Thanks for the video. Our ice maker stopped working about a month ago, I found this video on a TH-cam search. Same fridge, same issue.

Thx very much- excellent vid! Ours is 6 years old. Ice quit. Had to wait 7 months for new icemaker. Replaced it. Still no joy. I remembered the wire issue. Ours is on top hinge. I guess that’s their fix 🙃. I’m going to tackle it this weekend with butt wire connectors. We already have $200 tabletop icemaker since whirlpool never had much ice storage or output. 3 years ago I called whirlpool asking for a corrected icemaker fix. Lady almost laughed at me! Oh no sir, it’s doing EXACTLY what it’s supposed to do! I think that was code for- buddy you’ve been hoodwinked by whirlpool again! Next one will be no ice in door. Good luck everyone!

Hello, I have the same fridge as you. My ice maker stopped working a year or so ago. I took door off and I had 4 broken wires. I sawdered and heat shrank the wires . Put door back on and voila, I have ice. Thank you much for making video. There should be a recall since it seems to be a factory defect. Have a great day.

This latest fix I did has lasted over 2 months and could be the one that is needed. I rewired all the wires as far back as I could soldered in new wires. I cut the gray plastic guard on the bottom so there is no rubbing of the wires when opening and closing. I loosely zip stripped the wires to that whitish holder that is screwed to the fridge. It keeps the wires from moving too much but doesn't restrict them. If I could show a picture here I would but I don't think I can. So far so good but I think the thing that helped the most was cutting that gray plastic guard so the wires do not rub on it. It doesn't look that great but I doubt anyone will notice unless they are unusually anal.

I fixed mine yesterday, had 5 1/2 wires broken out of 8. Took the door off (neighbors helped) made a wood jig with foam to lay door on kitchen table, some wires seemed different lengths in the loom, cut small amount to even all 8 . Taped two alligator clips together to hold wires for soldering, added heat shrink, cut hard plastic sheath back 6 inches, wrapped with elect. tape, moves freely and every thing works again, the wife is happy

My 7th fix in 3 years of having this refrigerator has lasted the longest. I spliced in about 6" of extra wire for each run. I removed the small plastic black cover on the bottom of the door as well as the plastic cover that extends along the entire bottom. I don't have young children here, so I don't have to worry about anyone touching the bundled wires. I have them loosely wrapped with electrical tape so the wires will swing with the door (vs the original design kept the wires fixed). This is a horrible design, you would think that after making side by side refrigerators for 50 years they'd have this figured out by now.

by any chance was either of the wires the white or black one as I just checked and for now only have a white and black wire that are cut . Curious to know if maybe it is one of those that could be causing the ice maker to not work?

  • @pentearmacaco

Nice repair! Whirlpool deserves to wear a dunce cap until they fix the design. Part of the problem is that the bottom cover comes with sharp plastic out of the mold and cuts the cable cover over time. I did take an Xacto knife to the cover to smooth all the edges and carve a bit of a relief to let the cable slide better. Since I only had one wire cut, I could make the repair by soldering without removing the door. It's a pretty intricate soldering job and I used hotmelt glue for insulation to give it more mechanical strength.

Tried defrost, blow drier. Didn't work. Found your post luckily and yup, 1 broken wire. All fixed and getting ice again. Thank you so much for the post. On a side note, for the people that are hating on the manufacturer for a crappy design. Come on now, they made a machine that makes little cubes of ice for you in the kitchen that breaks down from time to time. They probably didn't anticipate us excessively opening and closing the door for ice cream and cans of pina colada mix while we laze around not inventing things.

I do this why the door is still on, I bought some lamp wire and stripped and wired them together. Used a heat gun and heat shrink tape to connect the wires and leave them loose. I occasionally have to rewire them, but can do it on the floor. Anyone have a link to which wire controls which? Mine isn't dropping the ice and want to "re-fix" that particular wire.

Update: I have fixed this about 3 times in the last 10 months. Right now my last resort was too strip back the wires as far back as I could on the fridge side and door side and solder all new wires in I think about 10 of them. I then heavily wrapped them and even notched out the plastic bottom plate that attaches to the fridge because I could see that the wires are rubbing up against it. I pray for the best but I think because of this Horse.... design it will just be a matter of time before that fails also. I was told by a repairman that the wiring harness can not be sold separately and you must order the whole door at a cost of about 800.00 if you could even get one. The fridge is only about 4 years old and works great otherwise but it has one major flaw which is an absolute shame.

@@outdoorswithsteveandlisa2138 Honestly if mine fails again I will most likely have no choice but to buy a new fridge.
