

I've started attaching my feathers by the stem with the figure 8 wrap and I like it much better than attaching by the tip of the feather. Thanks for the awesome techniques as always!

Very nice, I've always been a big fan of pheasant. Cant wait to see what ya come up with next!
I think Pheasant rump and skins are my favorite material for tying small stream streamers. It has such a natural look under the water and it imitates lots of things swimming and crawling around. I have already run out of the marabou area of my skins so I have been cheating and using blood quills.

These are coming awesome, really liking the monofilament thread, it does do a great job holding the feathers at the right angle and staying put. I also tried out a zoo cougar variant with pheasant, looks great.
I live near well it's an hour a 20 min drive, that has some really big brown trout, not many but I think this one on a sink tip fishing the likely spots just before and during dawn and then at the last bit of light at the end of the day will produce some decent fish. It will be like steelhead, a lot of casts for one or two fish, got plenty of lakes with lots of bass so yeah. There is a lot of flies that you can tie off of a pheasant, as Jack Gartside would say. He would really approve this one.

The dark Blue feathers from up in the neck area are great soft hackle feather for nymph legs and soft hackle flies as there is very little taper to the fibers. Neat pattern but I like muddler patterns to have an inverted hook which is easy enough to do.
That fly will catch fish.

Really nice pattern! Question about a possible variation. How would you tie that with some weight to reverse the hook point upwards? I tend to fish dark clousers, here in Ohio, dragging the bottom to imitate crayfish and sculpin.
I would try either extra small dumbell eyes or maybe some bead chain, it won't take much to get the hook to orient point up, tie it in like you would on a clouser
