I was born in Manchester and I'm old enough to have gone to Afflecks when it first opened in the 1980s; it was a very different place then. Great to see you experience places that are so familiar to me. It's a real shame you didn't get to see Cheethams or John Rylands. Same with the Town Hal; an incredible building. Manchester has a lot to offer but it's not very good at presenting itself well to tourists. Nice you got to experience typical Manchester weather, too.

See Manchester when living near is completely different than seeing it as someone who comes once I need to go back to afflecks again me and my friends used to go every time we would go out for the day ❤️ glad you enjoyed it
Manchester is my home City! It looked like you got to see a lot but definitely John Rylands Library is a must. NQ and Ancoates is great for little quirky finds. Glad you had a great time ❤️
Glad you enjoyed "Mad-chester" - Great to see "This & that" use to go there on a Friday lunch-time every week many years ago when I worked in a building just around the corner followed by a swift pint at the Hare & Hounds on Shudehill. One of my colleagues was convinced they laced the curry with Cocaine as he couldn't get enough of it! 😄
When I lived in Manchester, I shopped in Afflecks Palace ALL the time. I got some of my hair extensions there, clothes, presents, fancy dress costumes. It’s the best! You can just get mesmerised in there can’t you. Love it
For a lot of UK travellers they overlook manchester and its such a shame, we are such a condensed eclectic city with so much to offer from history and museums, art food and theatre to music and modern culture so as a manc native i really appreciae the shout out and would firmly reccomend coming back for a few solid days of exploration.
I spent a lot of time in Afflecks Palace when i lived there. Got a few piercings there too. The kink shops upstairs were hilarious. Never once actually went into Cathedral in the years i lived there though!
Glad you liked my hometown. Cheethams Library is astounding, put that on your next-time list! To Chester next, brilliant. Where my Dad and all his family came from. Beautiful city, you’ll love it. Largely ignored by USA visitors but you chaps will be able to appreciate it well. Looking forward to seeing your next post.
Manchester was, at one time the richest city in the UK. It was famous for cotton production, and as a result you will notice the cottonflower depicted in many government and industrial buildings. The average life expectancy in Manchester at the peak of the cotton industry was only 26 years. The american civil war caused the "cotton famine" in the north of england, due to the shortage of cotton imports.
Manchester is great! Chester is my home, make sure you take a walk around the walls, go down by the river Dee and look at all the Roman stuff. It's a lot like York maybe smaller.
This and that is my favourite curry house in Manchester. Looks like you guys have visited a lot of the places tourists don't but should. Good research.
I love aflex I was taken there by my mum in the 90s and I've now taken my daughter in the last few years and it's amazing. Love the art and culture of Manchester
Glad you enjoyed Manchester, I was born there and lived there up until the age 16. Not been there for years, looks like it has changed a bit but made me smile to see it is still raining :)
I’m born and raised in Manchester and seeing how excited you were reminded me when I’d go into the centre age 12 and go to aflex and the corn exchange and it was all exciting and new every time I went. then you just take it for granted so it was nice to see you in them shops. But iv always maintained on a nice summers day Manchester is one of the best cities in the world Shame there few and far between
You only just scratched the surface of this wonderful city. Museum of Science and Industry is a must, John Rylands Library, Society for street food and beer, Manchester Museum, Manchester Art Gallery. Catch the tram out to Salford Quays. Can take a boat around the quays. The Lowry gallery is there. L.S Lowry is a local artist who painted every day scenes like people leaving the factory, heading to the football. Hopefully you do get a chance to come back to Manchester.
MCR would be My Chemical Romance to me too unless I saw a bee logo! Afflecks was always a cool place to hangout in the 90s - you could get all the weird and wonderful gear there. Manchester is a great city. You'll love Chester when you get there - loads of history and a little more refined due to the wealth of the average resident!
The gay village (Canal Street) is worth visiting next time as it’s very well known and long-established. The statue of Alan Turing is there too (worth researching his story if you don’t already know it). Also an interesting bar is NQ64 in the Northern Quarter. It’s underground, with walls covered in bright neon graffiti and full of old arcades and classic games consoles to play while you drink cocktails or craft beer.
I've been watching your TH-cam videos for a few months now. They are really well put together, lots of humour and information... brilliant, well done to both of you. Today, I was notified by TH-cam that you'd put a film together about Manchester. I tuned in immediately, its been my hometown all my life (I'm 64). Your journey covered a few places I'd never heard of... definately informative... and will visit one day. Affleck and Brown's... I remember it well. It was a rather up market department store... as a little lad I was enthralled by it. My favourite part was the Toy Department. Manchester and its surrounding areas has lots of interesting places and history, so it will be worth an extended stay. I'm looking forward to watching your next video. I guess it might be Chester. 12 out of 10 to both of you. Best wishes, Andrew
Thank you for exploring my city! Always fun to see a different perspective and get excited again about things I've gotten so used to. Next time I'd definitely recommend that you go see The University of Manchester for its beautiful buildings and the Manchester Museum and Whitwroth art galleries are part of the campus. Castlefield is also a lovely spot to visit especially when the sun is out!
Hi guys Just found you and subbed. You both visited more places in a few hours than I have in ages, and I was born and live in Manchester. We tend to go around Deansgate and Spinningfields, lots of nice restaurants and bars. If you come back again, take a trip around Castlefield, where you will find lots of history surrounding railways. There is a Viaduct that carried the world first trains from Manchester to Liverpool, this is now been turned into a garden in the sky. Also, you will find the remains of an old Roman Fort and the science and history museum. And not forgetting the lovely Bridgewater canal with its narrowboats and Barges. This area is well worth a visit if you like history. Hope you enjoy Chester the trains are a bit unreliable at the minute due to pay disputes but as an alternative in future you can get coaches called National Express from Chorlton St close to the gay village in the city centre to pretty much anywhere in mainland UK. I think to Chester, it would be around £10 each. Anyway, have a lovely trip, and I assume being American, York will be on your agenda. Take care.
If you ever find yourself in Manchester again, you should visit John Ryland's Library (look it up, it's beautiful and has some great exhibits) and close to that is the museum of Science & Industry which is on the site of the world's first passenger railway station, and right outside of that is the recreated Roman ruins... all near to Beetham Tower (there's a bar up there called Cloud 23... it's a very tall building) and perhaps my old workplace Manchester Town Hall if you get a chance (but not on a Sunday!) Glad you enjoyed my home city!
Yesterday in city we drop our receipt leaving store, the enforcement take our identification and both fiance and me issued the fine £150 as litter offence. This is correct process?
Ah I’m so loving you discovered Afflecks Palace - it’s always been a mecca of mine since the 80s to find incredible things. Manchester is my favourite city and love going out there.
Hi guy’s,I’m so happy you visited my home town Manchester, before I moved to Australia my siblings still live there ,I love Manchester & the people are very friendly! Even though it’s known to rain a lot ! There’s been a lot of famous bands ,come out of Manchester ! 👌
Affleck's,, or Affleck's Palace as it was known in my day, was my favorite place to find gifts when I had absolutely no idea what to get someone. The Corn Exchange used to have a similar feel, but it has long been gentrified.
Magic Geekdom if you like Cathedrals check out Ely Cathedral in Ely Cambridgeshire it's also known as the "Ship of the Fens" it's a magnificent building that was started in 1083 and finished in the 1300s Ely itself was named after the eels that come to the UK from the Sargasso sea some 3000 miles away. They migrate across the Atlantic after they are born to mature in the Fens. They arrive in the UK as Elvers or babies then can spend upto 30 yrs in the fenland waterways of East Anglia England but they were also a local delicacy that was exported and eaten all over England in the form of Jellied Eels which brought a lot of wealth to the area this the city of Ely was built due to these little Elvers which brought massive wealth to the area U B 40 was a Reggae Band in the 1980s it got the name from the Unemployment Benefit form number 40 used in the UK for people to sign on to the benefits system while they were between jobs
It rains a fair bit in Manchester. I live just on the outskirts so it is fun to see your perspective on the area. For food I could r3commend curry mile on Wilmslow road. Its a relatively short bus journey from the town centre and has about 70 eateries and restaurants based mostly on the middle east and a few other parts of the world. Loads of choice.
Frank Sidebottom - now you’re talking! Will you be taking the Timperley Tour? 🤪🤘 Great to see you in my neighbourhood. If you are going to Chester I can heartily recommend the Merseyrail Saveaway ticket. Just over £5 will get you unlimited train, bus and Mersey ferry use for the day: Liverpool, Chester, New Brighton, West Kirby, Hoylake, Birkenhead, Southport etc. 👍
Aw, loved this, thank you! I’m a proud Mancunian, but haven’t lived there for years…but whenever I go ‘home’ i obviously don’t have to spend much money as we have family there, but I DO have to remember to take loads of money to spend in Afflecks - my fave shop in the whole wide world!!
John Rylands library is good to see, down the road from the Cathedral on Deansgate near Spinningfields. Also you can get on the Free Bus 1 & 2 they both stop outside 😀
The magicGeekdom, thanks for sharing this wonderful video. Manchester is cool and will be a good surprise to any visitor. I also enjoy making videos about this city too. I love the special touch you uave given this video. Congratulations
I'm so glad you liked my city and our "girthy" cathedral. It's very dear to me. I recently finally moved into the centre. Doesnt leave me with much leftover but I love it. My flat's near the wash house it's a very buzzy area. Where abouts did you stay? We have some great hotels and our food scene and bar scene is great too. So cool that you went to this n that, it's an absolute gem. The pub on the corner next to it is trof and they do an incredible sunday roast
I lived close to where you filmed for about 10yrs and you found some of the great places in Manchester, particularly the trendy/quirky NQ area. I wish that all shops were like those, maybe then the high streets of the UK wouldn’t be struggling so much. As others have said, MOSI is a great stop while you’re in Manchester. Also the Art Gallery is brilliant and worth a visit.
My home city, next time your in the UK visit Lincoln, kendal, Chester, also travel on buses and see the suburbs, look at the houses, get a feel of what it would be like to live here
My home town. If you want to try the zenith of kebabs, get to Rusholme Chippy on the curry mile. People come from all over the country because they went there when they went to University in Manchester. Midweek can be cool in Manny as well. Lots of bars have bands on, to bring in customers, in usually quieter nights. You could look up Blues Kitchen, and see if that takes your fancy, for food, drink and music. You'll always be welcome here.
Cheethams library is an absolute must to see! Manchester shops are the best. Heaton Park is the largest park in the uk and a beautiful well kept place to visit. Don’t get me started on the choice of live music. Manchester is bloody amazing!!!!
Sutton Park in Birmingham is the largest urban park in the UK (at 2400 acres is 4 times larger than Heaton Park at 600 acres), not counting London's Lee Valley Park. Richmond Park, London covers 2360 acres.
We visited Japan in January, the weather was stunning except Osaka, which is known as the Machester of the Orient and it rained the only time on our holiday. Reminded me of my home city.
My great grandmother used to own two pubs in Manchester in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. One was still open in the 1980’s and called The Cross Keys Inn, it was on Minchall (sp?) Street.
Let's not forget Oasis, Manchester City, the other team just outside Manchester (utd💩) born and bred Mancunian hope you enjoyed your stay welcome to Manchester 💙🏴🇺🇲
Glad you enjoyed it. On your 'theme' of old toilets, 'The Temple' in Manchester on Oxford road ( formerly the temple of convenience) was one of my fave bars for many years, with a jukebox to almost rival corbieres, also worth a visit. You also have the peveril of the peak and Britons protection close by. The old hacienda is not far from there ( at the back of the hacienda building on the canal, there's a timeline of the hacienda who played there etc, and a wee Tony Wilson mural) short walk, and also the boardwalk club and recording studio. There's also Castlefield, behind Liverpool Street ( museum of science and industry), where theres the remains of an old fort or folly, can't recall which. Castlefield is a nice part of town ( you can catch a boat taxi from there to Salford quays) Then a wee ride out west takes you to the real coronation street and Salford lads club. Come back via Salford and visit the King's head pub ( John cooper Clarke's favourite pub) and I do believe it was once owned by paul Heaton though I'll have to check, they have a quirky little theatre upstairs too, often have shows on. Did you spot Manchester's space invaders in and around the NQ? Enjoy the rest of your trip.
wow you guys looked like your really enjoyed that and so did i...never been to manchester but definately would head to the northern quarter...thank you for this
Guys if you're back in Manchester you should check out NQ64, fab Café, forbidden planet as I think you'd like them. Also a visit to John Rylands is a must, matt and phreds or blues kitchen for some music too. Enjoy your travels 😊 so good to see you visiting where I am!
Hey, glad you enjoyed my home City. That cocktail place you went to kooks amazing, but I don't drink anymore, otherwise I'd have plenty sups. I never tire of living here there's just so much to do, so much culture to soak up.
John Rylands Library - a Gothic masterpiece with an amazing collection of artefacts. When I was at university, access was limited and as an undergraduate, I used to while away many days in their often being one of only a handful of people in there.
I recently subscribed to your channel and really enjoy your videos, particularly of your time in England. I lived in England for two years and still visit whenever I get a chance. I'll be in Manchester and Leeds in March and can't wait. Great video. You guys stay safe. Cheers.
Glad you enjoyed Manchester. Only been once but we loved it. I agree, impossible to pick a favourite Cathedral, they are all beautiful, although Lincoln has a special place in my heart as I live nearby.
How do you guys always find such cool places to visit? I've been to these cities many times throughout my life but never knew about so many quirky places.
Have worked in Manchester before, there was a lot of development going on back then.Went back several years later for a break,it was really enjoyable...
I'm so happy you made it to my hometown. Wash-house is a hidden gem bit pricey but worth a one off visit. Manchester is better in summer where you get see people outside drinking in the sunshine such a cool vibe 😎🌞
Really enjoying your videos guys. Bias for this one as it’s my home city :) there are cool little bars in places you just wouldn’t think to look. The northern quarter was my go to
Manchestah innit fam! I think the best thing about Manchester is the fact that there's so much variety. If you want to enjoy the busy night life then you can. But if you enjoy walks through green parks, then there's plenty aswell. If you guys ever visit again then definitely visit Chorlton water and Fletcher moss Park. It's also an incrediblely diverse city with some of the best public transport in a city in the UK! Great video guys 😃
Hi!👋 I’ve been watching (& thoroughly enjoying) your travel vlogs for a while, but have never commented till now. When I saw the title of this (Manchester) I thought to myself, “I wish I’d known you were visiting Mcr” because I’d have told you that if there’s only time to see/ do/ experience ONE thing, you absolutely HAVE to head to Afflecks Palace! I didn’t imagine you’d know about it or accidentally walk by & stumble across it - so I was both relieved & overjoyed to see you discover this magical gem👍 I’ve lived all over the UK (& other countries) - as far north as the Scottish highlands right down to Brighton on the south coast of England & as far west as Cornwall in the south-west tip of England & also north-west Wales near Snowdonia & right across to the east cost including Lincolnshire, the south-east (Kent, Sussex etc) plus 9 places (towns, cities & villages) in north-east England (where I currently live) & a random bunch of other cities & towns, like Nottingham, in “The Midlands” too. I have to admit, Manchester is my favourite city in England & I love it with a passion! I’m proud to feel Mancunian after living there for many years & going through so many experiences (I was in my early 20s & I’m now middle-aged😬😂) Whenever I go back there to see friends or go to a gig or something, I instantly feel like I’m home. You could spend an entire week in Mcr & fill every single day with so many amazing experiences & places to visit! I also saw recently that you visited my current home town - I would’ve loved to have shown you round, or at least suggested a list of things to do & see, especially things your average tourist wouldn’t be aware of, or stumble across! I’m so glad you’re having such a great time here 😀 I’m so familiar with almost every place you’ve visited in the UK so far & it’s wonderful to see you experience it for the first time. Seeing your happiness & genuine fascination with everything, really brightens my day🫶 Things that I take for granted, or even consider mundane or boring, are suddenly being given a new lease of life, seeing it through the eyes of a tourist. Enjoy the rest of your travels!
Would suggest for the other side of town checking out Castlefield for a walk on the wharf, also nice bars. You can stay on a narrowboat with floating home stays. Manchester Science and Industry Museum nearby, which is free and has a great textiles hall with Manchester’s cotton industry. Nice places to eat in Spinningfields, and John Rylands Library on Deansgate, not forgetting neighbouring Salford Quays including Imperial War Museum, also free.
Hi, great to see you in Manchester! If you visit again must see places are John Rylands Library, Chethams School. For food, drink & much more go to Escape to Freight Island. Also just up the road from Mackie Mayor is Cutting Square, nice bars & restaurants
you guys picked some great spots! For the Rice n three, I never even realised that place existed, I've always gone to Kabana round the corner. Its also cool to walk down Oxford road, its changed a lot, but the museum is great, then theres Whitworth park further down.
My home city! I love how you found a place I’ve never been too, considering I’ve lived there 27 years you did a great job. You avoided the tourist stuff and got to the heart of the city.

Love it
So glad you chose This and That over one of the trendier choices.
Glad you liked Manchester. There's always a vibrant atmosphere even when it's "tipping down" with rain. Lots to see & do.
Manchester is the best city of UK so far!Amazing city!!
I thought Manchester and the whole of uk was depressing
@@munterboy1744your thought was totally wrong!!you are the only one depressed loser man!!
I spent a lot of time in Afflecks Palace when i lived there. Got a few piercings there too. The kink shops upstairs were hilarious.
Never once actually went into Cathedral in the years i lived there though!
Afflecks is a lot of fun!
didn't realize it was still there
Glad you liked my hometown.
It was wonderful.
Frank Sidebottom the Legend 🤣🤣 he was around the Manchester Music scene when I was growing up
Afflecks was my old haunt in the 90s as a teenager
They had so many fun things!
Kinda wild seeing someone experience a city you’ve grown so used to for the first time. Makes me appreciate this lovely city more
Your research is just amazing! I worked in Manchester for years. This and That! Epic! 😁
Manchester is great! Chester is my home, make sure you take a walk around the walls, go down by the river Dee and look at all the Roman stuff. It's a lot like York maybe smaller.
Great video guys! Must visit Trafford centre and theatre of dreams 😎
Cheshire - towards south of Manchester has some lovely places to visit too. 😉
There is soon much more
“I think you are wrong, those are rubbish bins” Awsome😂😂 I love your exploration of the UK. I’m in Nottinghamshire, Manchester is a great place ❤️🇬🇧👍
I'm moving to Manchester soon (from near London) and I didn't know about the Washouse... I'll defintely be visiting, Manchester is so amazing!😁
Love the energy you both have! Discovered some places I didn’t even know about thanks to your vlog!
Hi guys
Just found you and subbed. Take care.
Glad you loved my home city Manchester ❤️.. Afflecks palace is brilliant
If you ever find yourself in Manchester again, you should visit John Ryland's Library (look it up, it's beautiful and has some great exhibits) and close to that is the museum of Science & Industry which is on the site of the world's first passenger railway station, and right outside of that is the recreated Roman ruins... all near to Beetham Tower (there's a bar up there called Cloud 23... it's a very tall building) and perhaps my old workplace Manchester Town Hall if you get a chance (but not on a Sunday!)
Glad you enjoyed my home city!
It's a wonderful place!
Glad you came to visit our hometown! :) come back again - theres lots more to see!!!!
So glad you enjoyed visiting my hometown. Plus, it wouldn't be Manchester in winter if the weather wasn't horrendous :)
Hi guy’s,I’m so happy you visited my home town Manchester, before I moved to Australia
my siblings still live there ,I love Manchester & the people are very friendly! Even though it’s known to rain a lot !
There’s been a lot of famous bands ,come out of Manchester !
👌
I live in London, I have not been to Manchester for quite a few years now. Having seen this, I feel I should make trip!
They arrive in the UK as Elvers or babies then can spend upto 30 yrs in the fenland waterways of East Anglia England but they were also a local delicacy that was exported and eaten all over England in the form of Jellied Eels which brought a lot of wealth to the area this the city of Ely was built due to these little Elvers which brought massive wealth to the area
U B 40 was a Reggae Band in the 1980s it got the name from the Unemployment Benefit form number 40 used in the UK for people to sign on to the benefits system while they were between jobs
I love Manchester.
looks like Your having a great time. I wanna go to that Pixel bar. That looks like so much fun
It was!
Afflecks Palace is one of my favourite places ever to shop! Even if I don't buy anything, I like the exploration factor of it.
We love curry mile + there is a great Greek restaurant down at the end near The Toast Rack
Frank Sidebottom - now you’re talking! Will you be taking the Timperley Tour? 🤪🤘
Great to see you in my neighbourhood. 👍
Only just stumbled on your channel. Lovely stuff. Glad you're enjoying your travels here! Subbed for the rest of the journey
Awesome, thank you!
Welcome to Manchester love these vlogs,
😊
Oh Manchester.. so much too answer fore. Finally you made it there again. . 👍
Love your reviews! So much enthusiasm and great info!
As someone born/bred in MCR, I`m really chuffed you went to the Northern Quarter - by far the best place to visit ! - Loved the video cheers x
Canal St is great! Lots of bars, music, drag and comedy shows, lgbt area, Alan Turing memorial who cracked the enigma code during WW2.
When I was on vacation in the UK in 2018 I did London Oxford Liverpool and Edinburgh. ..Manchester looks pretty cool .
Ultimate cool city
I lived close to where you filmed for about 10yrs and you found some of the great places in Manchester, particularly the trendy/quirky NQ area. I wish that all shops were like those, maybe then the high streets of the UK wouldn’t be struggling so much.
As others have said, MOSI is a great stop while you’re in Manchester. Also the Art Gallery is brilliant and worth a visit.
My home city, next time your in the UK visit Lincoln, kendal, Chester, also travel on buses and see the suburbs, look at the houses, get a feel of what it would be like to live here
Not sure you saw all the best bits of Manchester, but I’m delighted you made the effort! Hope you have enjoyed your visit to the U.K.
It’s Minshull St
I'm a Brit and Manchester is the only major city in the UK I haven't visited - it's definitely going to go on my 'must visit list'.
You have to. It's a great place!
Ah, you should visit! It's a lovely friendly city 😊
It has an excellent music scene and is extremely vibrant. I love Manchester.
Cheers.
Thank you for subscribing and for the kind words. We've loved our time and are looking forward to our next trip too!
Glad you enjoyed Manchester. Only been once but we loved it.
I agree, impossible to pick a favourite Cathedral, they are all beautiful, although Lincoln has a special place in my heart as I live nearby.
leaving for Manchester in 3 days and just booked the Wash house. Thank you SO much, it looks like a blast!
How do you guys always find such cool places to visit? I've been to these cities many times throughout my life but never knew about so many quirky places.
So glad you visited This And That been eating there since 1992
Have worked in Manchester before, there was a lot of development going on back then.Went back several years later for a break,it was really enjoyable...
Come back next year when the town hall is finished, it looks spectacular. Also the music scene whixh Manchester is famous for.
I'm so happy you made it to my hometown. Wash-house is a hidden gem bit pricey but worth a one off visit. Manchester is better in summer where you get see people outside drinking in the sunshine such a cool vibe 😎🌞
Awesome vid, you guys were literally 10secs from our place.. Manchester is an awesome city!!
Glad you liked my city! I would recommend going to Bath too. And Edinburgh. Both historical cities with lots of old buildings, and scenes to see!
I didn’t imagine you’d know about it or accidentally walk by & stumble across it - so I was both relieved & overjoyed to see you discover this magical gem👍
I’ve lived all over the UK (& other countries) - as far north as the Scottish highlands right down to Brighton on the south coast of England & as far west as Cornwall in the south-west tip of England & also north-west Wales near Snowdonia & right across to the east cost including Lincolnshire, the south-east (Kent, Sussex etc) plus 9 places (towns, cities & villages) in north-east England (where I currently live) & a random bunch of other cities & towns, like Nottingham, in “The Midlands” too.
Trains cancelled. That's just the way we roll here 🤣 great video. That pixel bar looks fun, it's now on my summer to do list 👍👋
Next time you visit check out Freight Island at Mayfield - just behind Piccadilly station. Huge and very cool!
Thanks for the tip!
Just on my way in to work in Manchester and found this 😅 gonna watch all your vids, you 2 are great 👍
