not spoilers, just context: Jack was once a sailor for the East India trading company, and Cutler Beckett had ordered that jack transport some cargo on his ship "the Wicked Wench". turns out that cargo was one hundred slaves. jack refused and set the slaves free. in consequence, Beckett branded jack as a "pirate" for "stealing East India Trading company cargo" and burned Jacks ship "the Wicked Wench" at sea so it sank. Jack then made a deal with Davey Jones to raise the ship from the depths, so Jones made a bargain with Jack that in exchange for his soul, the ship would be raised from the depths and Jack could captain it for thirteen years, at the end of thirteen years, Jones would come to collect Jack and the ship. When the ship was raised, the hull was still blackened by the fire, so Jack renamed it "The Black Pearl". when jones said an equal price for jacks soul would be 100 souls, it was in reference to the 100 slaves Jack had freed originally that set the whole situation in motion.

I think you misunderstood the love triangle. There isn’t one. The compass kept pointing to Jack when Elizabeth used it because Jack is the answer to getting Will back. She kissed him so she could distract and then shackle him so he would die. They showed Will seeing the kiss and left him believing that she wanted Jack and it broke his heart. I don't know, as I understood it, she was never really in love with Jack, but it also wasn't JUST a game and the kiss a distraction. I think Jack embodied adventure and freedom and danger and Elizabeth was drawn to that, because she was in a phase of her life where she didn't know what exactly she wanted. You can see that she is frustrated and confused herself when the compass points to Jack, her expression is not a definitive "lmao never I know I don't love him, that must mean something else." With the kiss, she tasted what she was drawn to only to realize it was not what she wanted after all. I think it's complex and I'm not sure how to put it into words, especially since english is not my first language, but I think reducing her character and their relationship to just calculated games wouldn't do it justice, it was more complex.
It is supposed to be a bit ambiguous. It is unclear whether she wants to be with Jack or rather be Jack (something that usually only shows up in gay content) or if she only wants to distract him... the time the compass locks on him her deepest desire could have been to find the person responsible for Will being on the Dutchman. Yeah, I think the compass point to jack to answer Norrington’s question to Elizabeth about how Will ended up on the Dutchman. Then, because Jack was flirting with her and Norrington says something about it she also interprets it differently and isn’t sure why it would point to him. Then on the island I’d say it was actually pointing to the heart, he was just on the other side of it, again confusing her. I do think Jacks words about her wanting adventure and freedom are true though, which has nothing to do with Jack in reality but again, is true enough that Elizabeth is confused.

Fun fact, the scene were Sparrow mocks Davey Jones with the "I got a jar of dirt!" Was not in the script. Depp just said that, so the confused faces on Will and Elizabeth were genuine confusion lol.
The compass pointed towards Jack on the ship not because she liked him but because what Elizabeth wanted most changed in that moment which was the answer to Norrington's question about how Will ended up on The Flying Dutchman.
@@thecocoacouchI think she knew. A lot of people tend to misread that scene though because it points towards Jack after that little flirty moment while they completely overlook what Norrington asked Elizabeth if she never wondered how Will ended up on The Flying Dutchman combined with the fact that the compass points to what you want most and what you want most changes. There is a little bit of flirtation towards Jack but it's not to the extent that Elizabeth loves Will. It's more like toying with Jack and testing him but not actually trying to get with him. Jack is difficult to read for a lot of people especially Elizabeth because she thought he was a good man but his character is more complicated than that. He's a pirate but he does have good within him. Even at the end of this movie Elizabeth felt guilty because she was the one who resulted in Jack's death and while her kissing him was only used to distract Jack from what she was about to do she also felt guilty about that but she did it in order to save Will because the Kraken was after Jack and not the ship. It's easy to misread but if you go back and rewatch some of those scenes you'll notice what I've said. It is supposed to be a bit ambiguous but any attraction that there is for Elizabeth is also ambiguous in itself. Does she want to be with Jack or does she basically want to be Jack. She was always fascinated with piracy and in the first movie she longed for the freedom that Jack represents. This is also why it seems so easy for her to adapt to this lifestyle where Will had struggled so much in the first one.
You mean to tell me it’s taken me almost two decades to realize that the compass isn’t pointing to Jack bc she wants him, but bc she wants to know the answer of Norrington’s question???
31:26 norington told her "you never wondered how your latest fiancé got on the flying Dutchman in the first place" then she looks at the compass and it points to Jack. She wanted to know the answer(which is what the compass does "points to what you want) and it pointed to Jack because she wanted to know how Will ended up on the flying Dutchman.
"How many souls you think my soul is worth?? 100 Souls." Beckett said him & Jack have a history & they left their marks on each other. This was explained in a deleted scene; Jack was supposed to transfer a cargo for Lord Beckett. He found out the cargo is 100 slaves, so he freed them & told Beckett "people are not cargo, mate". This led to Beckett labeling Jack as a pirate. It appears that he took the 100 slaves to Tortoga
"There will come a time when you have a chance to do the right thing." "I love those moments. I like to wave at them as they pass by." Fun Fact: The movie was shot back-to-back with Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End (2007). Location Location Fact: Tia Dalma's (Naomie Harris) swamp is a re-creation of the opening bayou scene in the ride in Disneyland, complete with fireflies. Practical Over CGI Fact: Stellan Skarsgård's character was the only member of the Flying Dutchman who was wearing make up. Stellan Skarsgård's makeup took four hours to apply. What Script Fact: The scene when Jack Sparrow calls Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) "fish face" and sings "I got a jar of dirt" to him, was unscripted and improvised by Johnny Depp, most of the reactions of the rest of the characters are real. While not ad-libbed, the scene where Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) kisses Jack Sparrow was actually left out of Orlando Bloom's script for a better reaction. CGI Over Practical Fact: To portray Jones on set, Bill Nighy wore a motion capture tracksuit and tracking dots on his face, which meant the animators at Industrial Light & Magic did not have to reshoot the scene in the studio without him, or on the motion capture stage. Several actors later admitted that it was often difficult to act against Nighy wearing the suit and dots on his face, and not burst into laughter.
3:36 in regards to the monkey being cursed, there’s an after credit bonus in each of the movies! Last one, the monkey steals a coin again which makes him cursed again lol great reaction!!
Okay, something I literally just noticed about this movie right now: at 22:13, as Will is saying "Jack Sparrow sent me to settle his debt," he glances in the Black Pearl's direction right at the end. That's probably how Jones instantly knew where Jack was.
Pro tip for all movie watchers, always, always, in every movie you should look for scenes after the credits, because it may turn out that there are some
Depp made Jack walk that way because it's his 'sea' legs. He's more used to walking on a ship than he is on land. So when on a ship, you'll notice he's almost normal with some swagger. But on land he's 'wobbly' due to his natural inclination to attempt to counter the waves of the sea rocking the boat!
I’m glad you’re following up with the second entry so quickly. These films are so charismatic, you can’t help but fall in love with them. Good job as always.
Once again I will reiterate that James Norrington is the most complex character written in this series and he's the one who gets the most development throughout. This movie doesn't put him in a good light but he's still my favourite character in this series. By the end of this movie I end up hating Elizabeth and Jack a little and am pretty much apathetic to Will and his plight. The Former Commodore, though? His story is just getting more interesting.
22:50 he actually *isn't* good with it, that's why he tried to trick Davy Jones into sending Will back, by pretending it would be worse for Will to married off to his girl and slowly come to (inevitably, in Jones's opinion) have his heart broken in the way Jones had. Jones saw through that, though, picked up on the fact that Jack cares what happens to Will, so Jones is trying to make him suffer with the thought that he has condemned Will. But Jack is just trying to buy time. The whole thing with rounding up people in Tortuga, with pretending to be fine that Will is on the Dutchman, it's all to throw Jones off and make him think Jack is just bargaining for a way to better his own circumstances. Jack's goal is to get a crew, resupply the ship, and get the chest. Once he has the chest, he can control Jones and make him set Will free, as well as call off the kraken and erase Jack's debt.
I think I half agree. Definitely changed my opinion. Perhaps he thought Will had the best chance of finding the key and ultimately would want to find the chest to barter for both him and Wills freedom. I think at this point Jack still sees Will as a means to an end but definitely doesn’t just “not care” about Will whatsoever. Also I think this makes it more satisfying in the third film when he finally puts Will first before his chance at immortality.
When the crew visit Tia Dalma and she lets the monkey out of the cage, he immediately scurries off into the back room. In that scene you can spot a body on the table the monkey goes to. That’s Barbossa’s corpse shown as a hidden Easter Egg foreshadowing his resurrection. I watched this movie multiple times growing up and always thought Barbossa just turned up. Until I watched it few years ago and realised his corpse was there and Tia Dalma resurrects him.
I can just imagine what's going on in their heads in regards to all the crap they're seeing in one lifetime already: undead pirates, cursed fish people, Davy Jones, the Flying Dutchman, a kraken and now a dead man come back to life.
I love Johnny so much. He's perfect for this role. Funny you bring up Charlie Chaplin. He's in a movie called Bennie and Joon, which I highly recommend you react to, where a lot of his characters actions are based on Charlie Chaplins. Such a great actor.
I went to Disney World once and they had a store with disney paintings. There was one of Davy Jones in the Flying Dutchman alone underwater called 'I am the sea' and I really wanted it but I was still a teenager and it was way out of my price range.
6:40 - This is explained in the novelization, and there’s a deleted scene in which Becket and Sparrow talk about it. Since I know you’ve seen all three movies here I’ll talk about it. Basically, before Jack became a Pirate he was an honest sailor working for the East India Trading Company as a cargo merchant, captaining a ship called the Wicked Wench. One day he discovered that the cargo he was hauling was a hundred slaves. This horrified him, so he freed the slaves. Becket, upon finding out what Jack had done, was enraged. He branded Jack as a pirate for the crime of stealing his cargo and had Jack’s ship burned and sunk. Jack swam out and attempted to board his burning/sinking ship to rescue it, but was unsucessful and thus he went down with the ship. Davey Jones found him in this condition and the two struck a bargain; Jack would be able to remain a mortal in command of the Wicked Wench for thirteen years, at the end of which his soul would belong to Jones and he would become a member of the Flying Dutchman’s crew (Additionally; Jack’s soul was worth 100 souls because of the 100 slaves he’d freed). Jones raised the Wicked Wench from the depths, and with his magic it was able to stay afloat despite being charred and damaged, this magic is also why the ship seemed to make its own wind and was thus very fast. With the boat being charred black, Jack rechristened it the Black Pearl. He was in command of it for only two years before the mutiny.
I'm sure someone already explained the actual reason or that you found out yourself seeing as you've watched the 3rd movie but the reason Jack's Compass wasn't working for him was because (in my interpretation at least) was because he did want the heart and to settle the debt, but he also knew that might require him to stab it and take over the dutchman himself and the duties/restrictions (not to mention the penalties for failing to uphold your duties) that came with it had him hesitant because if there's one thing Jack values as much as his life it's his freedom. I think that regardless of our various interpretations of his character and personality, we can all say that he values freedom fairly much
3:30 yes the monkey is still cursed, but you would know why if you watched the end credits scene all of these movies have an end credit scene, a lot of movies does, so I highly recommend sticking around til after the credits
I love that you are watching these movies, they’re just such fun, over-the-top swashbuckling goodness. I really enjoy that you actually take the time to analyze scenes, shots, etc., I appreciate a good eye for film, so thank you! However, my brother in film, you must watch Hereditary if you haven’t seen it yet. In the dark. Alone. Trauma!
The plot i find to be very complicated, its difficult to keep up. But i love the twinkle in the eye the comedy that they show from time to time, Geoffrey Rush really capsulate that twinkle, love that. The next one is not so lighthearted and fun and that makes it feel a little bit to heavy and to grandios. When i saw the last one i did not know what i was seeing, there is so much going and so weird stuff to. It will be interesting to hear what you think of it.
Depp (in real life) is a Guitar player and modeled some of his body movements after the Rolling Stones (I saw them once in Concert) Guitarist, Kieth Richards. Remember that in the future, it could come in handy...
13:42 You know for the longest time I too thought that, but I think through another reaction I found a comment pointing out that the reason they stop and look at each other is the point when they realise the drums have stopped and they need to hurry before they are checked up on, heard or are genuinely worried for Jack. But perhaps I should watch this movie again myself as I couldn't quite tell if that was the case through this reaction.
46:44 So Barbossa came back ( I think ) due to the end credits scene of Pirates 1. The funny monkey stole a coin from the chest at the end and presumably gave the coin to Barbossa before he bled out. Either that, or its simply wacky Tia Dalma magic.
38:49 According to the screenwriters, in terms of pure swordfight, Will is the most skilled, Barbossa and Norrington second and evenly matched, with Jack falling third as in fact, the worst. 😂 39:18 And is unknown where Elizabeth would fit, but she was taught by Will and she showed her skills quite well.
End credit scene in first, was the monkey stealing a coin. Elizabeth never loved Jack. The compass pointed to how Will ended up on the Dutchman (which was Jack), and she kissed him as a distraction.
39:21 I like to think that will began teaching Elizabeth to fight once they got together since there is somewhat of a time skip between the end of the curse of the black pearl and the start of this one :)
13:42 what you thought i thought for soo long but actually they noticed the drums stopped witch means jack's time is up they got to go faster, not that they wanted the ship for themselves.
At the beginning, because of the undead monkey, I think you should also watch the extra scenes after the credits. :P :P In all PotC movies. Love your reactions by the way, like always. edit: Someone actually said that to you ahaha...no I would really say that all the scenes should be watched.
It's funny how you compared Depp's physical acting to Charlie Chaplin. You need to watch the movie Benny and Joon, another Johnny Depp movie. You'll see why the comparison you made is VERY apt. Please, everyone, throw some likes behind this and get our guy to watch this one!
The end credits scenes aren't major things, they're just a small little bonus bit. The first one's end credit scene hints that Barbossa could come back, and shows how the monkey is still a zombie.
The thing with the compas, I don't belive that Elizabeth loved Jack (maybe she had a crush on him... I mean who doesn't😅) but the compas pointed to Jack because what he represents; freedom. Elizabeth wanted to know how it feels like to be as free as Jack, his lifestyle.... carelessness. At least that's what I believe. ...or/and at that moment on the ship, she wanted to know how Will ended up on the Dutchman.
Yeah your comments at the end are on point. Having Jack NOT be the main character made him stand out more - that was why he became the break out character. As the movies went on, he became more prominent and in 4/5 he was the main character and it was to the detriment of the character and the films as a whole. He was much better as the stand out third protagonist.
The scene where Elizabeth chained Jack to the mast after kissing him has an even deeper context to it. I mean Jack is no stranger to betrayal, so when Elizabeth pulled the trigger, he was happy and glad that she did it. Elizabeth said previously that she had enough of pirates, but doing this act to Jack is more than enough to brand her as a pirate. Classic irony
This is my favorite of the movies, as far as comedy goes. Johnny is HILARIOUS. The only scenes that ever pop in my mind from these movies are the tribal scenes and the wheel sword fighting.

He found out the cargo is 100 slaves, so he freed them & told Beckett "people are not cargo, mate". This led to Beckett labeling Jack as a pirate. It appears that he took the 100 slaves to Tortoga
"There will come a time when you have a chance to do the right thing."
"I love those moments. I like to wave at them as they pass by."
Fun Fact: The movie was shot back-to-back with Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End (2007).
"If you're a good person, you do almost have to lose some freedom to be loyal to people and to help people." Good observation.
I’m glad you’re following up with the second entry so quickly. These films are so charismatic, you can’t help but fall in love with them. Good job as always.
I read somewhere that it was a Will and Elizabeth story, but Jack Sparrow became a fan fave that he became the main.
25:36 "Eugh.....his brain is still attached...."
Yeah...that's usually how being alive works. 😂
He's not really alive though.
"what an intro."
Come on, you know Jack, he always has to make an entrance.
The post credit scenes aren’t always super important… but it explains certain plot points (aka the undead Jack (monkey))
One of the best reactors seriously, plenty of movie showing, good reactions, not annoying. Good stuff mate
For 2006, the CGI tentacle beard of Davy Jones is amazingly well done. The physics are spot on.
@@ojwh1933 Oh I didn't mean to insinuate that the entire package wasn't great - just that the tentacle physics and behavior are sublime.
3:36 monkey is still cursed because in the last scene of the movies we see how monkey takes a coin
The first after credits szene was "important", because it explains WHY Jack (the monkey) is still cursed.
My current D&D character’s appearance is based on Davy Jones. I absolutely love his character. “I am the sea.”
I think that regardless of our various interpretations of his character and personality, we can all say that he values freedom fairly much
Dang! I wasn’t expecting the second installment so quickly! Seeing this vid drop made me so happy😊
3:30 yes the monkey is still cursed, but you would know why if you watched the end credits scene
all of these movies have an end credit scene, a lot of movies does, so I highly recommend sticking around til after the credits
It won Best Visual Effects at the 2007 Academy Awards.
The Pirates trilogy is so fking good. Such a crazy adventure with great characters
This movie kinda reminds me "Empire strike back". At least because of the "death" of the most charismatic character, and the winning of the bad guys
Words can't express my joy when you mentioned R & G: their story was so brilliant and fun.
It was Tia Dalma who resurrected Barbossa. (I only say this because he’s watched At World’s End, so no spoiling can be done). She’s very powerful
One of the best sequels! Great reaction!
yeah will is actually the main character but cause of how popular Jack is it became more of his movie
grew up watching it and love it and love that final stand
38:49 According to the screenwriters, in terms of pure swordfight, Will is the most skilled, Barbossa and Norrington second and evenly matched, with Jack falling third as in fact, the worst. 😂
39:18 And is unknown where Elizabeth would fit, but she was taught by Will and she showed her skills quite well.
"Why do they start off so creepy?" Oh sweet child, just you wait for the next one!☠☠
Love the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern reference. If you haven't seen Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, it's a must watch.
At the beginning, because of the undead monkey, I think you should also watch the extra scenes after the credits. :P :P In all PotC movies. Love your reactions by the way, like always. edit: Someone actually said that to you ahaha...no I would really say that all the scenes should be watched.
28:24 FYI: They’re playing “Liar’s Dice”.
It's funny how you compared Depp's physical acting to Charlie Chaplin. You need to watch the movie Benny and Joon, another Johnny Depp movie. You'll see why the comparison you made is VERY apt. Please, everyone, throw some likes behind this and get our guy to watch this one!
Benny and joon is good movie!
The end credits scenes aren't major things, they're just a small little bonus bit. The first one's end credit scene hints that Barbossa could come back, and shows how the monkey is still a zombie.
I wouldn't call the At World End's stinger "not a major thing"!
@@NoriMori1992 stinger?
Оскар, я так рада что нашла твой канал❤ Ты такой искренний и уютный😊 Радуюсь любому видео что выходит на канале😅
"ROSENKRANTS & GUILDASTERN ARE DEAD"IS A CLASSIC!!!! HOPE YOU'VE REACTED TO IT!!🙏👍👍👍👍👍
Jack Sparrow is definitely written differently in 2 & 3 then he is in the first film
20:40 Apparently his face got ripped off by The Kraken's tentacles. Fun stuff. 🐙
Nice reaction man. And thanks for take your time and edit the audio, most of the reactors doesn't!
Who else is just hearing lonely islands song jack sparrow every time jacks doing his antics 😂
Thallassophobia; fear of the deep blue sea. Sincerely a fellow phobic 😁
I thought that was just being a normal human being. Being afraid of the sea is not irrational.
i think the point of Barbosa coming back is that you already have proof that you can bring people back from the death
it's truly a pleasure watching along with you
BILL NIGHY AS DAVY JONES IS EXCELLENT!!!!!❤
Fun fact everyone knows: Jack’s fall (and I think song) at 40:34 was unscripted…those are genuine reactions
The movies do become more jack sparrow related as it goes on but worth the watch 😊
8:00 Will seems to be a bit of a tease that way.
8:45 precious
Rum is not a whiskey, whiskey is made from grains, but rum is made from sugarcane
Been awhile my friend! Hope all is well and keep up the great work!
Absolute legend. Been pretty busy but still loving the journey ☺️👌
@@thecocoacouch Never stop! We’re with you for not just the trip, but the entire journey!
Omg never clicked so fast!! Stopped what i was doing and boom lol!! ❤
This is my favorite of the movies, as far as comedy goes. Johnny is HILARIOUS. The only scenes that ever pop in my mind from these movies are the tribal scenes and the wheel sword fighting.
The scene with the jack-kabab always makes me howl with laughter! Funniest shit ever
Oscar: Jack has friends now and he cares about them...

Lord Ravenscraft made a good video about the Liar's Dice scene, I highly recommend.
I would have changed it from I'll take my chances to My debt's been settled sir. Great reaction by the way.
If you want to better understand the Liar's Dice scene, @LordRavenscraft has a great video breaking it down move by move. It's very much worth a watch, especially the end bit.
This is my favorite of the series!
You might not notice this, but Beckett and EIC are basically the Evil Megacorp in this movie.
My family came to call any post credit scenes Screaming Monkeys due to the first movie.
I’ve never heard anyone call it “The Black Compass” that’s a really cool name
