  • Here is a 1978 Bucyrus Erie 88B dragline that was rebuilt and put in service in Rieth-Riley Construction's South Bend Indiana pit. The machine has a KT1150 Cummins in it with a 5 yard Hendrix bucket on it.

Great video. I used to move 4600 and 2400 back in the late 70s. Brings back a lot of memories for me. I ran a TM650 Lima. Later I ran a 30B dragline, also used clam bucket on a barge bulding docks and seawalls. Great music choice. Floyd fan for life.

Draglines, cranes, and most heavy equipment along those lines, have been highly fascinating to me since I was a toddler. Something about a dragline, large or small is most impressive, with the power and the work they can do. There is a video, on here, with several still pictures of a large, maybe 100 yard, or larger dragline, lifting a large dozer, I think larger than a D9 Cat, out of a mining pit. It had it caved into it. The dragline picked it up, suspended from its bucket, like I would pick up a child's small toy, like it was nothing, and set it out of the pit. I would liked to have watched that, real life, in person.

Awesome machine, Love seeing old iron being saved, restored and still making money for their owners. New machines may have all the latest comforts but they dont hold a candle to the amount of power and productivity these machines put out.

+UnitCrane514 I started my crane career in 1950's Manitowoc's and 1960's Americans, I love the old stuff but it's been replaced except in specialized applications by massive hydraulic excavators and front shovels.

My Very first rock pit job out of the Navy was oiling on the Old style 88B ( no inclosed cab ) at Miami Crushed Rock in Sweetwater off Tamimi trail, I later ran it and Way later in 75/76 ish I ran a new 88B just like this one in Montgomery Indiana at a Coal strip mine... Great machine they are... 👷‍♂️👍😎

You must know Jimmy C. From Linder @ Mia. He was my mentor and this 88b is one of my rebuilds, it came to them via FL. After a total rebuild.

The drag cable on an 88B is usually spooled by the smaller diameter right drum and the hoist cable is usually spooled by the larger diameter left drum. This machine is rigged just the opposite. Also the cable grooves in the lagging are usually larger in the right drum for 1.5" drag cable while the cable grooves in the left drum are usually smaller for 1.25" hoist cable. One can see that the cable on the left drum has no space between the wraps and is likely chafing on itself. I wonder how long the cable lasted with this configuration. See the drums at 3:23.

Paul Jucknath That one had me puzzled also until I realized that somehow the picture was reversed. Freeze the frame then look at it thru a mirror.

I believe those are standard crane lagging halves and they simply put a dragline on the machine without changing them. The cables are probably reversed due to the operators preference on which level controls to drag and hoist

    • @david427steel

Probably explains why the are running it with no wraps on the drum. ;)

The laggings are correct for 88B dragline, the film is in mirror mode that's why it looks like they are on wrong side. If you know about draglines then you would understand a few things, one the cable is always 2 to 4 wraps till end when digging starts due to line pull cable can not lap without flattening therefore when hoist is all the way at tip cable is on last single groove on lagging, same as when crowsfoot is at fairlead drag cable is on last grooved lagging. They must never over lap. Cables that over lap use smooth laggings and not grooved. Two is if operator likes petals and controls on other hands and feet than normal it sure is much easier to just swap air lines on controls than to dismantle the entire rotating deck!! Lol
Just stating some of the facts for people with questions. I dissasemeled this B.E.88B in FL. And did a total rebuild, bushings, bearings, gears, clutches, all air cylinders, new linings, new cab w/air & heat, and did a almost total rebuild of boom w/new tip, all new carbody propel gears, etc. (Total rebuild) then shipped from FL. To South Bend R.R. and I went with dragline and erected it and put it to work for R.R. if anyone has any questions or would be interested in a dragline, clamshell, friction lifting crane, or parts for B.E. 30b, 38b, 61b& 61 super, 71b, 88b ,380w / Lima 2400A & 2400B, 1850, 1250 /American 400, 500, 700, 900 series /Mantiwac 4500, 4600, and 4100 boom.

@@dankramer3439 I am considering buying a 38B here in Australia and am very interested in finding out what is involved in the costs of a rebuild and maintenance or owning and operating this type of machine. Cheers Adrian. Ps Can I use the contact info you supplied to best get in touch with yourself?

The operator needs to learn how to cast the bucket with the swing instead of sucking it in .
