do not read my commend if you do not want to know what the horror behind the jar is for those unaware: there is a meme where someone put a rainbowdash figurine from my little pony in a jar and then over time filled the jar with a bodily fluid I am not allowed to state here on youtube. thus why "big jar full of thing" is kinda cursed
Back in second edition units had to shoot at enemy closest to them, so you would screen your orks with a loads of gretchin and the enemy would waste their phase shooting at them.
The more I watch, the more I love your gentleness and the slice of life content that pops up occasionally. Thanks again for a great video. Also 2nd edition gretchin are awesome, if dangerously spikey!
Love these old guys, i've 2 squads of 30 of them in my blood axe contingent. Sculpted the Runtherds into drill sergeants so it looks like the grots are standing on parade ground.
Way way back in 09 I was building a speed freaks army. I needed a cheap troops option to hold backfield objective so I wanted grots. Then I thought, how do grots keep up with fast moving orks? No vehicles and legs too short to run. Then I had a thought. Who remembers those plastic Fischer Price quad skates designed to strap on over kids shoes? So I scratch built strap on quad skates for 10 grots using plasticard and green stuff. Then I couldn't have the grot herder walking, so I used some old model airplane wheels and plasticard to make a cross between a chariot and Segway scooter for him to ride. I love them, but I will never do all that again.
I'm more impressed you didn't do a 69 joke the whole video. :D One thing I do like doing for my Guard, they all do get the same basic look, but as they do things of note, they get a little more flourish. Like one guardsman that successfully blew up a Hammerhead tank, and in the resulting explosion, also took out a Crisis Suit. As a result, he got an explosion onto his shoulder, and a couple of krak grenades for his visual loadout.
very nice. I think I have about the same amount to paint too since 2nd edition. I remember in 3rd you could used grots as a meat shield for orks and mobs of 30 were common . lol
I agree about the model "cheerleader effect" if you have a lot of models that are decent looking (even with some mistakes) it kind of reads as one good looking army
I have a few of these classic Gretchin, along with Orks of the same era. I've always liked the few Gretchin that have been available, especially the later ones, as well as the plastic Goblins for WHFB, because of how much character they have. That's why I've also been a bit bummed out that the Gretchin have not been available in larger boxed sets on sprues, or more visible in general. One of my dream projects is to make an all-Gretchin 40K army, where they compensate for their runtiness with insane tech.
I also wish they were more front and center for orks, but 40k seems to be trying to simplify things and are getting rid of the more "fun" ork stuff. Still, making vehicles with lots of them all over the place is fun and there is potential for an all gretchin themed army.
Whenever I'm batch painting, I like to consider what the "next step" is that is going to make the biggest difference. I.e. what will feel like the biggest accomplishment. Eventually you'll get it done or end up being satisfied with something that is pretty much there rather than one or two perfect features and primer!
Looks fun though I'd probably debate between a few audiobooks or just putting Blind Guardian albums on repeat to get something like this all done. One Ork trick I like is going with a different green contrast paint for a squad or nice medium green then try a different shade for some so there an easy bit of variety. What kind of tape did you use to secure them to the tray for the initial paint?? Been using a strip of wood & double sided foam tape which works but alternative brands is always good when one runs out.
Good call with the contrast, that works really well. I just use painters tape wrapped backwards, it holds long enough to get the job done, and it can be quite a bit cheaper than the double sided stuff.
What’s the name of that Totally Awesome stuff you use for stripping minis? I don’t know if it’s available in the UK. Does it need straining every so often to get all the loose bits of flaked off paint out or can you just leave it all in the jar? Like you said in the video, it does look cool as a piece in the hobby space, like a science lab.
LA's Totally Awesome and unfortunately not available in the UK, or at least for the same price as we get it here in the US. It's $1 a bottle here, and widely available. I'm not sure what the exact equivalent is, but any kind of concentrated degreaser will do the job. Purple Power, Simple Green, things like that. I haven't had to strain it, but it depends on the models going in. I put some with lots of black paint and now the jar is almost pure black, so I will probably replace it when I go back to it next time. Otherwise if the paint doesn't cloud up the solution it settles on the bottom, so you could theoretically strain it if you needed to clean the liquid.
I love your content. But I wish you would put the paint and tools that you're using on screen. Like were those Citadel base paints? Maybe contrasts? (I doubt it)
He used to do that, but he stopped. He talked about it on Paint Bravely, that he didn't want people feeling like they needed specific paint lines to accomplish the same goals. Though I do sometimes wish he'd share specifics again.
Sometimes I do mention paints, when I find some quality about them that I really like, either color or consistency, or whatever, and when it applies to a specific use case. I mostly use Pro Acryl and the new Army Painter Fanatics. That's what I used to do all of the base coating for these guys, and even then, if I had picked Khorne Red from Citadel instead of the Dark Red from Pro Acryl, you might not even be able to see the difference. Whatever red you have on hand isn't necessarily the same red that I have, so even if I were to say here is the red I'm using, if all you had was some other red, it will still do the same thing in the end. It would be better for you to just go for it than to put it off until that new red came in the mail or you went and picked it up. That's really why I stopped mentioning it. At the end of the day you should be painting with whatever you have on hand and not buying another red that maybe looks different. Heck, most of these paint lines have conversion charts for citadel colors, which basically tells you that most of the colors out there are the same or very close anyway! I hope that helps, or at least makes sense lol.
Reading the headline, I thought that this was going to be a crossover between Casey and Josh from "The Pickle Jar". That could have been a very mellow interaction.
Not sure if anyone can help me. I have a couple sprues that are primed black. How long should I keep them in the isopropyl? Seems like it should be left for days. I’ve heard people say 40 minutes. Obviously didn’t work
If they are superglued together then there is CA glue DE-Bonder that works amazingly well. If they were put together with plastic glue then you might be able to soak them in isopropyl or LA's totally awesome and loosen them up, but those pieces are more than likely permanent and will need to be cut off carefully. Isopropyl also works to soften CA glue after a long soak, and you can try putting them in the freezer overnight and getting that glue brittle to the point that the pieces just snap off at the joints. All in all, it's just kind of a pain and you need to try a few things before cutting into them, but it usually ends up working out with one of these methods.
i had a dangerous thought recently, repainting my necron army from starter and elite box from 9th edition starter boxes, the total is 30+ minis. i have a repainting experience with the ultrasmurfs from those 2 same boxes before i sold them but i dread the day i repaint them i'm not happy with the paint job but at the same time repainting 30+ necrons can and almost did drive me mad LOL
I love your videos!! Pickle jar is funny to me but makes a lot of sense. I might use that. I wanted to ask though, I like painting but I often fall into doing it then falling out (Irl stuff, or being disillusioned by my art skills). Is that a problem, model wise? Yeah, 69 all at once is a bit rough. I did split them up into smaller batches for the color changes, so that helped, but the skin, leather, and metallics were all at once. I did finish Resident Alien on Netflix though...so that was a bonus lol
I dont want my comment to seem critical, as this a painting channel and the painting tips are great. I would have painted according to how I would play them. 3 squads 23 each. 3 different paint schemes. May 3 20 unit squads and save the rest for gun crew or something. One 69 unit squad is too difficult to play. 3 smaller units cause more chaos. They can protect your important Orcs by holding opponent units for a round or two dealing with the little buggers.
Yeah, that makes sense. I would probably run them in 20-man blocks anyway unless I was just messing around. But in terms of painting, I personally don't have any issues with colors not matching fully. That being said, I painted most of these in color blocks of 10 with another 10 being the same colors placed in an alternating pattern, so technically the 20-man squads are pretty close in color and in a lot of cases, the freehand on the guns match up. 69 Ork Gretchen... NICE!
Nice, niceee 🗿👍
A pin drill and a small piece of 24 gauge wire will keep the new spikes from snapping off, and it will give you a little armature to sculpt on.
And, with the pin-vice in hand, there would be no excuse not to drill those 69 barrels. 😄👍
That would have helped keep the shape too, the spikes are tiny!
The Gretchens were basically used as cannon fodder but could still cause chaos making the game interesting and fun
