One thing that I started packing to help keep the meat clean and give me a better working space is a ground tarp. It's a super lightweight like tent rainfly material. 5ft x5 ft. Pretty light and packs the size of a baseball. I actually have a pocket in the bottom of my pack where it packs away really tightly. I never even know it's there.
Sir, this is an EXTREMELY helpful video, thank you! Most of my hunting spots on public land are a LONG way from my truck, and packing out allows me to hunt some very remote areas. Your video answered several really important questions for me. THANK YOU!
This is awesome actually having videos that go step by step. I never got to go hunting much until I was able to buy my own firearms. I was able to close off 2022 rifle season with 2 doe and lucky I had someone help show me how to clean a deer. I will definitely be using this method by myself this 2023 season. Great video. God Bless From Oklahoma
Great video, I live in Alaska and I’m over dragging deer. After dragging a buck 2.5 miles uphill back to the super cub I’m quartering for now on. Thanks for the help! Loins!!
Highly suggest removing the tarsal glands from the hind quarters before placing it into your game bag to prevent spoiling your meat. It is very easy for the gland to taint the meat even when inside a game bag while back packing it out with all the jostling going on.
I do the same process. I also debone the hind quarter and knuckle out the front legs before packing out. Great video and you explained the process very well.
The Bearded Butchers have an excellent video on skinning a deer and show a great way you can pop the lower legs off without cutting through the leg with a saw.
Me and my buddy got 3 yesterday, it really hit us hard realizing that we simply can't keep dragging deer out of the swamp , we're too old now and it is what it is. I'm still dead from the effort, took the day off work because I can't move lol! Next deer, we're doing this, even if we're there an hour or two after dark taking the time to do so. Time to get with the times.
Good tip for you to try, is to carry a small 6X6 piece of Tyvek with you and you can put the deer on it to help keep the meat off the ground and keeps it cleaner. Sharp knife would help too. lol
Great video I've been packing meet out for a long time and now I bought a super cheap light leg spliter and a 500lbs locking block an tackle together they only weight 2lbs. It works great but it does add weight. To me it's worth it and I think it speeds me up
Check out Pa. Game commision video on how to debone the deer in the field and pack out meat only leaving the bones and hide for the coyotes, You have about 40 lb of meat to carry out.+Pa requires you bring the head out. This is the way to go
Cool vid, thanks for posting. He was probably trying to hurry for the sake of the video, but dagum I could see that dudes knife getting more and more dull the more bone he hit with it. 😂
You should be able to just pull the hide off I’ve only done one deer personally like this but it’s easy. I did have a guy do one for me which is were I learned how to do it. If there was a deer skinning and quartering on the ground contest he would blow the competition away. He skinned, quartered, and hade the meat packed in about 5 minutes.
Good video and info but i didnt see the license attatched anywhere i kept saying wait in my head lol. I dont knie the hunting laws in that state either though 😂
In Alabama there is no physical tag to attach to a deer. It’s checked in on the game app. Of course if you lived in a state with physical tags you’d attach it to the deer. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video. Lot of people say that not letting a deer hang will affect the taste - is this ever an issue for you? Do you do anything to the meat before putting it in the freezer? Got no place to hang a deer in my apartment so I was planning on quartering in the field and packing out as well.
Debone, package and let it sit in the fridge for a few days before freezing. Same concept as letting it hang before processing. Essentially you are just aging the meat.
Very carefully go between the 3rd and 4th ribs. Pull them apart slightly and reach inside. You'll be working with a knife blind so be extremely careful when you cut them out.
once the quarters are all removed, i don't see what the big deal would be, with then cutting into the cavity. it would be so easy then, with all the hide and quarters out of the way. are people scared of the guts or something?
John M Gibby I think it would be possible, but my guess is that you’d have to at least cut the skin on the bottom side of the leg so it’s not keeping the joint from popping. Another option is to just skin the leg, then when you go to remove the leg you can actually cut that joint pretty easily without popping it first...hopefully we will have another deer to quarter out this weekend and we can do that method in a video!
tom luker your cutting probably more than half the weight by doing it this way. I’ll put it this way... if you kill a 130lb doe and gut her, your looking at dragging roughly 100 or so pounds. If you quarter it and take just the meat, you’ll probably only be coming out of the woods with 35-40lbs
@@thesouthernoutdoorsmen as well as carrying the weight, as opposed to dragging it. that 100 deer being dragged is even a heavier pull, due to the resistance.
Great video y'all. I understand you were kinda hurrying in the video. When your in the woods on your own you tend to take alittle more time and as much of the meat as you can. When your making a how to video you gotta move along a little faster. Folks need to understand that. You do a get job! Oh by the way, tell the green horns out there not to use scented garbage bags. Lol
depends on your state. Mine doesn't require sex. check-in your harvest on the state DNR app or phone number, get confirmation number and you're good to go. If yours does require sex, take the head with you or sex organs attatched to the hide.
Yes anyone can hunt it but you have to abide by your local regs! For instance...its dove season here in Alabama but my local WMA only allows hunting on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Your best resource will be to find your states DNR or Fish & Game website. When you look it up Id be careful to NOT use the website "eregulations"...they get most regs right but I have seen them be blatantly wrong about some things.
The Southern Outdoorsmen I’m in north west Georgia. So I imagine it’s close to y’alls guidelines. And I guess you just have to worry about people walking through while your hunting?

agree. same as with tags and licences. we used to have to carry a paper booklet around, that had pages for species and then you attached a purchased sticker to make the page a valid tag. then, when you harvested an animal, you had to cut out notches on the edges of the page for the region, the day, month, and buck or doe. now, they've changed it, and we have individual card-sized pieces of paper for each species, and that's your tag. and it's the same for cancelling upon harvest. what i've always found stupid, is both our hunting and fishing licences are paper. our fishing licence is an actual full-sized 8x10 piece of paper that is printed out. and that must always be on your possession. a big piece of PAPER, while fishing, on WATER. beyond ridiculous and mind-boggling that they haven't found a way to get with the modern times and digital-age.

I only save the backstraps & tender loins, EVERYTHING else goes through the grinder for me. We eat alot of burger & sausage in different dishes.

Awesome demonstration
the front leg can be cut below the joint about 2 inches then you can snap it off
Isn’t is easier to go around the back leg at the knuckle before you skin it down that far? Then you can just skin it to that point and it’ll pull off?
What model KUIU pack are you working with? Do you like it?
How do u get the heart & liver from your no gut method?
