Not to mention the Shop Owner also defended Charlie from those two adults and told them to leave Charlie alone while telling Charlie to run back home and keep the golden ticket safe.

calling the gene wilder one the original is kinda misleading. This isn't a remake of that movie, it's just another adaptation of the same book that shares only the source material
Fun fact: Roald Dahl HATED the first Willy Wonka movie. He hated it so much that he refused to have any of his other books adapted into movies while he was still alive. It was only after his death that his wife and children gave this movie the green light.
Tim Burton also went to great lengths to keep it more accurate to the novel. One was keeping Mr. Bucket alive. Others working on the film wanted him dead so that Wonka could fill the ‘father figure’ role for Charlie, but Burton said no, because… that’s not the kind of character Willy Wonka is. Though the ending of the movie is completely original, but Dahl’s family still liked it.

Actually I like the grumpy other grandpa. He's just trying to not get Charlie too excited over something almost impossible, he's conscious he already has a hard life and just don't want him to suffer. That's very sweet, but hidden behind an angry attitude. But as soon as Charlie has the ticket, he encouraged him as much as he could.
Yeah, once he realized that his grandson had a tangible chance of winning, why would you give-up that opportunity? That would be foolish

Some things: First, the oompaloompas are indeed made by one single actor, the actor had to made the scenes over and over in different possitions and different coreography and everything was put together to give all the realism to the multiple oompaloompas. In an interview the actor said that it was the hardest role of his carrer and he won't do a role like that ever again.
Second, the first time Willy Wonka crashes against the crystal door was an accident, but Jonny Depp did it again a second time to make it like it wasn't an accident. Both crashes weren't in the script.
Third and last, the fact that Willy's father had paper cuts of all of his archivements was inspired of one real life event of Tim Burton's life. He didn't have a good relation with his late mother because she didn't aprove of him becoming a movie director and spent years without speaking. One day, he got a call saying that his mother was in the last stretch of her life, so he went to visit her and he was surprised to see in her room posters of all the movies he directed.
The movie used a bunch of robots too for the wide shots of the Oompa Loompas working.

One thing to remember about Tim Burton is that he started out as a young Disney employee and HATED the experience. So he gets little moments of revenge by taking the piss out of the sickly-sweet Disney style, as with that puppet musical display he then set ablaze.
I can see that now. And he didn't stop there!

This. That's why the puppet musical is kind of a perverted take on "It's a Small World'. I'm a Disney fan and I loved it..

A lot of people didn't like this movie because they kept comparing it to Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory with Gene Wilder. But what most people don't know is that the original was looked down upon because is had a lot changed between the book and the movie, where this movie is more correct with the book.
I really like Depp's performance and Tim Burton's version.
Not to mention that it was basically an over hyped candy commercial for the line of Wonka Candy by Nestle

Even roald dahl (the book author) hated the original movie. It was a box office dud, he didn't like gene and the whole movie was just made to sell chocolate. Dahl called it a crummy film and his estate has said he would have much preferred this version.
Not to mention the fact that they changed his script so much that it was absolutely unrecognizable.

This is actually a reference to director Tim Burton's own life. His mother and him had a major falling out when he was younger because he wanted to pursue film. She came down with a terminal illness and he went to visit her one last time. He saw that she had cut out and clipped all the newspaper articles that talked about his films and she had saved the ticket stubs of all his movies she had gone to see.
I worked at the Roald Dahl Museum and they said that Dahl family said that he would have loved this verison since to was accrate to the book. In the museum they have the Wonka gates and Willy Wonka's outfit. Also the actor Deep Roy who played the Oompa Loompa did every single Oompa Loompa part and they had really squirrels.
The squirrels were real but when they were attacking Veruca it was a mixture of trained but mostly photorealistic CGI squirrels while a stunt double was used in some places of the actress who played Veruca since she didn’t want to get bitten and scratched by the squirrels.🐿️

@@MontgomeryWenis That too but the Animatronic Squirrels were only utilized in the nut cracking scenes alongside the real Squirrels and CG squirrels.
But the scene when the squirrels began attacking Veruca and dumping her in the Garbage shoot were a mix of real and CG squirrels.
The only thing I didn't like about the remake was how American it was but it doesn't really take much from the story itself so it's still up there with my favourite films.

This was the version I grew up with, and it’s my favorite! Roald Dahl’s widow has stated that he would have loved this movie (he famously despised the classic 70s version starring Gene Wilder)
Felicity Dahl was involved in the production and gave the family's blessing.
That's why I prefer this version over the 70s version.
I love the line "You're all quite short, aren't you?" because Willy genuinely meant short tempered because of their attitudes, but because they're children they didn't understand and he just went with it.
Music by Danny Elfman, who frequently collabs with Tim Burton ;)
Oh and idk if you noticed, but Charlie's mother was played by Helena Bonham-Carter, aka Bellatrix LaStrange. She dated Burton for many years and appeared in a lot of his movies.
At 8.25, when you said 'the best way is to have a bunch of employees that looks for it', I was like, 'oh boy he's in for a pleasant surprise' 😂 This movie is actually the most faithful adaptation of Roald Dahl's book, the lyrics to the songs and the name of creatures like 'Snozzwangers' is totally accurate. I can't tell you how many times me and my mates quoted this film when we were kids, it was the best experience seeing it in cinemas in 2005.
Yes yes yes. All the songs were Mr Dahl himself. Mr Elfman simply provided the excellent music.

I know there are always people who will prefer the older movie, but to me this is the superior version. And that doesn’t just come from my Johnny Depp bias 😅 story accuracy, visuals…just better overall!
Did you know the old movie actually wasn't that accurate to the book that even the original Arthor didn't like how they portrayed it but the movie still became iconic and successful even when it didn't adapt the story well but Charlie and the chocolate actually adapted to the books much more better and accurately the author liked the movie

First time, it was a shock. But on reflection, the new movie is better.
New over old, Gene Over Johnny. In my opinion. Controversial, I'm sure. But I also would say OS Startrek over NG, but Picard over Kirk. Nothing in life is perfect.
I grew up with this film without knowing that there was an older version... 😂 I imagine nostalgia plays a big part in audience preference
It took me ages to understand the father's house being moved. It's actually a metaphor. So the physical place never moved, but it's more to do with the emotions of not being welcomed home/isolated from his father so much that it feels like he could be in the middle of nowhere in Siberia and it would be just as far

Gonna go off on a whim, but out of the two Chocolate Factory films, this is my preferred one:
- More book accurate
- Better, more complete ending
- More interesting characterisation, especially the rotten kids (the original characters were really basic and flat)
- Mr Bucket exists (and this raises the stakes when he loses his job)
- Better grandparents (other 3 in the original might as well not have been in the movie)
- Buckets actually feel like a tight-knit family
- Great, high production value, making use of the 2005 tech
- Excellent cinematography (compared to the dull execution of the first movie)
- Cool, grungy atmosphere
- Superb, outstanding sets
- Varied and catchy music (not the same copy-paste template)
- Wonka’s backstory
- Dahl hated the original movie (even said it was too sappy and saccharine)
- Crazy attention to detail (like Wonka’s pale skin and awkwardness from not going outside, the linguistically accurate Wonka bars, Augustus’s bars even have German writing, Violet’s panic chewing, Charlie savouring his food and wrappers etc.)
- Was clearly a passion project instead of a commercial pretending to be a movie
- Poetic in some areas (Charlie and Wonka parallels, Mike calling the Oompa Loompas “little freaks”, camera focused on Augustus when Wonka said not to get overexcited, followed by him dropping and stepping on his chocolate, Violet’s mother’s karma when she mocked Augustus fitting through the pipe etc.)
- Better at showing instead of telling, like flashbacks and small facial expressions and cues

I too agree. I also love that they actually show that happens to the 4 kids later. I had always wondered in the original movie if the kids were actually ok or if they had actually died. I always wonder why so many more people are into the original movie more than tim Burton’s. Probably because of gene wilder, but I’m not so into the original story. I hate joe and Charlie so much in the original. The only great thing in the movie was gene wilder. The other actors did terrible. U really get to feel more and really hate the kids in Burton’s version. And I love gene wilder’s job as playing wonka just as much as I love Johnny depp playing wonka and both actors did a perfect job.
They used actual trained squirrels for the scene with Veruca except for a few moments, but the majority of the scene was real squirrels. I never knew that til I saw a BTS years later and I was so impressed that they managed that.
Willy Wonka can make ICE CREAM that won't melt on a hot day but can't make a chocolate castle that can do the same lol.
That's a really good point. :D I bet he COULD make chocolate that won't melt, but in this case chose not to, for the laugh!

One thing that really makes me realize how much time has passed... It's seeing how much freddie highmore has grown into adult since this movie and finding neverland.
I've always liked Freddie's movies as a child actor. I didn't see many more movies with his name and assumed maybe he stopped acting, only to then watch the Bates Motel which is honestly one of Freddie's best roles I have ever seen.

I read that this Wonka was actually inspired by Renato Zero, an Italian singer that Tim Burton apparently likes.
If you look him up, you'll recognise the haircut and the glasses, but Renato Zero is an oddball too (first crossdressing singer in Italy, singing about threesomes, motels, etc)
The old lady who you love is called Liz Smith, was an absolute icon in British comedy. Sadly she passed away, but she starred in one of my favourite 90s shows called The Vicar of Dibley

This film along with _Two Brothers_ and _Finding Neverland_ were my introduction to Freddie Highmore and grateful he still has an acting career after starting out as a child actor.

This is the most accurate portrayal of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, particularly Willy Wonka himself - spot on. The only complaint I have with it is that they didn't leave it open for the sequel, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator.
I don't think it needs a sequel.
Danny Elfman's score for this film is the whole reason I got into music in the first place, and I'm now in college majoring in film and game music, so I have some major nostalgia for this film

I know this film is a mixed bag for certain folks especially those who prefer _Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory_ like the Nostalgia Critic, but personally I say I enjoy _Charlie and the Chocolate Factory_ as much as _Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory_ thanks to the production design of the Candy Room, the performances of the child actors especially Freddie Highmore as Charlie, the musical score of Danny Elfman and that it was very close to the original book by Roald Dahl.
Also, the only Golden Ticket Winners from the film that are still acting following this film are Freddie Highmore (Charlie), AnnaSophia Robb (Violet) and surprisingly Jordan Fry (Mike Teavee), Jordan briefly retired/quit acting in the early 2010’s by going to High School but eventually resumed doing acting in the film, "Big Life" in 2023. Philip Wiegratz (Augustus) and Julia Winter (Veruca) are currently the only ones who retired from acting with the former’s last acting role in 2013 and the latter stopped acting completely after she played Veruca in this film apparently going the same route Peter Ostrum (the original Charlie from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory) went through.
Hopefully you’ll react to _Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory_ and especially _Wonka_ along with reacting to _The Witches, James and the Giant Peach, Fantastic Mr. Fox_ and _Matilda_

@@strawberrysoulforever8336 It is and much like Peter Ostrum, Julia retired from acting completely following this film to have a normal life going to school and became a doctor afterwards, similar to Peter albeit Peter became more of an Animal doctor (Veterinarian) for Horses and Cows until 2023.

In this movie he is certainly more Dooku-ish in looks, but LotR came out when I was very young; I'd say if I were much older I'd be able to pick up the vocals of Saruman through Christopher Lee's performance over his similar Dooku appearance huehue.

I've seen this movie a million times and it's one of my favorite adaptations of the book I never noticed however that Augustus Gloop how did no eyebrows and now I can't unsee it and I can't stop laughing. Side note I always believed that Grandpa Joe was not really sick he was just taking advantage of his own family and all the grandparents were playing footsies under the covers 😅😂
Oh wow (if that were true about Grandpa Joe just taking advantage), BUT at the same time, that would be a VERY undesirable way to get out of doing stuff because... if I personally don't get exercise or go for a very long walk once in a while, I get VERY restless lol. Probably because it's healthier to move around :P

I love that you reacted to this one - it's my favorite version! I grew up with the 1970s one, but I read the book right before this one came out and was so pleased that the movie followed it so well. I love that they kept the "Mumbler!" bit in the movies - it’s something I remember from the book and my mom and I still quote it to each other to this day. 😆

- Johnny Depp convinced everybody to cast Freddie Highmore to play Charlie cause he knew how good he was from a movie they did together in the past, NEVERLAND, you have to watch it, a huge dramatic performance from Highmore, he was a tiny thing winth the best drama ever,.
The movie describes the life of Barrie, creator of Peter Pan. Kate Winslet in it too. I love her.

Deep Roy is the man who played every oompa loompa, he done that much extensive filming for every scene his pay was raised to $1 Million to show recognition of his work 😊

Deep Roy was amazing in this, and then the editors making like 100’s of him in different costumes and making it into dance numbers and the whole TV sequence, that must have taken immense much effort! Kudos to everyone involved!

I agree- I myself LOVE both versions; they are so different from each other, but that's one reason I really like both equally in their own way. I'd seen the older one first, and when I saw a newer version came out, I was quite pessimistic about how much I'd like it, just because I've seen so many disappointing "remakes" in general. But what "saved" this "remake" for me was how they put enough quality differences for it to seem like almost a totally different movie. My impressions of the two are: This newer one = Creepy, weird, but quite cool (like many of the songs)
Older one = Magical, innocent, comforting / feel-good

I unironically listen to "A Rather Different Set of Friends" often.
This was one of my favorites, I never thought about this, but each of the places that he took the kids to seemed designed to test each one, to see if they could grow past the spoiled and rotten attitudes. but unlike thee other kids, Charlie had the opposite of wonka's family, and he wasn't spoiled or had a bad attitude. He was just excited to be there.

I prefer this version over the first adaptation. I do love Gene Wilder but that adaptation was a mess; so much so that Roald Dahl basically disowned it. They even changed the title to "Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory". This version is far more accurate to the original material. I felt they had a greater respect for the author and his creation.
Got to see this in theaters in 2005. I learned that Roald Dahl's wife and daughter oversaw the production of this film which is why it is more accurate to the book. The ending between Wonka and his father is a tribute to Tim Burton and his mom. She kept posters for all his movies. Also the weird fact is the Gene Wilder version used real chocolate but looked fake whereas this version used fake chocolate but looks real. And Danny Elfman did all the vocals of the Oompa Loompas. Anyway glad you reacted to this one!
As far as I understand it, if the teleporter uses a big screen the people/items would remain the original size or could even be bigger. Right?

Haha. Reminds me of how I "sort of trained" a squirrel (in a park that often likely frequently got treats from humans) to climb up my arm to get a nut :P

It's so wonderfully kooky, and so different from the Gene Wilder one. I agree that there was a undertone the sinister to Wonka in this.

This is one of my favorite Tim Burton movies. But mostly enjoyed that it's one of his more colorful works such as Big Fish. Plus how it brought the whimsy of Roald Dahl's book to life. But I loved seeing your reaction. Seeing your inner child come out through the reaction was the sweetest. Full of surprise and wonder. Freddie Highmore's portrayal of Charlie was so sweet, found him more kind and humble than the original.
The fact Wonka says that Cannibalism is frowned upon in *most* societies implies he's met a society where it *isn't.* The only other society he's met - The Oompa Loompas, implying cannibalism is something they do, in fact, partake in if they can't get enough cocoa beans.
And, interesting fact for you, the actor playing the Oompa Loompas is *one* actor and they just filmed him doing various things and then inserted him into the scenes.

@@fosterbennington6405 LOL good point, he said it like he "knew for a fact too" :P On a grim note... some legitimate reasons could vary from eating too much meat (like, I've heard predators like big cats don't taste good either) ... OR even more likely, taking too many medications. Humans overall are on WAY too many synthetic medicines (and also chemicals that shouldn't be in non-organic food about 96% of us eat every day).

Despite the most recent Wonka movie, there's not actually supposed to be magic. Wonka is just a mad genius who operates by a logic that only makes sense to imaginative children. Kind of like Alice in Wonderland.
Also, while it is not directly in the book, this movie draws out a lot of the between the lines that were Dahl's intentions. Wonka despises naughty children and the parents who ruin them (in this movie, it is because of his own father and his relationship). There are theories that he scouted all the children ahead of time and made sure that it would end up with them. Charlie was his goal because he wanted to 'adopt' the impoverished boy, not realizing that someone could be happy with their family and refuse. And the ten dollar note that Charlie found? Wonka planted it. The others were just nasty children whose weaknesses he planted so they would drop out and Charlie would seem like a fair winner. At the same time, he freed the kids from their parents- Violet is happy with her achievements as a flexible person but her mother can no longer live through her. Augustus is disgusted by chocolate and will become healthy weight. Veruca's father now says no to her. Mike has been scarred by the reality within the TV he is obsessed with and will think twice about squishing little video game characters for fun. Hopefully he will also take up basketball.

If you are wondering why the Augustus Gloop song wasn't clear about what was going to happen, that's mostly because it abridged Roald Dahl's original lyrics, making it MUCH shorter, so there was a lot of detail left out. The others also cut out a lot of the lyrics, but they all kept essential parts of the lyrics. It's a good thing, too, because the song about Mike was mostly a rant and the message is "Throw out your TV and read books instead", only bringing in Mike at the end (all the lyrics relating to him were included here). Violet's original song was actually an allegory about a woman who chewed gum all the time, even when she was asleep, and ended up biting her own tongue off. Veruca's song listed a lot of other disgusting pieces of rubbish and then added a bit of extra context about how not all of the blame should fall on her because her parents made her what she was.

It's so crazy to know that the same actor who played Charlie's mom in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is the same actor who played Bellatrix in Harry Potter.

The songs in this version of the movie are taken directly from Roald Dahl's book which I appreciate, and the overall story (except for the daddy psychology) is closer to the book. Songs in the '70s movie are not, but surprisingly they are my favorite part of that film, other than Gene Wilder as Wonka that is... ❤

oh my goodness, my sibling and i have been quoting this movie constantly for years, it's so quotable 😂 i do think overall the original movie is the better willy wonka film, but there are many aspects of this one i love too! honestly i wish i could mash aspects of both of them together. i love freddie highmore as charlie, and gene wilder as wonka, i love the songs and oompa loompas of the original, but i love the humor of this film (which to be fair i think is the kind of humor only johnny depp could really pull off with his fantastic delivery). but anyway, it's always fun to watch people react to this one, it's so outlandish lol. would love to see you react to the original as well, even if it's not technically your first time watching :D

Pleasantly surprised to find so many people who like this better than the the Gene WIlder version (of which Gene Wilder is the only part I like). As with all of you who appreciate this one, the recognition of this being much more faithful to the source material and thus having the blessing of the Dahl estate means a lot to me, since I grew up with a much greater attachment to the book than I ever had to the 70s film. And I can forgive the addition of the dentist backstory, since CHristopher Lee elevates everything!
I forgot the third act and shed a tear at Wonka and his dad's reunion.
I have loved Gene Wilder in everything he's done... I just never liked the musical from the early 70's. and I'm all for the way Johnny Depp played the character and the production of this one. and the ONE actor who played all the Oompa Loompas!
I'll be frank: this movie's aesthetic isn't my favorite and the acting choices for Wonka make me uncomfy about 80% of the time (I don't find awkwardness funny very often) but there are some really good things to adore with this version, especially with the performances of the Bucket family. I'm now wondering what it would have looked like if they made the sequel into a movie, but I don't think many people know about the second Wonka Book (the series is technically unfinished as there was only 1 chapter of the 3rd book written)
I have a head canon where Willy Wonka’s dad left to let him live his life. Like he knew he wouldn’t be happy with him so he let him find his own way. In a roundabout way it’s kind of sweet. lol!
If you like Freddie Highmore as an actor I recommend watching The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008). A very underrated fantasy adventure.
I feel Augustus and Veruca got off easy. They were filthy/covered in chocolate and that's basically it.
But Violet and Mike are altered for probably life 0_0 (Mike would make one hell of a basket ball player XD)

I love this movie but contrary to all things making sense and that you mentioned, what drives me crazy is the biggest issue is THE DAD ABANDONING HIS CHILD and how that is never adressed. The subject is treated like it was Wonka’s fault but Wonka never run away from home he just went to museum to cheer himself up 😭 That’s INSANE and the only explanation I have with that is Willy actually having serious mental health issues and so his memories are not trustworthy and part of his semi-delusion (like the house teleporting away etc). Plus the dad (excellent Sir Christopher Lee) isn’t even shameful or apologizing for that he just looks sorry like he lost contact with his son accidentally. The fact he has a picture of Willy older without his dentistery stuff is also super suspicious 😳 WW is just insane lol
Those squirrels are real. A team of trainers spent 19 weeks training 40 rescue squirrels for that scene.
Although their were shots of the squirrels that were completely CGI such as the scene when they were attacking Veruca.
In fact, the scene required a stunt actress to play Veruca being attacked by the squirrels since they didn’t want the actual actress getting hurt and scratched by the squirrels.
