Chetham's Library is really worth a visit but you do have to book on to a tour (monday-friday), it isn't open to the public in the same way that John Rylands and other public libraries are, but you will learn a lot about the history of Manchester and Chetham's on the tour.

If you want to understand how Manchester went from not much more than a village to the third largest city in Britain in less than a hundred years, you really need to visit the Museum of Science & Industry, which includes the original 1830 Liverpool & Manchester Railway station (oldest in the world) and the nearby canal basin.

The actual real city of Manchester is behind a few other cities in England by size, it has to use greater Manchester ie Salford, Wigan, Stockport etc to increase its size but in reality they are towns/cities that satellite Manchester and are places in their own right, Manchester United don't even play at home in Manchester

@@jackthelad5366 If it comes to that, Manchester Docks, Manchester Racecourse and Manchester Airport are among scores of "Manchester" places that aren't or weren't really in Manchester. The point remains that Manchester became the focal point for all the cotton towns that encircled the city to create what is now a conurbation with a population bigger than Norway. The City of London is only a mile square, but nobody argues that London isn't a major city.

So glad you liked my hometown! The northern quarter is a must for eating & drinking, Mackie Mayor is just as busy during the daytime. The Town Hall reopens in 2024 I think and that's well worth visiting, another area worth a visit is Spinningfields, just off Deansgate for eats etc. And close by is the John Rylands library, a truly beautiful building. Also the Peoples history museum, Manchester Museum, Museum of science & industry and the remains of the Roman fort - so much to do and see - Cheers!

Loving how you guys are US. visitors who have ventured to the north of England which I think most Americans go to London and maybe Scotland but totally bypass the North .
I was born in the northeast but now live on the south coast.
The North east is by far the best part of England and in my view the people there are the friendliest and most down to earth in England .
Well done for going out of your default and taking the train .

I was born in Manchester and I'm old enough to have gone to Afflecks when it first opened in the 1980s; it was a very different place then. Great to see you experience places that are so familiar to me. It's a real shame you didn't get to see Cheethams or John Rylands. Same with the Town Hal; an incredible building. Manchester has a lot to offer but it's not very good at presenting itself well to tourists. Nice you got to experience typical Manchester weather, too.

The gay village (Canal Street) is worth visiting next time as it’s very well known and long-established. The statue of Alan Turing is there too (worth researching his story if you don’t already know it). Also an interesting bar is NQ64 in the Northern Quarter. It’s underground, with walls covered in bright neon graffiti and full of old arcades and classic games consoles to play while you drink cocktails or craft beer.

Not many tourists manage to find it or experience it fully as you two did. Ps, welcome to UK, and the worl of cancelled trains. Our train companies have no idea the situations they put people in. Today, I was notified by TH-cam that you'd put a film together about Manchester. I tuned in immediately, its been my hometown all my life (I'm 64). Your journey covered a few places I'd never heard of... definately informative... and will visit one day. Affleck and Brown's... I remember it well. It was a rather up market department store... as a little lad I was enthralled by it. My favourite part was the Toy Department. Manchester and its surrounding areas has lots of interesting places and history, so it will be worth an extended stay. I'm looking forward to watching your next video. I guess it might be Chester. 12 out of 10 to both of you. Best wishes, Andrew

Magic Geekdom if you like Cathedrals check out Ely Cathedral in Ely Cambridgeshire it's also known as the "Ship of the Fens" it's a magnificent building that was started in 1083 and finished in the 1300s Ely itself was named after the eels that come to the UK from the Sargasso sea some 3000 miles away. They migrate across the Atlantic after they are born to mature in the Fens. They arrive in the UK as Elvers or babies then can spend upto 30 yrs in the fenland waterways of East Anglia England but they were also a local delicacy that was exported and eaten all over England in the form of Jellied Eels which brought a lot of wealth to the area this the city of Ely was built due to these little Elvers which brought massive wealth to the area
U B 40 was a Reggae Band in the 1980s it got the name from the Unemployment Benefit form number 40 used in the UK for people to sign on to the benefits system while they were between jobs

    Hi guys
Just found you and subbed. You both visited more places in a few hours than I have in ages, and I was born and live in Manchester. We tend to go around Deansgate and Spinningfields, lots of nice restaurants and bars. If you come back again, take a trip around Castlefield, where you will find lots of history surrounding railways. There is a Viaduct that carried the world first trains from Manchester to Liverpool, this is now been turned into a garden in the sky. Also, you will find the remains of an old Roman Fort and the science and history museum. And not forgetting the lovely Bridgewater canal with its narrowboats and Barges. This area is well worth a visit if you like history. Hope you enjoy Chester the trains are a bit unreliable at the minute due to pay disputes but as an alternative in future you can get coaches called National Express from Chorlton St close to the gay village in the city centre to pretty much anywhere in mainland UK. I think to Chester, it would be around £10 each. Anyway, have a lovely trip, and I assume being American, York will be on your agenda. Take care.

Hi!👋 I’ve been watching (& thoroughly enjoying) your travel vlogs for a while, but have never commented till now. When I saw the title of this (Manchester) I thought to myself, “I wish I’d known you were visiting Mcr” because I’d have told you that if there’s only time to see/ do/ experience ONE thing, you absolutely HAVE to head to Afflecks Palace! I didn’t imagine you’d know about it or accidentally walk by & stumble across it - so I was both relieved & overjoyed to see you discover this magical gem👍
I’ve lived all over the UK (& other countries) - as far north as the Scottish highlands right down to Brighton on the south coast of England & as far west as Cornwall in the south-west tip of England & also north-west Wales near Snowdonia & right across to the east cost including Lincolnshire, the south-east (Kent, Sussex etc) plus 9 places (towns, cities & villages) in north-east England (where I currently live) & a random bunch of other cities & towns, like Nottingham, in “The Midlands” too.
I have to admit, Manchester is my favourite city in England & I love it with a passion! I’m proud to feel Mancunian after living there for many years & going through so many experiences (I was in my early 20s & I’m now middle-aged😬😂) Whenever I go back there to see friends or go to a gig or something, I instantly feel like I’m home. You could spend an entire week in Mcr & fill every single day with so many amazing experiences & places to visit!
I also saw recently that you visited my current home town - I would’ve loved to have shown you round, or at least suggested a list of things to do & see, especially things your average tourist wouldn’t be aware of, or stumble across!
I’m so glad you’re having such a great time here 😀 I’m so familiar with almost every place you’ve visited in the UK so far & it’s wonderful to see you experience it for the first time. Seeing your happiness & genuine fascination with everything, really brightens my day🫶 Things that I take for granted, or even consider mundane or boring, are suddenly being given a new lease of life, seeing it through the eyes of a tourist. Enjoy the rest of your travels!

I agree, impossible to pick a favourite Cathedral, they are all beautiful, although Lincoln has a special place in my heart as I live nearby.

Good vid, you two. You've only scratched the surface. I've taken my Aussie family around Manchester city centre and I was surprised that even with the benefit of my local knowledge it can't be done in a day. If you come back this way, the next round is on me!

You only just scratched the surface of this wonderful city. Museum of Science and Industry is a must, John Rylands Library, Society for street food and beer, Manchester Museum, Manchester Art Gallery. Catch the tram out to Salford Quays. Can take a boat around the quays. The Lowry gallery is there. L.S Lowry is a local artist who painted every day scenes like people leaving the factory, heading to the football. Hopefully you do get a chance to come back to Manchester.

If you ever find yourself in Manchester again, you should visit John Ryland's Library (look it up, it's beautiful and has some great exhibits) and close to that is the museum of Science & Industry which is on the site of the world's first passenger railway station, and right outside of that is the recreated Roman ruins... all near to Beetham Tower (there's a bar up there called Cloud 23... it's a very tall building) and perhaps my old workplace Manchester Town Hall if you get a chance (but not on a Sunday!)
Glad you enjoyed my home city!

Great to see you in my neighbourhood. If you are going to Chester I can heartily recommend the Merseyrail Saveaway ticket. Just over £5 will get you unlimited train, bus and Mersey ferry use for the day: Liverpool, Chester, New Brighton, West Kirby, Hoylake, Birkenhead, Southport etc. 👍

Frank Sidebottom was the creation of Chris Sievey. Before he made a name as Frank Sidebottom, Chris was the lead vocalist in a punk band called 'The Freshies.' One of the songs they released in 1980 was 'I'm In Love With The Girl On The Manchester Virgin Megastore Check-out Desk.' He sadly passed away in 2010.

You'll need two weeks for Manchester when you come back, not just to see everything in Manchester: Castlefield and the Roman fort and museums there, Deansgate, the museum at the university, the city art and Whitworth galleries, the shopping areas, Old Trafford for a United game and the Museum (you'll have to book a ticket well in advance for a match), a cricket match, the transport museum, but there's also the places to visit that you'll use Manchester as a base for, Alderley Edge (get a train there but Read Alan Garners Weirdstone of Brisingamen and Moon of Gomrath first and get steak pies from Wienholts - only open 3 days a week). There's the Peak District, the countryside around Macclesfield, Buxton, canal walks around Marple, there's Castleton and it's show caves, soo much do see and do in and around Manchester
