I remember journeying to the Illithid colony in "Neverwinter Nights Hordes of the Underdark". Then i forgot to wear my special helmet then i was stunned and brought to their Elder Brain. Since i was a barbarian i lost to its influence and was lost to the hallucination as it ate my brain.
The history from The Lords of Madness has an opposite scenario- the Illithid Empire existing at the very end of History and escaping their destruction by sending their seed-colony back to only a few centuries before current game time; it means the Illithid are their own progenitors in a time loop and that the preeminent Elder Evils, The Aboleth, have zero knowledge about these newcomers; which both fascinates and terrifies them (if such things are terrified).
Githzerai and mindflayers never teamed up??? Idk where you got that, but from what I’ve read all three are at war but githyanki and githzerai will team up if they end up fighting the same ghaik, mind flayers, otherwise they till fight each other. Bot gith factions hate ghaik but one is more determined on the war effort where their society has broken down into a war culture based on endless warfare with the ghaik till extinction.
Well if the gith are correct and the entire illithid colony shot themselves into the future... the illithid could appear at any moment on the surface to save you the trip! They are so thoughtful like that :)
