Just got this game and am trying to figure out the rules before hosting a game night tomorrow. None of us have ever played. This video is great! I sent it to the group! Thank you!
Thank you so much, I'm glad it was useful! I hope the game goes well. One piece of advice, take your time when the haunt starts, to read everything, make sure the traitor has enough time and understands what he/she is doing. Have a great time :)
I know it’s not how it’s intended, but I have found the game becomes much better when having an overseer “gm”, especially when playing with unexpired players. Having a person who are on both sides and can help with questions and make all the “rulings” if there’s something that the guid doesn’t explain or there are some confusion and you’d not want to slow the game down to much. This game can get pretty complex if you don’t know what your doing, an overseer just make it more accessible. Plus you won’t run into the problem with the person knowing the game using it as an advantage for their own gain.
That's a great idea. Particularly when it's the first time for a traitor. The first time I played it, I was the traitor and it was pretty lonely figuring it out :)
At which point do you hand out the cards who determines who is the traitor? What is a "distance" attack and why are you talking about it? How do the monsters show up and who plays them? So if you get a haunt card you can put it to the side for a while?
Hi Maria, whenever a player draws a room tile with an omen shown on it, they must take an omen card and make a haunt roll at the end of their turn, meaning they must roll six dice. If the resulting total is less than the current number of omen cards held by all players, a haunt occurs. You will need to check the haunt chart to see who the traitor is and what haunt scenario will be played. It should say there if Monsters will be part of it or not. I hope this helps! Enjoy the game :)
Note that sometimes you just get unlucky in this game. Once, when I was playing a virtual version using Vassal (although technically, that time I was playing by myself as different characters writing a fanfic using the game as a basis for each chapter), the Haunt started very early because a bunch of Omen cards were found in the first turn or two. It ended up being an interesting experience for me as that round was the first time in the story where the traitor won the game. I've simply been too busy with IRL stuff and distracted by other things to continue the story, but I may want to return to it, especially since I've gotten Tabletop Simulator in order to play the Widow's Walk expansion as well.
You are so right. I've had some games that I felt there was so much bad luck :) You should definitely continue, very cool idea. I haven't played Widow's walk, curious about it.
Thanks for this video! My partner bought the game but I’m the rules master lol! Your video helped me a lot understanding the mechanics of the game! Very well made!
Some of the scenarios are horribly unbalanced in either the heroes or traitor's favor. I played with a party of three, and once the haunt started, we automatically knew it was game over for one of us.
This has quickly become my favorite game, but I did have some negative thoughts and I was wondering if anyone else felt the same: 1. In order for the game to be fair and balanced everyone has to know all the rules. And if it's too confusing the haunt becomes less fun because the traitor will likely not understand one of their special rules and inevitably they'll have to ask for clarification by showing the other players the traitor's tome. 2. When you become trapped in the basement, it's really hard to get back out. You basically have to have someone else come rescue you with a secret staircase or the mystic elevator. This would be fine but it happens a lot. 2/3 times for me. Anyone agree or have we just overlooked something?
It's very valid what you've said. I remember the first time we played it and the haunt was tricky and it was the first game for all of us, it was hard! But once you play it more often it gets easier. Agree on the basement!!
1) When I use this as a gateway game, no one leaves the room. We all go through the traitor and survivor rules so we all understand the gear change. 2) I warn everyone of this possibility! The basement is definitely more dangerous, but there are some cool rooms down there too.
@@GamesMadeEasy The game went well! The new players found your video helpful, and said they looked at some others. Thank you for helping to get them into the hobby!
rooms already discovered by other , if another survivor wishes to come to that room, does he/she need to pick up the item/event/omen card again ? or just read the instruction below and follow this ? we played our first playthrough yesterday and am thoroughly confused.
I completely understand, the first few times are a bit confusing. You can only pick up the omen/item/event card once, and that is the player who first discovers that room. After that, anyone can enter the room but they don't pick up any cards.
Thank you for asking this! The rules handle this aspect dismally, even in the third edition. We were all confused and played this incorrectly. Im surprised no how to play videos address this. And Im wondering if the response here is accurate. To GamesMadeEasy: We are playing the fantasy version of the game with the catacombs, streets, and rooms. In this version there is a weapons shop. So it would seem logical that any character should be able to enter this room and draw an item card. Thoroughly confused. Without more items being available, this game seems a bit too tilted towards the traitor and/or monsters. Otherwise one of the better videos Ive seen. But still missing a good description of movement; much like the rules. Also surprised that that sleeping orange giant monster slumbered so calmly and didn’t destroy all your characters on the board ;)
Not sure if you've been asked already, (probably) but it would be great if you could go through Mysterium, we purchased the game a year ago and have just been staring at it ever since lol! We've tried to watch a couple of youtube videos on it but WOW it seems incredibly involved, (my family and I have never gone past traditional board games but are very interested in upgrading our game nights). Thank you for your awesome channel!
I’ve heard very good things about Mysterium. I’ll try to get it. Thank you so much for the suggestion. It’s an amazing hobby, there are so many great games.
Is there any information you tell the opposite team once the haunt starts? Such as if its possible to attack the traitor, and if possible, what items can be used? It can be confusing if when you dont know if you can do certain task or not.
Unless the haunt specifies, otherwise, the heroes keep the info in their tome secret and the traitor likewise. From the rules: "the heroes and the traitor do anything the haunt tells them to do in the 'Right Now' section" - I hope this helps.
Hi great video just played it a few days ago but ran into a problem that wasn’t really explained (in vid or rule. What if you cannot add rooms to a floor if you want to explore new rooms in that floor (all room tiles for that floor are discovered)?
Thank you! If you run out of room tiles for one of the floors (ground, basement or upper), you can't discover any more rooms on that floor - you've found them all.
Awesome video! Thank you so much for the incredible info! I have a question; After you reveal a room with a item, omen, or event icon, if you return to that room again later, does the player draw another card?
How does the vault work? You draw the event card....which has asked to do a sanity roll. I gain 1 sanity. Then what? The vault has 2 item symbols and says you can do a knowledge roll of 6+ to open and empty the vault.... what does that mean
Hello, I am very sorry for the late reply but it's been so busy! The Vault is a barrier room. As you discover the room you draw an event card. You can also attempt a 6+ knowledge roll to see if you can open the vault and discover two items inside, represented by drawing two item cards. Thematically you spend all your effort trying to open the lock. If you fail your knowledge roll you do not crack the safe and your movement ends there. If you succeed your knowledge roll, you crack the safe and discover two items. Draw and resolve each item. What each items does completely depends on what you draw. If the room had already been discovered and you fail to crack the safe, you still cannot leave the room this turn as the Vault is a barrier room and if you fail an attempt to cross any barrier room (in this case to get inside the Vault) your movement ends. Also, you do not 'enter' the vault as a distinct location. On your next turn you can leave the room as normal. Once the vault has been cracked, the vault is ignored in normal play, you can enter the room if you wish, but no actions take place there. If a haunt lets you lock someone in the vault, there will be specific rules for this in the haunt scenario. I hope this help :)
The booklet explains how monsters work but how do monsters come in to the game? We cant figure out where the monsters come from as they never came into our first game. After we looked at the Rules and all the event omen and item cards and none of those talked about monsters . How do Monsters appear in the game ?
My apologies for the late reply, it was a busy week. Most item cards can be used on your turn only (page 11 in the rule book talks about items). However, if you have the Armor, it specifically says 'any time (not just in your turn)'. The Bell and Amulet of the ages increase your traits, so they passively help if you are attacked in those traits. Omen cards would work in a similar way too. I hope this helps, enjoy the game!
well presented really! , we've been playing it frequently but we came to a bit of a disagreement about a part of the ruling which I hope we can get some clarification on; If a player reveals the haunt during his turn - whether they become a traitor or not- does that player's turn get immediately skipped upon the haunt reveal? meaning that they can't use items or actions normally before passing the turn? because upon reading the "Play the haunt section" it said that the haunt starts from the player next to the traitor, but it doesn't clearly mention whether the current turn has to be immediately fort fitted as the haunt got revealed or not.
Hello! Thank you! Sorry for the delay in replying. The way I have played it is when the haunt is triggered, the haunt revealer looks at the haunt chart. That person does not complete their turn. But it’s an interesting point because the rule book does not specify - at least I couldn’t find it. I hope this helps :)
@@GamesMadeEasy No worries and thanks for your reply! we kinda used to treat the case as such until we once decided that since the rulebook doesn't specify that scenario we allow the explorer to finish their turn normally regardless of whether they were the traitor or not, it allowed for some interesting interactions honestly, would definitely give extra advantage to the more experienced players, and I would recommend you give it a try at some point and let me know what you think :)
If the haunt is triggered then you look at the chart at the beginning of one of the tomes. You refer to the room the haunt revealer was in and the omen that has just been revealed. The corresponding number is the haunt you will play and it will say who the traitor is. (I talk about it around minute 7.45). The haunt revealer is not necessarily the traitor. Hope this helps.
@@GamesMadeEasy Thank you so much!!! Just played for the first time tonight... your video made a HUGE difference, thank you!!! The only question left for us was "What constitutes outward facing windows" .... other than that we understood everything thanks to you!
Thanks for the helpful video! I have a question, with regards to movement, if you don't encounter a card to draw is there a maximum number of rooms you can move between? Sorry I'm a bit confused about how speed plays into it
Hi Lizzie, You're welcome, I'm glad it was useful. If you want to discover a new room, you keep drawing cards until you find one that is on the floor you are in and play it. If you don't want to discover a new room and just want to move rooms, then your movement will be the number you have in your character's speed. Every room counts as 1 movement. When you enter a room you've just discovered and you draw a card, that will end your movement that turn regardless of how many movement points you have left.
That is not how stealing works. You do not trade 2 points of damage to steal, you trade your entire attack to steal. If you were to deal 4 damage, for example, the way you described it would be that you deal 2 and trade 2 to steal. The rules, however, state that you can EITHER do damage OR steal an item if you were to deal at least 2 points of damage.
Your movement is determined by your speed. But also, when you enter a room and you discover something (item, omen, etc) your movement ends for that turn.
Can only the player who discovered the room first where there’s a symbol take a card? Or does any player that ends their turn there take a card? Thank you for explaining! We’re still learning the game.
You're very welcome. It's a great game. Only the player who discovers the room first draws a card. Once the room is discovered you don't draw a card if any player enters the room.
There’s a TH-cam channel called “medicine man” there’s a video where the mercs from tf2 plays it. Medic explains the rules clearly, it’s also funny so I recommend you check it out lol
I was going to watch your video but I'm not watching a video with over 15 ads. Stopped 1 min in when I saw all the ad breaks showing in the video play line.
There should only be 1 or 2 max in the video - no more than that. In the play line, there are break lines, but these are to explain different aspects of the game, in case people want to jump directly to something specific. Enjoy the game, it's a lot of fun.
Not every haunt has a monster. It depends on the haunt. When you get a haunt with a monster read what that monster does specifically. I outlined broadly what they do but the specific haunt will tell you which monster/s are playing in that haunt.
a great explanation! I like to play as madame zostra for her balanced stats, but I almost never get traitor. narrator kinda looks like she would be the player to betray the party though and become the "monster" >_> better watch out
The rules state that "You can perform actions (such as using an item or attacking) in the middle of your movement. However, whenever a game effect makes you draw a card, for any reason, you must stop moving for the rest of your turn.” This could be interpreted as you couldn't attack or use items or make a roll once you got in that new room and drew a card. Because it wouldn't be in the middle of your movement. However as it has been stated in many forums, the rules state the relevant part themselves: "you must stop moving for the rest of your turn". There wouldn't be a "rest of your turn" if that was supposed to end it! The fact that you can take actions in the middle of the movement is not meant to mean that it’s the only time you can take actions. You can also do that before or after your movement. As stated in the rules: ON YOUR TURN . . . … you can do as many of the following actions as you want, in any order. So if you want, you can roll for an event after you’ve placed it (like the vault or the closet). Hope this helps!
Hi! Have a look at the rule here: “When a player makes a haunt roll and starts the haunt, that player (the haunt revealer) looks at the haunt chart on the first two pages of the traitor’s tome booklet. The chart shows which haunt has been revealed - and who is the traitor.” I hope this helps :)
Thank you for your comment Yozora. I agree with you there are a lot of videos out there that briefly explain how to play this game and do it very well. What I try to do in my channel is cover as much of the rules as possible to not have to go back to the rulebook all the time. In Betrayal, there are a lot of rules, that’s why I ended with a 14-minute video.

When you enter a room you've just discovered and you draw a card, that will end your movement that turn regardless of how many movement points you have left.
Interesting
Wonderful cat :)
Thank you ☺️ he truly is. He loves it when I record.
Thank you Matthew for flagging it, I really appreciate it. I've made changes and will pin a comment. Thanks again.
So can you move Infinatly? Because you can move, take an action and move again
Your movement is determined by your speed. But also, when you enter a room and you discover something (item, omen, etc) your movement ends for that turn.
Can it be played by just 2 players?
I believe it's from 3 players. I have usually played it with 4 to 6 players.
Great tips! Thanks for the video. Regarding your last line, BaHotH is *not* a roleplaying game.
Thank you!! I know, it's a bit of a stretch :)
Can you do Kemet?
Thank you for the suggestion. I will try to get it to do it.
5:25 did she just... turn British?
Great video nonetheless!
This game still confusing as hell lol
I agree. I find the specific haunt rules to be the most confusing but once you start playing it's not that bad. Enjoy!
@@GamesMadeEasy thanks for explaining.
i dont understand the monsters at all, could you explain them
Not every haunt has a monster. It depends on the haunt. When you get a haunt with a monster read what that monster does specifically. I outlined broadly what they do but the specific haunt will tell you which monster/s are playing in that haunt.
@@GamesMadeEasy thank you
thank you for teaching us, you're very beautiful btw :)
You’re very welcome, it’s a fun game! And thank you for the compliment :)
Poor cat can’t sleep
He loves the box actually :)
a great explanation! I like to play as madame zostra for her balanced stats, but I almost never get traitor.
narrator kinda looks like she would be the player to betray the party though and become the "monster" >_> better watch out
I got the traitor the first time I played the game! Not very often since then :)
Draw a card ends your turn, not just your movement.
The rules state that "You can perform actions (such as using an item or attacking) in the middle of your movement. However, whenever a game effect makes you draw a card, for any reason, you must stop moving for the rest of your turn.”
This could be interpreted as you couldn't attack or use items or make a roll once you got in that new room and drew a card.
If a traitor attacks a hero and the traitor dies... can the traitor die? And if so, do the hero’s automatically win the game?
It would depend on the haunt you are playing and what it says regarding what the traitor and heroes can do.
thanks pretty lady
You are welcome :)
Who is the traitor? The haunt revealer?
Good explanation, but this game is a pain in the *ss.
Thank you! It's not easy, in particular the haunt. But it's so much fun.
It sounds to me like this lady rolls through 4 different accents....?
Only an hour huh? 😄
Can take longer sometimes :)
Bee Movie wasn't from the 50s!
You are right, the Bee movie was released in 2007; however, The Golden Age of B movies was in the '50s
The cat is very distracting!
I could not understand the game.
Try again, it's a really nice game, well worth the effort.
“ Learn to play faster “ yet the video is 14 min long and there’s videos that are 5 min that give better explanations in short time …… hmm 🤔
Are you married? 😻
