DeNiro's Max Cady was probably crazier, but Mitchum's was more dangerous - the perfect choice for this part! Like in Looking For Mr. Goodbar, this girl hooked up with the wrong guy, which she realized as Mitchum prowled the end of the bed later like a big cat, but she luckily got out of it alive!

Finally, when I had had enough of it, I said to her, "When I ask some woman out I expect her to have the courtesy when she is with me to be with me. Your behavior is not acceptable. Pal," I said to the man, "You can have her!" And that was that.

This was the one scene where I would switch DeNiro's version for Mitchum's. I know of few women who would be swept up by some stranger just looking at her right, but a guy who sweet talks some poor woman while she is inebriated, like in the DeNiro version, is more believable. Otherwise, Mitchum's version was definitely better.

The "type" of jazz? I think it can be categorized as "hard bop" - check out Wes Montgomery, Grant Green and Kenny Burrell for more.
I know it's an old comment, but this doesn't sound anything like hard bop I've heard. This sounds closer to beatnik jazz or lounge.
