One of my favorite parts of this (one of many) is at the end, 4:45. It seems like Ryan forgets his little tiddle for a second. You see him react like "Oh shit, I forgot to start this", then crushes it. Also, Jake's eyes widen like "How much longer can I hold this post?" and Jackson looks at him expectantly. One of my favorite jams by them.
Moments like 2:05 with the "You guys!" And 1:45 with the "you stupid lead" make this song such an interesting and different piece. It's almost not even a song, it's more of a performance.
They came 9th I believe. Really impressive considering they are a young quartet compared to say, Main Street, and they did 4 new ones this year. That takes guts. Maybe they'll revamp 'Dinah' for next year
The whole song is amazing but the part from 2:48 - 3:00 is so addictive to listen to, the way they up the tempo and overlap each other (sorry I don't know the technical term for this!) it sounds SO good and I wish there was a longer section like this to listen to. Something I really love about NF4 is how so many of their songs sound like a medley with constant switch ups, be it pitch, pacing etc. That's not even to mention their perfected comedy skills. They really are the complete package when it comes to entertainment.
the term you're looking for is countermelody, and yes it's quite rare in barbershop - the standard practice is for it to be in unison for almost the whole song
Underrated part at 3:05 hearing Ryan and Joey's part together and then seeing Ryan's arms sway as his notes go higher and lower like going over a hill.
The arranger, Patrick McAlexander, went to my high school. He also started the mens acapella group there that I later directed when I was there. He is crazy good! I LOVE this arrangement!!!
Yep came 6th this year. In 2014 they were 16th. In 2015 they were 14th. In 2016 they were 11th. In 2017 they finally broke the top 10, coming 9th. Then in 2018 placed 6th. So here's hoping they're top 3 next year.
When they said “it’s our signature” I was waiting for “does that mean we’re gonna get silver?” But then realized this video is a couple years too old for that😂😂😂
It’s crazy to watch the 2016 version and see just how much they improved on the song in one year. This is by far one of their best performances to date
Last year finished 11 I think I think they've improved so much I have them in my top 5 this year I love them they blend so well love the timbre of the lead the tenor isn't piercing I think they're brilliant
i just noticed how on the last notes when Jake holds his note he exchanges a short look with ryan, who in turn looks like he forgot there was a part left. I dont know if this was in the choreography or not, either way i find it pretty funny seeing such small elements in their interactions ^^
They are incredible, you don't need an award to certify that, you have a fan for life boys , for life 💖 thank you for you amazing talent and comedy, you guys bring the barbershop sound to a new generation , 💖
Rosie Rennie - You got the loveable one (Joey-Keith), the awkward one (Ryan-Zac), the charismatic one (Jake-Eugene) and the dad one (Jackson/Jaxon- Ned). The Barbershop Trys.
honestly same. I'm in a call with a friend and he heard me giggling and called me out on it. I have never been so adamant about something sounding this amazing before.
Having just watched their 2023 performance, and then going back to this, Joey's character progression is hilarious. 2017 Joey's a pretty normal guy. 2023 Joey is a sort of idiot-savant who doesn't seem to know how he ended up in a quartet XD 2017: 'WELL, yeah, yeah, y'know...' 2023: 'yYEeS, it'S ME, joEy bUSs, fRoM tHE nEwfAnGLEd FOuR~'
These guys are just feel good. Leave you with a goofy smile on your face. (For Calvin&Hobbes fans that's the 1 after Hobbes kisses Calvin then says: only a lot more so! 😁)
Evolution of a barbershop fan: >finds NF4 >”Omg the Newfangled Four are so good” >gains perspective by listening to more different quartets >”Wait there are much better quartets than NF4” >starts singing in a quartet >learns to appreciate how difficult barbershop actually is >”Omg the Newfangled Four are so good” (by “a barbershop fan”, I mean me) (I have come full circle)
@@MisterShaggyDoo Well, barbershop can be quite intense and it takes some time to get used to the sound. It took me a couple months to start listening to anything besides NF4, it really is an acquired taste. Main Street is another quartet that’s quite accessible for people who haven’t listened to a lot of barbershop yet. My favourite quartet now is Instant Classic, their ballads were definitely a little too much for me at first (I love them now) but their uptunes were quite fun from the beginning. Another one is Ringmasters, their sound is not as bright as Instant Classic’s which made it a little easier for my ears to adjust - their legendary Notre Dame Medley was the first song of theirs I listened to and it’s still one of my favourite barbershop performances of all time. Also, if you can, I would really recommend learning some tags to sing yourself. Even if you don’t have anyone to sing with, just find some tag videos on youtube to sing along with. That’s how I got started and it really helped me find my way into the harmonies.
Would someone kindly give me the order of the final ten in judges scoring order p,ease I know main st won sadly I'll miss those guys but these guys aren't bad Thank you
I am still trying to figure out if the Bass had to cough and played it really good or if it was on purpose ... the "oh no" after that doesnt make it easier...
"I hate you guys."
"It's ok."
Yup, that sums up most group artistic endeavors XD
Ain’t that the truth
wow right ass i read your comment saying i hate you guys the song says i hate you guys.
2:05 "you guys" was absolute butter. They're just monsters in this chart, absolutely loved this.
That whole chord was just so enjoyable how they blended into each other. Pure eargasm. Awesome.
From "why’d you" on for that few measures was absolute joy
That seamless transition in and out of that ragtime feel 😍
Was it just a G on octaves?
@@GaninIsMyName 2 years late, it's a minor chord but it was blended so perfectly that it's amazing
Wait a minute. You can actually hear what note the baritone is singing at the end and you know it’s him
@Kristopher Chavez you're actually not supposed to hear them..
You know you're not supposed to hear them right?
@Kristopher Chavez the baritone is supposed to make the chords work and blend with the other 3 parts, not be heard on it's own
In this the bari ends up singing some melody. The way that the parts were split up is perfect

That was in the song the previous year as well. I believe it is intentional to add more comedy to the piece
IM DEAD FR
Nah did you see how Jake’s eyebrows start to furrow? That man was pissed 😭😭
it’s a bit
*argues in barbershop* (2:00)
It's my favorite part
4:46 when Ryan realizes that Jake has been holding the note
His look ajakakja just "uAGAHHAKAajjaa okay frick uh-"
Moments like 2:05 with the "You guys!" And 1:45 with the "you stupid lead" make this song such an interesting and different piece. It's almost not even a song, it's more of a performance.
these guys need their own channel
rexxed757 they do
TheNewfangledFour
i stan
join me
You’re not gonna believe this…. THEY HAVE A CHANNEL.
They have a channel
"Throwback" and "Signature" were also barbershop quartets competing, in case you didn't catch it.
0:12 I know this isn't music related, but Ryan's dead eye stare as he sings here for some reason is just funny😂
I love it, when I first noticed it I was like that’s absolutely amazing and fit’s the mood of the chart so well
You know a quartet is good when it gets hard to distinguish their voices... they blend so well!
Just when I think I've learned how to pick Ryan out of the four I lose him. The eternal struggle.
Its easier when you watch his lips.
The baritone is supposed to mix the other harmonies to give it a fuller sound :) It's good at what he does.
0:38 Ryan really grooves XD
Lol
You see that these guys have the best arrangements at 1:53 when the separate texts cross over with the word “lead”. So good!
They came 9th I believe. Really impressive considering they are a young quartet compared to say, Main Street, and they did 4 new ones this year. That takes guts. Maybe they'll revamp 'Dinah' for next year
They have 2 win's under their belt as well. One in 2013
@@slugerknot well yes, but they are at college level and a district competition. The highest they placed in internationals was 6th in 2018 & 19

Loool anyone else see that moment of panic on Ryan's face at 4:45-4:46? Hahaha
Underrated part at 3:05 hearing Ryan and Joey's part together and then seeing Ryan's arms sway as his notes go higher and lower like going over a hill.
This whole thing is amazing but I think no one’s talked about Joey’s lil kiss on Ryan’s head (3:00) yet
4:40 I LOVE that ending! Especially that last harmonic note! Bravo!
2:48 - this whole section just makes me feel all sorts of strange pleasurable things, like watching a brook or someone rubbing my neck.
Newfangled four: the try guys of barber shop quartets
Funny Jones i hate this but i have to respect this as a fact bc it is
You're right and I hate that
I completely agree and I dont know why- is it because you're right? I think it is!
yes
I hate how right you are

0:34 d- did we just get coconut malled?
Calling it now: They're gonna win in the next three years.
It's happened!
Edwardzzzz9 They Didn't Win...
They made the top 10, I believe. Hoping 2018 will be their year.
Maisie Summers specifically they got sixth right? They keep inching forward. They are future winners that's for sure

Joey at 1:48. beautiful voice.
I love how big Ryan smiles at the end pose!
Can we just talk about that little melody that Ryan had at the end. Reasons why I love the Baritone part.

"What kind of music do you listen to?"
"Its complicated"
If these guys would go on a show like America's Got Talent they would slay and become world famous instantly!
1:25 was brilliant!
"you guys, been talking crazy" was a lovely part!
Last year finished 11 I think
I think they've improved so much I have them in my top 5 this year I love them they blend so well love the timbre of the lead the tenor isn't piercing I think they're brilliant
They finished 11th place last year, 9th place this year!
how you guys know ? is there is a website ?
www.barbershop.org/contests/contest-results It's a bit late, but here's the site including their 6th place finish this year.
6th twice in a row. That has to be a motivation killer. I hope they improved enough to be able to get 5th this year.
All this time and nobody has talked about that killer note on “tango” led in by Joey at 1:57... wow!
How do these guys not win every year???
I actually adore these men
I love the melody at the start
“watcha u got girl” 😂
Wish they would rehash this in the modern age. Love this tune
i just noticed how on the last notes when Jake holds his note he exchanges a short look with ryan, who in turn looks like he forgot there was a part left.

They should totally try to do something like this!!!
Is it cause they are three white guys and an Asian (I think) who are best friends doing what they love and are really funny?
Rosie Rennie - You got the loveable one (Joey-Keith), the awkward one (Ryan-Zac), the charismatic one (Jake-Eugene) and the dad one (Jackson/Jaxon- Ned).
The Barbershop Trys.
Not sure how it's an insult. Both groups are great. One just sings, the other trys things they haven't before or that's not common for guys to do.
Man, you really have to love the Newfangled Four!
my favourite song from tn4 🥰
I love this group! Ryan, you are missed. Glad you were still there for this onem
These four are delightful! 💜😂🎵
I'd say this is the best barber shop ever, plus smashing choreography, I am in awe
1:54 onwards has been replayed at least 15 times by me tonight
Same, it sounds incredible
i love one (1) barbershop quartet
2:24 very brief but very strong overtone
What happened to "Gotta get back to Georgia" joke 😂 had me dying
Daniel Pham I didn't get it...
the last part was something else
Anyone else hear that incredibly loud overtone in the last chord? VERY Impressive!
That high B overtone on the tag
I think it's an f#, but they have a B undertone on the tag which is unbelievable
There’s definitely a screamin’ B overtone there... Joey Buss is too good!
2:00 - 2:05 This part is ruining my life honestly
honestly same. I'm in a call with a friend and he heard me giggling and called me out on it. I have never been so adamant about something sounding this amazing before.
Literally same like it’s just so nice to my ears lol
Absolute BUTTA
I genuinely love it
lovely
Even better than last year 👌
Coming here after finding out they’re breaking up 😭
Jackson is made of lungs
Hahah. They are hilarious!
Hello Judy
How are you doing today?
Having just watched their 2023 performance, and then going back to this, Joey's character progression is hilarious. 2017 Joey's a pretty normal guy. 2023 Joey is a sort of idiot-savant who doesn't seem to know how he ended up in a quartet XD
2017: 'WELL, yeah, yeah, y'know...'
2023: 'yYEeS, it'S ME, joEy bUSs, fRoM tHE nEwfAnGLEd FOuR~'
And thus the shade begain
I mostly watch this for Joey's little solo.
Fantastic!
I would really like to see them sing this now
it looks like ryan almost forgot to come in for his part on the tag
Part of the performance, it’s supposed to look that way, but if he actually forgot he wouldn’t make such a show of it
But look at jakes face at that part I think he did mess up
See previous performance, same actions
You can see the improvement from last year!
These guys are just feel good.

i'm guessing it was a real cough, cause you see jake keep futzing with his nose throughout the rest of the performance ;D
if they win anytime soon, they earned it.
I LOVE THEM WITH ALL MY HEART I AM NOT GOOD AT EMOTIONS THO
I have to admit that I went on the Barbershop Harmony Society site since I want to see what all these inside jokes are.
take those poses and put them in a jojo anim!

"and not even a funny one"
