I read that people can often be suicidal and depressed, and the depression is the thing which prevents them from taking action in committing suicide, but then if say they start an antidepressant, it gives them the motivation now, and get up and go, to actually take their own life, as before, the depression was holding them back. Hence why it's a concern, prescribing for this group of patients.

@@lilium-orchid I volunteered myself to one once. They literally held me there against my will and told me if I left early my insurance wouldn't cover it. Worst choice I've ever made in life. Some of the nurses there had no idea why I was still there and told me to talk to the psychiatrist assigned to me. I talked to tons of people in charge. Wouldn't let me go. Psychiatrist there would give me like 10 seconds of time and just say you're doing good. The girls would come out crying after talking to him because we were all being held there against our will. People who were taken involuntarily had to go to court just to get out. Taken from their jobs and families. It was disgusting. I have no idea how they're allowed to do that. Also they mix normal people with those who have schizophrenia and whatnot. It's so stupid. First day there some guy was threatening people with a pencil. Great place. Oh and I also learned that social workers aren't on your side either. Was also during covid so my mom was only allowed to visit me once for 15 minutes with a nurse listening to us. There needs to be a lawsuit. I also became anemic during my time there because the food was so bad. So their fix for that was putting me on the "healthier" diet with even worse food. One of the nurses was amazed when I showed her how they couldn't even make scrambled eggs. It was like a watery mess.

I’m a neuroscience major with a long history of mental health issues. The more I really look into the formal side of psychology the more problems I find with treating mental illness like it’s in a vacuum. It’s deeply bizarre to me how when dealing with issues such as anxiety and depression people treat it like emotions are irrelevant and unscientific, when the emotional state of the person is the problem at hand. Reading papers sometimes can get so uncomfortable when people just don’t talk about the subjects like they’re human, and especially in medical settings it’s always bizarre when things that provide comfort or make people generally feel better are dismissed as unnecessary in favor of cold utilitarian design, when making the person feel better emotionally is broadly the point. It really says something that this guy came up and talked about how “people are more likely to commit if something bad happens in their life and they don’t feel like it’s worth living” like it was a revelation unconsidered by all of science. I love psychology dearly but sometimes it needs to learn that sometimes people feel bad because their life sucks and not only because of some pathological illness (also even if it is caused by a pathological illness that needs medication to be treated, generally treating them like a human being and taking to account their emotional state is also important).

The way I heard some people talk about it in the media, they say it's a hormone imbalance and talk about it like it's a disease like cancer or something. The question is what it's caused by. I believe western individualism is a big cause as to why almost everyone looks at it this way. It's just insane to me when we see this increase in loneliness, depression and suicide and think that the solution is individual therapy, while the waiting lists for therapists grow and grow. It seems like we're trying to fix the symptoms of a sick society, instead of addressing the root causes. Individualist thinking is not going to help us get out of this pit

What I want to know is this: why do people care if someone kills themselves? While alive, strangers can treat a person with aloof contempt without giving it a second thought, but if that same person then becomes suicidal, society at large suddenly cares whether or not that person is able to end things. I think the answer is that when someone becomes suicidal, they become larger than an individual person who is able to be fit into a box by society at large. They become a person who has transcended society by choosing, in the most drastic and irreversible way, to reject it in its entirety. I think the reason why we cannot allow people to make their own choices about when to die - even those who we can admit have a justifiable reason for doing so, such as the elderly and infirm - is that we cannot allow such a negation of the seemingly innate meaning of society to take place. We see suicide as an attack on the foundation of our human conceit - that life has an inherent meaning.

It's silly, imo. Nothing is worth that kind of stress or self isolation. People just want too much. So many people out there wanting a friend, or love, or adventure, or respect, whatever one's pain. You can just ignore it all and choose to be happy, choose to disregard negative forces. Think about trafficking victims, slaves, people who's loved ones are murdered, families going from war to refugee camp, to foreign country and culture, child abuse, all these people live among us, and are doctors, politicians, bakers, etc. I can't speak for you, but these thoughts make me wonder how I can be sorry about anything. The attacks I've suffered completely suck, and are totally negatively affective to my life, but none of it is that bad. These people not only survive, they are there for their children etc. and are usually the best moral people.
Of course, the culmination of all the damage creates more damage, and is the source for the sickness in our culture that has cost me so much. But we can't blame other victims. Especially now I just credited them with saving my life by giving me the perspective to maintain some humility.
You have to beat fear. You do that with courage. Courage is the Key emotion related to Honor. You can practice your courage through practicing Honor. That means things like telling the Truth even when it's embarrassing or will cause stress, or may cause a reaction in some one. Face it, face that fear. Think about your daily habits, and your actual values, are you really honoring what you believe? Make that change no matter how scary. You will find things don't go the way you thought ty would, and you will have more courage to do i again, in a bigger spot, etc. Honor takes courage. And courage conquers fear. Courage leads to the light, fear leads to the dark. They are polar opposites in our search for Truth. You must foster, build, nurture the courage in you. You must, or you will be in the darkness.
      Good luck

Well, I'm guessing the reason that French sociologist didn't focus on Schizophrenia and depression is two-fold: society didn't have a good understanding of mental illness, let alone schizophrenia and depression, in 1897. I think it simply boils down to Loss of Emotional/Thought/Meaning Control
What the professor showed makes sense, but it doesn't cover the whole picture. Depression might be the most common cause of suicide because it takes on the emotional/logic/meaning side of a person, but if there is a distinction between these three the thing becomes more complex
For example, if someone has tried everything to solve their issues, but their condition keeps worsening and they can't really see a way out anymore, the emotional side shuts down and it makes sense to suicide on a logical level. At that point I believe there's no turning back, unless the person is forcefully brainwashed to rewire the thought process in a more positive way, as he will never see a way out on his own
Or when someone feels so good he wouldn't care to die in that specific moment as he would've experienced the very peak life had to offer and everything would be downhill from there on. Especially in extreme episodes of Mania, a person can feel so good life loses its material meaning, so it becomes easier to slip and commit suicide so the happiness never ends
Or if there is a clear disconnection with the external reality, and delusions are in play, a person could believe he wouldn't die with a bullet to the brain, for example, so he could try it and accidentally commit suicide
But in every single case there is a neglect in personal needs either consciously or not, which then transforms itself in a loss of control based on the situation and events and can end up into suicide based on the intensity of the whole thing
These are my thoughts and personal insights about the matter after years of introspection and talking with other suicidal patients

The issue is not just the system we created, it is the system of nature itself that leads to our suffering. If we could just create a utopia then nobody would have any reason to exploit others and everyone would want to build such a utopia but there is seemingly no path towards such a utopia and so instead we fight to be at the top of the exploitation game because exploitation will happen anyway and we would rather not be the ones being exploited. The universe is seemingly a zero sum game; everything gained comes with an equal loss. Work never pays off because you will always lose more energy than you can gain from working. The workaround is to exploit, to steal, to gain that which you did not put in. We have no choice but to exploit, one way or another, or else we gain nothing.

Whatever else goes into it due to external ideological distortions (think of big pharma, or very suspicious research articles), not because the subject itself is somehow inherently "religious". Everything needs faith in practices to a certain degree; you have faith that your car won't suddenly blow up upon starting even if it is a possibility. Whatever stands as a justification for a belief is nothing more than another belief.
People forget that psychiatry, and all of medicine really is not only a science, but also an indendent social practice, like the law or education. It has some elements of research, and others which are strictly practical, and the mediation between the two is an extremely delicate matter.

As someone that studies psychology on the side but has had past struggles with depression and ideation; The core issue often leads to how the individual was treated as a child and the traumas they have survived through. Alot of people are operating from a shitty life that they have valid reasons to feel like things have been unfair. But no matter how unfair life has been, you can always rise from the ashes to do better and be better. Because no one should let those that hurt you or failed to help you be the death of you.

Telling someone to "rise from the ashes" won't help when their body and heart are decaying and failing due to circumstance alone. (Study: "Cardiovascular disease was the most prevalent cause of death..." which can be caused by many many factors. See: www.who.int/health-topics/cardiovascular-diseases#tab=tab_1 )

@@fenjohrer Well, here is the crux of it. While you are correct that there are people that are often overly blaming things outside of themselves, rational people don't go out of their way to blame things on everybody else. When someone is emotionally stable, there's a certain level of accepting ones own part to play in things and that taking it out on someone else would be rude and isn't mature. But life can be difficult for everyone and requires some emotional processing, acceptance and maybe even some problem solving. When people haven't learned how to do that or they have received let's say a difficult childhood where their parents repeatedly insult them and traumatize them over and over, then they go out of their way to complain and blame things other than themselves, because they have all this chaos inside themselves they are projecting out into the world. Then depression may come from a lack of ability to change that, to change all the negative things in life, in the world or about theirself. But in reality their perception of those things is a hyper focus of the most negative aspects of life and isn't looking at things from other perspectives. Sometimes they don't even have depression and become narcissistic egomaniacs that want to control everything so that they never have to feel bad about themselves. Lol What I'm ultimately trying to say is that it is nuanced and very complicated, everyone handles trauma differently. There are both biological and environmental conditions that influence a person's emotional reactivity and ability to function normally.

"It then remains for us to specify the attitude of immanent philosophy towards the man who takes his own life and towards the criminal. How easily the stone falls from one's hand onto the grave of the man who has killed himself, how difficult in contrast was the struggle of the poor man who laid himself so well to rest. First he cast from afar an anxious glance at Death and turned away in horror; then, trembling, he skirted Him in wide arcs; but with each day the distance grew smaller and smaller until finally he threw his tired arms around Death's neck and looked Him in the eye: and in those eyes was a peace, sweet peace. Whoever can bear the burden of conscious existence no more, let him cast it off. Whoever can hold out no longer in the carnival hall of life-or, as Jean Paul says, in the great servants’ quarters of the world-let him step out through the ever opened door into the still night." - Philipp Mainländer

One of the main things that keeps me from actually doing it. I’ve heard survivors of suicide say, right when I jumped, I had remorse for my actions. And while falling to I thought was going to be my death, I wanted to live. So even in our gravest, darkest times in our minds, we still Cleve to life.
Hope that helps, every time I think about doing it, there’s something that occurs after that makes me glad I didn’t. Believe it or not, there are things in life worth living for and if you do it, guess what? No one will care.

Naturally there are a number of variables that are set to change; available methods, altered life course and circumstances, etc. So far I've decided that flushing my frog with the methods available will be more painful than continuing to live under my current circumstances, so i live. Someday that might change.

I knew this years ago after figuring out the basic operating principle of humans, we look towards the easiest way towards our desired outcomes according to our value judgments.
Put simply, if someone kills themself, it’s usually because it was (in their view, right or wrong) the most expedient way to achieve their goal, whatever it may be, even if it harms them (which explains why addicts are a thing).
So the solution would be, fundamentally, to get people to step back and properly look at and attempt alternate solutions to the problem, *or* realise the problem was nonsensical to begin with.
Bit callous, but the rationale is sound.

Hey, it's not so callous. Lots of the time suicidal people simply want to not be suffering anymore. Helping people live in less pain is a good goal. And oftentimes it's far easier and more effective to help others than it would be for everyone to help themselves.

Maybe some people do sanguinely perform the grim calculus but I doubt that’s true most of the time. Whatever is happening has to overcome our innate instinct for self-preservation, which is an irrational instinct. Hard to overcome instinct with rationality and argumentation.

What gives you the 'right' to interfere with people who decide to take their OWN lives?

    • @NeilMalthus
      @NeilMalthus หลายเดือนก่อน +1

"Rights" are purely anthropogenic - ie 'man-made'. There are no rights in a nihilistic universe. That said, human kind evolved to dominate the planet and live in its civilizations and societies. Now, we're at a point on that timeline where many value empathy and morality, we don't like to think of ourselves as animals, we care for others.
Whilst _spiritualism_ is a load of capitalism-mass propagated bollocks, and we all of course do indeed have a right to take our own lives if we so wish, the desire to end it is anti-Darwinian in the extreme. Nature is all about a struggle to exist, a fight to survive. It's quintessentially human that some may for whatever reason have lost that desire to fight on. But that's largely down to the system being far from perfect. And we recognise this as many believe we should.
Those who have lost the desire to persevere will by definition be at the wrong end of the mental health continuum. Yet all nations have hospitals and health services to a degree. Do we let the injured man bleed out? No, we don't, typically; we battle to save his life. That's who we are. The man with self-inflicted slashed wrists, should he be allowed to bleed out? Arguably, yes, but don't expect the rest of society to think highly of you if you walk on by without intervening.
Life _often_ does get better. For anyone and everyone. Whilst you might not see clear skies on the horizon, a silver lining to all the cloud, happiness could yet be just around the corner for you. And it's for that reason (and the rest I've waffled on about) that most folk will probably want to talk the suicidal out of their intentions, unless they're terminally ill in a society that can accept people may see little point in suffering terminal illness.

What gives you the right to force those who care about you to suffer your loss? Do you hate them?
Plus, you have to be in a bad state of mind to commit suicide. It's not a logical decision. Once people get out of that state of mind, they tend to no longer want to kill themselves and express gratitude for those that helped them through that dark time. Wouldn't you rather we try to help people to be happy?

    • @MaggaraMarine
      @MaggaraMarine หลายเดือนก่อน

What gives a doctor the right to help people who are unconscious? People with suicidal thoughts are mentally ill - they can't think straight. Curing their mental illness is a bit like doing CPR.
There are some fringe cases where I do think one shouldn't interfere, and it's clearly their own logical decision. For example if you know that you have a deadly disease, and you will die a painful death in 2 years - that is when I think it makes sense to let people make their own decision on the way they would like to die. But if you are physically healthy, then helping someone with suicidal thoughts is kind of like doing CPR.
I think it's fair to criticize society for only caring when things get so bad that someone attempts to commit suicide. But still, I think society would be much worse if they didn't even care then.
Also, this kind of rhetoric is harmful to those who have suicidal thoughts, but are still considering seeking help. Actually, I'm going to report this comment because of this.

Although I would consider myself to be quite suicidal, I seem to be fairly low-risk when assessed by the equation. My life is not in any particular disorder or disarray. No drugs, alcohol, sleep deprivation, psychosis, etc that could cause an altered state. I don't really feel like I have any kind of time limit to fix things by. The only aspect that really fits me is depression, as my psychiatrist states that I am severely depressed.
That being said, I do agree with what was said about not all depressed people being suicidal. And there are many other emotional states (anxiety, anger, paranoia, etc) that can spawn suicidal thoughts as well. But because of the diverse way suicidal thoughts can manifest, I think it would unfortunately be impossible to come up with one equation/evaluation that will catch all of us in time

      went to chatgpt,
The comment you provided seems to critique some points made in the video regarding sociological and psychological understandings of depression, suicide, and the role of community or spirituality. Here’s a breakdown of the points mentioned:
      1. **Misreading of Durkheim (not an individualist account)**: Émile Durkheim, a sociologist, is known for his theory on suicide, where he argued that suicide is not just an individual act but a social phenomenon influenced by factors like the lack of social integration and moral regulation. This critique suggests that the video might have wrongly interpreted Durkheim as presenting an individualistic account of suicide, while Durkheim focused on social factors, particularly the breakdown of community bonds (anomie).
      2. **If depression is necessary but not sufficient, same criticism applies to anomie/desperation**: The comment implies that if the video argues depression is a necessary but not sufficient cause of suicide, the same logic should apply to Durkheim’s concept of *anomie* (a state of normlessness or social instability). Durkheim posited that anomie or social desperation could lead to suicide but acknowledged that it alone doesn’t directly cause it, much like depression.
      3. **“Spirituality” isn’t needed, community suffices (cf Durkheim)**: The comment argues that instead of focusing on "spirituality" as a solution, community or social integration alone, as Durkheim emphasized, is enough to prevent suicide. Durkheim believed that strong social ties and community connections help protect individuals from suicide by giving them a sense of belonging and purpose.
      4. **“Depression” not associated directly with suicide, as it lowers the will to act. It’s often a brief recession of the depressive condition that enables suicide**: This point challenges the common assumption that depression directly leads to suicide. The commenter highlights that during deep depression, a person’s energy and motivation are often so low that they may not have the will to act on suicidal thoughts. It’s during moments of slight recovery, when energy levels temporarily improve, that a person might be more likely to attempt suicide. This aligns with some psychological research on the relationship between depression and suicide attempts.
In summary, the comment critiques potential misinterpretations of Durkheim’s theory of suicide and suggests that the role of community (not spirituality) is central, while also discussing the complex relationship between depression and suicide.

I would think the 'high spirituality' is more of the social support you would get surrounded by ppl who think similarly of being dissuaded from suicide, like a group think, so eveyone would think 'suicide is bad' instead of 'i wouldnt commit suicide bc ppl will think differently of me and my family'.
