What would happen if an Illithid Ulithard would become an Arcanist and then choosen to become an Elderbrain, would it start an outcast colony of only Illithid Arcanists and make a completely new sub race of Illithids?
This actually would be an amazing plot about an Illithid civil war or something
Also what would happen if an Illithid would achieve Godhood? No mater the method, if it's killing a God and taking their devine spark, getting ascended by another Deity or gathering enough worshipers

I had this same idea! Another note would be if the arcanist Elder Brain planned to use the added 'authority' to elevate itself above other Elder Brains. Ilithids feed on the brains of humanoids and Elder Brains feed on the minds of Ilithids, so pursuing the ability to feed on Elder Brains seems like a natural progression for their disposition.
Also, would it pursue its own unique form of lichdom like an Ilithilich? Would it allow its minions to pursue undeath? If so, is it because it found a way to 'feed' off them even without their sacrifice?
Imaging a super lich that coordinates its minion ilithiliches like its own limbs, seeing through all their eyes and commanding them telepathically. Can pull psionic power and spell slots from each minion to boost itself, if the adventuring party left any alive on the way to it. A figure of true "Domination".
@@Watcher40K9 Considering an Elderbrain can already acert control over a regular Illithid withe it's super powerful psionic abilities, if it combines it withe magic it could probably use all Illithids and slaves they have as it's own extentions like a hive mind similar to the one of the Tyranids in Warhammer 40k where every memeber is their own collective being and has a consciousness withe a mind of their own but they all stand under the control of this singular hyper intelligence that controls them all and uses them like an extention of itself
I would also assume that all kinds of knowledge and magic is a goal of pursuit for this colony so there would be different houses almost, each of them focusing on a different kind of magic from necromancy to demonology or astral arts all for the goal to gather as much knowledge as possible to become the most power Illithid colony in existence, maybe even reaching a form of Godhood or advanced consciousness to become the pinnacle of evolution and reaching a new form of existence in the pursuit of ultimate enlightenment
First off, according to lore (this is all up for grabs in your game, though), an ulitharid that even had a wet dream about being a wizard would be killed immediately, because the elder brain would know. Occasionally, plain old flayers learning wizardry is tolerated with harsh stigma. The collective is always wondering when they're gonna have to kill them, and even if that day never comes, they won't be welcome into the collective after they die naturally. An ulitharid turning arcanist would be the worst possible course of events an elder brain could imagine

Guy in my group made a Mind Flayer paladin. It's actually pretty cool he uses a helm of illusion that he makes his character look like a elf, the party knows full well he's not but the npc can't beat the check bc dm doesn't want him being hunted by the city.
I had one do something similar but I allowed magic users to sense something off about him. And those with magic sight could see him. He was cruising along fine until the party ran into a paladin of Tyr who was blinded and granted divine sight. The resulting clash ended up in flight from Neverwinter and from that point on worrying about hunting parties, bounty hunters, and actively avoiding getting too close to druids in the woods, clerics in towns, and wizards that might be strong enough to perceive his true form.
@thegrim418 oh the dm made the check for the helmet DC 30 so not many were able to see through it, until we got to the Elder Brain which coincidentally was the same colony his character came from. After we slayed it his paladin managed to take over the colony by offering them the prisoners from the city above them as "servants" and sacrifices to feed the colony. It's kinda funny bc now any time that dm uses that campaign for others incorporates the paladin and peaceful mind flayer colony.

@thegrim418 it was, probably the best campaign I've ever been in happened a couple years ago, I decided to make a necromancer and thanks to a lot of high rolls he became the mayor of the city and the rest of the party ended up as city council. We used an undead horde as city guard, and by the end of the campaign the city loved our group, at least until the turrasc attacked, but luckily 2 of our party members had rings of wish. 1 wish killed the turrasc and the second turned its body into a mobile city. DM still uses it for new players, the city now has a skeleton on city council.
In my friend’s setting, the Illithid have a singular superstition that if ever one of them takes up the path of a Paladin, that Paladin will be the doom of all Illithid. Like hunt down every last one and then end himself sort of doom for them.
I remember the first time I interacted with an alhoon in a campaign.

A “coven” or whole college of mindflayer arcanists, joined together by their lust for arcane knowledge. They may even have their own elder brain infused with arcane runes and knowledge. The brine is even infused with arcane energy that amplifies its psionic ability.

@The Awkward Potato technically and thankfully I'm not a forever dm as of earlier this year. But to answer your question yes, more specifically one who's already made 5e stats for tzakandi(and a psionic captain variant), brain and nyralla golems, and more
They could run a magic college and one of the secrets of the college is that the memories of the students are added to the collective artificial elder brain that they have created
@brookejon3695 I gave my DM the terrible idea of an alhoon-owned student loan corporation with extortionate interest rates. The logic being if you're smart enough to get the money to keep them away, you might eventually produce smarter children who will end up in the same trap. Some of them won't be able to pay, in which case you have a free-range gourmet meal that you can bribe the authorities not to look for.
There is Ilsensine, God of Mindflayers and Psionics, there was another Mindflayer God but he either got eaten by Ilsensine or fled to another planet and exists as a divine ghost essentially.

No. You can become a mindflayer anyway. If there was a race the game would be completely different. I've played so much I've been modding it for weeks and use a fallen angel class it's fun.

A mindflayer arcanist is probably my favorite idea for an enemy in campaigns I DM for. The fusion of magic and psionics is really cool to me and I can have the players hired by an elder brain to kill the arcanist who plans to take revenge on the colony. It can make for a really cool story either help the arcanist destroy the colony and maybe die or kill the arcanist and be left alone by the colony

@@a.g.m8790 Sure. Technically being a mindflayer is sort of like an infection. A channel called pointy hat I think has a video about this sort of thing that was real interesting along the lines of a player who is turning into a mind flayer and the more they use the psionics the more they turn. But if you wanna just be a mind flayer I say plus 2 to int and 1 to dex innate spell casting as psionics using your Int and the mind blast action once a day.
Not Marvel, but could you cover a D&D creature that is symbiotic with player characters?

If a god convinced a colony of mind flayers that they’re a divinely powerful elder brain that is above all other elder brains, would those mind flayers begin to practice divine magic?

Pretty sure the taboo of spells was put in to keep an entire colony of flayers from gaining arcane level skills because one of their number studied hard and died, which would have given his memories to the collective.

Hm… now I’m curious what would happen if an Ulitharid studied arcana before becoming an Elder Brain. If it’s the Elder Brain in charge, it chooses whether or not to forbid the study of magic, and it’s an Ulitharid so it’ll already be ostracized from its colony anyway.

In a sense. Yes
They're called "Alhoons".
But instead of consuming a soul to stay on top, they consume a person's lifespan to extend their own.
Eat a human, you get how many years he had left. Eat a juvenile elf and the Alhoon can get an extra 5 to 7 centuries.
There are a lot of ways that arcane magic can extend mortal life, but mostly they turn themselves into alhoons/illithiliches. They are different from regular liches, but the fundamentals are still there (arcane magic, combined with undead immortality). I don't believe they have phylacteries, but other than that, a bit of psionic ability and the tentacles, they're liches.

Me who made a character that became homebrew rework of a forgot class from a previous edition with the end goal of granting immortality to all including the elder brains and achieving the most perfect for as their physical form would be nothing more then a vessel

Currently playing a Mind flayer arcanist in a campaign with my friends
They basically fucked up during his ceramorphisis and he became resistant to the elder brains control but as a result has far weaker psionic abilities than the other illithids
the elder brain had mercy on what he saw as a worthless defect and sent him to exile rather than have him killed .
He learned arcane magic to make up for his lack of psionic powers and became a wondering mercenary who never shows his face.
Currently him and the party have been hired to hunt down and rescue a god wizard who went missing and my character is hoping he can use the reward money to fund his schemes to overthrow the elder brains

Objection - Illithids DO, or at least did in AD&D2, have a God: Ilsensine the Unending, a literal maze made of brain matter. Ilsensine is, for all intents and purposes, neutral with neutral evil tendencies, as it's possibly the second most powerful mind in the omniverse (the first being Large Luigi, the beholder bartender on the Rock of Bral), but can't communicate directly with anyone, because anyone entering its interior is driven insane by the accumulated knowledge being forced inside his brain.
Ilsensine rarely contacts its followers for obvious reasons, but it DOES have clerics, particularly on the Nautiloid ships; illithid clerics double up as power sources for Nautiloid helms.
