This was a song of rebellion against a system set to preserve the older generations. It is now considered one of the great GenX protest songs and much more highly regarded now than when it came out. When this was released the oldest of us had just turned 30 and the youngest were just about to be 20. We were constantly called slackers and dreamers and told we would never amount to anything. That’s what Gregg is singing about with the Dreamers Disease.
The lead singer, Gregg Alexander, also wrote “Murder on the Dancefloor” by Sophie Ellis-Bextor! Super talented. There’s a TH-cam vid of New Radicals performing it.

This came out in 1998, I think the computers crashing reference speaks to the Y2K scare leading into the year 2000. Everyone thought that computers wouldn't be able to handle the change from 1999 to 2000 and that the world was going to collapse.
This is a playlist song for me. Was just listening to it a couple days ago, thinking you would enjoy it. And here you are giving it a listen! Glad you enjoyed it
I heard this brand new in the music store in 1998 and thought it was Todd Rundgren. His vocal range is very similar. Gregg Alexander, the lead singer, later wrote and co-wrote many hit songs, including Santana's "Game of Love".
New Radicals have a song "Mother, We Just Can't Get Enough" that sounds like it could have been a Rolling Stones song... th-cam.com/video/A2MSg3L0Zyg/w-d-xo.html
Love this 1 hit wonder for the message too! Gregg Alexander is now 54(omg!) and he left the New Radicals after only one album to shift to song-writing and production. He contributed to songs that were commercial successes in the early 2000's and won a Grammy for his his work for "The Game of Love" by Santana in 2003 as well as nomination for Academy Award for the song Lost Stars. thx for sharing Black Pegasus :)
This song was truly ahead of it's time and so many missed the deeper meaning. It didn't get much love upon it's release (meaning it was just a hit song) but as things have slowly unraveled since it's release, it's one of the songs you realize were so much deeper and way more insightful than you thought.
I remember hearing this when I was in high school. The message that I get from the song is you get treated the way you treat others. The kids releasing the dogs and putting the adults into the cages is to show them how it feels to be in one. The rich girl serving gets a taste of what it's like to be on the other end of the counter.
That's an interesting take. If the people are getting caged and then hassled at the counter to experience it themselves, then that would mean that the kids, at least in this video, likewise want to experience being the "system" and hassling those under them. It's sort of like saying that you don't agree with "X" and so your solution is to do "X" to someone else. Yes, they get to experience "getting" what they "gave" but you get to experience being the "giver". It works both ways and ties in with what BP is seeing in the video.
BP, what's funny is you're talking about these kids..... And Greg Alexander (lead) was born in 1970. We all stay young on video and some messages are worth repeating. Hope the family is doing well.
Someday We'll Know is one of my favorite songs. Alexander's gift for catchy lyrics tickles the same fancy Bowling for Soup does for me (very different substance, obviously)
Correction on the interpretation. It's not about getting the rich people, its about the rebellion of youth against the system. It's saying resist the pigeonholing of society into it's version of success. But the song resonates in my head and plays back my youth so strong.
The New Radicals were only around a bout a year or so. The group disbanded due to the lead guy being tired of all the fame, paparazzi and interviews. Basically he couldn't handle what it was doing to him so he called it quits. But great song.
I live in a country where we have a few rich people and fewer really rich people. One of those rich people, bless him, built a hospital for children and gifted it back to our state run health system. Not all wealth are bad, in fact many are very generous, but but some are evil. Love the song and the review.

You’re on to something. This chaos looks like so much fun. Love the release of the dogs, the dancing and the rebellion going on. Only problem when you get old is you have to look at the consequences of your actions. Still a great song 🔥
This came out in late 1998 when I was in college--and while there's clearly a pop-music-obscured message of anarchy/rebellion, I can't help but still hear the hopefulness of youth. When you're a teenager with your life ahead of you, you can't help but be hopeful, or at least playful, in the face of the "corporate cage" or whatever machine you're raging against. I don't know, maybe all that youthful exuberance died in the 90's and early 00's. Teenagers now seem a lot more hopeless and frustrated. Guess this just goes in cycles. Point is, reader: You've got the music in you. Don't give up.
Love his voice. ❤This was from 98. I think it was saying dreamers gotta dream. Don't let anyone get in the way of your dream....there will be bumps in the road and people that aren't dreamers tey to put you on a mainstream path. But don't forget your dream.

Lastly--- They had two other fairly popular songs (thanks to A Walk to Remember) "Just Can't Get Enough" and "Someday We'll Know."
