wii didnt need to have DVD functionality but it would have been nice and I would probably keep using it today as my go to DVD player if they had done that. Its funny they didnt include DVD functionality bc of how "consumers already have 2 or 3 DVD playback machines in their home" but the Wii was *certainly* the go to Netflix streaming device for many many consumers in the U.S. Netflix on the Wii was simple, the wii-mote was a more fitting controller for basic dvd watching compared to an xbox 360 or ps3 controller. I grew up with almost all consoles from the n64 on and was often confused or hesitant to press any of the buttons/sticks on those controllers when watching a DVD because you NEVER knew what would happen. hitting that right trigger might send it forward a chapter, fastword at 2x speed or 8x speed, or it might change the screen dimensions. It was a puzzle and i often just stuck to pressing the A or X button and hoping i wouldnt need to do anything other than pause it during a movie viewing. EDIT: Okay I get it! You can mod a wii to play DVDs whoopdeefuckingdoo. Good for you. I don’t care how easy that is. It’s not a built in function and we are talking about a console that is no longer produced. The fact you modded your wii to do something doesn’t impress anyone and doesn’t change any of my points. Your average person isn’t going to take the time to google how to mod their wii for that functionality. They probably aren’t using a wii at all anymore.
It does have DVD functionality though, and all you need to do is put a few files on the SD card and run the exploit. It's Wii has the worlds worst security and so even an idiot can soft-mod it. So, go ahead and mod your Wii to use as a DVD player! (wii.guide/ )
@@Yeen125 I don't think that's the case. It's indeed a cost cutting measure since it wouldn't likely get them much. The PS2 got success for it because it was in 2000. By 2006 almost all people already had a DVD player so it wouldn't have meant anything.
I wouldn't mind that, except the switch is needlessly expensive as it is. Somehow switching games is almost too much hassle to bother doing. Even when I'm 2 feet from it. I think it's something about that slot cover. I hate using it cuz I don't have long fingernails. @@VoidHalo They don't. Especially when working with csutomers there are even strict rules for maximum finger nail length. Not gonna lie, but I would have loved to see the curved B button be officially incorporated into the GameCube controller...before it was ultimately scrapped...
The greatest thing about the Wii's history was that Gamespot had an article predicting it's success back when it was named the Revolution. The kicker is that the article was an April Fools joke. Despite this, it was more accurate than the serious articles of the time.
Miyamoto was totally right about how the impact and legacy of the GameCube controller would live on for years, just not the part about it becoming the standard controller lol
For some reason, I always loved the original DS prototype. I remember first seeing it before I finished elementary, and I was just so excited to have a handheld with 3D graphics. I’d check Nintendo’s DS page every day to see if there was any news on it, and I think that’s why the prototype’s designs grew on me
I love the quote about the Gamecube's controller becoming a standard in 10 years time. Technically, it and the Xbox controller S kinda kinda became the basis for gaming controllers layout wise. As for the GCN's controller itself? Legend has it that Smash players still swear by that dinosaur to this day
As much as I don't understand some of Nintendo's decisions as far as hardware goes, I have a lot of respect for their history of breaking away from norms and forging their own path. Their choice to include an analog stick on the N64 controller set the standard that is still around today.
Where did that PS2 HDD picture at 3:38 come from? The only PS2 hard drive support I'm aware of is via the expansion bay/network adapter (old model) or USB ports (new model).
@@Boojakascha yeah that's what I meant by the wiimote being the replacement for the zapper in any light gun games on Wii, you were talking about a Wii U zapper tho, and the only example I can see that being used for is Duck Hunt on Wii U VC
If the C-Stick was a full control stick, the D-Pad wasn't awful, and the Z-button wasn't so awkward, the Gamecube controller would be my absolute favorite due to comfort alone. Still love the shoulder buttons too.
The GameCube standard is inly somwhat debatable since PowerA made a GameCube style controller, and 8bitdo has an adapter available for the GameCube and Wii Classic controllers. And let's not forget that the Wii U Smash Bros. adapter is compatible with almost every Switch game, with variable effectiveness.
Yeah. Even today, it's hard to fully understand why the Gamecube failed. It had so much going for it, and not many deficiencies. The really weird thing is that it had a reputation for being underpowered, even though it was considerably more powerful than a PS2.
The GameCube controller holds a special place in my heart, and it has some of the most satisfying triggers on a controller. Nowadays though I prefer something with less travel as a shoulder button. the only thing holding the classic GC controller back from playing modern games is it needs a fourth shoulder, second menu button, and clickable sticks. The layout of the face buttons does also prove to be a problem for a good chunk of games that expect you to have your thumb over B and Y at the same time
Glad the removal of D-Pad was scrapped... that's so idiotic just because casual players use analogs/joysticks more doesn't mean, competitive games do too.
They changed the clock speed on the CPU so it was exactly three times the clock speed of the GPU, so that the two operated in sync with one another, & it was done at the request of developers in order to improve performance. It wasn't a different chipset, new technology, or revised hardware, as you put it, & it definitely didn't require games to be scaled back
the rectangle power button on the older wiimote design was a little strange looking too. surprised that wasnt brought up with the other minute details.
Jesus what is with the ads?? 2 ads before the video plays, and then randomly interspersed ad breaks throughout. Finally, ads autoplay if you don't turn off after the video finishes. You don't need to ruin your videos to monetize them, guys. (the video was still really good, though)
@@GamerWho Huh.. I've never seen that before. They should do a PS4 one so we wouldn't have to delete or transfer to another bigger internal hard drive when it fills up. I'd love a PS4 HDD I could just plug in. This is all assuming you didn't mean it was an HDDVD unit. Those were fighting with Blu-ray later on in that time period., but I'm pretty sure they were only for the Xbox 360.
It's a little bit sad that they didn't go with the original two slot DS instead of what we got. That would have been way more appealing than another normal DS that can play one or two exclusive games.
I see a lot of comments praising the gc controller here, and i'd just like to say that I'm glad we have the controllers we have today. Playing something like a snes game on a gc controller is an awful experience
If they’d added double cartridge slots, they could’ve done features in games when a certain other game in the system, like, for example, if you had Kirby and Mario in the system, you could unlock a little Mario-themed level in Kirby, or vise-versa.
The original Gamecube was capable of creating stereoscopic 3D graphics like the 3DS and Luigi's Mansion was suppoesdly coded to use it. It was going to be usable via a seperae screen you could buy and attach to the Gamecube as 3D TV were not readily available back then.
That's goddamn right that the NGC Controller is the standard. Hell we're on the Switch Generation and people are STILL buying Gamecube Controllers to use for it. I never play Smash Ultimate without it...it just feels wrong.
6:20 was he wrong? Only the original X-Box had the same stick layout and the right stick is still used as the default camera controller in most games to this day. Unlike the Original X-Box controller, the GameCube had a controller that was easier to hold. In many ways, the GameCube did set the standard. The offset stick design is the preferred choice for many and it's easier to find third-party controllers with that layout than a layout more similar to the DualShock. Even the most popular third party PS4 controllers have that layout. The triggers were also universally adopted in the following generation of consoles and it can still be argued the GameCube triggers are the superior versions, certainly over that of the DualShock 3. Maybe he was on to something. It's off how that design didn't even become the standard again at Nintendo until the Switch. The Wii and Wii U pro controllers featured different layouts.
I wish the prototype GameCube controller was the last one. I like the B being a bean shape. B-ean shape makes more sense for it. The bigger grip and joystick are also more comfortable.
Man, that RALLY sucks that they had to scrap the duel cartridge slot concept from the DSi because a few people were concerned about its SIZE rather than focus on the convenience of not having to worry about having a separate case with you all the time when going out. That just sounds so petty! It would’ve been a MAJOR selling point for me over stuff like the camera and microphone too! If the Switch Pro, or whatever it ends up being called, becomes an actual reality, they HAVE to revisit this concept and make that a reality. If anything, it would’ve made that model worthy oh the Pro moniker.
3:20 Anyone else bothered by this disc being backwards? Even if it's a prototype, the read mechanism for the disc drive would obviously be on the thicker side of the console.

I think hacking is the least of Nintendo's worries considering it has inferior networking ,relies on P2P connections, their emulation is a joke, and NSO is still a garbage tier service compared to GamePass or even Playstation Essential or Playstation Premium.
7:49 Ahhh “Star Mores: Rogue Squadron”-what a game.
Having Conquest playing in the background at the beginning instantly gave me chills
wii didnt need to have DVD functionality but it would have been nice and I would probably keep using it today as my go to DVD player if they had done that.
EDIT:
Okay I get it!
Christian Slack I think it was more of an excuse to not have to pay the licensing fees to have DVD Video playback; keeping the costs down.
It does have DVD functionality though, and all you need to do is put a few files on the SD card and run the exploit. It's Wii has the worlds worst security and so even an idiot can soft-mod it. So, go ahead and mod your Wii to use as a DVD player! (wii.guide/ )
@MultiTarded The NGC does have DVD playback too, sorta. It's a specific model called the Panasonic Q but it's pretty rare.
Not if you mod it :P
@@Yeen125 I don't think that's the case. It's indeed a cost cutting measure since it wouldn't likely get them much. The PS2 got success for it because it was in 2000. At the time most people didn't have a DVD player yet so buying a PS2 got them the DVD player they wanted and a gaming system on top of that. By 2006 almost all people already had a DVD player so it wouldn't have meant anything.
I was just thinking that it would be nice to have a switch with multiple gamecard slots...
I wouldn't mind that, except the switch is needlessly expensive as it is. Somehow switching games is almost too much hassle to bother doing. Even when I'm 2 feet from it. I think it's something about that slot cover. I hate using it cuz I don't have long fingernails. Between that, and the stand/SD slot at the back, it makes me wonder if the Japanese have freakishly long finger nails.
@@VoidHalo I think that the card slot is fine but that kickstand bloody hurts when you try to open it
@@VoidHalo They don't. Especially when working with csutomers there are even strict rules for maximum finger nail length.
But to be honest, I personally cut my nails quite short and I don't have problems changing the game cards. You don't even need your finger nails. It works just with your finger, too. Not sure what so complicated or difficult actually.
People sad that the Gamecube didn't have DVD playback.

Not gonna lie, but I would have loved to see the curved B button be officially incorporated into the GameCube controller...before it was ultimately scrapped...
Dat profile pic tho. I like the circle button more honestly
Just buy one from biogenik, they have curved b buttons
The greatest thing about the Wii's history was that Gamespot had an article predicting it's success back when it was named the Revolution.
The kicker is that the article was an April Fools joke. Despite this, it was more accurate than the serious articles of the time.
The layout of the face buttons & the feel of the triggers on the NGC controller really are amazing though
The GameCube controller was the most comfortable ergonomic controller imo. I'd definitely like more controllers to use that general shape.
It still is.
@@pizdarus most are based on the SNES when it comes to the button layout
Less ads need to be on this video. I've seen 4 ads in a matter of literally 2:55 I have the video paused just to get the time stamp. Ridiculous.
Damn Wii and the controller look so fresh. I remember it so well, was magical. Love the Wii-remote.
Miyamoto was totally right about how the impact and legacy of the GameCube controller would live on for years, just not the part about it becoming the standard controller lol
3:24
is it sad that you know how much you used your Wii when you remember this illustration shows the wrong way of putting the disc in?
For some reason, I always loved the original DS prototype. I remember first seeing it before I finished elementary, and I was just so excited to have a handheld with 3D graphics. I’d check Nintendo’s DS page every day to see if there was any news on it, and I think that’s why the prototype’s designs grew on me
I love the quote about the Gamecube's controller becoming a standard in 10 years time.
Technically, it and the Xbox controller S kinda kinda became the basis for gaming controllers layout wise.
As for the GCN's controller itself? Legend has it that Smash players still swear by that dinosaur to this day
The basic layout of the Xbox and GCN controller is the same so you could argue both were.
The prototype Wiimote had a rectangle power button instead of a circle.
@4:30 WOW that Metroid Prime Hunters music brought me back.
Great :) that's what I was going for.
So this is the knowledge behind the walls behind Area 51
That GameCube controller scares me
loved this one
thanks guys
I'm glad you liked it. Thanks.
As much as I don't understand some of Nintendo's decisions as far as hardware goes, I have a lot of respect for their history of breaking away from norms and forging their own path. Their choice to include an analog stick on the N64 controller set the standard that is still around today.
8:00 - To think that THAT original SpaceWorld GameCube controller has actually been found after all these years...
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: the GameCube controller is the best console controller ever made.
Facts my dude
Where did that PS2 HDD picture at 3:38 come from? The only PS2 hard drive support I'm aware of is via the expansion bay/network adapter (old model) or USB ports (new model).
Gamecube controller is amazing. I don't understand why the button layout isn't used today... It's near perfect.
It's best for 3d games I usually have a lot of trouble with 2d games with it
@@MoeRon004 That's because of the D-pad, which is a bad one.
Love this little tidbits of extra information.
You give videos I never knew I wanted
I wish Nintendo released their Wii U light gun. A shame they never did :-(
probably because the wiimote did basically the same thing and already had multiple gun addons
@@KibSquib48 it wasn't supported very widely, was it?
Boojakascha no, but the zapper would probably also be used for barely any games
@@KibSquib48 On the Wii you mean?? Plenty of good gun cradles, controllers and games there!
@@Boojakascha yeah that's what I meant by the wiimote being the replacement for the zapper in any light gun games on Wii, you were talking about a Wii U zapper tho, and the only example I can see that being used for is Duck Hunt on Wii U VC
Nobody still talks about gamecom how it had two carts for the games.
so that's why the DSi still calls the card slot "slot 1"
If the C-Stick was a full control stick, the D-Pad wasn't awful, and the Z-button wasn't so awkward, the Gamecube controller would be my absolute favorite due to comfort alone. Still love the shoulder buttons too.
Seriously, those shoulder triggers were godly. Smooth analog travel AND dat click at the end. So nice.
This type of content is like crack to me lol. Great job as usual man
11:10 -> Don't forget that the prototype Nunchuk (or Wiimote?) has a bulkier connector.
Great video! Hope to see more!
I don't know why but that gamecube controller looks cursed
I want that Gamecube pad with the Y2K tilted fonts.
I love these videos so much!
Two game slots? Wonder if the Pokemon Company stepped in to stop that from happening. Would've made the dual versions they always release pointless.
Imagine if the wii is as power as xbox 360
Madness
The GameCube standard is inly somwhat debatable since PowerA made a GameCube style controller, and 8bitdo has an adapter available for the GameCube and Wii Classic controllers. And let's not forget that the Wii U Smash Bros. adapter is compatible with almost every Switch game, with variable effectiveness.
Great vid! I’d watch more!
GameCube is the best system and very underrated
I still want to see a copy of Luigi’s mansion with beta ghosts
Yeah. Even today, it's hard to fully understand why the Gamecube failed. It had so much going for it, and not many deficiencies. The really weird thing is that it had a reputation for being underpowered, even though it was considerably more powerful than a PS2.
Jason Blalock yeah, especially since Nintendo considered putting a better cpu in the system.
But that beta disc would be awesome to find somewhere
The DS Lite is still to this day one of Nintendo's slickest looking consoles bar none.
Yea I love it's Apple inspired design
The GameCube controller holds a special place in my heart, and it has some of the most satisfying triggers on a controller. Nowadays though I prefer something with less travel as a shoulder button. the only thing holding the classic GC controller back from playing modern games is it needs a fourth shoulder, second menu button, and clickable sticks. The layout of the face buttons does also prove to be a problem for a good chunk of games that expect you to have your thumb over B and Y at the same time
Top post! 👏🏻
I LOVE that intro
Glad the removal of D-Pad was scrapped... that's so idiotic just because casual players use analogs/joysticks more doesn't mean, competitive games do too.
Where is the song at 5:30 from? I know it from somewhere!
Maybe an old Game?
Metroid Prime Hunters?
6:25 In a way Miyamoto was correct in regards to smash in particular
TheWolfgabe yes
They changed the clock speed on the CPU so it was exactly three times the clock speed of the GPU, so that the two operated in sync with one another, & it was done at the request of developers in order to improve performance. It wasn't a different chipset, new technology, or revised hardware, as you put it, & it definitely didn't require games to be scaled back
the rectangle power button on the older wiimote design was a little strange looking too. surprised that wasnt brought up with the other minute details.
5:13 RIP Jungle Climber
Jesus what is with the ads?? 2 ads before the video plays, and then randomly interspersed ad breaks throughout. Finally, ads autoplay if you don't turn off after the video finishes. You don't need to ruin your videos to monetize them, guys.
(the video was still really good, though)
What is that little box next to the full size PS2. I don’t remember any models looking like that little thing.
HDD
@@GamerWho Huh.. I've never seen that before. They should do a PS4 one so we wouldn't have to delete or transfer to another bigger internal hard drive when it fills up. I'd love a PS4 HDD I could just plug in.
This is all assuming you didn't mean it was an HDDVD unit. Those were fighting with Blu-ray later on in that time period., but I'm pretty sure they were only for the Xbox 360.
7:42 spaceship Porygons :)
What is the song in the intro? At 0:01?
AlphaDog Saturn Valley from ‘Earthbound’
I've never heard *THICC* so much in one video
fun to learn about all these prototypes
It's a little bit sad that they didn't go with the original two slot DS instead of what we got. That would have been way more appealing than another normal DS that can play one or two exclusive games.
I see a lot of comments praising the gc controller here, and i'd just like to say that I'm glad we have the controllers we have today. Playing something like a snes game on a gc controller is an awful experience
Playing Mario World on the Wii with it was miserable, but I moreso chalk that up to button mapping not so much the controller itself.
09:17 What's a "sat nav remote"?
A remote control for a car satellite navigation system.
Has such a thing ever existed?
Are you kidding? I want that dual game Nintendo DS. It would feel more convinent
What about NES, SNES, etc.?
I would love to hold a prototype GameCube controller some day, just so I know what could've been.
I don't know why but for me the most exciting thing here is the window above the Gamecube discs, that would have been cool!
Nintendo loves to innovate....
Nintendo: Mario Mario Mario Mario Mario.......
Was the plug on the Wii Remote a USB before release or what
You forgot about the cheddar cheese wii prototype that Thomas game docs talked about
Man, that RALLY sucks that they had to scrap the duel cartridge slot concept from the DSi because a few people were concerned about its SIZE rather than focus on the convenience of not having to worry about having a separate case with you all the time when going out.
Well, its 2020 and theyre still selling GC controllers for a console that came out 3 generations after it. So Miyamoto was right lmao.
Actually the quote is "Power comparable to the original Xbox"
Am I the only one who noticed he said Universal Gravitation instead of topsy turvey?
That's what it's called in all but one region.
Liam Robertson - Game History Guy huh. I mean ik it was called that in the pal region but not in all but the NA. Cool
Still waiting for that platinum and lime green wiimote
I remember that I use to owned the Silver color GameCube console but I don’t have it anymore. I cannot remember what to it though.
3:20 Anyone else bothered by this disc being backwards? Even if it's a prototype, the read mechanism for the disc drive would obviously be on the thicker side of the console.
It's not a proof-of-concept illustration?
