Biltong can be tough. I have always enjoyed it sliced very thin. Biltong also has more fat content. Jerky - typical sliced, marinated, then cooked. Biltong - typically cured in vinegar, air-dried, then sliced.
Am a South African _ Biltong is a beef meat that is traditionally tried by the sun naturally - the one's you are eating they used specifical machines to try that meat
Who made that biltong? I love biltong and what y'all had seemed questionable lol If it's gonna be that dry, it needs to be sliced thin. If they were gonna slice it thicker, it'd need to be wetter, and that wouldn't survive long on the shelf, so. What they went with is not a combination that works, evidently! A good thick-sliced biltong ought to be still moist and kind of like a rare steak, but what you got looked like it tasted more like the packaging it came in and had the texture of old boots. Sorry that this was your first experience of it.
The smell that comes from the biltong they are having is only really typical from bags that were meant for long-term storage. Fresh biltong from the butchery tends to have no smell at aside from the spices and usually tastes better too. Also, I don't know if the biltong they had used game meat or beef, but game meat also tends to smell more
@@SouthernTriedChannel yeah probably not, especially considering it was made in a factory. In SA, you buy it directly from a butchery, you choose your preferred moisture level (yours was probably dry as shit all things considered) along with what flavour and how fatty you want it. You never buy from a factory unless you're desperate and even then they don't just preserve it in a bag of nitrogen, they preserve it in a vacuum-sealed bag filled with chilli oil. I'll say it like this, biltong was originally a survival food and probably tasted that way when used for that purpose. Fresh is always best with biltong and judging by what your experience was, your biltong quality was probably something like "3-week old bread" levels of stale.
Hey there from South Africa I love that you are trying our snacks , don't be dissing our biltong lol biltong depends on where you buy it from it is so good, I don't really like it that much but if I have it on hand I'll eat it but I won't buy it specifically
Try Cadbury Oreo bubbly, Nik naks, Simba chips cheddar is the best for me, try mini cheddars biscuits, Lunch bar chocolate, Cadbury top deck, tennis biscuits, droëwors sticks (which directly translates to dry sausage sticks it's so good, peppermint crisp tart
That's so good yes I have tried American snacks and candy before it was given to me by a friend that went to America because she knew that America and Americans have a special place in my heart I didn't like the Hershey's tho I had the Hershey's kisses and it had this weird aftertaste for me
the already packed biltong is normally not that great, im south african and love biltong. the best biltong is if you go to a proper biltong stall and choose a piece and let them cut it into slices and that is the best biltong and softer to eat also the animal on the pack is a springbok, a buck a national animal. you guys should also try dry wors if possible to get hold of it. there is so many great snacks and chocolate and chips like simba chips peppermint crisp chocolate ghost pops ps chocolate tex chocolate i could go on for ages. try get some of the above and more.
Biltong depends on which animals. Game biltong is dry and has no fat where beef biltong is wet and has fat. Beef biltong tastes a million times better. You all had game biltong which tastes like sand
Biltong is lightyears ahead of american jerky, its not even close. Half the American jerky on the market is just overprocessed crap
As an American, I mostly agree. Biltong is the real deal. Though we do have amazing jerky.
I think many older South Africans agree on the Fizzers. They used to be a lot fizzier in my childhood years than they are now.

Imported jerky isn’t the easiest thing to find. We did our best!
@@SouthernTriedChannel Yeah for sure, it can't be easy to find over there. But rest assured it does get better than what you had XD
@wolfieinu we plan to revisit you snacks!

We definitely didn’t have the best version from what people are saying. It was beef though!

You need to find a South African butcher or shop, where biltong is sold fresh. The moment you put it in plastic, you lose the flavour.
If we can find it, we’ll certainly TRY it!
You should've gotten the Cheese Curls!
Next time! We take what we can find over here.

This isn’t a lie
They are not well. BILTONG RULES. Droewors close second.
I think we need to TRY a different brand.
Beef jerky is the same as eating a peace of leather. You clearly don't know what biltong is. Way better then jerky
We may not have had the best biltong available over here.
