Robert (or FPGAZumSpass) is done with active development of the MiSTer FPGA N64 core, giving us 99% of a fully functioning Nintendo 64 on MiSTer FPGA. and the newest test core fixes the ram issues with the MiSter Pi / Taki Udon MiSTer FPGA clone, improves the sound quality of the N64 FPGA core...and more! The best emulator console that isnt emulating!
But guess what? As of 7/20/2024 development has started up again with a new MiSTer FPGA core....an updated N64 core fixing Star Wars: Battle for Naboo and Conker's Bad Fur Day without any game patching required...and you've gotta love that! and now we also have Polaris Snocross working! Plus Gauntlet Legengs fixes too! and now Batman Beyond and fixes to The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask! The WIP build is on MiSTer FPGA Discord Test Build Channel FYI (N64_telescope.rbf) or under the N64 channel pins!

I love the n64 core. Just played Paper Mario for the first time from start to finish. Flawless experience with an N64 snac adapter

In a way I’m glad Jet Force Gemini was one of the last games to work. I feel like it brought attention to an under appreciated gem. Rare at their best!

Could you do an FPGA vs ParaLLEl RDP vs actual hardware comparison video? The two scenes I'm mostly interested in seeing are the title sequence of Ocarina of Time and the intro cinematic of Donkey Kong 64.
OoT mainly because of nostalgia, and DK64 because it seems like no emulator can properly play the cinematics without the music going significantly out of sync.

@Azuris190 OG N64 has always been a hand cramper for me
My brother has MiSTer and misses the "Gamma Correction" in N64 core, because he plays in CRT and depending on the monitor, needs some correction, also HELPS A LOT with TOO DARK games like: Doom 64, Hexen; other ones: Duke Nukem 64, Castlevania (both), Shadow Man.
It’s just as good to adjust gamma on the display if it’s an option

@@VideoGameEsoterica Depending con CRT, sometimes is cumbersome and you have just brightness/contrast, because not every CRT has gamma setting, other cores have this. I understand that maybe there's no space left on DE10nano. He created an "Issue" of this on github.
Robert is kicking so much ass. His dedication to this core is so incredible. Speaking of which, makes me wonder what happened to Analogues N64 product they were allegedly releasing this year. I would like an 8bitdo N64 controller! 🤣
Analogue isn’t exactly known for timely delivery
I too, want the N64. I believe Mazamars partnered up with Analogue to make it, because he had an N64 FPGA project going on, and then in 2020 it just came to a screeching halt, and he hasn't said another word about it. This makes me think he is under NDA and working on it with Analogue, but that's all just my personal speculation until proven.
I'm okay with The Analogue 64 being delayed until 2025, as Christmas is coming, and I have enough people to buy for. :P
And really unless you absolutely need cart reading this core kind of quasi-obsoleted the concept of an FPGA N64
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah, I feel you there. I didn't really want a MiSTer until I saw how much progress on the N64 core was shaping up. Now I'm shying away from Raspberry Pi boards for emulation, and gravitating towards FPGA for my retro gaming needs. FPGA is the future for retro game preservation.
@@JayrosModShop Exactly how I felt. Then Taki dropped the MiSTer Pi and I was sold. Managed to snag one of the first batch and love it so far! Great, clean output. I would like to experiment on getting the cartridge experience with some sort of custom USB or SD card solution, even if the "carts" are not real ones.
Robert showed amazing performance in MiSTer when somebody said "N64 core impossible" But he has a magic wand and just come true

N64 Resident Evil 2 screen "delay" is flatscreen display -issue only.
Grey to grey response times just are not fast enough.
Unless, you're playing it on CRT or Plasma, where there then is no issues what so ever while using Memory Expansion Pack.
It’s also an issue on capture cards due to resync to source
Do these updates fix some of the sound sync issues in cutscenes of some games like OoT and the Castlevanias? Also the super-fast speed of Banjo Tooie’s attract mode.

Use Mega Drive. Thats the Nuked MD based one
Use MegaDrive unless you want to use Turbo with a certain game, than use the other one. I assume the Megadrive does not have turbo.

@@VideoGameEsoterica The Nuked core did not have Turbo many months ago, but I haven't checked recently. So it still makes the original core useful for Turbo when needed. Someone said they can't add a turbo option for the nuked, not sure if that is true or the reason for why not.
@@VideoGameEsoterica Robert could adopt this core and implement save state. Maybe for the SNES too🤩.

I couldn't get the Dinomod Enhanced version of Dinosaur Planet to boot on the core that's on Update All. Possibly something wrong on my end, or maybe something else. Any ideas?
Try the new core. Update all is a bit old. But since that’s a non-retail game it’s possible it won’t work. I’d have to check

So does this autopatcher patch the actual rom permanently, or is it temporary?
Honestly I haven’t checked if it’s permanent or on the fly just in memory but not in the game itself
It's on the fly patching, the ROM itself remains unchanged. That's why I consider it such an elegant solution, because the users don't have to mess with anything or don't even need to know about the patches in the first place.

@@etgripper yes, definitely, we need blackout and apocalypse certified retro gaming devices, fortunately there is nothing you manually need to patch. If everything goes to shit I will finally have enough time to dig into my huge backlog of "hidden gems".

Imagine if you had a time machine and forced N64 devs to make their games work on the Mister 100%. That's the idea.
@@samuelbanyathe MiSTer is a hardware chameleon. It becomes whatever you need it to be. In this case it becomes an slightly out of spec N64. Some of the smallest operations that a mister N64 can do take slightly different amount of time from a real N64. Most of the time this is fine. Recompilation will do nothing here as it's already targeting the correct architecture. We are just at the limits the FGPA fabric can do.

Hey, can you shed some light on this… is the n64 core doing the live-patching or is it mister main? I understand you need the up to date Main, which suggests the latter, but is that just a framework for the core to do the patching? Just curious.
Both work in conjunction basically. You need the new N64 database text with the patch data in it and that works with main to on the fly patch the files
