Is Manchester really worth a visit? DW's Hannah Hummel shows you around!

I absolutely love Manchester - its one of my favourite cities on earth. Im from Melbourne in Australia and a lot of the city reminded me of Melbourne - especially the grand Victorian architecture. No city has influenced the world more than Manchester.

Manchester was where the industrial revolution that created the
modern world started. The goods made or manufactured were exported around the globe. London financed it all.

I've spoken to a bunch of people who grew up in London then moved up here and they all say the same. You have everything you need and it's all nice and compact so you don't have to go for miles and miles to get to it like in London. Though I really do want London style transport here and across the region. That would be a major game changer for the economy around here. Imagine a Crossrail of the North from Liverpool to Hull?

Every country it seems has the cities that most people will go to (usually the capital city) or just the ones you hear about most often and the touristy cities. But if you want to actually experience the culture and what that city/ country is about (where the locals live, eat, hang around), then you have to go where the tourists usually don’t. Manchester is another example.

I've observed that following covid and the housing crisis in most European capitals, large regional cities in most countries have seen an influx of young people and money leading to places like Manchester to strive again. Its a very positive development, however, the risk is that these places tend to copy the capitals and end up with the same affordability issues much more quickly as the infrastructure cant keep up with population growth. Enjoy it while you can!

I was born in Ancoats in 1955, and I grew up proud of Manchester, and I loved the place. I can’t abide it now, 90% of the lovely Victorian buildings replaced by red brick and glass. The beautiful sunken gardens in Piccadilly replaced by a concrete monstrosity. New Cross, New Islington, and Ancoats called the Northern Quarter how bloody twee? London Road Station now called Piccadilly and Exchange Station completely gone. The foreigners who now seem to form the majority of the population are welcome to it.

Living practically directly between Manchester and Liverpool my sister and I have had a continuous feud over which city is better. I’m on the side of Manchester cause it really feels like a modern and prosperous metropolitan city whereas, to me, Liverpool seems rather stagnant and declining.
A major case for me is their respective museums. Manchester Museum recently went through a major renovation with new galleries and updates to older ones, and Liverpool Museum seems to be stuck in the 80s with empty aquariums and outdated information.

It’s obviously a matter of opinion and taste. Personally l prefer Liverpool but Manchester is an extremely interesting city. As everyone says it is the world’s first industrial city: it has always been a place for money making. But it is also politically radical and its reinvention is the work of a staunchly socialist council, in alliance with artists, a lot of American corporations and right wing national politicians. It is a place for capitalists, sport, artists and bohemians. The population is young and diverse. To love the city you need a bit of a taste for darkness, grime and rain. It’s not for everyone

Birmingham was the First industrialised city and has a better musical heritage.

Nope. Manchester 1st industrial city, you are wrong. Just Google it and see. As for musical heritage, Halle Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, Hollies, 10cc, Smiths, Oasis, Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, BeeGees, Take That, James, Herman's Hermits, Freddie & The Dreamers, Courteeners, The 1975, Joy Division, New Order, Simply Red Verve, M People... it just keeps going. What do you have in Birmingham other than a few 70's bands like ELO, Slade and Black Sabbath? Not in the same league.

The worst big city is Birmingham. It’s grim. Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, Glasgow and Newcastle are all better. Manchester is in another league.
