MAHLER Symphony No. 1 "Titan" - 2nd movement

- Mahler was just 28 when he finished gigantic First Symphony, one of the greatest Firsts ever written. It was begun in 1884 and completed four years later. Mahler subtitled the work "Titan", after a novel by Jean Paul. The first performance took place in Budapest on 20 November 1889 with the composer conducting. Among the innovations one can point to in this symphony are the largest assemblage of orchestral musicians hitherto required in a symphony, and the incorporation of café, pop and gypsy music.
The robust scherzo second movement is notable for its heavy rhythmic impulses derived from the Ländler, a rural Austrian dance. Special effects here include the use of the woodwind section en masse (often up to twelve players) in featured roles, breathtaking fanfares from the horns and trumpets. A charming Trio, introduced by a poetic horn call, provides gentle contrast. (Robert Markow)

Elsewhere in the universe, the second movement from Mahler's Symphony No. 1 was played on ship-wide comms when Devore inspector Kashyk came aboard USS Voyager in 2375, from the series Star Trek: Voyager (S5E10, "Counterpoint")

To hell with protocoll, Prax! Do you think either of us will benefit from having this failure in our records? As far als you are concerned this incident never occured. Make sure teams share that understanding!
My offer to take you with us was genuine.
Obviously, a lot of Star Trek fans typed this one into the search box.
Five people don't like the Devore Imperium.
You read my mind
@@tacticalderpy2077 he's a telepath! He doesn't like them either.

Zum Teufel mit dem Protokoll, PRAX!!
🖖
This guy and his orchestra seem to really know what they're doing here! Bravo!
You know the musicians and conductor are on board with Mahler when they heed his "Bells Up!" instruction. I feel like Mahler would have liked the tempi chosen for this performance also. Feels a little fast, but it works well.
World class. The recording is top class too.
@JudgeMagisterPhoenix Yes! Yes I did! Voyager ftw.
Maybe this will help you relax. 😜
Just Brilliant
🖖
this a movement from star trek voyager
haha, what a crazy tempo. but that just seems to be so characteristic of maestro shui. that exuberance, energy and unbelievable youthfulness. maestro shui is quite a character eh.
What's this Star Trek Voyager everyone's talking about??? I've always loved Mahler. He wrote Swan Lake right? 😅

Star Trek: Voyager, set in the 24th century, follows a ship stranded far from Earth. In their long journey home, they encounter a species that conducts regular inspections on the ship to ensure there are no telepathic aliens onboard. These aliens are particularly fascinated by Mahler's music, especially the counterpoint elements, and often play it from the ship's database during their searches.
The episode's name is: "Counterpoint"
You don't need to be a star trek fan to watch this one off episode to enjoy it.

Wow. No one clapped.
It's customary to wait until the symphony's end to applaud.
I hail from Star Trek Voyager!

No, I wasn't brought here by Madame Captain Janeway, but Jack Barrymore's François Villon ;-)
What it sounds like to hide in a transporter buffer
😍
I'm outraged because no bts song uses the IV-vii°-iii-vi-ii-V-I progression.
@LittleFrenchy72 cos it's only the 2nd movement out of 4
MAestro Lan Shui Takes hard on this music!haha U cn compare!Other conductors have a smooth conducting when conducting this piece but Lan Shui is more EPIC!AND VIVID!

hi to all ravens

For the most part, I find this performance to be somewhat dull but at the very end it suddenly comes to life. The tempos are just a tad too fast for my taste. The playing is very good, however. The conductor needs to allow a little more flexibility in his phrasing to become a first rate Mahler interpreter.
... no claps at the end...
Yes I admire that discipline, too many people clap in between movements these days...
@@milesmelz4045 i was 18 when i wrote that... time flys.
@@pierrezani6687 I'm glad I was able to lure you back to this timeless masterpiece
Maybe he had to pee
or Europeans.
too fast !! pure madness or try to prove something ?
It hadn't end yet. Only noobs clap between movements.
