Morphy actually stayed up till four in the morning walking around Paris every night before each of the first 2 games. Which partly explains why he's doing so badly so far.
Harrwitz style probably just was new to Morphy and he was also a good player in his own right. Not every one Morphy can figure out in Game 1. Just feel like he needed more time than usual to understand Harrwitz's play. Harrwitz didn't play nearly as crazy as everyone in that era, so it makes sense. But as the results show, once Morphy got comfortable, it was lights out.
@Pagan he beat all who challenged him , the rest avoided playing him. He played his first game at 6 yrs old. Was only allowed to play for few hours Sunday evening and read his first chess book when he was about 18 , played part time and self taught . Then quit by like 22yrs old or something as no one wanted to challenge him. So he was definitely good !
Makes me think Agadmator would make a good Bond villain :-). He’s got the accent, he’s got the devoted pet always in shot, he’s always in control and he’s got the quips
The Paul Morphy Saga is one of the great contributions to the online world. It’s a work of art history and it’s just got serious. Riveting stuff Agadmator Looking forward to Morphy repaying his insults
This is how Americans win championships -- they spot their opponent the first two games. Don't believe me? Check this brief history... 1858 - Morphy "loses" the first two games to Harrwitz, and then... 1941 - The U.S. gives Germany and Japan a two-year head start in their bid for world domination, and then... 1972 - Bobby Fischer "loses" the first two games to Boris Spassky, and then... 2011 - The Vancouver Canucks take the first two games against the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup Final, and then... (note: I live in Vancouver, and that one really hurt!)
Past humans were smart too lol and without past good chess players, this generation and slightly less new generations (not to mention AI) wouldn't have nearly as much game knowledge. It is more impressive though because they didn't study computer engines. They just read a lot and played a shit ton.
Morphy is actually one of the most computer accurate players of all time (I believe there are only like 13 guys ahead of him in the history of chess). And harrsitz was about the #3 of the time.
That's what I've been telling all along. Every one says Steinitz ushered modern era. But I've watched quite a bit of harwitz apart from Morphy-harwitz eight games. He really plays the modern defensive positional game. The reason probably Morphy lost the first three games. Then Morphy adjusted his style and beat him at his own game. Of course it's only my opinion and I'm no connoisseur of chess. But this is what I feel.
I find that after watching a few of these videos, Morphy, Fischer-Spassky, Carlsen-Whomever, that my online play suddenly becomes a notch or two more insightful, for a while at least.
If you know your opponent is in control of their pulse when facing you in whatever realm it happens to be , you should be very cautious... it means they are not worried in the least, and you are not necessarily winning. "If you wish to control others, you must first control yourself"...
Harrwitz played a workmanlike game -- no brilliant moves, but always the appropriate move without errors. Morphy didn't play an error-prone game, but he permitted himself to fall into a bad defensive position that a competent player could pick apart. He wasn't accustomed to playing anyone strong enough for his own mistakes to be exploited. No, I don't think he threw the game, he just assumed he could get by with a slovenly defensive structure and his opponent wouldn't be strong enough to exploit it.
Morphy: OK, now I'm ready to kick it into gear. Harrwitz: Stevedore transpiring ribald pancake makeup applied to extraneous solutions from quadratic outpourings of similtudinous grandiloquencervescebtaneousolotive grabbernatz.
This was amazing, its the 1800s, and both players get an accuracy of over 91%. DH with 94%, and PM with 91%! Morphy's problems started when he went 19. Rad8 instead of Kg7
This was a drawable end-game even for the normal players. But it is much easier to say that when you are watching. When you are playing there are many factors (fatigue etc.)
@agadmator there is a very interesting match between Harrwitz and Staunton btw. I think Harrwitz lost something like 9.5 to 11.5 BUT in 7 games Staunton got to premove Harrwitz's pawn and first figure, in the second 7 games he got to premove a pawn and two figures and only in the last 7 games Harrwitz was free to play what he wanted. He won all 7 of those and Lord, he absolutely degraded Staunton in those games, maybe we can get to see at least one of those? Also for anyone still doubting Harrwitz, regarding historical elo, he was the world's rank 1 player for 3 years. He also got paid by the owner of the Cafe de la regencia to play there full time. And I don't know if it was said in the comments to the first video, the historical Cafe de la regencia does not exist anymore, the building does, but there is no trace left of the Cafe. Instead there is a morrocan tourism bureau now.
This is the first game between Morphy and Harrwitz. There was a game before the match, so actually THIS is their first game. But I blundered the order, so now we will see the first game. The order doesn't really matter.
Players generally weren't very sporting back then were they? "Yeah sure you can travel across the Atlantic I just won't play you until it's been approximately forever." "Yeah I'll play you but you literally have to play the moves I want you to play." I mean what does this game prove? It's a joke anyone would be ridiculed nowadays for such poor sportsmanship.
"Harrwitz raises Morphy's hand and proclaims his pulse beats no faster than if he had won." There you have it- the world's first backhanded compliment.
I think Morphy (so hard not to say Murphy as an Irish man) is the best player to encourage players to play. I'll always consider him as one of the greatest of all time. If you grew up in his time, with the same information and standards. How good would you be and if he grew up playing in this time, would magnus have his hands full.

Is 5.5-0.5 obliterated? I'd say so.
@@12jswilson That's kinda obliteration to me👍.

great reference to the Agadmator storyline!
yay, you watched his video
I can't wait until tomorrow when we get the "Real First Game!"
Yes. Exactly!
I love how confident Morphy is. Truly the pride and sorrow of chess.

The work you do for CHESS is unapproachable, Agadmator. Thank you.
Two Morphy games in one day? We are blessed. 😊

@Pagan I can certainly appreciate Harrwitz, I can't not remove by bias for Morphy though :)
@Pagan He was the greatest of his time by far. He couldn't beat players from today, but that is because we are like 150 years of theory further.
@Pagan he beat all who challenged him , the rest avoided playing him. He played his first game at 6 yrs old. I listen to your channel for the history as much as the chess. Context gives color to the chess match and players.
Never forget when Löwenthal blew a 9-1 lead against Harrwitz
What the hell? This looks like a modern game. HOW??? JUST INCREDIBLE
