    In that situation you need to turn the heater on full blast, should get the temp down a bit until you can find somewhere safe to stop. I had a Citroen bx, that would overheat, turning the heater on full blast did the trick, only a short term fix but can get you home.

    It's very likely that 2 things are happening w/ Daisy. 1) The head gasket is blown between #2 and #3 cylinder (very common in an A-series engine) 2) That large diameter water pump pulley is causing the water pump to spin too slowly, and the radiator fan to also spin too slowly. The engine coolant thermostat will now be ruined from being run so hot, and should be replaced. I own an Austin America (what you call a BMC1100/1300) and have a website at www.austinamericausa.com if Robbie would like to visit the Tech Advice pages, there is a section dedicated to setting up the cooling system properly. My car uses the same engine, sitting the same way, and with stock radiator and no electric fan, it will run 70-75mph all day long on the freeway in summertime (hot) temperatures. And he should put the snorkle back on that air filter housing so that the carburetor is not sucking hot air off the exhaust manifold located just below that opening. Again, there's a section about this on my website, including how to make a larger diameter snorkle. Cheers!

    I am super leery about overheating any engine and continuing to drive, as it is the fastest and guaranteed way to destroy any engine! I understand this is a borrowed car that you are not personally familiar with but as soon as I see the gauge even approaching the half-way mark I start taking notice!
    Had many, many Minis and used to race one all stripped out with a hot 1093cc motor, They were always used and far from new but do not recall radiator problems or overheating - even though the rad faces the 'wrong' way. The belt-driven fan constantly pulls air through and generally they will cool okay. Never needed a second electric fan and the very presence of that tells you that the owner knows that he has a problem with that engine!
    Here in Johannesburg we frequently have overheating problems with older cars where perhaps the rad is designed and sized for Japanese or European, not African conditions. Our elevation here is 5500 ft above sea level and temps are often high. The rad when newish and all other cooling components are perfect may do the trick but with the thinner air and high temps (sometimes over 30 C) problems can arise especially in traffic of course.

      @@AdamC3046 I think there was only 16 made with a further 9 built recently by jaguar to make up the full original planned production run which originally was not completed because of the factory fire. So unlikely to be an original, but pretty damn rare replica or not ☺️

      They work just fine. This Mini is improperly set up, which is why the owner has tried to solve his ongoing overheating issue with giant wiz-bang aluminum radiator, and (poorly) installed electric fan that ate through that expensive band-aid. The engine needs to have it's correct size water pump pulley put back on it, because that large pulley is slowing down the pumping volume of the water pump, and the air movement of the radiator fan. But having been driven with the hole in the radiator, extremely low coolant, and the gauge pegged in the red zone, the head gasket is now blown, and the cylinder head probably warped, along with the coolant thermostat destroyed.

    • @RobinTheMini
      @RobinTheMini 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The radiator and fan suctions the hot air out with the vacuum effect of the wheel, brilliant engineering idea which works beautifully in healthy and well maintained Mini.
