    I have this head unit. I love it! But I have an amplifier also and it works amazingly! If everything is set up the right way, there's no distortion whatsoever! You can build your own system with this in your car and you would be perfectly OK! But again, assuming the amplifier is hooked up correctly. You could even go up to 50 (which I don't) with no distortion or anything whatsoever. I recommend this HU

      Hi Brandon! So glad to hear you're loving this head unit :) I love this deck too, I think it's a fantastic value for consumers with a ton of features for the money. I also like the layout, look and functionality. I think what I was seeing on the oscilloscope and then later duplicated with the DD1+ was harmonic distortion which is not always an audible type of distortion. Some can hear THD ratings of less than 1% and others cannot. Some can hear clipping distortion and others can not. Some can hear distortion from compression (like on SiriusXM) and others can't. In general any kind of distortion is often a lot harder to hear on subs which is one of the reasons I like to test using the oscilloscope so I can let clients know safe operating levels for their equipment. The reason I'm thinking this was harmonic distortion is I don't usually ever see funky wave forms like that at lower volumes. I decided to look at the actual ratings to get a better idea. This head unit has a rating of < 1% THD+N and S/N ratio of 80 dBA. For comparison a Kenwood eXcelon DDX9907XR has THD rating of .01% and S/N radio of 98.5. Basically meaning, yeah, the head unit has a usable front, rear and sub pre-out, but it's definitely a bit noisier or not quite as quiet/clean as some of the higher end models out on the market. Having said that, it's still a great buy, I like it. So glad you're enjoying yours!

    11:50. Around 10v rms before clipping is almost 25w at 4ohm load so it is doing above it's rated power of 20w. The chip they using is from toshiba and capable of driving 2ohm loads and provide close to 50w. Datasheet says 70w @ 10%thd 2ohm load but no one gonna listen at 10% thd. Sony doesn't mention 2ohm capability probably cus the heatsink is not large enough.

  • @KuntalGhosh
    @KuntalGhosh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    7:30 that is probably your scope probe not set correctly and not the headunit. That's not clipping thats distortion. Clipping is when top & bottom flatten outs. You have a bit of distortion and it could easily be uncalibrated oscilloscope probe.

    Hello,
    I have the same stereo, do you know by any chance what cable I need to mirror my Samsung s21 Ultra to the screen?
    Thank you, great video btw.

    • @carstereochick
      @carstereochick  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Gin! Well, if you mean "mirroring" like how you can mirror your phone to a TV through an HDMI adapter, this radio does not support that feature. If you mean for the wired Android Auto feature? Any high quality USB A to USB C charge and sync cable should work. I've had good luck with Anker cables. The shorter the better. If you have any trouble connecting, be sure to connect your cable directly into the Sony USB input. Sometimes USB extensions or flush mount adapters (or factory USB retention adapters) can interfere with connectivity. I hope that helps!

    Can you please review the Sony XAVAX 3200? I notice you have done the 150, 4000, and 6000. I am highly considering getting the 3200 and you do really well reviews that are very thorough. If you do make this review please use your audio detection on it as well like you did in this video. I want to see if there is any of the distortion. Or if you already know the answer and can just reply that would be helpful also. Thank you 🙏

      Thanks Jimmy, that's a great idea. I haven't gotten around to testing the XAV-AX3200. It is a great value and a perfect fit for clients looking for a basic Apple CarPlay/Android Auto upgrade and they're don't need a Maestro compatible radio and don't plan on adding aftermarket amplifiers.
      It is lower voltage on the pre-amp, so it wouldn't be my 1st choice if you're planning on building an aftermarket system. There are a lot of sales going on right now and starting next week with Kenwood and Alpine. If you're going to do aftermarket amps, I'd rather see you with the XAV-AX6000 (which Sony has a smoking deal right now - $150 off regular price) or something like an Alpine iLX-W650. Both have a higher voltage pre-amp and confirmed clean signal.
      I have a few videos on the XAV-AX6000 - make sure you check your phone settings with whatever one you go with: th-cam.com/video/SUAGlo_zDGg/w-d-xo.html

    Does the Android auto/apple carplay wireless ??? Or wired

    • @carstereochick
      @carstereochick  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This model is wired connection only. Wireless is usually a big jump in price. Like the Alpine iLX-507 is $749.99 or Kenwood DMX9707s is $799. There are adapters out there, basically a wireless adapter you can get for $150 that connects to the USB of any wired CarPlay/Android Auto radio and creates a wireless connection, HOWEVER, these adapters do reduce sound quality.

  • @damon323
    @damon323 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ugh! Annie, please help. Lol! I installed this head unit in my 2016 4Runner and I’m kinda regretting it. It’s the one and only thing I went cheap on.
    So many factors involved, I know. But for quick reference, I have it hooked up to a 5 channel JL Audio RD900/5. Put all new nice door speakers in(8 total) and a 8 inch JL Audio W1v2.
    (Amp is set at perfect voltage for all speaker outputs. Clipping indicator works perfectly, verified with a multimeter)
    Please set me straight…
    Would a different head unit with higher voltage and better sound processing make a huge difference? My stock stereo sounded better with just the door speaker upgrade

    • @carstereochick
      @carstereochick  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh man! So sorry to hear that. There are a couple factors to consider here. Partly, when I consider the output capability of the 8W1v2 (great sound quality sub, but not high output) and the power rating to the interiors at 75 RMS per channel, I kind of feel like the balance between bass and interiors is going to be off. You probably don't have enough bass using that amp with that sub.
      One way around that from a tuning perspective is to lower the gains on the fronts and rears so you have more bass in the overall balance, but obviously this also reduces overall output.
      The other factor to consider is where the head unit gives you the most voltage/sensitivity with the sub level. With Alpine for example, to really get the 4 volts on some of the more popular models (iLX-W650 or iLX-407) you have to have the sub level at max and volume at max.
      But sometimes we want that same type of bass level at lower volumes, we don't want to have to go to full max volume to get the impact desired. So that's one of the reasons I like Kenwood a lot. On most of their decks you're getting the rated voltage on the sub (4 volts or 5 volts) with the sub level at 0 at max volume. If you put the sub level to 10, you can get that same level of voltage/impact on the sub at a lower overall volume like 29 or 30. But that also lowers your "max" volume level. However, if you tune the amp knowing that's your max volume, you may get a much more desirable balance on the bass to the interiors with a higher voltage Kenwood model.
      It just gives you more flexibility in tuning. So partly I think the issue is head unit choice, but partly I think the issue is balance of bass to overall volume levels especially with that sub. I'm assuming you have the sub in a sealed enclosure? Which I'm sure is quite accurate and tight, but not very efficient. Ported will definitely be more efficient/have more output, but requires more airspace/larger enclosure. Does that all make sense?

      It is wired connection only for CarPlay. As Alex said, the wireless models are a lot pricier. There are wireless adapters you can get aftermarket where there is a dongle that connects to the radio's USB and creates a wireless CarPlay connection. It looks cool, but I am hesitant to review or carry/sell a product when the manufacturer 1) Has no US based product support 2) Is clearly photoshopping their radio onto the dash of a newer Ford F-150. Check it out, here is that radio on their website.
      www.myatoto.com/index.php?m=content&c=index&a=show&catid=15&id=68
      They just overlaid that onto the factory 4.2" Ford radio dash, pretty poorly too I might add. Here is what the aftermarket radio installation looks like for that vehicle if you're using a generic aftermarket stereo:

      Seems sketch.

    I'm using this to run a full aftermarket system and it sounds pretty good. I just sold my Pioneer 80prs and put this in my car over the weekend to get the Carplay. There is no contest between the two head units, but I wanted the Carplay and wasn't paying through the nose to get it. I'm using the pre-outs to feed a Dayton408 DSP and running three amps from there (3 way front stage(8, 3.5, tweet), rear fill(6.5), and sub). It sounds good with the Dayton doing the processing and the head unit just delivering signal. I don't compete with this system, but it sounds pretty amazing for what it is.

      @@carstereochick I actually want to add to this comment. After finally getting the time to set amp gains with an oscope, Everything sounds clear, but I miss the 5V preouts. There is a huge difference in the output from the amp. I ordered a line driver with 10V outputs to solve that little issue so we will see. My other minor issue with the deck is no aux input. This wouldn't be an issue most of the time, but when tuning with a DSP and using REW from the computer it becomes an issue. I'm working to find a work around for this problem. I'm thinking an aux to USB adapter should work. Any experience with that?

      @itsalwaysfriday9766 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The line driver was the missing piece for sure. The difference is easily noticeable. That being said, I agree with you that you shouldn't build a system around this deck. It can be done, but it is harder than it needs to be and requires buying some other components and a lot of time to get it sounding right.

      It is a wired connection so Android Auto should launch when you connect your phone using a quality USB C cable. I've had the best luck with "Anker Powerline II USB-C to USB 3.1" which supports high speed data. If you're having trouble, be sure to use a shorter cable, 3ft or less and try connecting it directly to the radio's USB pigtail rather than going through a USB flush mount accessory or using any type of adapter that re-uses the OEM USB port. I will mention I have seen one client have a bizarre issue with his Samsung where the fast charging setting on the phone was totally freaking out the head unit. I don't know if it was something wrong with his phone where it was trying to pull more current than the radio puts out (1.5 amps), but his phone kept locking up the radio and it would not launch Android Auto. As soon as I turned off high speed charging, I was able to get Android Auto launched and the radio stopped locking up. Android Auto can be finicky, I have a post on my blog about different tips and tricks to try if it's giving you a hard time.
      carstereochick.com/2021/07/29/resolving-android-auto-connectivity-issues/

Both are iDatalink Maestro compatible.
      In general, Kenwood radios usually provide the most support/features with iDatalink since they were the 1st to partner together. You may want to check out my latest video on the DMX709s, it's a fantastic value and Maestro compatible. I actually mention how this would be perfect for an older ford pick up with the 8" Ford radio as an example in the video!

Just a generic title for what's playing and the ability to pause/play or skip tracks. To select a playlist or artist for example, you'd have to do that from your phone. I believe when Android Auto was first released it required a minimum screen size of 6.8" which left very little room on the face of the radio for a USB. There are some head units out there that will do it now, but the benefit to a rear mounted USB is we can flush mount it in a convenient location like lower dash or center console. This way you don't have to have a cord hanging down out of the face of the radio.

      Like the KW-M560BT? That is a nice deck, I’m sure cleaner pre-amp even if still low voltage. Very similar to the DMX47s or DMX4707s from Kenwood as far ad features go, but also about $100 more than the Sony.
