Wow. I’m a relatively new nurse. I only have 5 months of experience in the ICU. I had to leave so I applied to another hospital for the ICU and thought the interview went great. The recruiter calls me back and says they thought I would be “overwhelmed” so they thought it would be better if I started in the stepdown ICU. I told her I didn’t understand the reason because I wouldn’t applied if I didn’t feel ready. I’m not sure if it was something behind it but I took the position because I know I don’t have much experience and I would apply to the regular ICU once I had more experience

I am not interested in being in the medical field but your story is so inspiring, and so juicy! My husband asked me why am I listening to a video about nursing when I have no interest in it, I said because I like this girl and her channel! Thanks for being transparent and resilient! I definitely learned a lot😊

5:28 being honest paved way to get what you initially applied for 👏👏. I also think they just wanted you to settle instead of giving you what you deserved. That ICU job was reserved for "their person".

I commend you for speaking out about how how much discrimination black RN's deal with when applying for positions that qualify for and challenges black RN endured on the job as a result of
management not supporting us and saving the position for non qualified or new grad RN that is white . Love your honesty and do not fear but stand up for your right ....go for positions you qualify for despite discriminatory actions of the interviewer WHY is it that reverse discrimination involving black RN not yet resolved in nursing!!! So sad when their is such a huge shortage of experienced hard working RN's all over America.

Hi, i am so happy I ran across this video. I kid you not I am in the same situation right now. I have a good reputation, charge nurse experience, & 2 years experience as telemetry & I applied for a Cardiac ICU position and the lady said “The manager was very impressed by your resume she wants to start you off as icu step down and in 6 months we can move you up to ICU based off work performance” like whattttttttt lol that’s not what I applied for. Thank you for this video!!! I have been praying and this was my confirmation that I know my worth and I’m going to keep trying until I become an ICU nurse!

I knew all too well that this happens to too many of us. We are forever being redirected and it’s a form of gatekeeping. The get to the highest level of advanced practice, CRNA, ICU experienced is required. 🤔🤔🤔🤔
Keep applying sis, you will get an ICU position. ❤️

Kendra, I just LOVE your channel! I started my nursing career as an LPN for 8 years, and an RN for about 10 years. Unfortunately, I was born with 2 genetic syndromes that disabled me at 38. I honestly mourned the loss of working as a nurse for many years afterwards. Listening to your stories makes me feel like I’m somehow connected to nursing again. I thank you so much for sharing with all of us! 😄❤️

Your story is so inspiring. I am a newgrad ICU nurse of 6 months now. I was always grateful to start off in ICU, but even more so with your story! I still can't believe I landed this position straight out of nursing school and thankfully it's been a positive, and healthy newgrad experience. I'm glad the ER manager helped get you to where you wanted :)

I went straight from post-partum/pediatics to an ICU that did 4-5 open hearts a day. Sometimes, it just depends on the situation at these hospitals. We were shooting CVPs with ice water injections into the swan ganz catheter. I am not sure that any type of step down unit is equivalent to a SICU, MICU, or any type of other ICU.

I love this story and your perseverance is admirable. I am graduating nursing school in March 2023 and my dream is to be an ICU nurse. I currently work as a tech at a hospital as well. Started off as a med surg tech to now I work all over the facility. I am very afraid of not being hired as a new grad ICU nurse and then having to wait for years in order to gain experience in HOPES of being allowed to transfer to ICU in the long run. I am just praying for favor and I pray at the end of the day God opens up doors for me to end up where I belong. Thank you for sharing!

    • @KendraRN
      @KendraRN  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Hi there! Things have changed, the poor staffing and lack of nurses wanting to stay at the bedside has opened doors for new nurses wanting to work in ICU.
I was a tech too, it’s a good start because you’ll know how to perform certain tasks, as well as be comfortable with patients.

@@KendraRN Thank you for your response! That for sure make me feel better. At the hospital I work, I have had some managers mention to me about working on their units after I graduate or certain charge nurses say how they want to recommend me. The only thing is I haven't had the ICU manager to offer anything to me. Plus a nurse I worked with pre-pandemic(black woman) in the IMCU night shift used to tell me how she had repeatedly tried to transfer to ICU but was not able too. So I am hoping this isn't still a THING where I work anymore post-pandemic.

Hey all. Kendra, I'm glad I came across your video because I'm also a tech in the ICU and have been for years (over 10 years), now a new grad RN applying for ICU positions and everyone is telling me go to ED. Absolutely not!!! Today again, I applied and interviewed for ICU and was offered step-down instead. I too know what goes on in those units. Should I continue to apply for ICU or take the step-down?? I really want ICU. I have recommendations as well from head officers.
@thehotpinkrd we will get it girl. Our time is coming.

man I feel this very much right now. I am in minnesota at a large hospital and I am a intellectual person that always wants to learn more. I want to work in the ICU but life keeps throwing curve balls at me. It happened when I just wanted to work in the hospital and no hospital in mn would take me as a new grad so I had to suffer in a TCU to the point of wanting to walk out multiple times due to poor management and being overworked. I did my one year and got into the hospital as a mental health RN and I did like it was a welcome change and it helped me grow as a person and as a nurse. 4 years later I wanted to learn more and get 12 hour shifts so I went to med surg telle. I did love reading the strips. I loved my co workers we worked as a team. However I wasnt learning much and I knew eventually I wanted to do travel nursing so I can make good money for my 3 kids. I also just want some damn formal training on placing an IV that my hospital loves to keep from all nurses who arent icu er or labor and delivery. I will feel like I am a failure if I dont ever get that IV training. So I applied to micu and the manager offered me progressive care or step down and I took it cus I was pregnant and at least it was forward momentum. However, I have 7 years experience as a nurse why couldnt the manager just give me the icu job she hired others into the position but I get shafted. The manager called it a steping stone. To this day the manager is asking me if I can handle the more detail orientated assessments and honestly most of the pts I had so far are not that complex at all. I even had one icu nurse that I told my story to say that I should have been hired right into micu with 7 years experience. So I am thinking once I am on my maternity leave I will apply to other hospitals for icu cus I feel like I deserve it. I feel unfairly treated, tricked and I am even be bullied by one of the progressive nurses.

I admire your tenacity you had shown trying to get into ICU. You stuck to what you wanted and the Lord blessed you you did get what you wanted. I am about to start my first ICU position. I too was told that I would get to move up from med-surg tele to ICU and when I gave notice my manager told me that she was about to put me in there but I left anyway to go to an outpatient position which is just not for me so I was checking with my old manager about getting into ICU and she wanted me to go back to ms tele to quote-unquote get my foot back in the door and I was like no I don't think so because I had a feeling that there would be no hurry in fulfilling my request. So I applied with two large nearby hospitals in both offered me and ICU position I accepted one. So here we go let's see if I can cut the mustard
