I look forward to your take on doors, everyone seems to have a door episode at the moment.
Big thanks to Mrs Mac (as always) she's a diamond!
Yup, nightmare. Been quoted a 7 month lead time by one company!
@@GosforthHandyman I need a new back door (the veneer has been peeling since I moved in as it gets all the weather) but the quotes are utterly mental without any fitting, so all these door videos are making me wonder if I can make one myself 🙃
& The front door doesn't fit that great either. So any tips and advice greatly appreciated. My credit card has just had a huge hit due to oil tank filling and fence replacement (age & storm) so anything to save some pennies
@@GosforthHandyman for the new house painters said to wait until after summer 2022. So I asked the contractor and he arranged one and it's done already. The new kitchen is ready next week but if I want to have it fitted I have to wait until June. That's something I will be doing myself. Laying hard wood floor planks they quoted me on an hour per square meter. I will be doing those myself too. Just glue them onto the dry (!) cement floor.
Secret door? Batcave style :-)
You are a tenacious, talented champion, and lovely bloke! Thank you for sharing.
Oh well done to you both!! I must say you both work so so well together!!
You deserve a medal...or sectioning! Great video - thanks!
wow Mrs Mac is a great help to you she seems to put her hands to anything and no fear of highs well done to you both,we had no electric after the storm for seven and half days
Oh no! We had relatives without power for several days. Loads of big trees completely uprooted!
I enjoy you channels videos. Gotta love the help from a loved one. It make the end product so much more fullfulling.
Too right! Cheers Brad!
I'm happy for your melon! I hanging on to see the garden finished.
That'll be a little while but we want to start planting soon! 😁
A handyman who built an extension in the North East in winter went for a brain scan. They couldn’t find it! Seriously, your videos are so interesting, Andy. I was brought up over the hill from you so I feel close to home 🌞
Cheers Ray! A summer building project would be a walk in the park after this. 😂
I've followed all of your renovation projects but this is by far my favourite! The suspense does kill me though week in week out 😂 It is worth it though seeing everything as it happens. Spring is on the horizon, let's hope that doesn't mean more rain!
It's been quite dry(ish) the last few weeks but I've jinxed it now. 😂
@@GosforthHandyman if you got a pound for everytime you said the word 'rain' in your videos you'd be quids in 😂💰
Heroic effort in those weather conditions to get it all done prior to the roofer arriving. Good teamwork.👍
Cheers! No fun working with frozen wood. 😂
Phew! I felt your pain. We had very similar issues with our extension only in reverse. Our roof went up in a ferocious heatwave, very hot and the wood completely dried out. It's been six years now and the roof still groans when its wet. Absolutely kudos for persevering in terrible weather, I'm fascinated to see how this turns out.
Cheers bud! Yeah, it's been a challenge!
Who needs a bedroom when you can get a garage/workshop with high vaulted ceilings! It even includes a balcony!
Too right! I suggested that to Mrs Mac but she wasn't too happy. 🙄
@@GosforthHandyman 😂
Fantastic progress Andy. I find even at 20 mins these vids aren't long enough. Glad they're coming out quicker now!
Cheers! Lots to come!
You guys are doing super well despite the crappy weather. It's looking great.
Cheers bud!
Looking great. Brilliant work and thanks for sharing this with us take care
No worries!
So glad to see you didn't suffer under Arwen too much. Just be glad it wasn't Galadriel.
We got off lightly! Worst winds we've had up here for about 30 years. 😬
Well done Mrs Mac top lady 👍🏼👍🏼
Oh you tease! Amazing effort and such stress - it'll be worth it I'm sure!
😂👍
Good choice with the nail gun mate and perfect outcome as usual, top craftsmanship 👌
Cheers bud! Yeah, wish I'd gone for the 1890 in the first place - would have saved myself a lot of pain. 😂
When you've been working out in the cold and damp, there's nothing like a wood stove to get the chill out of your bones! Central heating is nice, but in the winter every house needs a hot spot. When I was a kid, we had a gravity hot air furnace, and our hot spot was the big floor register next to the kitchen. I'd stand on it when I came in after playing out in the snow, and it was a good place for wet mittens and boots to dry out!
Too right Bob! Makes such a difference. 👍🔥
Interesting to see how you have supported the roof off of the IG lintels. Not sure if your engineer agreed this but these types of lintels actually work composite with the masonry and they usually require a min 225mm ( 1 block or 3 brick) course masonry. Before any load is applied. See installation guide. Sorry not meant to be negative!
Would be great to see you and Del (The Tall Carpenter) working together on a project- as you are both so laid back.
I'm looking forward to the further information concerning the steel as at the moment I sort of don't understand it.
Little spoiler on Instagram 👍
You can tell that the weather is bad when a Geordie has his long sleeves on! ;) Awesome job there Mr. Mac!
Not quite T-shirt weather yet 😂👍
Loving the fact the trampoline never budged. 👍
Solid! It's staked down mind. 👍😎
Brutal working in freezing weather, coming along nicely despite it!
Cheers - getting there!
I remember my extension. It was in the winter of 2000/2001. They had knocked out the back wall before Christmas, put up a OSB wall instead. After New Year they came back for the new back wall and roof.
Oh no! Were you living in it with a OSB back wall?!
@@GosforthHandyman yes, and it was pretty cold I remember. With the back wall also the heating was gone. So we used a small electric heater and artic sleeping bags to watch TV.
Must have been freezing!
Gotta keep pushing forward. Air compressor is great for clearing snow. We tried an old gutter to keep the insulation dry... Better than nothing I guess.
Too right! 👍
awesome work under extreme weather conditions bless you, and there is another two on the way, so I guess you have also fort with them too. I followed this from start to finish and on your last video to this build I'm going to have a full day watching from start to finish. keep up the good work buddy.
Cheers Neil! Yeah, the weather has been problematic. 😂
you guys did an incredible job can't wait for next episode
Cheers Andy! 👍
I like how we can date your videos by which storm you're preparing to face
I felt for you when this was happening! And any build project
Cheers! Yeah, the weather has been a bit of a challenge.
Up here in north Scotland we put sarking boards on our joists then fix the felt to them then counter battens ,tile lath and finally the tiles
Yes - I was shocked when I went down south and you could see (what remained of) the felt directly in the loft!
Yup, never sure why we don't do sarking boards. I'm assuming it's connected with ventilation. 🤔👍
Very glad to hear that you survived Arwen without any damage! Here’s hoping more of the same for the rest of them 😬
Cheers - so far so good! Hopefully we're past the worst of it. 👍
Amazing work, great perseverance
Cheers Peter!
Good luck with your build
Cheers Paul!
When I was in business being in a seasonal business, I would get a late start and knock off early in the winter. Basically, bankers hours 10-4.
When it gets dark, that's when accidents happen and you lose tools.
That made up for the 14 hour days 7 days a week in the summer!
Too right!
Amazing work
Cheers!
Robin Clevett and Roger Bisby are da men
Would have been advisable in winter to use Rock Wool insulation bats/boards instead of fibre glass as it's hydrophobic. Slightly more expensive but the cavity will generally dry out faster and the insulation won't degrade from the weight of water. where fibre glass often will if it becomes too saturated you could be looking at weeks to months before it dries and reduced insulation levels after it has.
The Isover insulation is silicone impregnated glass mineral wool slab bonded with thermo-setting resin, handles water pretty well. But less so when it's saturated and freezes in to a solid block. 😂
I'm surprised you never did the roof yourself. You are more than capable!
The tiling? I was very tempted and it nearly came to that at one point. Perhaps a subject for another video. 😁
@@GosforthHandyman yeah the tiles and lead. You would have done it great. To be fair I understand you do have to draw a line on things you do yourself.
Love the content by the way 👍
Cheers bud!
Even your trampoline stayed put!
Yup! It's well pegged down. A few trees at the bottom were taken out. 😬
ill be interested to see how you do the floor joists, in all my years as a builder thats something i never did
Coming soon! 👍
joist hangers using wall anchor bolts i presume ,we will see
Resin bolted ledger. 👍
7:35 We live in the North East of Scotland, and Storm Arwen hit us pretty bad with power cuts, water loss and trees down. Certainly won't forget that one in a while. 🌨️❄️🥶
well done
Nothing wrong with the roof nice tidy job 👍
Cheers Mark! Biggest lean-to I've done - quite pleased with it 👍
Looking good mate
Cheers Frank! Hope you're well and survived the storms! 👍
@@GosforthHandyman yes mate all good still in my shorts and Tshirt lol
Great job despite the wether 👍👍👍👍
Ah, storm arwen. Delivered us a gift of a lovely big hole in the roof! Got it patched eventually (all the roofers were super busy round here!), but re-roof/conversion is looking like our spring project.
Oh no! Yeah, roofers will be kept busy for months. Hope you get sorted!
Looking forward to next vid x
👍👍
Looking brilliant. The storm must have been terrible
Cheers! The storm was a bit scary with the place being so open. 😬
How to tackle getting the roof around that "annoying jutty bit of wall" would have occupied my mind for weeks and weeks if I was doing it! Good effort on the roof I thought you would get a contractor to do it but it looks great.
Cheers Sean! Yeah, I was quite confident on the back roof but the weather didn't help. 👍😂
Did your plumber tell you that you need to leave access to all of the joins on the flu once installed, so you will need hatches all over to make that run inspectable, seems a boiler move might have been easier
The full flue run is accessible. 👍
To paraphrase an Aussie hero, -2 that's not cold.-20c for a week with -35 wind chill. That's cold LOL. Thought you Geordies were a tough bunch LOL Did look nice and cosy in front of that nice stove. Job is looking great.
Ha ha, yeah I keep thinking of the poor truckers in Canada at -25C. I did have a genuine problem with frozen wood mind! 😂
Enjoying the content
👍👍
Another great instalment! I have become obsessed with the work you are doing! Rookie question about insulation...does putting 'solid' insulation in the wall cavities affect the working of the cavity as I understood the cavities to be there to allow external moisture to not affect internal walls? And, again apologies for ignorance. Is it viable to put insulation sitting on top of ground floor ceiling plasterboards? I have an inadvertent hole in my ceiling and wondered if there was any benefit? Ceiling will be boarded over with new boards. Thanks and keep the brilliant videos coming.
A string line would have done the job to find out where the second ledger was going, probably a little quicker too
Probably! 👍😎
Or just a level across and then an off cut against that to get the new top hight. Easy to come up with ideas when you don't have the stress of doing the work though 👍
@@rossMIE that works to done it many times
Wearing PJ in front of a log fire. I expected the cap to come off and luscious lock to cascade. 🤣 Weather is a bummer, and my brother is suffering while I make him tons of mugs of coffee.
Defo no luscious locks any more 😂. Hope yours is progressing well!
I got battered on the head by my garage door courtesy of Eunice so I feel your pain ( and mineBTW)!
It’s coming on great but it IS hard work uncovering and re-covering things every day as well as handling freezing things.
Oh no! Hope you're OK! Luckily Eunice didn't hit us too bad.
Great video as usual Andy. Could you provide a link to the wall bolts you used for your wooden wall plate in the video. I’m building a lean-to and they look exactly what I need. Thanks Cragly 👍
You should really get them spec'd by a structural engineer, but I think it was these: www.toolstation.com/fischer-loose-wallbolt-fwb/p76525
Thanks Andy, it’s only for a small lean-to at the side of my new build. I’m working up to the bigger projects 😉
Robin Clevitt or Dan Cox roof masters. Make it look so easy…..
Nice job though Andy
Don't think I've seen Dan Cox! Will check out. Robin's work is stunning. 👍
@@GosforthHandyman Dan does work with skill builder, so bet you have 😁. In fairness Andy none to shabby yourself
Have you tried nailing jelly to the ceiling? If anyone can....
Well done both Mr & Mrs Mac. I hope, as I type this, everything is resolved and all the spanners have been retracted.
😂 Yes, most spanners retracted now... not all! 😬
Over here in Sweden the builders and carpenters call it a day and quit working outside when it gets down to -20!
😂 I'd be off on the slopes if it was -20 here. 👍
Giant dovetailed my rafters in🎯 made a Arunda type jig 👍
👍Mrs Mac super trooper👍
👍😎
The timber mounted against the bricks is that drilled into the bricks or the mortar?
What type of bolt did you use to fix your timber to the wall? Thank you
Head down and plow on Andy. 👍👍👍
Too right!
@@GosforthHandyman You're over the worst i would think now. Main structure up and semi waterproof. Get the lean to roof on and rafters can dry out. But there's snags ahead so you say. Look forward to seeing how you solve them 😃
What no handrails or toeboards on scaffold Andy? Admire your attention to detail ,making access doors wide enough for a digger .
Cheers! It's only low level. 👍
Hi what are the fitting/bolts that you used for the ledger board
Hi mate what method did you use to attach ledger board to the exciting building? Chemical anchors, expanding fixings or self tapping fixings?
*existing
😂 when did that snow happen? Im in annistford 🤷♂️ missed me.
Sometimes you just need to carry on even in such adverse weather conditions, it's all too easy to do nothing and sit snugly next to the stove if it rains and freezes.
But having an appointment with the roofers surely is a reason to get on.
Sadly my appointment with the roofers last August to do my flat roof was spoiled by severe rainfall, and after that we couldn't arrange for a new term because his agenda and my job didn't line up.
And now he got knee surgery and possibly can't get on a roof anymore, finding another roofer for when I planned my vacations was impossible so I now have to do it myself.
Having to cover 100 sqm this is a giant undertaking, so wish me luck!
Oh no! Yeah, roofers are like gold dust at the moment. Good luck! 👍
What is the length of the extension? Looks to be bigger than 3m and was wondering did you have to get special tiles with lower pitch requirements to have the length bigger then 3m?
Is your house classed as terraced or still semi-detached now after you have joined the house next door? keep up the great work and great channel.
Cheers! Still a semi - no shared wall. 👍
Great to see the progress, regarding the bedroom floor joists, is it not easier to support them on the brickwork while being built or is there a better reason for not doing this?
We couldn't due to the internal scaffolding. 👍
Great video. Im trying to work out the pitch for my similar extension, however, I cant find any diagrams that show where I should measure from to etc, i.e do i measure the inside or outside of the extension wall to the existing wall to calculate the run, then to measure the rise is that to where the top or the bottom of the header joist position? Any advice would be great, thanks
Bit of a bugger with the nail gun packing up, but before them we did have hammers you know! Didn't hear Mrs mac speaking - love her accent!!
Hammer? 😂
@@GosforthHandyman Yup it's the thing you wack your thumb with
What bolts did you use to attach the ledger boards to the house for the roof could you put a link below please if possible?
Think it was these: www.toolstation.com/fischer-loose-wallbolt-fwb/p76525
Top videos these, best series on YT, I’m Really enjoying this. I’m surprised the boiler kept on working and didn’t lock-out? As a gas safe registered installer I’ll be interested to see your solution for the flue run whilst maintaining the requirement for the flue to be able to be inspected in its entirety. Keep up the great work 👍💪
Thank you Jamie! Boiler was good. Flue was sorted shortly after this. It's just attached to the garage ceiling so easily accessible. 👍
Andy, I love your videos and I admire your attention to detail but I think you took it a tad too far with the ledger plate. Given you were very pressed for time, I'd have put the plate the same level straight across and made the adjustment in the amount cut out of the rafter. I expect it would have been barely the thickness of a saw cut. But heyho it's done now and the water has passed under the bridge. Hope you are looking forward to Spring now. Regards.
Andy......regarding the difference in depth with the two rear upper walls... couldn't you have mounted and fixed a deeper ledger that would be flush to the wall....?
Cracking job with the weather as it was at the time.....I utterly detest working in the rain....
Well, I suppose if you could get a piece of timber the correct dimension - it would be a hell of a big piece, though! No need, really ...?!
Ledger - potentially but you should really have the angle of the rafter all the way to the wall to keep the top row of tiles properly supported. 👍
@@GosforthHandyman just thought I'd ask Andy...
I would move all that wood into the old garage area where it’s protected.
Nail guns don’t like the cold weather I used to use 2 gas tanks one in gun one in my inside pocket to keep it warm
Wasn't a cold weather thing, but yeah - heard about that. 👍
Bit of a nightmare, it’s looking good though.👍👍
Ploughing on!
Alex and I head back home on Monday after spending many weeks working with the Amazing guys at A& E construction, building an extension; through the winter 😆🥶.
The big difference is Tony gears up for it big time , so we had the famous Tony tents , loads of lights and the biggest diesel space heater we have ever seen so we were very lucky to be able to crack on most days . The really and days we had inside jobs to do 👌🏼.
The flat roof is nearly done too , it’s looking amazing and what an experience it has been 😍😍🧱👍🏼
Awesome stuff Steve 👍. A&E do stunning work - as do you guys. I need to catch up on the vids! I ended up buying a little diesel space heater once the roof was on to dry the walls out. They were absolutely saturated from Arwen! 😭
@@GosforthHandyman . Thanks very much .
We managed to get the extension safe before the storms but we’ve been very lucky with weather too 😬🧱👍🏽
Are the old rafters not treated timber? Dont know what the advice is on burning treated timber as it can result in residue coating the flue. Am not telling you what to do, just advice I was given by the company who fitted our woodburner
The age of them old roof timbers will have no treatment but lovely bone dry fire wood
Yeah, too old to be treated. 👍
I am intrigued with your ridge tile, is it one short and my roof ridges have a metal strap that the last tile rests againt with a curly scroll.
Ridge - it's where it meets the box gutter. Hip iron - none fitted for whatever reason! Was wondering that myself but I've seen a few houses without them so I guess they're not always fitted. Need a roofer to confirm!? 👍
@@GosforthHandyman i think its pitches below 35 degrees that dont need them, but i could be wrong
Is your nail gun freezing ..
Builders always have 3 or 4 ppl with them its easier with more hands, takes longer with one person.
Bit late now , but why did you not put the roof timbers in the garage ?
That garage only had a roof a day or so before that. 👍
@3:20 When don't you have rain?
Do you get snow there??
And btw @10:46 does not qualify as getting snow...at least from where I'm from!😅
Ha, some years we get no snow. Only get a 'decent' snowfall every 10 year or so. Normally just a light dusting.
Constantly chasing your tail , is not a good place to be in bless you . Pleased to see you are doing the roof you self , i new it was well within your skill set . As for the weather, let’s just say with the benefit of of hindsight you would of course done things differently . But as we can see you are not one for being beaten , by any stretch of the imagination . Best wishes and kind regards as always to you both 😀👍👍👍
Cheers bud! Yeah, was so glad once the roof was on. 👍😂
Building the Back Better.
Ha yes, much better than Build Back Better. 😂
How wide is the doorway as it just looks standard size from the video?
1m
What stove have you got there? Looking to replace ours with a new one.. All looking good btw
It's a Wiking Mini 2 - great little stove. Kicks out some heat!! 👍
@@GosforthHandyman cheers
Is your new hip roof timbers larger than the existing roof timbers looks like they are
Yes, hugely so. 👍
Why don't the rafters match the pitch on the neighboring roof?
Our extension is slightly bigger. Their roof is 20 degrees. Ours is 16. 👍
Wouldn't the water run back into the boiler? is that safe?
That's how they work. Any condensate runs back to the boiler and out of the drain valve. This was new to me too! 👍😁
