Correction - you CAN gain speed in the air with classic sonic games, but the effectiveness of the acceleration is still heavily dictated by the speed you leave the ground with and that’s what impacts the jump trajectory more than anything. Under almost no circumstances could you attain max speed from a standstill using only air acceleration in those games. That can happen easily in SRB2. SRB2’s air acceleration is not only obvious, it’s intrusive.
    My point stands.

Playing SRB2 on the default Simple controls (Automatic camera, no autobrake etc.) is not a good experience. I'd recommend putting the camera on Manual mode, putting autobreak, selecting Orbital Looking and even messing around with the controls if you play on controller.
I personally use a twin stick control method, left stick for movement, right stick for camera (with Orbital looking enabled - you'll need OpenGL mode for this), RB - jump, LB - spin. I also use Steam controller configurator to fine tune stick deadzone and sensitivity beyond what SRB2 offers me ingame.
After making these tweaks I honestly think, without exaggeration, that SRB2 Sonic is the best controlling Sonic out of any Sonic game and I have a good portion of my channel dedicated to SRB2 prove that.
I also recommend TheJackalMan's SRB2 controller layout video for guidance (I had an SRB2 controller tutorial video but it's outdated because future updates reassigned certain buttons and might confuse you)

The way Sonic controls can be decent once you get the hang of it, but my problem with the game it's not the only the controls, but how the level design acommodates for Sonic's controls, specially on later levels. Platforming sections in the later levels get a little too unforgiving considering Sonic doesn't have any vertical movement like Tails and Knuckles do.

    • @MariusUrucu
      @MariusUrucu 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

@@SendoDX Yeah, for as much as I enjoy SRB2, the controls menu can be really obtuse, especially in regards to mapping Vertical looking and triggers (seriously, how tf am I supposed to know what buttons are X-Rudder, Y-Rudder and Z-Rudder).
Then again, those confusing controls stem from being based off of a Doom sourceport, because it sure as hell is user unfriendly.

unironically most physics mods straight up make the physics worse and also make the game worse because it's not designed around them.
but, Adventure Sonic has pretty good physics actually. also S3 Sonic, too.

Both you and the people are right. Default Sonic characters ARE ass but the game changes entirely once you install Adventure sonic or X Sonic. In fact these two mods made me actually like the game where before i wouldn't touch it at all. The only redeeming base character is Tails because of his flight which makes robo blast awful platforming and physics more bearable but playing as any other default character an experience i wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy.

@@peckneck2439 Unironically, I'd rather play Sonic or Metal Sonic instead those two characters. Adventure Sonic is too slow (with the base moveset) to be enjoyable imo. And X Sonic is just Super Mystic Sonic with less abilities. I don't know why X Sonic went so popular because that mod way designed as a speedrunning character.

@@SendoDX It is honestly pretty baffling that the developers made the camera Automatic by default. I can only imagine it was a misguided attempt to lure in fans of the adventure style. But SRB2 is not an adventure style Sonic game. Its a DOOM game. Sonic's physics are built around the fact that you aim him like a gun and hold forward, only using left and right movement while going slow or to make very small corrections.
Like any shooter, it works better with kb/m, but you can still improve the controller experience by binding thok/jump to the shoulder buttons and movement to the d-pad for constant camera control.

As someone who has played the hell out of this game I will say that I'm so glad someone decided to talk about this. When I was a little younger I didn't care as much cause everything is fun when your oblivious to bugs and issues, but as I kept playing I started to feel how awful the movement is. Sonic has the gravity as a feather and yet also has the air control of a rock and it's just like wow, I mean you know it's sad when I open the game to instantly load a air control/momentum mod. And that's just the game!!
what's even worse is if you are like me and still HAD hope for this game you might as well give up because the team doesn't share ANYTHING with it's community! I'm in their discord and it's considered generous to get bread crumbs for news. And if you dare to talk about issues of the game 9 times out of 10 you get into an argument. I can confidently say that the ONLY reason why this game is still being playing is cause of the mods.
I really like this game for what it is, a classic sonic game in 3d and the levels are pretty fun to learn even if it takes time but inside the game the control REALLY needs attention and outside the game we NEED to have more news along with less putting people down for speaking up. If they really want a small update all they need to do is fix gravity and jump height and air control also MAYYYYYBE smoother acceleration for both air and ground movement but knowing this game that's going to take till 2040 for it to happen.
I just wanna have fun again...

As someone who enjoys SRB2 currently, i CAN say it got frustrating & not fun to play for the first time (sonic being slippery & too fast)
The thing is, you need to get used to the controls. Give it some time and practice, configure the game to your likings (there's multiple configs), and once you get the hang of it, it's actually pretty fun
Once i got used to the speed, levels, and started using mods/add-ons, i actually started to think the vanilla characters are pretty slow or balanced!
You could say it's an acquired taste. But hey, if you still don't like it after spending a lot of time practicing & getting used to it, it's fine!

I think the main problem is how momentum works in this game. This game’s acceleration curve is much steeper than most games than and it shows especially.
The acceleration in srb2 is almost entirely exponential, If you jump forward from a stand still you’ll go nowhere and if you’re already moving at a decent speed you hit max airspeed in under half a second.
Also because Fang and Amy’s jump height is slightly higher than the rest of the cast, they’re the only ones who jump onto the block at 0:27 without using abilities. Having the minimum jump height be moved up to theirs could help improve platforming.
P.S. Play Metal Sonic, he literally fixes half this game’s problems.
Game too slow because there’s no grounded momentum?
Accelerate to double the max run speed.
    Jump height too low?
Gain increased jump height during boost mode.
Struggling to adjust in the air?
Use float to air stall and ignore the rolling jump penalty.
    Annoying platforming section?

2:59 he’s supposed to be “hard mode” which I don’t really get why they did that, Knuckles jumps higher than him, apparently 2.3 is gonna completely revamp the game like new levels and actual momentum stuff.
5:06 idea is COOL, but I hate the Thok simply because of the reasons your explaining and cause it’s actually screwed me so hard so many times.
8:13 it is very frustrating, I love and hate this game all in one.

Sonic definitely needs a re-work, and the physics do make the game play more like a traditional plaformer than a sonic game.
The game is also in dire need of a revision in level design and visuals, especially Egg Rock Zone. I do hope the game is able to improve on that the most.
Keep in mind that this game is a technical marvel, being made from the legacy doom source port. It is not the best sonic game but it's probably the best modding sandbox the sonic community has atm.

The base games is very lackluster the spindash is only good for spindash jumping you cant uncurl from a roll, the rolling itself controls very bad, the base controller scheme sucks because how the games is designed and yet I still really like this game because you can load three-trillion mods and fix whatever problems you have with it. There are many multiple physics change mods that make the game play more like the adventure games with momentum (even though the levels aren’t really designed for it) there’s loads of characters that also change the gameplay like modern sonic or blaze and community is really active so there’s always more to play

I understand where you're coming from with this, I've been playing Srb2 since I was 6-7 years old and I'm close to being 21 now. Honestly playing on anything but strafe mode is the worst experience at least in my opinion but I do say Srb2 was at it's peak during the 2010's with how little people played it yet there were a ton of mods to keep it fresh and entertaining especially compared to where it's at today in 2.2.
Personally I just think everyone now says Srb2 is the best sonic fan game due to how easy it is just to mod the game and it's one of if not one of the only sonic fan games that frequently gets updates time to time, somewhat easy to make mods for and being able to play with friends very easily.
Nobody really talked about it back then either I remember finding it on a random website that has sonic fan games for download and Srb2 was one of them.

As a longtime SRB2 modder/player, the main issue with the controls is that if you don't have a lot of momentum, you acceleration is super low, whilst the moment you pick up some speed the acceleration goes up. So if you had some speed when initiating a jump, pressing W will make you accelerate forward a lot, but if you didn't, then you'll basically have no air control. Techically, your acceleration is divided by half when midair, but because of this peculiarity it only makes the problem worse. Like, if you want to make a corrective jump because you overshot a platform, you can't, because changing direction mid-jump is impossible. This is also why the ground controls feel so slippery and bad, despite them adding an autobreak option in 2.2 to address it. Also, the jump being low, the gravity being low and the camera following you up as you jump, makes the jump arc very bad yeah. It all stems from the controls being a tweaked version of the Doom controls lol

The reason Sonic isn't jumping very high is because you are supposed to HOLD the spacebar to jump higher, and tap it for little hops, this has been present in the classic games for the longest time, and this game was made around the time where the most notable Sonic games were the Adventure and classic series, both of which had this jumping mechanic.
The reason the movement is a bit slippery is because the game is (currently) based off the code of a Doom source port (it was originally based off the Hexen engine, but I won't get into that lest we stay here talking for 5 more minutes - but yes, it did move engines), specifically Doom Legacy. I play alot more classic Doom than I do Sonic games nowadays, so playing games whose movement feels more like Doom feels more natural to me.
Also, spindashing requires more than a single button press to be effective- mashing the spin button in SRB2, like holding down and pressing jump alot in the classic games, makes the spindash more powerful. I just saw a weak spindash or two and thought you might need to know this, too.

    • @SendoDX
      @SendoDX  4 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

I uh... I know that and it doesn't impact the way that I view the game. His jump height is still VERY low even when holding the space bar down.
That's valid, still ends up feeling weird for people coming from other platformers so I think it's valid to dislike but if you don't mind it that's totally valid.
Wait so do I need to spam the space bar while holding shift or just hold shift down? Holding shift down seemed to work so if there's also a spacebar element that I didn't know about, I'll use that more

But then I remembered: "Oh yeah, that's right, Mystic used to be a lead game designer and community manager." And when I tell you that *that* guy was likely to blame for 80% of SRB2's game-feel problems, I mean it. Nobody liked that guy lol. His hierarchical seniority combined with his anal-rententive autism was a major reason why the devs could barely iterate on SRB2's game design at all over the project's 20 year history. (he's been chased out of the community for other reasons since after v2.2 came out, though)

Really don't like the fact that they made sonic the "hard mode" of this game, it's usually knuckles who's supposed to be the hardest. And the fact that players are most likely to pick sonic without looking at the text on the side of the select screen (which doesn't really specify that he's the hardest character to play) is the reason why some people put this game down and never play it again.

While I do agree with every single point you said, it does technically come down to skill issue. At one point it was so good at this game, since I was playing it constantly. My life got complicated, and I dropped the game for 2 years. Now I'm reminded of what it was. Like originally entering this game.
I don't think the controls are just ass, more so just serviceable. Especially for newcomers to Sonic games in general. But if you try to play this like Adventure or Boost, you will struggle. The only options you have are either master the game, tweak the hell out of the controls, or just use mods. If you have to have that much done before you can get 100% of the experience, you have work to do.
And they're still on it. This game has been in development for 24 years, and is still going. I have no doubt they will eventually perfect the controls.
I'm glad you and others share this same sentiment I do. About people glazing this game, I think it's simply because of how much there is. 8 zones, a full soundtrack, tons of extras, many playable characters, built in modding support, and multiplayer. From just a glance, it's almost like the perfect Sonic game.

Yes the controls i dislike to a point i had to use physics overhaul mods and all of that. which isnt a good thing, having to use a mod to make the game feel more fluid and natural for you. but i will say it's not the greatest to say others suck the game off, there was definitely a lot of love and passion put into this mod of another game, but i can understand where youre going with that. People defend it to high hell, theres a LOT of issues with this game, like the sudden difficulty spikes of later levels and sonic's thok which i personally wish was scaled with momentum like the Xmomentum mod sonic, but still its always great hearing your thoughts on these sort of topics!! sorry for my shoddy two cents

This comment could probably be summed up as “skill issue,” but I’ll elaborate. Never miss an opportunity to gush about this peak of a game.
Because when I first played it, I too had a hard time getting used to the controls. I was struggling with basic platforming, and didn’t love it.
But today, SRB2 is not just my favorite fangame. It’s not just my favorite 3D Sonic game. SONIC ROBO BLAST 2 IS MY FAVORITE SONIC GAME PERIOD.
Why? Let me break it down to you briefly.
In the Classics, Sonic has momentum. Unlike in other platformers, if you stop holding a direction you’re not going to stop right off. And if you get up to speed, you’re also not going to stop even if you hold the opposite direction, at least not immediately. This is what momentum is.
This is what is lacking in the Adventure games. When you get up to speed and jump, there basically is no force preventing you from near immediately stopping and turning around. At least midair. There’s no real momentum in that sense. And that seemingly small change has a huge affect on how the platforming feels.
    1) it makes it feel less like the Classics, and less like a Sonic game in my opinion.
    2) It combined with how floaty the jump is in those games zaps all challenge there could be from platforming. I don’t like the Advenure games’ platforming or find it satisfying exactly because of how easy it is.
If you actually had that momentum, you would have to manage your speed midair. So as to not overshoot jumps, you’d need to get a feel for Sonic’s momentum and when you need to start “braking” midair before you reach the platform. It’s something that would require more precision, skill, all while feeling more like the Classics.
I just described Sonic Robo Blast 2. And when you get to the level where you can maintain your flow, not having to come to a dead stop on platforms but just slow down a bit to land and then immediately jump for the next one, a flow only possible through very good control, it is some of the most satisfying platforming in Sonic…
…ever. And I’m not exaggerating even a little bit.
Also, the lack of ability to accelerate midair in the Adventure games is something that actually annoys me. I want to get up to speed when I want to.
And contrary to what you said, you can accelerate midair in the Classics. Up to Sonic’s default top speed. In fact, you accelerate to that speed faster in the air than you do trying to run across the ground.
So besides me just on principle wanting to be able to accelerate when I want to, which would include midair sometimes, I like that SRB2 does this because it feels more like the Classics.
The low jump doesn’t bother me. The levels are built around it, and I never find myself in a place where I want to jump higher than my jump or a tornado shield double jump can take me. More than anything, I honestly find the low jump funny and amusing because of how almost comically low it is.
But really, I do like that the low jump allows me to get back on the ground a bit more quickly so I can go ahead and jump to the next platform rather than having to jump over a platform, wait for Sonic to fall down onto it, and then jump to the next one. It’s flow.
I don’t like how much air drag there is in the Adventure games, especially SA1. How people felt about Frontiers’ jump killing your speed on release? Coming off Generations, that’s how I felt going into SA1 for the first time. You lose so much speed midair so quickly, and the only way to really maintain flow is reliance on the air dash.
But then the homing attack can lock on to something you did not want it to or maybe wasn’t even pointing at, making Sonic do a move that kills the rest of his speed, his speed not already killed by the air drag, when I wanted to do a move that maintains momentum.
There is also that when trying to do skips and stuff with speed jumps, sometimes you just can’t do it because you can’t go that far because Sonic basically almost stops midair and that’s annoying.
SRB2’s air drag is nowhere near as aggressive as SA1’s. And it doesn’t have a homing attack in the first place, just the air dash equivalent in the thok.
Also, because there is no homing attack, we have actual platforming and precision needed to do thjngs like badnik bounce or aim yourself at enemies to roll into them. Much better than mashing x repeatedly.
SRB2 strips away a lot of mechanics that are simply not good, that are shallow. Like the quick step which turns boost Sonic into temple run every now and then. Or the light speed attack which is a stupid move that takes no skill or thought to use but just forces you to stop and kill all your speed to charge it. Or the boost which makes most enemies obsolete.
It’s just got the good stuff. Just like the Classics.
Though there are mods that let you play around with other abilities, the level design never puts you in situations where you are forced to use them. Instead, how it works is that you have abilities that you decide to use as you see fit as you see opportunities to use them.
They’re bonuses. Because all you really need is roll and jump. From how I described it, can you see why I think this system is better?
I like how SRB2’s levels curve and stuff. If you want to maintain your flow of running through the levels, you have to precisely steer through those turns and obstacles on the path and that stuff is satisfying. Rather than just holding boost to run down hallways or holding up if we’re talking SA2.
You can’t just skip the levels and all sources of engagement with spin dash jumps like a certain official 3D Sonic game I have had a lot to say about.
There is no alternate playstyles you are forced to play as, ones not as fun as what you actually want to be doing.
The levels are varied and interesting with satisfying amounts of platforming, little automation that stops you from playing, plenty of nooks and crannies that reward an attentive and curious eye, open sections like SA1 that just look better aesthetically than some of the hallways of SA2, and an aesthetic I just love.
Also, yeah. Aesthetic. After SA1, the 3D Sonic’s lost something visually. The levels don’t feel like locations in the same way SA1’s levels do but just as levels. Maybe it’s the unique decorative geometry on the field or the levels integration into the environments or the more open areas and such or all of these.
SRB2 also has that. Yet another reason it is king.

SRB2's level design kinda cooked at Castle Eggman, hazards feel like a threat and the level design accommodates that instead of letting you just run around them in a wide space but then the rest of the game is just kinda eh, but thats the result of some of these levels being developed a long time while others still resemble older versions of themself. As for the controls, it is what it is.
"You can still gain speed in the air" isn't that always how Sonic games worked in MOST cases especially the classics?
"Whatever momentum you had on the ground when you press jump you're kinda locked into it" This is EXACTLY how Sonic Frontiers works and it BOTHERS me, if you jump from a stand still, you are not going anywhere even remotely fast. SRB2 has a weird jump arc but at least it HAS one.
I know it's not relevant here, but hearing an exact description of how I describe Frontiers movement as if it was something normal? idk did I hear this whole part wrong? It just kinda triggered me. lol

I thought I was totally alone on liking Castle Eggman because peeps were doing MAD shit talking of it in these comments. Glad to see I wasn't crazy
No not really. You could begin to push yourself in one direction mid air but you would never GAIN speed/accelerate. When you jumped, you effectively locked yourself into a momentum until you hit the ground again. With this game, you can accelerate up to max speed while in the air which is just all kinds of off. Very very different from the classics.
I mean... that's about how it works in the classics and other Sonic games, I think the issue with Frontiers isn't "not being able to gain speed in air," it's just the overall stiffness of the jump.
Not sure what you're talking about with that last bit but I'd love to clarify whatever I was talking about. Appreciate the comment brudda

As for the Frontiers thing, on second thought I might be insane but you're right, it does feel stiff and all I know is it doesn't feel good in slower platforming sections.
Which REMINDS me, some people might be criticizing new SRB2 players for not tweaking a few settings and then using Sonic Frontiers to justify that thought. IMO you shouldn't have to tweak ANY settings to make a game good,(especially not to Frontiers extent) it should be as good as possible out of box. First impressions are EVERYTHING.

This game feels like the opposite of base frontiers aight hear me out. Frontiers had a great overworld physic set with dogshit stiff controls in cyberspace
Playin SRB2 for the first time was like havibg a really good foundation for physics but its so OVERTUNED. the air dash thing is a fuckin jet beam of momentum, this would be fine if this game didnt have precision platforming, ph just jump? The jump sucks ass. Its like carl from UP broke his femur and is trying to reach his painkillers on the top shelf its fukin awful. And the speed and physics are fun i give it that when you go fast its fun but its so slippery i just do not like it.

i defo agree with your take on this game, i think its a fine game but damn the controls are so bad for a sonic game, and i do have to say that the levels at the end of the game are so annoying because they have you make precision platforming with controls that dont feel so good to begin with... and dont get me started on the challenge levels (the OST for aerial garden gives me vietnam flashbacks)

  • @Zerosaber91
    @Zerosaber91 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

My last comment I posted 5 minutes before schoolwasn't good enough to express my reasons on why I think SRB2 is the best Sonic game, official or not, so here we go.
First off; if I played like you did, I would also think this game is trash. But let me tell you how to have fun with this game.
Sonic's jump height is so low, but that's for a reason. As I've seen, most of the times when you came across a slope, you spindashed through it. But let me tell you, spin dash in this game sucks. Instead, it will be better to thok at an upwards slope and jump right when you land. This (what I call a Thok Jump) is one of the best parts of the game. Not only you gain great height (which is why Sonic's normal jump is so short in the first place), but you'll also realize you have enough height to badnik bounce. Now, believe me when I say this, badnik bouncing is what cranks this game up to 11. You'll start optimizing paths just to badnik bounce. What keeps you bouncing isn't the score, but the joy you get from reaching heights hard to get with Tails.
Also, I've seen everyone talk about camera and how options blah blah blah, so I'll skip that.
Modding. So, warning, don't be fooled by anybody that recommends you Adventure or X Sonic. Adventure Sonic will make the game easier but not that fun. X Sonic will make the game harder but not that fun. Modern Sonic, you can try and have fun, but if you're looking for any quality character mods, look to TheJackalMan's channel. He reviews EVERY character mod in-depth.
    So, in conclusion,
skill issue. Jk. This is still my most played Sonic game to date, and my go-to game when I have time. But it's understandable why most people don't like it. The base game is honestly mediocre, only thing pushing me to playing SRB2 are the mods.

But even after playing with a controller, I still can’t find my way, controls are slippery alongside the camera is a bit weird to control and the air dash is HORRIBLE. Honestly, most of the love comes from mods. I love how the game controls. I recommend playing on manual/strafe on keyboard and also having autobrake on. The game itself is great but kind of limitting on what it has in vanilla. The modded characters, modded stages and addons which change how characters behave are what allow this game to be pushed to its full potential. I recommend watching speedruns of the game whether it be modded or vanilla. You can also play online since it's a fun experience to share with others. Also, about air movemet, the game gives you a lot of freedom with it. You're able to increase and decrease your speed in the air by continuing to hold forward or holding the opposite direction. The thok is moreso used for speeding through platforming/skipping over it rather than a correction as you stated in the video. It's moreso just a misconception for newer players, whoch includes me when I started the game, to use it as a platform corrector. Im sure you'll come to like SRB2. In terms of vanilla, I understand your gripes and having criticisms are perfecty fine
