Moving Dirt With 1940s Cable Operated Bucyrus-Erie 15-B Crane - Classic Construction At Work!

This is a circa 1940s Bucyrus-Erie 15-B cable operated crane with a 15 feet, 6 inch boom and a 12 feet, 6 inch handle. It weighs in at about 26,000 pounds and capable of moving a half a yard of pay dirt per pass. The 15-B is powered by a Caterpillar D315 rated at 54 horsepower running at 1325 RPM.
This crane was demonstrated at the100 Years Of Progress at the Edverville Show in Carthage, North Carolina. The surrounding grounds is sandy soil making it a perfect location for construction demonstrations.

This guy has apparently done this before. It's a pleasure to watch a skilled, smooth operator.
These machines made a lot of money for a lot of contractors back in the day digging things like basements and utility pipelines.

B Laquisha I’m reminded of the old saying ‘more haste, less speed’. Nice smooth and efficient movement in comparison with modern hydraulics. Those Bucyrus machines used to be made under license by the old Ruston-Hornsby company in the UK and sold as Ruston-Bucyrus. Dinky Toys used to make a nice die-cast model of various Ruston-Bucyrus machines.

@@douro20 yup, I even searched for a few videos of these to ensure they were diesel. I figured they were since they didn't bog down and stall every time it moved like an asthmatic old fuel-guzzling gasser would. 😂

These were commonly used for basement and trench work back in the day. BTW: this machine is referred to as a cable backhoe, pull shovel, drag shovel but it certainly is not a "crane" as listed in the description. The biggest operating cable backhoe that I'd ever seen was the NW 80-D with a 2.5-yd bucket, located at the Nat'l Pike steam show.
